i've loved beretta for years, but probably will not be back for a while. review written by my boyfriend: "I'm going to elaborate on my review. I do want to highlight that the food was amazing. It's just that the service was abysmal. First off, we were seated quite quickly. But it took us forever to have someone take our order. We didn't even know who our server was. Probably 10-15 mins before we got someone's attention. Our server was a short woman with a brunette bob. Thankfully, she was not the one serving us the food or else the entire meal would have taken even longer (some other staff members did that promptly). Our waitress just took our order and moved food off our table (which she was quite attentive about). My major gripe were three things. First, the beginning. Second, my partner needed a lemon for her risotto. I raised my hand. My partner sees that our server walks in from outside and completely ignores my raised hand. I feel like as a server, when you enter the restaurant again from somewhere else, your immediate attention should be on the tables that you're serving. But I'll let it slide since a raised hand could be quite hard to see. However, immediately after, she goes and starts chatting up with her coworkers. This time my partner tries to raise her hand (she's actually facing the whole restaurant whereas I'm facing the back wall). She got ignored as the waitress walked right behind me to the bathroom area. Only reason we got her attention was because my partner raised her voice and said excuse me. Lastly, the one that made me decide to leave a 10% tip (usually it's 20%+) was how long it took for us to get a check. Let me pose this question: If the customer is on their last entree, ask for it to be boxed, and declines dessert, what would be the most logical follow up? She walks away and I make a bet that we're not getting our check in 5 mins. Lo and behold, we did not. We decide to ask her, but 5 mins later and still no check. So we had to ask another waitress. I came here for lunch on a whim this past Sunday. The setting was overall casual and cozy, and I'm always a fan of Italian food. I ordered a carbonara that was very delicious, and the pasta had great texture I certainly would've loved to return for. Everything was pleasant throughout the meal - the server, a grey-haired, bearded gentleman, was polite, served us with water at the beginning, took our orders, and dropped off the food. Nothing out of the ordinary, but nothing bad either. Untiiiiilllllll.....it was time to pay. The bill already had a 5% mandate for employee benefits, and I was handed a card payment machine with tip suggestions starting at 18%. The server then leaned closer to me, to watch what I'd choose to tip. That immediately put me off completely, and I chose a less generous amount. He then had the nerve to ask if there was a problem. I'm not confrontational, so I said no. But sir, if you're reading this, that was the problem. Look, I get it. I'm from Canada where there's also a tipping culture, and being handed a card reader at a restaurant has been the norm for over a decade there. But the servers have always had the decency to step aside momentarily, or turn around when you pay to give you privacy. Stopped by here on a weekday to have dinner with a small group, the place was not too packed on a Monday, and we got seated quickly. The waiter was kind and asked if we wanted to start with drinks, and of course we did. I ended up with a Cognac Old Fashioned, which I always found good, and it was not bad here with Hine Cognac. We ordered the Fungi Pizza and Linguini alle Vongole, both came out surprisingly quickly and extremely hot, my mistake for jumping in so quickly on the pizza. Both were quite delicious and pretty filling; the pasta was flavorful, and was just the right amount for 3 people to share with the pizza. Overall, it was a great place to grab a bite to eat. Unfortunately I am still not a fan of the food here, and our service was once again very slow. Fortunately we weren't in any sort of hurry, but it's hard to explain how slow and mediocre the service was throughout our entire dinner. For food, I found the apps to be much better than the mains. We ordered: -meatballs - my favorite dish of the night -broccolini - pretty good, cooked nicely and good flavor -crab arancini - pretty unique and overall good -lasagna ferrarese - unlike any lasagna I've had before, but the flavor wasn't my favorite -spicy sopresata pizza - mediocre pizza, probably the best of the main dishes -risotto alla zucca - so so so bad. Almost inedible. The rosemary or something completely hijacked the flavor and we all thought it tasted like cleaning spray. We order focaccia, caponatina (roasted veggie salad with herbs) for appetizers, salmon for main dish and fritto misto (fried mixed seafood). The fritto misto was done correctly like the ones I had in Italy. The salmon was cooked right but the sauce was heavy in butter and complicated herby flavor and kinda ruined the perfectly cooked fish. The caponatina was cold which should've been warm or at least room temperature. Since they were getting ready to close down and we were the last guests in the restaurant the service was a bit underwhelming. If you're looking for a place out to grab a couple bites and drinks, Beretta is a nice spot. Tucked away in the Mission and somewhat far from the rest of the city, it's surprisingly packed so you'll want to make a reservation in advance. For appetizers, I would recommend getting the walnut burrata. Topped with honey and figs, it's a perfect snack that will leave you craving more. The crab arancini sounded delicious as well, however in reality was underwhelming - with no cheeses or other sauces, it's quite flavorless and a bit stale. For the mains, I was surprised by how few pasta selections there were. With only a couple dishes, the focus of this restaurant is clearly its pizzas. The risottos are not bad, however some of the pasta options, such as the agnolotti, didn't have much flavor beyond just being salty. As a whole, if you're looking for a spot to grab drinks and get a pizza, Beretta is not a bad option. However if you're looking for more flavorful and satisfying Italian food, I would recommend finding a spot in North Beach. read more

