I am not as familiar with Cambodian food but thought the food here was pretty good! I wasn't as much of a fan of the papaya salad here though (tried the version with tomato) - there was a second version that I might try next time. The lort chha was tasty and the pin noodles were a new type of noodle for me - as a noodle lover, I enjoyed the chance to try something new. The noodles were chewy and soft. The chow ho fun was alright but I think I prefer Cantonese beef chow fun instead which has a bit of a smokier flavor to it. We ordered delivery so I can't comment on ambiance but our food was delivered quickly and well packaged. The pork with pineapple is good, but a little too sour for me. The stir fried noodles (lort cha) is okay, a little too oily, I have had better. The sngour jruok mohn is a sweet and sour soup with mushroom and your choice of meat. It is not spicy at all, kinda a nice solid soup. Finally got down to check out Sophie's Kitchen and my only regret was taking so long to get there. I cannot say I've had a lot of Cambodian food but I can say I've had a lot of good food and Sophie's kitchen delivered good Cambodian food. I appreciate how they could customize the spicy level on nearly all their dishes, so no limitations for you or your friends who might not be into spice. I had frog legs for the second or third time, this time fried, and yes they do taste like chicken. E3 (a sautéed seafood dish I won't attempt to pronounce) was amazing. It's hard to find Cambodian restaurants so we were very pleasantly surprised when we found this place! We came a bit earlier than typical dinner hours so we were seated and served quickly. I could see how this place could get really busy during popular dining times as it started picking up when we finished our meal. They offer a variety of food items on their menu. I will be back all the time for takeout, but for this first visit I was lucky to dine in. I got to try the frog legs, beef skewers, papaya salad, and chicken curry. Every single item was great but the beef skewers were my favorite bite of the night. Super umami flavor and tender beef. This cambodian restaurant is a great hidden spot in south philly! It's super popular so be prepared for a wait if you're going during peak dinner hours. I went with a friend on a friday evening and we got a table after 45 minutes and it was another at least half hour before our food came out, because there was only one staff manning both the first and second floor. She was our waitress and the sweetest! Food wise, their appetizer deep fried chicken wings are a banger. It's perfectly fried with a crunchy bite, and sweet and savory, in a lemongrass and tamarind sauce. We were recommended their stir fried pin noodles, which was decent. You can choose your own protein, and I did like the texture of the noodles - it's rice based and similar to udon, but chewier - but I did think the noodles were a bit greasy. The curry had a nice kick to it and was okay - paired well with rice. Next time, I am curious to try their frog legs. The prices here are super reasonable, and the inside of the restaurant is cozy. Our server Tony was so kind and hospitable, and was very happy to share the stories behind his family's restaurant (Sophie is his mom!) and some of the traditional dishes on the menu. We ordered the tossed papaya salad, sautéed chicken curry, and Spices & Sour Lemongrass soup (Somlawe Majou Kroeung). The soup was definitely our favorite and was so comforting on a cold snowy day! Tony explained to us that the soup is a staple in Cambodian homes and gave helpful tips on how to best enjoy it with rice, of which we were given generous free refills! My only regret is not getting more of the soup to take home because it supposedly tastes even better the next day (especially if you get it with pork ribs)! read more

This Cambodian place has a noodle dish I would describe as if Korean Toppoki and Taiwanese beef noodle soup had a love child in Cambodia - it would be this dish Lort Chha! Not as soupy, but with all the flavor reduced to into the noodles and beef. Beef skewers are also very tasty to start with. Kinda like gyukaku tendered and charred slices on a stick with a Cambodian sweet glaze. Again another must try in Philly. Service was super friendly and reservations preferred. Today my family was refused service at Sophie's Kitchen in South Philadelphia because my son's service dog (Nugget) was with us. Let that sink in. A child with a disability. A trained medical service animal. Turned away at the door. This was supposed to be a Lunar New Year family meal with grandparents and kids. It's been awhile since I had added Sophie's kitchen on my list and finally got to try it. This place is a hidden gem on Washington Ave. We ordered the frog legs to share. The batter was super crispy and light and for a dish this simple it was delicious and had such a nice flavor. The texture of the meat is similar to chicken drumsticks but lighter. I would highly recommend