Servers are working above the posted speed limit. Looks like they need some more co-workers to ease the frantic level of activity. That said, the servers greeted us promptly, got the water glasses filled and took our opening drink orders. The first glasses of wine were on the table in less than 3 minutes. Food: we got crispy calamari, Cesar salad, felt mignon plate, wild salmon plate & creme brûlée. Overall very satisfying food all round. We decided to have our post-civil ceremony wedding celebration here for 9 people. Nawang was kind, responded quickly and great to work with! I especially appreciate being able to communicate via email back-and-forth, which made it much easier. We did a prix fixe menu, which ended up being the perfect way to go. We especially loved the printed menu with the congratulations message to us. When we arrived, the patio & our table were all set with menus at every setting. The food was great! We loved the appetizers, salads, and main courses. Everything tasted fresh! I highly recommend trying the chef sampler for dessert. It was a little bit of everything for all of us to enjoy. And of course, tasty wine and champagne. We were even served hot towels after eating, which was a thoughtful and elegant touch! Miguel, our server was very accommodating and friendly. Just had a great dinner here at Sonoma Grille. We were celebrating hubby's birthday, and decided on this restaurant after several of our first choices were all closed for holiday "recess" We had not dined here since 2017, and I believe that the restaurant had a different owner back in 2017, not sure. We arrived to a almost full house. Reservation at 6:30. Within 5 minutes we were seated at a quieter table in the bar area, and we were happy about that because the main room was pretty loud. The service at Sonoma Grille is absolutely exceptional. Timely visits to the table, gracious and pleasant wait staff. We started with a glass of Domaine Carneros Rose Sparkling as well as a glass of Imagery White Burgundy. Two very interesting wines. For our main entree we both ordered the Hanzell Pinot Noir. First a word about the wine list and the costs of wines by the glass. The list is pretty short, and the prices are up there in price. We paid $19 for a glass of Hanzell Pinot Noir and then discovered after looking it up you can buy it at Bottle Barn for $29 a bottle! That's a pretty high mark up (OH yeah we loved the Pinot and are rushing to Bottle Barn in Santa Rosa to buy it :))) We started with the Monterey Bay Calamari - really one of the best fried calamari dishes I have had. Lightly crisped, a little salty and not chewy at all, very tender. Then we shared a Caesar Salad. There could have been a little more dressing but the leaves of romaine were very crispy and fresh. I had the Wild King Salmon with garlic mashed potatoes and broccollini. It was excellent and perfectly cooked. The portion was rather large as well. Hubby had the beef filet mignon on garlic mashed potatoes and asparagus. He seemed to like his too, I tasted the meat and it was delish. I would like to go back, but this is a rather pricey restaurant. It doesn't seem to bother many as the dining room seems packed whenever we drive by. But the food is very good. This is a must-try spot if you're visiting Sonoma. I've been dining at Sonoma Grille for a while now, and it never disappoints. We shared some amazing appetizers, including the Vegetable Flatbread and Burrata, both bursting with flavor. The BBQ Oysters and Caesar Salad were also fantastic. As always, the Pappardelle was a winner - it's been my favorite dish since the first time I tried it. And of course, the Chocolate Torte is the perfect way to end the meal. The risotto was far better than an average risotto in that the texture was amazing, not over cooked, and the ratio of mushroom and cheese was just right. Listen, if you're in Napa, this restaurant is a MUST-TRY! Our service started off a bit rocky, but, was recovered by the end of our visit. We went on a perfect afternoon where the sun was shining and it was just the right amount of hot. Because it was such a beautiful day, we chose to sit outside and enjoy the weather and scenery. What I thought was neat is that there's a restroom outside in the patio area - super convenient...they also have oil lamps for when it gets a bit cooler. Everything I tried was pretty good, but, the star of the show was hands down the mussels...what I'd do to just get one more bite (or 10)!!! Those mussels were ev-er-ry-thing! The calamari was cooked perfectly but needed more seasoning and the marinara it was served with lacked flavor also but we still enjoyed it. I came with my Dad for New Years Eve dinner. Ill start out by saying the food was mostly good. They offered a prefixed menu. I ordered the blood orange salad, spinach pasta with sea scallops, and a pie with ice cream. My Dad ordered the lobster bisque, filet, and pie. The blood orange salad was fine. My Dad said the lobster bisque was his favorite thing. The sea scallops with spinach pasta was very good and easily my favorite thing. My Dad said his filet was cold and over cooked. He requested medium well but it was more well than anything. The desert. I think it was cranberry pie but not really sure since it wasn't really a pie. The vanilla ice cream was good but i could have done without the pie. It was a pretty lackluster dessert. The