DO NOT TAKE PICS @ Sonny's RotiShop
    Freeyah-Knycky C.

DO NOT TAKE PICTURES IN THIS SHOP! As I'm sure a lot of (Caribbean) people do, even if you can make dhalpuri roti (that's the one with split/chic peas in the dough), we order it saving a ton load of time and mess. My family found Sonny's to do a really nice roti skin so we ordered and was given a pick up time of 6:30 Saturday morning. On arriving at the shop I was pleased to see they promoted home (T&T) by way of menu and decor. I gave the lady at the counter the pick up name and proceeded to snapping pictures for yelp purposes. Click, check photo, click, changed angle, click click click. Out of nowhere I heard "YOU CAN'T TAKE PICTURES HERE!" You know caps signifies shouting right? I turned to the voice, "excuse me?" "Ah say yuh cah take pictures here" "Why is that?" I asked, I thought maybe it was for religious reasons and I will always respect that whether I understand it or not. "No reason de boss man just doh want anybody taking pictures in he shop" Well blow me down with an air kiss. I retorted: "well tell your boss man to sue me or take them off my phone". I will admit (with some degree of shame), I myself was a tad rude. The order just seemed so unnecessary. What was more upsetting was up to this point I had taken pictures of the restaurant and menu board with foods that as a Trini I'm constantly asked about so my pictures were to promote this shop/restaurant in a positive light. I don't know if "boss man" was hurt in the past by someone taking pictures in his establishment with a negative outcome, but I'm a strong advocate of it isn't what you do/say but how you do/say it. The aggression was uncalled for. It left a bad taste in my mouth. (Which isn't good for a place that sells food). As I waited for my roti skins (the order was late), I vowed never to come here again and when I finally left their shop, we drove a few blocks down, 'round a corner and stopped at Singh's Roti Shop where we made further purchases of doubles (yummmmy) and other Indian/Trini sweets like jalebi, current rolls etc. I took pictures AND videos at Singh's to my heart's content and wondered why we didn't order our skins from them in the first place. You live, get chastised THEN you learn. One star because I will not lie, the skins tasted okay......alright good. The End.

When I came in here Wednesday around 1 pm I wasn't sure what I was buying because I was picking up stuff for an out-of-town friend. I had noticed outside they had a sign in the glass advertising chicken doubles. I wasn't sure if my Muslim friend stuck to Halal meat so I texted her but I got no response. When I went in, I asked if they could do the regular doubles. They could. I ordered 2. I also got 2 bottles of ginger beer. My friend had asked if Mauby was available but I couldn't find it there. When I met with my friend she ate the doubles. She enjoyed them.

Well, say you are on the way to the airport. Preferably JFK terminals. This is a great lunch spot or brunch if you wake early to head to. It's right near the A train stop and they have great prices. I had the Chicken Roti which is $6, but it might be more to have it boneless...not sure perhaps a dollar more? I got two other sodas and my total came out $9 and change. The roti itself is served separately, so that way your chicken meat and juices do not sog up the bread. The roti is light and crisp with crushed yellow lentils inside the bread. The chicken roti comes in a curry sauce which is flavorful. I do know they have variety for the interior of your roti: conch, duck, beef, oxtail, shrimp, goat and of course chicken. They also have doubles for $1.25 and $2 if you want chicken with your doubles or is it inside the doubles? Not sure. I have only been here twice, but if only it were closer, I would visit it every week. When inquiring for the doubles, they will ask you what sauces you want. Tamarind, spicy, and something else which I forgot. My apologies. Did I mention that they have pumpkin? currant cake? aloo? and other yummies for your tummies? With about 8 tables and plenty of seating, I find that I never had to fight anyone for a seat or hunt and peck for one. I sure like this place. =) And best of all, they do have a sink located on the same floor (sinks come in handy since people usually eat roti with their hands) and I should mention that there is a bathroom located downstairs. There is a sign that mentions not to run down these flight of stairs.

