Made reservations ahead of time and came here for dinner with a group of 6. There's no dedicated parking, so everyone had to find street parking, but surprisingly it wasn't difficult at all. We all found spots within a short walk of the restaurant around 6pm. Service was great throughout the evening. The staff were friendly, attentive, and took the time to explain each dish as it was served, which made the experience feel a lot more approachable, especially with some of the more creative menu items. One thing I really appreciated was the Japanese inspiration throughout the menu. It was fun seeing familiar Japanese ingredients and techniques incorporated into the dishes, although I did feel that some of the flavor combinations were more successful than others. The presentation was beautiful across the board, and every course looked thoughtfully plated. My favorite dishes were definitely the chawanmushi, the scallop dish, and the corn ravioli. The chawanmushi was silky and comforting, the scallops were cooked really well, and the corn ravioli was probably the biggest surprise of the night with its rich, sweet, and savory flavors. The only dish that fell a little short for me was the fish entrée. Since it's the default main course, I was hoping it would be more memorable, especially considering you'd have to pay an additional premium to upgrade to the beef or choose a different option. It wasn't bad by any means, but it just didn't stand out compared to some of the earlier courses. Overall, I had a good dining experience and appreciated the creativity behind the menu. I'm a little on the fence about whether I'd actively recommend it, but I also don't regret trying it. I'd describe it as one of those places that's worth experiencing at least once, especially if you're interested in Japanese-inspired tasting menus.

My family and I had a wonderful experience at Sorrel. Not only was the food, delicious, creative, and fresh, but the service was outstanding. Megan and Roanin made our evening memorable. I highly recommend visiting Sorrel!

    Summer 2025 tasting menu

Another wonderful Michelin star experience in the books! They rotate tasting menus seasonally, and there are options to add additional dishes and beverage pairings. I went back in summer 2025 and I opted for their zero proof pairing. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I enjoyed it far more than their alcoholic menu. The drinks were a mix of refreshing drinks and sweet pairings that went well with each dish. Unfortunately I lost a lot of the photos with the zero proof drinks but I remembered a particular guava drink that was my favorite. In terms of food, we opted for the additional dry aged duck option and it was one of my favorites, but it was definitely a lot of food with the tasting menu. Also really liked the gnudi and the fried bread. Would definitely recommend trying them out for a special occasion!

Sorrel completely blew me away--truly a five-star experience from start to finish. Every single dish had me kicking my feet with excitement; the flavor combinations were so thoughtful, unique, and perfectly executed. You can tell an incredible amount of care goes into every detail, especially the plating--each course felt like a piece of art, right down to the beautiful, intentional choice of platter it was served on. One of my favorite parts was being able to see into the kitchen and watch the chefs in action. It added such a special, immersive element to the meal and made me appreciate the craftsmanship even more. You can feel the passion and precision behind everything that comes out of that kitchen. This was one of those dining experiences you keep thinking about long after it's over. Absolutely unforgettable.

Came on a Friday evening and it was probably a 1/3 full. Quiet, dark, intimate ambiance. Opted for the five course menu. - Half moon bay halibut: our least favorite course, too lean of a fish for my liking and felt tough to me - Sunchoke: fav course easily, perfectly crispy tempura, creamy and comforting but not too heavy - Honeynut squash: pasta was great, so savory for a veg based dish - Rock cod: uni and mussel on the side was a great touch, same for the mustard, dif combos brought out dif flavors in the cod - Semifreddo: felt familiar like an apple pie, was wary of the blue cheese but balanced it well The bread course before the pasta was fantastic. Loved the sourdough focaccia and the accompanying butters. Appreciate the variety as well. Also, before the semifreddo was a lychee pomegranate(?) mochi slush that was not too sweet and refreshing. Was surprised that I was able to finish all the courses and didn't feel sick at the end like I usually do with prix fixe menus. Didn't feel super heavy afterwards and glad to have found this spot. Looking forward to coming back and getting to try their supplementary courses as well.

