Friend and I didn't know exactly what to expect. I've been to several ayce hot pot places,.but never an a la carte hot pot. You pick your broth, you go to their ingredient bar, put the things you want into your bowl, and you pay by weight. Depending on your base, it's about 16-19 bucks a lb. They recommend 1.0-1.5 lbs, and there's a scale there so you can see where you are. The veggies all looked fresh. Many mushroom choices, veggies, fish balls, herbs, and a freezer full of sliced meats. Can't go wrong with beef brisket. The sauce bar is probably the most important section of a hot pot place. All liquids were available - soy sauce, hoisin, sesame oil, sriracha, sesame paste, chili oil, and others I'm missing. Scallions, garlic, chili flakes, fried garlic pieces, etc. It's a great sauce bar. Everything was clean inside. Will return. The staff was very helpful and attentive. read more

If you're looking for authentic Chinese Mala Xiang Guo, this place isn't it. It's more of a Korean version of Mala Xiang Guo. It should have been obvious to me since it's in Annadale and it says so in the description. The flavors aren't quite a sharp and fragrant as the real Chinese version for me. They even have a black mala Xiang Guo which is like Jjajangmyeon and Mala Xiang Guo combo. It looks interesting, I might try it next. While it's not authentic, the ingredients are fresh. If you're not hung up on traditional mala Xiang Guo flavors, you might like the place. It probably explains the high rating. I personally prefer the authentic version. Currently, that's Lai Lai Malatang inside 99 Ranch. At this place, you wait to be seated. Then go to the ingredients area and pick everything you want into a bowl and bring it to the cooking counter and ask for the flavor you want and select the spicy level. We picked medium and it wasn't spicy at all. Another down side is the price at $16.99/lb. I can get better mala xiang Guo at a lower price in Lai Lai Malatang so I don't know why I should bother driving 30 minutes to come here. The decoration wasn't standing out to me but at least it was clean. The staff were friendly and helpful. The area is the right amount of busy but you may be able to find a parking spot right out front since there seems to be enough space. read more

This is the only pick-up-your-stuff, standalone malatang place I know in the DMV as of this writing and it's actually Korean, but we'll take it. I'm already familiar with the concept of this restaurant from going to these types of malatang places in California, but I did think it was strange that the staff did not try to explain how everything worked. On the plus side, they have a scale for you to weigh the food you put in the bowl before you pay. I got the Mala Xiang Guo at Level 3 Hot. They are not playing with the heat here. I wonder how anyone could stand the spiciness of the top two levels. I would go down to Level 2 next time so I can enjoy the meal a little more. I was pleased with the selection of ingredients. What was different for me here is all the meats are pre-packaged into bundles, leaving less room (or weight) for you to mix. I also wished I asked for a bowl of white rice to go along with the dry pot. Would have been helpful to soak up all the spicy sauce. There are lots of Korean dishes on the menu I didn't get to try. You can try to leave room for a dish if you don't go heavy on the hot pot or dry pot, but it might be hard to resist when you're filling up your bowl! read more

I love that you can completely customize your hot pot or stir fry bowl from the noodles, meat, veggies and endless toppings. You can also pick the type of sauce base as well as the spicy level. After you pick all your toppings they cook it for you and bring it to your table. If you go crazy with the toppings your meal is going to be very pricey so be careful to not overload it. I got the rose mala sauce and it was really delicious, I loved it. The servers are really friendly and helpful. There's also a large drink menu and other food items on the menu like rice and tteokbokki. I love the unique concept of this place and can't stop thinking about my yummy bowl. read more