this dish. For our main, I got sautéed chicken with house curry (red) and my SO got sautéed seafood with green curry. They both had incredible flavor. I'm in love with their chicken wings, they are juicy and tender inside and still have that crunchiness outside. You can choose Tamarind, Sweet Chili, Lemon Pepper, or Lemongrasses for your seasoning to go with the wings, but my favorite is the Sweet Chili. So spicy, so good! The beef stick is also decent! What a delicious Cambodian restaurant. I have heard such great things about this place for years and finally had the opportunity to check it out. Sophie's Kitchen looks very locally run/owned. It also has two floor seating which was pretty cool. We ordered drinks to start out with. We had the Thuk Sarow (both the pink and green one). I loved the pink flavor vs the green one. We also had some chicken skewers. In my opinion, the skewer meat quality was average and I couldn't really taste the marinade sauce. They did give a fair quantity of chicken, however. I had the Japanese eggplant sautéed as my entree. I really enjoyed how much eggplant there was and how it came in coconut milk. Somlawe Majou Kroeung with pork ribs was PHENOMENAL. I've never had it before, but it was a perfect tangy, spicy, and savory soup. The veggies inside were all super soft and the meat was tender. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. This was a highlight for sure and I can see why the server recommended it. The papaya salad was crunchy and had abundant flavor. Overall a good spot to try, not the common Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese dishes you get elsewhere. Pin noodles were decent, you can choose your protein and add a fried egg. Couldn't agree more with the raving reviews of Sophie's kitchen. We had the most excellent experience for a group birthday dinner on Sunday. We got there at 6 PM so got a lot of service and attention immediately including by Tony, Sophie's son! We were seated upstairs and it was empty except for us when we arrived, but completely full by the time we left. We got to meet Sophie at the end of the meal. We pretty much ordered the entire menu (we passed on the frog legs!) and one item was better than the next. The flat wide rice noodles with veggies was my favorite, but as per the other reviews, the mango salad and the chicken wings are not to be missed. Each item was served on unique /eclectic serving plates which was a lovely touch. It is BYO and we brought in a huge cooler with no objections. We also brought in a traditional ice cream cake for the dinner honoree with no objections. There was plenty of parking in the neighborhood which I wasn't expecting so that was an added bonus. Been here a couple of times. Sit upstairs. This past time, Donovan who is one of the sons (previously his brother waited on me and my daughter) waited on me and my dining partner. Amazing service and he made suggestions on what to order. The wings are probably the best I've ever had. He suggested swai in a banana leaf which was absolutely delicious. Sophie's Kitchen is a small corner restaurant that serves some authentic Cambodian food in the city! The space inside is rather limited, so that is something to keep in mind. There is a friendly ambiance inside and the servers are all very kind. My friend insisted on ordering traditional Cambodian food, so we went for the Bok Lahong, Chha Gkroeung, and Somlawe Majou Kroeung, which were all at medium spice levels. The Bok Lahong or papaya salad was really tangy, but in a good way. It paired well with the other dishes as something a bit more refreshing to eat. We got the Somlawe Majou Kroeung with chicken and it was a delicious spicy and sour soup! Because of its sourness, I recommend eating it with the rice. The Chha Gkroeung is a sautéed lemongrass dish which we ordered with beef. It was also good, but the marinade on the beef tasted a bit peanut-y to me rather than lemongrass-y? But it may have been my tastebuds. We also got the Thai Iced Tea, which was rich in tea flavor, and the Iced Coffee, which was pretty strong. Both were delicious drinks to have with our meal. Overall, I feel like Sophie's Kitchen is a place people have to try, probably with a big group as the dishes can be shared family style! What can I say, this is an awesome place with super delicious Cambodian food. I recently found out this place is owned and operated by the same family who had Khmer Kitchen years ago! When they closed due to family reasons I was so sad. Sophie's Kitchen is larger and the food cooked by the mother (whereas Khmer Kitchen was cooked by the grandmother). The service is down to earth, friendly, and efficient. It is a really comfortable place to get together with friends and families. Finally, I decided to give it a try with a friend and I must say it surprised me. Food was delicious. We had Amok Trei (Fish curry steamed in banana leaves) and it was amazing. It was so flavorful, but wish it had more veggies (green leaves). There's