Absolutely amazing service from the Sorrel team, especially our server Shek! Perfect setting for a date or dinner with friends/family. We came for the 5 course tasting menu (with additional dishes) and the regular beverage pairing (the alcoholic and NA options). The dishes we had: 1. Oysters (8/10). Everyone loved the oysters (I just don't like celery) 2. Blue fin tuna/strawberry/rhubarb/brokaw avocado (8/10). Refreshing and light dish, just needed a little more salt for me. 3. Artichoke/wild pea shoots/yogurt/cashew (10/10). I usually don't like artichoke, but it was amazing. 4. Sweet potato basque cheesecake topped with osetra caviar (10/10). I still think about this dish everyday. 5. Cappelletti/white asparagus/prosciutto/nettle (10/10). The prosciutto one was my favorite. 6. Sourdough focaccia (10/10). Came with 4 different flavors of butter. The whipped lard was my favorite. 7. Bay scallop/fava bean/Dungeness crab/fresh wasabi (10/10). The scallops melted in my mouth. 8. Chitarra (10/10). Noodles cooked to perfection, wish the portion was bigger! 9. Chawanmushi (10/10). The little bits of pork belly in there gave a great flavor profile 10. Black cod (10/10). My favorite dish of the entire night! The cod was soft, melted in my mouth, cooked to absolute perfection. 11. A5 wagyu (8/10). Good, but tasted like most A5 wagyu I've had before. 12. Dry aged duck (9/10). 13. Semi freddo (9/10).

Just okay. We did the 5 course menu and it was fine. The ingredients were high quality and the presentation was nice but the flavors didn't excite me. I would say it was a bit bland? The best dish was the scallop at the beginning. The salmon main was cooked perfectly but needed more ingredients in the dish because it was too much salmon. I didn't finish it. Service however was excellent and definitely up to standard for a Michelin starred restaurant.

Sorrel is a wonderful, delicious experience. Each component of this prix fixe menu is unique, tasty, and beautiful. The food is exceptional! The staff is welcoming and passionate about the food and the room is casual and relaxed. For the excellent level of culinary prowess at Sorrel, the price, while high, is reasonable. Sorrel really shows off California food and cuisine. Highly recommend!

    5 Course Tasting Menu

Birthday Dinner for the Hubby . Opted for the 5 course tasting menu $115 PP & tried 2 supplements. My favorites were the 2 supplements we ordered. The liberty dry aged duck and fennel was superb . We did the half order $65 which was more than enough for the both of us. The sunchoke basque cheesecake with kaluga caviar $38 was outstanding. Loved the savoriness & saltiness of the caviar. It paired super well together. I was so happy when they told me it was pasteurized caviar. Being pregnant I have so many food restrictions so this was perfect. These 2 dishes are a must try. I was blown away by the sourdough foccacia bread & butters & also the desserts were executed perfectly. The strawberry palette cleanser was so refreshing and i loved the acidity and savoriness of the fruits. The Thai tea , black sesame , salted cream & popcorn dessert were an explosion of flavors and i loved every bite. Service was excellent. I think the tasting menu was okay . My least favorite dish was cod & the marubini . Overall , we had a nice dinner. Overall rating would be a 3.5

Food was good but service could use more improvement. I'm left handed and while I normally wouldn't care if my utensils are placed on my right side, this is a Michelin star restaurant and I expected better attention to detail. I was annoyed throughout my dinner that no matter how many times I moved my utensils to my left side, in front of the servers, that the servers never realized I was left handed. I was also disappointed that I had to ask the servers to clean the table when there was sauce on the table. The food overall was delicious and I really enjoyed the meal. I just wish the service was on par with the food.

Had the pleasure of trying a short tasting and every bite from bread to pasta to main was gorgeous. You know it's a good sign when they start with good bread, and theirs was extraordinary. Generally less excited about ice creams for dessert but it was delish regardless. Wouldn't say any of the flavors were particularly exciting but well-executed. Service was on point as expected.

S'mores (with marshmallow, red miso caramel, and dark chocolate)
    Raymond N.

I originally had plans to have dinner at another restaurant but was told by a friend that plans changed and we were going to dine at Sorrel instead. I was very excited for the chance to try Sorrel, especially considering its Michelin star. Parking was a bit tricky with the shorter residential parking spots but I was able to find a spot a block away after only one round of circling. Upon entering the restaurant, I was instantly impressed with the ambiance, though it was a bit dark inside. I was seated immediately and was impressed with the night's menu: buckwheat gnudi (with sweet corn, shishito, and chanterelle), king salmon (with grilled cucumber, buttermilk, and brown butter broth), and s'mores (with marshmallow, red miso caramel, and dark chocolate). Bread was delivered to the table with three condiments; we weren't exactly sure what each of the three were but they were all good lol. The texture of the bread itself was great with a slight crunch outside and soft inside; I could eat it every day if I could. The buckwheat gnudi was very good but I was a bit sad that there were only two pieces in the small bowl. The king salmon was prepared very well, though I wished I had some sort of carb to eat with it. Next was a surprise dessert which tasted like a scoop of some sort of ice cream or gelato. This mystery dessert was very good and I could tell that this simple dessert had a lot of preparation and effort put into making it. Finally, the last dish was the s'mores, which seemed more like a deconstructed smores. This was very interesting, though I wish I had a larger portion. Overall, the food was exceptional, though a bit on the smaller side. It was a bit tricky to take pictures of my food because it was dark inside; the candles placed on the table helped a bit but can only do so much or lighting. The service was great, though there was a long gap in between the delivery of each course. Since each course was small, the delay made me hungrier before each course came. Regardless, I was very happy to finally try Sorrel and would definitely welcome the opportunity to dine there again.