Accessibility and parking- 1star. It's in a crowded neighborhood on a busy street. Parking was horrendous. Luckily I found parking and that's the only reason it got that star. I ordered a chicken roti, shark and fishcakes. Will rate each. Roti skin- 5stars nice and warm and fresh roti skin. Not reheated like some West Indian restaurants. Curry chicken- 3stars was just ok. Seasoning was just ok as wasn't that tender. Fried Shark- 3stars $2.50 for a piece of a shark steak cut? Wth? With that price I was expecting it to taste better. It was just ok and that's why it lost stars. Fishcake- 2stars. $2 for one. Biting into it it looks nice and flaky. However, it was mostly after. The flavor was just ok. Again too much money for what I got. Overall rating: 2.8 stars. I will try again and next the order the boneless chicken doubles

I had doubles from here and I expected more. I hadn't had one in a while and that may be the reason for the big expectation. It was missing something. It tasted okay but I feel like it was lacking something important. I also wish they gave you tamarind sauce with it but they didn't. Overall, it was satisfying but, I would try another place next time.

I've been meaning to see how this place compares to the many other Roti shops in the area. I finally got around to it and I'd say they are a 3.5 to out of 5. I still prefer Trinciti in terms of flavor but they are always so packed and the wait is usually long. This place didn't have a wait at all but in their defense we did arrive pre-lunch hour. The good thing is they were all set up and ready to go beforehand. We sampled the boneless chicken roti (which is actually $1 cheaper than nearby locations, many places upcharge since the meat is boneless). Decent portion size but the curry is slightly sweeter. The shrimp roti was just okay. The flavor was good but the shrimp were severely overcooked and tiny at that. The deep fried shark was okay but it has a bone in it (cartilage) so there isn't much actual meat to it. It does taste like chicken so I'd rather just have a meatier piece of actual chicken lol The one thing that did impress me is the doubles here are actually huge and super low priced, even with the addition of chicken. If I come back it would be just for the doubles. Parking will be tricky if you arrive at a busy hour. Read the signs and be sure to read the meter as parking regulations are strictly enforced in the area. Your best bet will be down a residential side street away from businesses.

We had Shark, Doubles, Chicken Doubles and fish cakes. It was okay not as good as the others in the area. It didn't make my tongue dance like Island Roti or Trinciti Roti. It is a good value though and service was quick and friendly.

    Curry Shrimp

Worst roti I ever had in my life! I ordered the curry shrimp and channa (chick peas). The shrimp tasted like it's been cooking all day which resulted in a mushy dog-food like consistency. The Channa was spread like peanut butter on the roti. Horrible! Horrible! Horrible! I'd give it zero stars if I could. So mad I wasted my money!!!

The shop is steady busy with takeout orders and the occasional folks (like me) who wanted to sit and enjoy my first doubles there. They only have two tables and chairs. Most people order to go. You may order at the kiosk and wait for your number to be called when it is ready to pick up. The kiosk is good because it easily shows all the sauces you may add to your doubles and the variety of other things like drinks, etc you may order. There is also the option to get in line and place your oder. You can watch the assembly line of workers quickly making food. Then check out with the cashier. They sell lots of different cakes, breads, nuts, and drinks too. I was a little overwhelmed on what to order, but a nice employee helped me out. I showed him what I was trying to order and asked for suggestions. Thanks to him I had the best doubles! Added tamarind sauce, mango chutney, and the benny sauce. The perfect vegetarian meal for $2.50! It is made of roti (flatbread), curried chickpeas, and topped with the sauces. Then rolled up to make a sandwich. So flavorful! I wasn't too sure which drink to get as I wasn't sure what they all tasted like. Chose the Seamoss drink, which is a mix of milk, seams, nutmeg, and some spices. Milky and not overly sweet. This was good. Maybe next time I'll get sorrel, which is hibiscus. They said the peanut drink is good too. Ordered Pholourie with tamarind sauce. These are fried savory dough balls. I couldn't resist getting a sweet treat. So, I randomly picked the salara bread, which looks like a cinnamon swirl bread slice. It is actually stuffed with shredded coconut that is colored red and tastes like cherry. Pretty good and not overly sweet. Definitely add this place to your list of eats in Queens. It is a trek from the city, but so good! Also, nice that it is a little bit away from the loud busy part of Liberty Ave in Richmond Hill. This is about a 15-20 min walk from there on Lefferts Blvd. Restroom available.

