I used to like their cakes & cupcakes, but recently ordered some cupcakes, and when I was waiting to get them (since they weren't ready for me), heard a lot! #1- they keep everything in the freezer... apparently, they stock the freezers then pull from there- you are NOT getting a freshly baked cake! They asked when they were going to be eaten & when I said the next day, the counter girl said "OK, that will give them time to thaw- ha ha"- OK, if I am paying that much, they should be FRESH! #2 When I was asking about a cake (which I ultimately ordered elsewhere, obviously), I dealt with a "designer" who had the vocabulary of an uneducated 12 year old who swore a lot. Now, I am very liberal, but when you work with customers, you have to be careful about that type of thing. Super unprofessional, and very, very much a turn off. #3 I didn't bother complaining to the owner, since I have seen her in action (while I was waiting forever for my cupcakes, she was in the midst of an argument with a customer on the phone & then hung up & talked about it with the other employees- at least I know where her employee got her cue for unprofessional behavior), but I will make sure everyone I know from the area goes elsewhere for their bakery needs... I had a wonderful experience here when I had to order a cake last minute. My dad ended up in the hospital the week of his birthday. We wanted to do something really special for him since he was not set to be released till the day after. My mom was recommended this place by a friend so I called them up and apologetically asked if there was any way they could have a cake ready the next day. (Their site says to give 7 days notice, especially on weekends and in their busy months, which is now). I explained the design and was told to email the picture I wanted. It was ready by noon the next day, which was his birthday. My dad is a Seinfeld fan so the cake said "Happy Birthday Anti-Dentite". It was perfect, exactly how I wanted it, and he loved it. I don't really like cake but everyone raved about it, including the hospital staff who got to finish the rest after my family ate. The staff was extremely friendly and actually got the reference haha. They let my sister and I use the bathroom after our long drive to Philly. I moved in to the Drexelbrook apartments a few months ago, and had never had anything from Sophisticakes before then. Now I unfortunately can't get enough! I love the chocolate salted caramel cupcakes, the cannoli's, chocolate chip cookies, and their chocolate cake (which has the taste and texture of a brownie) is to die for. I have bought bakery items for many dinner parties and events since moving here a few months ago. A few weeks ago, I even went to a bridal shower where they had a cake from Sophisticakes all the way up in the Northeast. And everyone at the party ate multiple pieces it was just so good. I found this bakery after exhausting every recommend bakery to no avail. In frustration I called and blindly placed an order for a 3D cake shaped like an Oscar Award. First, they exceeded my expectations in the design of the cake. I couldn't have expected such an accurate depiction of what I wanted. Just the look of it was the highlight of the party. You will be disappointed. The people there obviously don't care about pleasing you, just cutting corners. They fell way short of giving the customer (me) what I asked for. Their attempt at giving the cake I ordered some white chocolate flavor (for my girlfriend, who loves white chocolate) was pathetic. When I ordered a cake for my girlfriend's milestone birthday, I expressed that she loves white chocolate. Although they didn't have white chocolate frosting, the lady who took my order said that white chocolate shavings could be put on top. I was expecting shavings almost as big as cheese shavings so that my girlfriend could taste the white chocolate. When I saw the cake, however, the shavings were smaller than pencil shavings. Each one was about the size of the tip of a ball-point pen, and they added nothing to the flavor when we ate the cake. I told the lady who brought the cake out that I had expected more white chocolate, but she was only concerned about getting my initials on the back of the receipt. I did not want to make a scene, so, I decided to write a review instead. Your wishes and details will be ignored. Case in point: I wanted "Happy Birthday, Ivana" written on the cake. I saw the lady write the comma (I wanted to see if they would notice) on the order form. I know that it's not a huge deal that the comma was left off of the cake, but, it proves that the people there did not pay attention to what I wanted. I will never go back again. They made me look like an idiot and a fool. I think that it's pretty incredulous that people in a bakery have absolutely no conception of how to make a cake with some white chocolate flavor to it -- either that, or they just don't care. read more