Is this the most authentic mala I've ever had? Probably not, but that's okay since it might not be what Sorimmara is trying to be. To me it is an approachable mala tteokbokki fusion spot with fresh ingredients, customizable and unique flavors, a solid price point at $16.99 per pound, and approachable service. I went during the day and really enjoyed the relaxed ambiance. That said, I'd definitely come back for a late dinner and drinks at the bar. They offer fun, nostalgic beverages along with some creative cocktails. The orange cream soda was especially tasty and paired surprisingly well with the spicy mala. If you can handle heat, I'd recommend going up on your spice level. I chose level two and found it very mild. Rose Mala Hotpot 10/10 - I usually get a level 4 or 5 spicy with flat noodles, quail eggs, beef, water chest nuts, rice cake, etc - I'm sure any noodles would be delicious but the flat noodles are perf and so chewy - I've tried the regular Mala hotpot too, but def prefer the Rose now for the extra sauce! Mala tang!! One of the only self service mala tang places in the DMV area. Pick your toppings and then weigh. So fun to customize your own bowls. Make sure not to overdo it, my friends bowl came out to be $45... Cooked fast and came out sizzling. Love how spicy the soup broth is and how it comes out hot! You can change the heat and it stays warm throughout. Also a sauce and condiments bar where you can get radishes and dip. You can also buy drinks here. Excellent place to try Korean style mala!! Sorimmara is a Korean franchise with many locations in Korea so you know it's legit. It's the perfect spot for everyone because you create your own bowl with your own flavor. Also one of the few places that open a little later :-) You can order dishes that are already made, but that star is creating your own dry pot (or 1 soupy mala option). Price is by weight so you can grab as many or little of each ingredient you want from veggies to noodles to meat, etc. Then you choose your flavor for your pot, and they cook all the ingredients in the back for you. My favorite flavors are tomato, black mala (jajang) , and rose mala! There's even a sauce bar, but I don't really need it since it's already so flavorful. I don't recommend putting garnishes like cilantro or green onions in the beginning since they have it at the sauce station (less weight). I actually love eating their kimchi on the side!! read more

I LOVE tteokbokki but most are seafood and I have shellfish, crustacean, and mollusk allergies (so for ease, I just say "seafood allergies" especially as I am also not a fan of seafood anyways). At Sorimmara, you can either do the create-your-own-pay-per pound or they also have a selection of tteokbokki dishes. I elected for the rose sauce and added cheese and ramen - taste was spot on and size was HUGE for one person. I also ordered the small pork Guabaorou and IT IS NOT SMALL! It was yummy but definitely needs more sauce AND you should eat this right away before it gets hard to chew. read more

The only thing that confused me was that the meats were located in a freezer next to the sauce station instead of along their wall of other items. I got the malatang base at a level 3 spice and it was definitely very spicy but in a very enjoyable way. They also have a level 0 spice for those who don't enjoy spicy foods. Man oh man I been looking for a place like this for a long time! This places basically a build you own bowl and you weight it at the end. its around 15-18 per pound. The selection of meats, veggies and noodles is amazing and I got very full and satisfied after eatings Can't wait to go back and try the other flavors and heat levels. I am really sad I forgot pictures but I can say the decor was very fun and the services was pretty solid. And I think one of the best parts was that its open very late which is know alot of people appreciate. read more

Really interesting! This place was fun and unique. The panda mascot was also cute as heck. I have been wanting to try Malatang so it was really nice to have a local spot to try. It's mostly self serve where you get a table and then go to the back section to fill a bowl with your preferred ingredient. You might need to go back to this place more than once to get your perfect bowl though! Once you have the bowl to fill there is a large selection of noodles and vegetables to choose long with fish balls, tofu, some random proteins and a meat section. I went with a rose malatang and lots of veggies and too many noodles. Totally recommend a ton of veggies! They were the best part. There is also a scale so you can check the weight of your bowl since it's by the lb. You give the server the bowl and tell them the style and the spice level. They give you a number then cook your bowl and bring it to you after a short wait. Some things can have an extra burner to keep hot and some thing like the rose malatang just come out without that. Your server will ask. Bottomline it's a ton of fun to try this and creating the perfect bowl requires repeat attempt! I don't actually like mala. I don't find it spicy but I just never care for the taste that comes with the numbing. So for someone who hates mala it's still pretty tasty and the dinner was lots of fun. Mala Mayo Fried Rice The mala mayo fried rice was good. It was nicely cooked, with a little creaminess from the mayo. But at the end of the day, it was still just fried rice. Nothing particularly unique, though the flavor itself was solid. Mala Xiang Guo I built my bowl with noodles, dumplings, spam, cilantro, quail eggs, tofu, potatoes, and sausage. Most of it was great. The noodles were chewy, the dumplings juicy, and the potatoes worked well. The spam and sausage added a nice savory aftertaste, and the cilantro and quail eggs balanced it out. The only real miss was the tofu, which was bland and didn't absorb the sauce. Overall tasty, but I've had better mala elsewhere. Black Mala Xiang Guo Pretty plain and ordinary, without the depth or spice you'd expect. Even with the same ingredients as the regular mala, it felt off and disappointing. Overall, decent meal but not a must-visit for me. The ambiance was quiet but you can talk at a normal level which I liked.