one popular dish that you have to order here is the Prohok Ktiss (fermented fish w minced pork) dip with side of various veggies. It was also good and full of kreung flavor, which I like. However, the mussels curry sauce was too sweet for my taste. Other than that everything was great. I like the inside atmosphere with plants are around the table. Walked inside and we were immediately greeted and asked if we wanted to go upstairs. Surprisingly, when we walked in we thought it was cute but small, we had no idea there was an upstairs and were delighted to see a bigger area with more guest. Staff was very friendly, attentive, and helpful with explaining what certain things were and tried comparing them to things we may have been familiar with. We ordered the pink drink which was a sweet, milky drink...to me it was too sweet and I love all things sugar but this was a lot, ended up getting a soda. The Thai tea was good but could've used more sweetener. We ordered the chicken and beef skewers and the fried chicken with the sweet chili sauce. OMG, they were amazing. Everything was cooked to perfection and flavored so well. The fried chicken was amazing. You can decide on how hot or mild you'd like. The skewers are served with a mini cucumber/carrot salad. For our main meal, I had the chicken over onions, peppers, and string beans and it came with white rice. OMG this was soool amazing, the flavor, I couldn't stop eating and I was stuffed. I'm really serious, you can't go wrong - you'll experience salty, sour, sweet, umami flavors in every dish. And again, bring friends, because the portions for a single dish can usually be split between at least 2-3 people. It's also a BYO. It was a quiet Monday night with a few tables of patrons and a steady flow of customers picking up take out orders. Everything listed on the menu sounded appetizing. My son was disappointed because it wasn't spicier, and there's no hot sauces offered. He probably should have asked to have his dish made hotter. Our group ordered bok la hong with peanuts, fried chicken, chicken cha karee, chicken sngour jrouk, and pork somlawe majou kroeung. They were all fantastic. My personal favorite was the fried chicken, both the normal and extra spicy version. The chicken pieces were generously dipped into a sweet and spicy sauce. We celebrated a friend bday with some Paris Baguette cake. When they served the slices, they thoughtfully warned the spoons up. Tried to order from here at least 2-3 times a month. Enjoying Khmer cuisine while supporting local business is something I try to do often. Called in earlier for pick up. Ordered almost $75 worth of food and was told my order should be ready in 30-40 minutes. I don't live in the area. Got there in 45 minutes and paid via credit card just to be told that my food wasn't ready. Hell... they didn't even start on it because they are short staffed and got busy since people were dining in. I was given 2 options: 1. Get a refund OR 2. Wait another 45 minutes I chose a refund. I understand that businesses are short staffed but next time, they need to do their due diligence by contacting the customers if they're backed up. Totally unacceptable. A few things to note: Khmer Kitchen was my favorite restaurant of all time, and definitely in Philly. I was heartbroken to learn it closed, and then I moved away from Philly. I had no idea they reopened at all, and upon moving back to Philly last year I didn't know when I'd have the chance to go explore a new favorite Cambodian restaurant. Cut to last night: My friend's threw me a birthday dinner without telling me where we're going. I arrive at the location to find out it's Sophie's Kitchen, but I didn't even know what kind of food it was! And then I see Tony, the knowledgeable and friendly waiter from Khmer Kitchen and he recognizes me from 8 years ago! My friends had zero prior knowledge of my intense love for Khmer Kitchen (I wrote them two Yelp reviews!) so it was total kismet and birthday magic that I we celebrated my birthday with a meal here. And what a meal it was! I think this family consistently makes a dining experience where every single bite of food is better than the last. Dishes are bursting with flavor in combinations you haven't tried elsewhere. We had the lemongrass chicken wings, sweet chili chicken wings, chicken and beef skewers, the flat noodles with vegetables, the curry coconut soup with pineapple, the sautéed morning glories, the calamari, a green curry, and the fried snapper. Our group of 6 were absolutely stuffed! Every single thing was scrumptious. I don't even have the words to truly articulate how good this meal was. The piece de resistance, as always, was the fried snapper with black bean and ginger sauce. Everything I wrote in my review for Khmer Kitchen in years past about this dish held true, and it was even more delicious because it held up to the nostalgia. I legit think it was birthday magic to discover that my favorite restaurant is back and better than ever.