Every bite was full of flavor, and the meat practically fell off the bone. The doubles were just as impressive. The bara was soft and fresh, the channa was perfectly seasoned, and the tamarind and pepper sauces brought everything together with the perfect balance of sweet, tangy, and spicy. The portions are generous, the food is fresh, and the flavors taste just like homemade Trini cooking. **A MUST VISIT RESTAURANT IN LITTLE GUYANA** **DELICIOUS…read moreFOOD & BAKERY ITEMS** A SPECIAL PART OF QUEENS Spanning about thirty blocks around Liberty Ave in Richmond Hill, is a very interesting neighborhood known as Little Guyana. An area where one of the largest populations of Guyanese immigrants reside in New York, along with others hailing from Trinidad, Jamaica, India, and Asia. As such, it's a bustling Indo-Caribbean mixing pot neighborhood, with - in some areas - a times square vibe. And most importantly, home to multiple restaurants, Carribean bakeries, clothing shops, grocery stores, and even Guyanese style Chinese food restaurants (Yes, that really is a thing!) EXPERIENCE LITTLE GUYANA AT SYBIL'S A fantastic way to start off your exploration of Little Guyana is to visit Sybil's Bakery. Here, Sybil, an expat from Guyana, along with her relatives and children, have been serving Guyanese specialties to the Richmond Hill community for almost 50 years. Offering steam tables filled with fantastic food, Bakery items, and authentic drinks. THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT Ask someone from Guyana, and they'll tell you that Sybil's is a top spot to visit in the neighborhood. Because of this, the restaurant can sometimes become very crowded, with a line spilling out the door, and down the sidewalk. So it's best not to visit during peak times if possible. And as it's a small restaurant with no tables, you must enter, grab a ticket from the dispenser, and then wait for your number to be called. And while waiting, it's a great time to check the various offerings in the steam table area, take a peak at all the bakery items and patties, and peruse the large menu above the counter. And to be honest, because of the large number of choices here, you really need to do this, so you'll have somewhat of an idea what to order when you're called. YOU HAVE TO TRY... Just about everything is delicious here, so all the standard Caribbean dishes, such as Jerk Chicken, Stewed Chicken, Fried Chicken, Oxtail, Curries and sides are all great choices. And then another wonderful item to try here, is Guyanese Pepper Pot, a traditional meat stew with a dark spiced gravy. And don't forget to order a tasty Roti to eat along with any saucy dishes you order. In addition, the fantastic Guyana Style Chinese items, such as the Chow Mein (fried noodles) and Fried Rice - which are my favorite- are seasoned exceptionally well with Caribbean spices, making these dishes hit differently, in comparison to other restaurants. Of course there are regular Jamaican style Beef Patties and Chicken Patties being served here, which are very tasty. But the Guyana style Patties, which are round, and packed full with either beef or chicken, & veg are scrumptious and unique. With these, the crust is more similar to that of a chicken pot pie, and the generous filling is fantastic. Meanwhile, because these are so friggin good, you will see people order them here by the dozen, to take home. So don't pass these up. Another popular choice, especially during lunch, are Sybil's famous Fish Sandwiches and Jerk Chicken Sandwiches. These start out with either fried fish or jerk chicken, along with lettuce, tomato, tartar sauce, another slightly sweet special sauce, and then some hot sauce, on a wonderful, mildly sweet and soft Coco Bread. Sybil's makes these sandwiches here, non-stop all day long, and there's a deliciously good reason why! BUT SYBIL'S IS A BAKERY ALSO! A trip to Sybil's for most people usually entails purchasing food, and then also Guyanese style baked goods. Some items of note, are the fresh Tennis Rolls, a dense, slightly sweet roll famous for being eaten with a nice slab of cheese in between, creating the best cheese sandwich ever. And if you enjoy cheese, the Cheese Roll pastry, the Cheese Pie tart and the Cheese Scone are also wonderful. And some examples of the sweeter style baked goods here, are the famous Guyana Pineapple Tarts and Guava Tarts which are a must try. Along with the Carrot Cake, Cassava Cake, Cherry buns, Coconut Drops, Chinese Cakes, Currant Rolls, and Solara, just to name a few. I LOVE THIS PLACE All in all, Sybil's is not a perfect restaurant. There are no tables to eat-in, it's usually crowded, and the ordering process can feel a bit rushed and intimidating your first time here. Moreover, if your looking for the best Trinidad style Doubles and Roti, then - without a doubt - Trinciti, Trini Delight and Singh's Roti Shop are better destinations. (Look for my previous review of Singh's Roti Shop if you have a chance). But let me tell you, if I am anywhere near Little Guyana, and I'm hungry, It's a good chance that I'm stopping at Sybil's for some of my favorite food and some magical baked items to take home. Because I really love this place, and if you get to know this unique restaurant like I do, I bet you may fall in love also.
