We visited on a Friday night as a table of six. When our butter chicken arrived, the chicken was hard, chewy, and tough. We brought this to the staff's attention, but were told there was nothing they could do and that everyone else in the restaurant was eating the same dish. We were not asking for the bill to be comped; however, a bit of understanding and an effort to resolve the issue would have been appreciated. We are frequent customers, both dining in and ordering through DoorDash, and the butter chicken has never tasted like this before. That alone shows this was an isolated issue this time. The service was bad as well , they came to our table to bring our food and after that we asked for containers and the check and they didn't come til a hour later, over all a bad experience We hope this feedback is taken constructively, as we genuinely enjoy this restaurant and would like to continue supporting it. read more

I just left another Indian eatery 8 minutes from Bayleaf (see my reviews) and was ready for better treatment and chow. This place is far larger and the food far better. But I had a bit of a fit when they brought food packaging and told me to wrap my food myself. So I took a bit of a stand bc and the kindly maitre de - they were all kind even when the food took 40 minutes to reach my table - shared the disturbing tale of what prompted the policy. Some miscreant photographed a waiter wrapping leftovers for a client and notified local health officials. Turned out - obviously - not to be a big deal but can you imagine? So I told them next time I come - and I will - I'll be happy to suffer the tiny inconvenience to abide by their rules. Thank goodness I found a new place! read more

I find the food way too spicy, even though I always ask for mild. I don't think they should offer three options of how spicy when no mater what it's so spicy, my family and I cannot eat it or I have add tons of cream and extra ingredients to "fix" it. It is inconsistent too. Sometimes they do actually make it mild, but not most of the time. If you enjoy very spicy Indian food, you will like this, but if you're hoping they can adjust it for you, I would not recommend. read more

This weekend, a friend of ours took us out to dinner and treated us to an amazing meal at BayLeaf. This was my first time dining in at the restaurant on SO Avenue in South Orange. We had a lovely time with delicious Indian food, chill atmosphere, and friendly service. BayLeaf is our go-to takeout spot for Indian. It was so nice being able to experience what it's like to dine in. There are a variety of diners who were there - from groups of 4-5, couples, and lone diners as well. The space feels very intimate but you have privacy to carry on conversation with your companions. Lovely local Indian food place in South Orange! We stopped by on a Sunday night and got seated right away. The waitstaff were prompt and nice. We ordered the chicken samosas, chicken curry, butter chicken, and garlic naan! Everything was scrumptious, came out hot and the flavors and spices were great! Been coming to Bayleaf for a few years now and it has always been solid. I think they have even gotten better over time. One time my boyfriend and I came for Valentine's Day and they had a great menu including a bottle of champagne! I think theirs curries are where they really shine. They also have some Indo Chinese food on the menu but it wasn't as good as the curries. I have had the chickpea and lentil curries which are pretty good, but the chicken curries are delicious. The chicken is so tender! My favorite is the kolhapuri as it has a good kick to it without being extremely spicy. The rice is nice and fluffy and when you dine in they will offer you extra. Don't miss out on the garlic naan either. It's the best! Also the restaurant is BYOB so you can always stop at the liquor store nearby before and pick up a bottle for dinner. read more

I always eat here ! I usually have chicken tikka masala, which is a classic, and of course it's good. Everything I've tried here has been great. The samosas, the naan, the curry, the basmati rice. There's a meal that comes with chicken, lamb, and others but I'm not sure what it's called. Everything here is great. The service is upstanding and the ambiance is generally very quiet and calm. We were here earlier this week since it was close to my sons university. It was a mixed experience. I must say that the food would be great for a non-Indian person. For an Indian, it would be mediocre. Appetizers were great though. We got the garlic shrimp and chicken samosas. Kids loved it and so did we. Service was very good. The staff was very attentive. We had ordered papad which was a tad underdone. They were gracious enough to take it off our bill. For the meal we ordered chicken saag, goat kolhapuri and baingan bhartha. We think it was average. For dessert we tried the gajar halwa with moong dal out of curiosity. But no one really took to it at the table. After coming here numerous times since my initial review I've decided to promote BayLeaf to 5 stars. All of my visits in-person would steadily improve and I believe there was a management change as well as with some of the employees and perhaps cooks because things improved more and more. It's one of my favorite BYOB places in town, with a good menu and some of the best appetizers when it comes to Indian cuisine. For how good it is, it isn't quite as expensive as some other Indian restaurants I enjoy, making this convenient as well as a little cheaper. Along with this, with the pandemic happening, I found myself ordering for pick up here more than a couple times. The ordering and pick up were always smooth and the food was just as good as visiting in person. Only downside was the lack of ongoing rice, which instead comes in a small plastic container. Even tried delivery a couple times and it went well. Still though Between in person visits and service that has fared well with pick up and an overall improvement over it's early days, Kudos Bayleaf. read more

This place was fabulous went for lunch on a Sunday table for 3. Had Clinton Chili Lamb was so flavorful and good, chicken Tula masala was one of the best I have had! The Riata was perfectly thick and tasty! The Naan selection was incredible we got a Chili Garlic Naan and some sort of Cherry Naan it was sweet! The restaurant is cozy and well appointed, the service was first class!! I will be going again!!! read more