service seemed off maybe because they were so busy but they were attempting to take items before we were finished with them. And as soon as they cleared one course the next one came. We were seated at 7p and finished by 7:45p. Felt very rushed especially for a dinner that was $80 per person not including a set 18% tip. Our waiter never checked in with us except to give us the bill. And they refilled our water once at the end of the meal despite the glass being empty for maybe 30 minutes. Thats a huge minus for me. It may be my opinion but if someone only wants water then there glass shouldn't be empty for a long period of time. Overall pretty disappointed. We decided to have dinner here last minute and was happy to see that they have a nice patio for outdoor dining. Not only was the service great, I was pleasantly surprised by the food! To start, we ordered the raw oyster sampler (3 of each kind) and the Caesar salad. I liked that their oysters weren't too tiny and included my favorite, Fanny Bay! However, their Caesar salad was the BEST salad I've ever had. Their dressing is absolutely phenomenal and had the subtle taste of anchovies which made a huge difference - paired with croutons, crunchy lettuce, and shaved parmesan, I could probably eat this salad everyday. Highly recommend the Caesar salad! For our entrees, we ordered the seafood linguine and pappardelle. The linguine pasta was a little thicker than we expected but prepared al dente. Both pastas were really good and tasted super fresh, not sure if they make their own pasta in house but it sure tasted like they do! The seafood also tasted fresh and the sauces were flavorful. A dining flop in Sonoma. Expectations were high on the opening of Sonoma Grille and Bar. Downtown Sonoma badly needed another good restaurant. Unfortunately, Sonoma Grille and Bar was not it. Not even warmed, the bread basket ($6, really?) consists of room temperature bread served with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Ordered medium-rare, the overcooked and tasteless New York steak ($45) was a disappointment, and the accompanying green beans were cooked to mush. With a side of spinach and served atop a bed of cous cous, the red snapper ($33) was also uninspired. At least the cous cous was good. The dinner was saved from oblivion by the tiramisu ($11). Sprinkled with cinnamon and chocolate, the espresso and rum soaked lady fingers and mascarpone cream was light and delicious. Given the paucity of kitchen skills showcased in the other dishes, it must have been purchased, rather than made in-house. The wine list was fairly limited, and by the glass prices are quite steep. Service was pleasant, but overly so, almost to the point of being obsequious. With high prices and sub-par food quality, Sonoma Grille and Bar is one to miss. read more

Wonderful restaurant right around the corner from our usual hotel, and just off the plaza. We've been wanting to give it a try and this trip we finally made it. SERVICE: A little disappointing to start off. We arrived at 8:45pm, just before closing, and were seated by the host. The young lady who was our server never gave her name and was very curt, not friendly, a little off putting actually when she said the kitchen closes in two minutes because they hadn't had a table seated in over 30 minutes...I thought, why did the host seat us (bad communication)? If we had been told, we would've moved on and gone to another place. She just stood there looking at us (I think she wanted us to just leave). Well, we ordered quickly and got our drinks, our appetizer, and never saw her again. I was a little miffed by all this. When the Manager/Owner came by and we explained the situation, he stated, "I'm here as long as you're here." He was awesome and personally provided the type of service that you'd expect at a restaurant of this caliber. He truly saved the evening for us and from that moment forward, we had a wonderful experience. DRINK: Full bar, but we selected a glass of St. Francis Chardonnay ($10) and a glass of St. Francis Zinfandel ($13). The bar area is very nice, and I wouldn't mind sitting there for a nice meal or happy hour drink and appetizer. FOOD: We started with the Beef Carpaccio appetizer ($14) which was very tasty, however the balsamic vinegar and the capers slightly overpowered the beef, which was sliced paper thin. For entrées, my wife had the Filet Mignon ($41), served with garlic mashed potatoes, Cremini mushrooms and a bleu cheese butter and red wine sauce and it was fabulous. I had the Wild Mushroom Risotto ($20) with Cremini mushrooms, shallots, white wine, grated parmesan and a drizzle of white truffle oil. For an additional $14, I added tiger shrimp, for which I received five large prawns. I'm not a risotto expert, but this was the best one I've ever had...ever! For dessert we tried the Chocolate Torte ($9) which was tasty and rich. We washed it down with a glass of the Robledo Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc ($8) and a glass of Dows 20-year Tawny Port ($15). The food was simply amazing. Very flavorful and beautiful presentations. Sonoma Grille and Bar is an upscale restaurant with a nice, simple menu and a romantic atmosphere. We ate here Valentines Night when they featured a four course menu. The food was amazing and epic. The first course I tried was tartare ahi. So flavorful with a great