I have always been completely satisfied with Sophisticake but this time I was a little disappointed. I ordered a cake for my granddaughter's third birthday party with PJ Masks theme. I spoke to Rachael on the phone, she helped me come up with a great cake idea. She suggested that I get the characters to be placed on the cake. After searching for a while I finally found them (apparently they are popular) and dropped them off at Sophisticakes. The lady that waited on me on took the characters assured me that she would take care of it. My son picked up the cake for me. When I saw the cake everything was perfect except the characters were missing. I called them back and spoke to Kathy. She asked me where the party was. They sent someone out to park where we were!! Extremely HORRIBLE customer service ! We started our order for a Birthday cake for our little girls 2nd birthday with a girl named DENESE . It was for a Belle princess sheet cake pretty basic some yellow piping some red roses and a few pictures on cake which required images. Our price originally was 166.00 for 1/4 sheet cake lol . We asked what it would cost to downgrade the roses to plain buttercream and to upgrade the cake to a half sheet cake . That was asked via email and DENESE responded she would change the order and the new price was 150.00 . Which we felt better about . We told her we would be up on the weekend to put the deposit onto the cake bc they required 75.00 up front . We got there on Saturday we asked about paying our deposit. We were asked to hold on a second as they were looking for our order . My husband told them we were working with a girl named DENESE and the order was for feb 19 . We were asked if we were sure it was ordered lol duh yeah I'm pretty sure that's why we're here to pay anyway I referenced that they can confirm by looking at email bc there was back and forth correspondence through via email. So after waiting a bit they found the slip and she rudely said it's 166.00 . I said no it was changed to 150 changes were made via email please look at the email. I got angry at this point and walked out with my daughter and let my husband finish the order inside . He paid the 75.00 and came out with no receipt . I sent him back in to get one bc I did not trust them to lose paperwork and say we didn't pay . So the receipt he brings out is written 1/4 sheet cake 166.00 .I'm stunned bc we just went through this the cake was changed to half sheet quoted at 150.00. I ask for the manager who could of cared less basically said to us if you don't want the cake take your money back . I simply asked her to please correct the receipt and just do the cake right . I left about a hour later we get a email asking us for clearer images for the cake which wasn't a problem when we ordered it but whatever we send 5 individual images. We had to send them 4 times because the girl DENESE said she wasn't getting them . My husband works in IT field he sent the images through his google account google sends a return email clearly stating sofisticakes saw the images. So my husband calls up there ask for DENESE and she says very ignorantly she don't have them oh well so my husband says I will send them again now and call you back . He calls back after the images were sent she gets on the phone and does not even say hello she snapped I got them we will work with them and hangs up . At this point we are beyond done and we don't want to do business there . My husband goes up there to cancel our order and get our deposit back the manager never even cared to ask why she says I have to give you Check I can't take money out of my drawer it will mess up my accountant lol whatever she writes a check . It was written out at Wells Fargo I have a account there so no issue I got my money instantly but I think she was trying to make me lose money knowing if I didn't have a account I would be charged really petty ! I would not recommend this bakery to anyone unless you want horrible customer service rude attitudes and want to feel like you don't matter as a customer. As far as the quality of the cakes we did do our daughter 1st birthday cake there was a really nice Minnie Cake star piping with a smash cake paid 240.00 it was really good that's why we came back . However this goes to show you it don't matter to them if you were a repeat customer they just don't care . Rude when things go wrong or not the way they want . Their cupcakes are served cold almost rock hard you need to thaw them to eat it so not fresh . The cookies my daughter got one looked real pretty but could break a tooth so rock hard and didn't taste good could of got better at the supermarket. Sophisticakes did an amazing job on my daughter's 5th Birthday cake. My wife and I went in a week before her party and had no idea what we wanted. The young lady helped us go online and find ideas of the cake we would want. She was very patient with us and help us to design the perfect cake. When I went to pick up the cake the day of the party I was more than amazed by how the cake came out! It exceeded the idea that we had and took the basic idea we found online to another level. Came to find out they need more notification then 5 days and told me I could have a chocolate chip cake on Saturday instead. I found that very disheartening. Disclaimer: I have only tried the macarons and bought a pie from here, but I was pleased with the experience. I came here the day before Thanksgiving to get a pie. I wanted something from a bakery rather than getting a sub