Ordered the mix grill for take out ($22 as of 01/2022) which is my usual when I go to Indian restaurants so have a lot of experiences for comparison. For one, the dish was not at all spicy despite specifically asking them to make it "Indian spicy" since I enjoy a kick. In addition, the lamb chops were very tiny (picture included). Lastly, the dish included a lot less meat that mixed grills ot other restaurants (I am usually able to get at least 2 meals out of the dish them but finished all of this in one sitting). The food tasted good but for the above reasons, I do not consider it a good value and will not be a repeat customer. read more

I went to this spot for lunch and I ordered my lunch via the internet. I ordered the vegetable kolhapuri and it cost $13.93. When I arrived I parked on the street nearby. When I checked in it said I could get 10% off but one of the men that worked there said they didn't honor it and walked away which was rude. Another man came from the back and asked me if I was ordering and I said I was picking up and I told him my name. He said give it 10 more minutes. He was really nice ablut it. After a while he bought the food out and I left. When I got home I ate and it was just ok. I had to add some seasoning to it to taste but it was filling. All the food here was excellent! We started with chicken samosas which were so crispy on the outside. The filling was seasoned so well. The curry and the butter chicken was very flavorful, and the meat was so tender! The garlic naan was so good. We had the gulag jamun for dessert and words can't describe how delicious they are! Came here for dinner and was deeply disappointed. I'd like to say- our server who was a Caucasian male with glasses was extremely friendly and because of him, I'm giving this place an extra star. Other than that, my experience here was definitely not what I expected. The place looked very nice and clean, which is great. However, it wasn't even busy and we didn't even receive all of our food. I ordered a mango lassi- yummy! We also ordered a lightly salted lassi- DISGUSTING. They put SO much salt in it and it was very difficult to drink. That being said, we asked if we can exchange this and the female server was not happy about it. I really wish she tried it because she'll then understand why we didn't want it. However, we ended up getting a regular lassi so that was good. I then got my butter chicken- which was delicious! It comes with rice and I also ordered a garlic naan with it. My friend ordered the same thing with regular naan. When the food came out, the female server told us that the naans will come out last to keep it warm.. anddd it never came. By the time we were done with our butter chicken and rice, it was STILL not here. How disappointing because I usually dip my garlic naan into my butter chicken. We told them that if the naans were not in the process of being made, then we would just like to cancel the order. But if the chefs were already working on it, then we'll still take it. Yum! Came here for lunch about two weeks ago. I'm really terrible at posting reviews right away and since I didn't pay the bill, i don't remember everything that we ate. I do remember we ordered Samosas, goat stew of some sort and tandoori shrimp, as well as the Naan bread and some chutney. Everything tasted good! The waiter was friendly and attentive. Great Indian cuisine and excellent service/staff. BayLeaf and Marty's pizza are the two bright spots in the Maplewood/South Orange dining scene. The rest of the area is kind of a joke (I guess Ariyoshi Japanese restaurant is pretty good, too). If BayLeaf's naan and roti were human I would be romantically attracted to them. I really wanted to give this restaurant a better review but I couldn't. I generally give local businesses great reviews, but Bayleaf has under-delivered on expectations each time. Tonight was my third visit: I had dine-in dinner with a date the first time, dine-in buffet lunch with my parents the second time, and take-out dinner tonight. The previous visits were not good (food-wise), so I didn't provide a write-up. However, since I have now frequented this restaurant several times, it's probably appropriate to share the good and bad. The good: convenient location (on South Orange Avenue), provides a different offering since there are not many Indian restaurants in the neighborhood. Naan breads are delicious. The not-so-good: terrible app and average food. When you go to Bayleaf's website, they refer you to the MealHi5 app to order food to-go. I was able to place an order on the app, but it does not give any ETA for completion. So you are still forced to call or visit the restaurant for status, which totally defeats the point of an app. The dishes included decent portions of chicken, however (as my parents also recalled from their visit) the flavors seemed to be the same for different curries and thus, forgettable. I ended up waiting 45 min for 2 curries, rice and an order of naan. While not a terrible turnaround for takeout, I felt it was not as efficient or tasty as it could be. read more

We have been to Bayleaf twice in the past 6 weeks and both times have felt it was worth 5 stars, and maybe 6! The food was terrific and the service attentive and not intrusive. The appetizers we had include the vegetarian samosas and the lasuni gobi, which is cauliflower fried crisply in a spicy and very flavorful sauce. The waiter had recommended it and I thought I might not like it, but it was crispy and quite delicious-I was pleasantly surprised. We have had four main courses during the two visits. My wife felt her lamb dum biryani was excellent as was her tandoori lamb kebab. This seemed to be listed as an appetizer, but was actually quite a large portion, more than sufficient for a main course. I had chicken tikka masala which was very flavorful in its creamy-like sauce. I had the lamb korma, also a mix of delightful flavors. A large portion of rice was served as well. All four of the main courses were served in large portions that were more than adequate. They were very polite in supplying containers to take home the extras. Needless to say, we had no room for dessert, so I can't evaluate them. We had plain naan and garlic naan and both were fine. As I said above, the service was professional and attentive. We liked that a pitcher of water is placed on the table, which eliminates the need for constant refilling by staff. As you can tell, we were very enthusiastic about our visits and recommend Bayleaf highly. They have a good number of vegetarian dishes as well. My only disappointment is that they have not reinstituted their lunch buffet; maybe we will be lucky in the future. read more