texture. Absolutely near perfection. Second course was a lobster miso soup. Very good flavors and complexity. Third course was a filet mignon steak. So tender and tasty. The sauce it came with was wonderful. Another nearly perfect course. Final course was cheesecake desert with raspberry sauce. Very good overall with wonderful sauce. The wine list was very good and we liked the pinot noir we ordered. The bigger surprise was ordering their Manhattan drink. Best Manhattan I've ordered at a restaurant. Well done. The only downsides were small portion sizes and forced 20% tip. The portions are barely enough to feed a bird and we left hungry. Regarding the forced tip I just like having a choice on what to give. I usually give 20-30% depending on service. But if service isn't good I like having the choice to lower it. Service was great at this restaurant so it did work out in the end. I will absolutely go back to try their regular menu. Enjoyed another outstanding lunch at Somoma Grille. This is now my go to place next to the Swiss Hotel and The El Dorado to take visitors to Sonoma. I had cousins visiting Sonoma from Southern California and they wanted to go out to lunch. On previous visits in years past, they had been to the Swiss Hotel and El Dorado. So we went to Sonoma Grille. Excellent choice as everything was delicious and service was wonderful. I had the BLT sandwich. It was yummy! Served on fresh baked ciabatta bread with the best bacon. My arugula salad was scrumptious. Sonoma Grille has an array of salads as entrees. Next time I will try the Sonoma Grille burger. An extensive wine selection is available. I had the Italian Prosecco with my sandwich and salad, a nice compliment to a gratifying meal. Plenty of parking in back of the restaurant. I dreamed of a glass of Sancerre. I guess Sonoma has to be All California Wine unlike Petaluma. The salad came out first. So I just let it sit. BBQ oysters came out next and they were great. Three of us shared. I got a half a dozen Fanny Maes from Canada and to be polite the oysters were "tired" but not quit "off". Next time I'll try the bluepoints. The pear salad with raspberry vinaigrette was dandy. We shared it. My bride loved it. My bride had the ravioli. She really liked it. I've never seen "striped" ravioli before. My DIL had the xxx and really liked it. I loved my 1 1/4 lb (my guess) lobster for $55 that night. The. Fries were "white". It's Mother's Day and a bit of a chaotic environment, and our family didn't help calm the atmosphere with several small kids and a large party. The ambience is very nice and the waitstaff is very accommodating and professional. The entrees, however, were for the most part under-seasoned and overall unremarkable. I don't pretend to have a super sophisticated palette, but if I have to add salt and pepper, and the butter sauce for the clams from the seafood tower (which was admittedly quite good), I can confidently say the food is not seasoned very well. I ordered the salmon, which one of my family compared to an institutional dish one might be served at a senior center, for example, and I had to agree. I compared it to dinner at a hotel ballroom where you get to choose either the fish or the prime rib. Literally no part of the salmon dish impressed me, from the texture of the salmon, to the flavor, to the broccoli which was cooked ok, to the mashed potatoes, which were basic. I feel bad for even considering or suggesting this, but it could have been the salmon steaks from Costco, as well as the pre-cut broccoli that comes in a large bag in the Costco refrigerated section. The dish also needed some acid, but not just from a standard lemon wedge. I ordered the certified Angus beef tenderloin med-rare for my wife, which was cooked fine, but was also under-seasoned and topped with a blue cheese herb butter and red wine sauce that, to my palette at least, did not enhance the beef flavor very well. The asparagus was at least cooked correctly and plentiful on the plate. Sometimes restaurants can skimp on the veggies. I can't help but wonder if this restaurant is comparable to one of the establishments at Fisherman's Wharf or Monterey's Cannery Row, with inflated prices for mediocre food for hangry tourists visiting Sonoma. I can't complain too much as we were able to secure a reservation on Mother's Day for a large party with super short notice and I appreciate the restaurant hosting us. However, I can only assume that in this world famous Napa/Sonoma region known for fine wine and culinary mastery there are better tasting dishes found elsewhere (most definitely for higher prices). But, if you're in town and need a family friendly restaurant with the look and ambience of a cozy fine dining establishment, with the three-dollar-sign prices to match - and they have availability for you - you could likely do worse in this touristy neck of the woods. read more

Special dinner with the Mayor of Sonoma! He knows all the best places to eat and took me here when I said I wanted seafood. The Salmon was the best I have ever had in California. It tastes like it was fresh from the sea and I thought I was in Seattle. So tender and fresh! Very few people know how to properly prepare Salmon. We also had the Salmon Carpaccio and it was Smokey and smooth served with a lovely salad of fresh greens and shaved cheese. A lovely dinner was finished off with a wonderful dessert.