par pie from the grocery store. I was disappointed that they had run out of pumpkin pie (but I don't blame them since it was the day before Thanksgiving!) so I went with a mixed berry, which looked nice. I also decided to try some macarons because they are so pretty and I had never tasted one before. The woman behind the counter was extremely helpful, gave me advice to select flavors that are not bland/chalky, and showed me a cheat sheet flavor guide. I pass by this joint a couple times a week on the way home from work if I hit up the supermarket around the corner. It wasn't until I was at a birthday party and had their cake did I ever consider going there. As a creature of habit, when I needed a cake I would go with the usual. But after having their cake I decided to stop by and get Sticky Buns since I was all out of birthdays until next month. They have them with pecans or with raisens. They both are delicious. They are only available on the weekends which for some reason makes me to want them more, especially on Tuesday. They last a few days if you don't scarf them all down in one sitting. Where do I start? So I've been ordering from this bakery for years, literally years. Birthdays, farewells, special occasions, you name it. I've told everyone I know about how wonderful the cake is and how much I look for any excuse to order their cakes. I've even ordered cakes for family and work occasions over the years. Well, all that has changed in just an instance and it is indeed a shame that the owner, not employees (who were reasonable by the way) threatened to call the police on me because I told her that they messed up on cake my order in more ways than 1 and that the $50 they were offering was not sufficient. After all, we spent $228.99 on the cake and didn't mind doing so because I trusted the quality of their product. So, my husband ordered a cake for my birthday/gender reveal party and it was a royal disaster to say the least. They got the colors completely wrong, didn't color the inside like they were supposed to, and to top it off, the fondant fell and broke. The owner took absolutely no responsibility for their mistake, blamed the mistake on my husband's "accent" when I tried to be reasonable by offering that they may have misheard him due to his accent. To top it off, she ultimately said we were lying and threatened to call the cops if I came to establishment, after I said I would come in with my husband to further discuss the issue because we had not resolved it. This is after I told her that I have no reason to lie and sent pictures as proof and told her that I am a loyal customer and have been for years. It's such a shame because their cake is delicious but if you're going to mess up my order, remain unapologetic, and be borderline racist then we're going to have a problem because that is not acceptable. I am a professional and in return, I expect professional service. It's okay to make mistakes but simply admit to it. It's a shame the employees were reasonable and the owner is a complete asshole. My advice, find a bakery that has good customer service because the owner of Sophisticakes is simply ignorant. They just lost one great customer and any referrals that I brought to the establishment is walking out the door with me. There's nothing more that I despise that terrible customer service and that's the last impression that I was left with. What ever happened to meeting your customers needs? Smh. Okay, so I'm not alone in experiences at Sophisticakes! I lived in the apartments behind the bakery for two years, so my guilty pleasure trips were regular. I wanted each visit to be the one to make me fall in love...but, alas, it wasn't meant to be. It was always hit or miss. I know it can be that way on, say, a Monday...but, come on, stale cupcakes on a Saturday afternoon? Rock-hard chocolate chip cookies with wayyy too many chips (yes, there is such a thing)? Yeah, they're as big as your hand, but if they're not so good, what's the point? And the cupcakes are actually really good when they're fresh. The chocolate salted caramel, the strawberry(!), even the plain pound...But they're often stale (and taste like they've sat in the fridge too long) or are just hard, even after you let them thaw out *ahem*... Sophisticakes freezes their cakes, for sure. Much like that reviewer mentioned, I have overheard more than I need to about their goods, and about their customers ("nuts," "cheapskates," et al.). I'm sure all businesses have their share, but it's very unprofessional to talk smack about PAYING customers with other PAYING customers in the store! Hearing an owner gossip about a "whackjob" who complained because you apparently ruined her cake does not make me want to order a cake from you. It's not a good look. But I digress...I've heard the decorators say that the cake was "still frozen," and I have had cupcakes that were icy in the middle. I understand freezing some things, but, no, I don't think that it's fair to give frozen cake to a customer who's ordering ahead and paying premium price. Overall, Sophisticakes is more good than bad. The shop (new expansion and reno) is really cute. They have some really tasty things (moist wrapped cake slices, CRUMB CAKE!, double fudge brownies, bar cookies, adorable sugar cookies), and they do really beautiful design work. And the counterpeople (Suzanne, the redheaded designer, the funny Irish woman, the sassy blonde girl) are actually nice and helpful, but everybody needs to keep their voices down. Hopefully they (really, the owner) will be receptive to their customers' genuine complaints. Delco needs a cute, modern place like this, so I hope they can make improvements. read more