    Ask the Community - Sorrel

    Is there a dress code?

No, but you may change your sneakers to "church shoes" and upgrade your cargo shorts to pants.

How cold/comfortable was it eating outside? We have a reservation for Dec. Did they ask for your Covid proof eating inside?

We went in October, so nights were warmer and brighter then, but there are ample heat lamps. Sorrel also offered us blankets if we did feel cold.…

How far in advance can you make a reservation?

Their calendar on their website shows a year in advance which may or may not be valid for actual usage. I think 2-3 months ahead of time is a good time frame though.

What's the noise level like? Can you hear the whole table if you come with a larger group, or is it a "lean close with your date" place?

The noise level is rather quiet and everyone is spaced further apart due to covid safety protocols. I wouldn't worry about having trouble with carrying a conversation at this restaurant.

    Is casual dress appropriate?

Yes, but it's a nice place, so dressing slightly up will make your evening that more special. Enjoy

Is it better to book a communal table reservation or a supper table reservation?

I prefer a supper table usually ... unless I am eating at lazy bear 😛

Is this place good for vegans?

They don't have a wide variety of dishes for vegans but they do have a few. My daughter is vegan and she loved what she had and said it was one of the best meals she's had. Let them know you're vegan and they will ensure you are not disappointed.

A bit more communication or accommodation would've been appreciated especially for a restaurant at this price point. that being said the standout crudo was the halibut aguachile. I think this was so fresh and the flavor combination is so unique with the sweetness of the stone fruit and the textures from the avocado and the hominy. the amberjack was also delicious too! it had a brightness from the citrus with the watermelon that stepped the dish up to the next level. the pastas were amazing! every pasta was cooked amazingly well and had an incredible bite you'd really only have with freshly made pasta. the orecchiette pesto was bright, not too oily and definitely surprised me as my favorite. the mafaldine cacio e pepe was a close second. the richness from the egg and spiciness of the fresh cracked black pepper was super, not to mention the pasta shape was so whimsical overall the food was spectacular. the dining experience leaves some to be desired. maybe not the best for large parties but for a date night or small party, this place could be a great choice

PLACE: the place is pretty small, but there is a good amount of tables and chairs to sit at, great date night spot and i love the vibe of how everything is layered as well FOOD: SOUR CREAM + ONION BURRATA W HOUSE OLIVE OIL CIABATTA - probably one of the best burrata i had paired with ciabatta ever HOT MESS SPAGHETTI + MEATBALLS - super good, al dente, and the meatballs were perfectly seasoned + cooked FUSILLI ALLA VODKA - i got this baked with pesto and four cheese, i usually don't like red sauce but everything made it super good. CHOCOLATE PANNA COTTA - love me some chocolate and the panna cotta was just exquisite in itself OVERALL: amazing place, been wanting to check it out and i'm glad i did

We had a wonderful experience as a party of 3; Amelia kindly greeted us at the door with menus, and…read morethe way it works is that you get a moment to decide on dishes while the hostess gets your table ready, and you order before walking through the beautiful naturally-lit, high-ceiling restaurant to sit. Amelia recommended one pasta dish per person in the party, to share family style (which ended up working well for us, since we also got three appetizers, and finished the meal with a small amount of yummy leftovers for tomorrow) so that's what we did, along with the starters... We got the "big juicy meatballs with tomato and pancetta," which were incredible; the bread was delicious and certainly is not just a side to the amazing (definitely juicy) herbed tender meatballs. I'd definitely get this again, along with the grilled zucchini with worm salt and mint, which was so flavorful and tasty. We also got the smokey romano beans with fire roasted tomato, which was also really good but just keep in mind the emphasis on the smokey flavor! It wasn't my cup of tea but that's for sure a personal thing. For pastas, I'd rank them in this order: 1. our favorite was today's lasagna du jour, which was mushroom! So delicious, with a crispy cheesy crust, soft tender interior, and an almost caramelized tomato sauce accompanying. 2. Reginette with pork sugo (meat sauce) and spicy turnip greens was next, which had wonderful flavor with the tomato-based sauce and pieces of pork but if you like it slightly softer texture it might not be for you (same with the fusilli; the go-to preparation is aldente!). 3. Fusilli alla vodka with tomato, calabrian chili, cream, basil, and added garlic butter shrimps; this one's sauce felt a little underwhelming and more watery than creamy, and I'm just now realizing that although the menu said four garlic butter shrimp (an extra $7), we only got three. I think I'd come back for the lasagna and/or to buy the pasta from their expansive stock, cook it a bit longer, and serve it covered in a decadent creamy sauce.