We had to check out the (slightly) new updated menu from Beretta, and it was a hit! We came in at 8 pm on a Monday, and the restaurant was still decently buzzing (who says SF is dead??)). For apps, we ordered the Antipastini plate (appetizer board with dips/sides and focaccia) with the Cannellini Bean Hummus, Zucchini, and the Ricotta. We also ordered the Walnut Bread. For mains, we shared the Cacio y Pepe and Mushroom Risotto. And for dessert, we had to get the Tiramisu! Everything was absolutely delicious. No flops on the antipastini board - the zucchini was the hit, as it was so salty and fried. The ricotta was insanely creamy and gentle, a good contrast. The hummus was very creamy and the thyme flavor was strong. We looooved the burrata and walnut bread, a perfect bite w creamy ricotta and truffle honey to make it rich without going overboard. As for mains, the Mushroom Risotto was some of the best risotto I've had - creamy, strong mushroom flavor, well salted, al dente. The Cacio y Pepe was good, but a lil dry (maybe expected for Cacio y pep generally). We got calabrese peppers on the side to pep it up. Margherita pizza hit the spot and went great with the in-house calabrian spicy oil, one of the best I've had anywhere, it packed an amazing punch. The winter salad was a let down, at $22 we were expecting a large bowl of plentiful greens but it came out rather small and sad. It tasted great but shouldn't be priced more than the other salads at $13- 15. The carbonara pasta was a decadent delight, very rich, full of flavor, presented nicely. We had the bread and calamari for starters- both were delicious! I do wish the bread had olive oil and balsamic on the side to dip. We ordered the Italian sausage pizza, prosciutto pizza, Caesar salad, and fried cauliflower, which was a perfect amount of food for 4 ppl. The pizza here is absolutely delicious!! The dough is so thin and chewy, and the flavors are so good. The bucatini was also perfectly cooked and the sauce was perfectly integrated into the pasta. This was one of my favorite go to spots in SF. Love this place! The Valencia location was my favorite personally. It is always busy and packed of people every time I come here, but good vibes all around! Once you get a seat, you are greeted by some of the most coolest people! I usually start off with their broccolini as it has that great crispy and crunch all at once and go pair it with their carpaccio di manzo. I would also get their burrta bruchetta, which is packed full of flavors and simply a must get! Not sure if they have it anymore, but man that was so good! While their pizzas great such as a the funghi misti, margherita burrata, and carbonara (which are my top 3 favorites), I was in love with their squid ink risotto! That was what they were known for. My friends and I would leave with black teeth and tongue. But we didn't care. But that squid ink risotto is such a delight and so striking with its deep black color. WOW this is my new favorite Italian restaurant ever, I came here twice in one week!! Everything we ordered was sooo delicious, the Margherita Burrata pizza is a must-try! I would come back just for that pizza because the red sauce and burrata really stood out and the crust is just perfect - not soggy or oily at all, crisp yet chewy and holds up really well. Make sure to ask for the chili oil and chili flakes to elevate it even more! The pastas are also just as tasty! I've gotten the Pappardelle and Lasagna Bolognese, they're so rich and flavorful I couldn't get enough. The tricolore salad was refreshing, not sure I would get it again but I'd want to try their other salads and appetizers! Highly recommend coming here because not only is the food amazing, but it's also not too busy and with plenty of seating (there's a communal table too). And THEN, the server double charged our credit card. We have reached out to the restaurant at least four times. They refuse to get back to us apparently. So I guess we will leave it up to the fraud dept of the credit card company even though I don't think it was intentional fraud. But not returning calls and ignoring the problem reflects badly on them. We will not return. Disappointing as this was a favorite. read more

We're those people - ever since having a baby, we're the family walking in right at 5:03 on the dot. As someone who worked in the service industry for years, I know how annoying that can be: staff still settling in for a long shift, and here comes the overly happy family ready for drinks and dinner. The food is always delicious, and the staff is consistently warm and accommodating -- especially Stephanie, who has been wonderful every single time. She always does me the favor of checking with the kitchen about my slightly annoying special requests "just this once" -- even though we both know I'll probably ask again next time. More recently, we also had the pleasure of meeting Colin, who was equally kind and welcoming to our blabbering baby boy. We know not everyone is as charmed by a mini food-thrower as we are, but the staff here always makes us feel completely comfortable and genuinely welcome. All in all, Beretta has become our go-to spot for celebrations, casual dinners, or just those moments when we desperately need to sit outside with our favorite drink -- the Diablo -- and relax for a bit. read more

While I've always found Beretta to be a reliable dinner option, tonight if overperformed. The ratio of cheese to lettuces in the Tricolore was much appreciated and the Cauliflower appetizer was exceptional (p.s. please add it to DoorDash!). The romesco on the latter was a perfect complement to the cauliflower, with just the right amount of heat. I mixed the two dishes together and the synergy made them all the better. The ingredients were clearly fresh, a very satisfying meal. Furthermore, the service was warm and quick (though we only ordered starters) and the space was a nice mix of swanky and low-key, albeit a little dark for our preferences. My only tweaks would be having a smaller ratio of endive to arugula and radicchio (the endive is too crunchy and not chopped finely enough so it interferes with the eating flow) and more romesco for the amount of cauliflower such that each stalk could be coated. Despite it being an appetizer, the portion of cauliflower could stand to be a bit larger. Regardless, Beretta is a definite repeater and a standout in the field of midscale Cal-Ital joints in SF. read more