I've been to this location twice and each time I left satisfied. The first time I took a leap of faith and purchased treats of all kinds for my whole family. Everyone, including myself, loved them. The second time I went back and purchased a chocolate cake for a family party. It was delicious! Trying to plan a birthday party at a distance can be a challenge, to say the least. But I thought I had it made when I found Sophisticakes' website. The photos told me they could make beautiful cakes, and I felt it safe to assume they would taste as good as they look. The decorated cake photos showed a passionate attention to detail, but as it turns out this was totally misleading. I called and made an appointment, since I would be traveling into the area for two days only and had all my other appointments lined up. Kathy, the owner, was very personable on the phone and assured me she would have her designers come up with sketches prior to my appointment. I left my cell phone number in case anything came up and she needed to move the appointment. I did not hear from her and assumed we were still on. However, on the appointed day she was totally unprepared. This after my driving 250 miles! And Kathy KNEW I was driving 250 miles to meet with her. Okay, you are busy. I understand. But the look of utter annoyance on the owner's face when I showed up was not okay. And did I mention I can read lips? I know what she was saying to the counter girl back there, and it wasn't at all nice. In fact, it is the last thing you would say if you ever wanted to keep a customer. At that point I decided to cancel the cake order. The last thing I need is to worry about whether the cake will get lost again, leaving me with nothing to serve to my guests, and I certainly don't need a bunch of attitude along with it. My advice to Sophisticakes is to try to be grateful for the customers you have and not treat them as an annoyance. Companies who don't care about their business soon go OUT of business. And try to manage your paperwork a little better. Watching Kathy rummage around in stacks of paper all over the store looking for my order didn't do anything to inspire confidence in her business ability. It just looked inept and inefficient. I live in the area of this bakery so it's very convenient, but after the past experiences I am steering far clear of here. My husband ordered a birthday cake years back, all chocolate with raspberry. Terrible. I don't base this review on that experience though. I worked at a bakery myself and know there are mediocre combinations at any place. I decided yellow cake was more their forte. So a few months back I stop to get some cake slices and pecan bars for dessert. No one in the store even acknowledged my presence. They all looked up from their work too. I know there is maybe only one salesperson on a Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon, but the least the other cake decorators could do was say hello and that someone would be with my shortly. I walked out. At least 5 minutes past from the time I walked in the door . However, what really has sealed it for me was me walking by this past Sunday and 2 of the cake decorators were outside awaiting a person with a dog. They proceeded to pet the dog and the dog brushing against their aprons! To top it off the dog came in the shop with them. I was disgusted. It was not a service animal, had no harness, it was being petted which indicates pet. I am sorry to say that I will not even consider returning to this bakery. read more

I called to discuss the errors and was placed on hold and told that I was wrong, the cake is fine and as I ordered. The shape was cut poorly and the colors were not even close to what I ordered. I have gone to Sophisticakes before and had an okay experience (ordered cupcakes for a bridal shower that looked like they were frosted by a 4 year old). I went to order 8 cupcakes for a small birthday/graduation celebration, regular chocolate chip pound with blue icing instead of white, a simple request, or so I thought. I went 2 days before I needed the cupcakes (maybe a little late notice, but I didn't think my request would require more than 48 hours to slap some blue icing on 6 cupcakes). I was told I was not able to place my order because it was too late. This was EXTREMELY disappointing because I thought it was an easy request (plus an easy $25 in their pocket). I decided to take a few cupcakes home with me as a treat. I chose the Peanut Butter ones, my favorite! Well, to say I was dissappointed is the understatement of the century! I have walked in and had a cake ready to go out the door within minutes. They have never failed to provide me with a cake when needed and even better/most importantly their cakes are amazing.