The pesto fazzoletti pasta was wonderful - the sauce wasn't too overpowering and the noodles were perfectly al dente. The beef cheek agnolottis were so fun and tender with a hearty sauce. But my goodness ... the porcini pizza was NOT it. When it originally came out, it smelled like I was in the Tenderloin and it was really hard to get over that. Once it cooled down, the smell tampered down but the taste was really "funky". We ate it, but the choices were: 1) eat terrible smelling pizza or 2) lukewarm and still not great tasting pizza. Sorry, but it wasn't a great end to our meal. :(

My boyfriend and I sat at the bar and our bartender was very attentive without being overbearing and very knowledgeable--he gave thorough, detailed descriptions and recommendations on the wine list and the food menu (beyond what I would've expected). He even replaced my water and apologized after realizing he poured it to the brim, which really wasn't an issue but I appreciated his correction anyway. We ordered the side of wood grilled corn to start, I ordered the malfadine al limone pasta and my boyfriend ordered the spaghetti pomodoro. The wood grilled corn had a nice char to it and we enjoyed the accompanying sauce and cheese on top; however, based on the menu description I was expecting a little more of a Calabrian chili flavor / kick. The pomodoro was good but nothing to write home about, and the malfadine was a bit of a surprise / the highlight! I enjoyed the curly pasta texture and loved the lightness of the sauce paired with the salt flavor and complexity of the salmon roe on top. We love a good dessert but nothing caught our eye on the menu this time, as we don't prefer the soft, creamy desserts like panna cotta (as opposed to something more tangible like a cannoli). Lastly, we also had the following glasses of wine: Verdecchio, Verdeca, Montepulciano, and the Carignan Blend. As someone that loves crisp white wines with high acidity and minerality, I loved the Verdecchio. The Verdeca was refreshing but too light and not fruit forward enough for my preference. We both liked the Carignan, as we like deeper berry flavors, and the Montepulciano was OK (didn't love but didn't dislike). Would definitely love to come back and try some of the other wine varieties and menu options!

I love the wood tables and the steps that lead you to a private room upstairs. The space is amazing and attendees loved it. They have a photo booth too. Staff are wonderful! Thank you, Naz and Ife! Amazing bartenders. They were so friendly, attentive, and personable. Many attendees said they came to the event particularly because they love Arcana. It's conveniently located near BART and multiple bus lines and some Lyft bike docks. I cannot recommend Arcana enough! It's great for date night, girls' night, corporate meetups, and more. It's welcoming and inclusive and the food and drinks are delicious and strong. Will be back!

Charging the $10 event fee on discretion before the posted event start time seems... shady? illegal? My two friends got in a few minutes before with no cover. I was dealing with a bike lock while they went in. We were not there for the event but rather as volunteers from the weekly cleanup refuse crew in the Mission. You get perks as a thank-you for doing your part in making the City a cleaner place. We had just had a lovely time at another participating business (Beehive) and planned on Arcana being our final stop. Thankfully I was able to use the restroom without a fee, with my gear held up outside by the security team. While waiting in the restroom line, I told a staff member about all this, and the worker seemingly went up to the front to find out what's going on. The line took a few minutes, my friends also bumped into me, and I told them I'd likely wait for them outside the business post-restroom while they finished their wine. Already reported to the Mayor's Office. Maybe I'll add BBB. Should be honest and equitable! Four out of 200+ reviews by me have been one star, so I rarely share negativity. It's all rather unfortunate as other visits here went off without an issue. I warned a group of four about all this while I waited out front, and after talking to the front door folks, they left and thanked me for the advice. Please be careful if you visit here. . . .
