Writing an amended review for everyone's safety. This business responded and tried to tell me in very blatant terms that I was unqualified to share my experience the way I did. The reason why everything I said was CORRECT is because I worked with two different certified Olympic coaches who also competed and placed nationally. Getting a bunch of certifications doesn't guarantee that anyone actually understands how the body moves and what types of injuries will cause which limitations or which muscles will compensate for what weaknesses or imbalances. Juan should have also been able to tell immediately that I have hypermobility and that it will affect some of my lifts based on how I was performing, but sadly he had no idea. Have seen multiple lifters on their Instagram with poor form and having to use PL belts to pull very little to average weight. Of course we do not know if they have prior injuries but I have a feeling these things were maybe not discussed in depth... As someone who has lifted with true professionals in the past, and has a lot of connections to sports and movement specialists in the OC area, I would not recommend this place if you have pre-existing injuries and are looking for coaching on basic OR advanced lifts. EDIT since they wanna be petty: You can also tell the level of in professionalism in Juan's responses--referring to me as an "elitist" when my only complaint was people getting injured, and the fact that I saw PROOF that people were injured lmao, and also the fake prying for more "clarification" is so cringe. Please go find another gym that knows what they're doing and can take feedback in kind. Update as of 7/22/2021: Right after the owner saw my honest review, a burner account decided to creep on my personal social media and bully me in my message requests, I started getting creeps on my Insta stories, and I also got a creepy Yelp message. I will be looking into pursuing legal action. Don't let this happen to you, and just avoid this place. They could be taking the time to better themselves but instead they're bullying a 20-something Asian girl online, as a full fledged business. How embarrassing. Update as of 7/23/2021: The people at this "business" are continuing to creep on my personal social media and are flooding their Yelp page with reviews by their friends and "partners" (READ: they get free membership while you pay them $200/month). If your coach pushes you to injury and then dismisses you when you bring up that injury, they are not a good coach, period. Coaches need to be able to take feedback because the end goal is YOU, the client, NOT Juan's ego. You're not paying for his ego to be stroked, you're paying for professional guidance to reach your goals. Remember that. read more

My fitness journey has had it ups and downs, and I have been doing crossfit for about 4 years. At the beginning of this year, I was in looking to recover from a down phase - in winter of 2020 I suffered a miscarriage and had some serious depression. I had been a part of another crossfit gym, but my needs had changed. Sorta is super close to my home and their social media presence had my curiosity so I applied. When I started, the vibe at Sorta surprised me - in a good way - I hadn't been to a fitness facility that was so chill and so culturally fitting to me. I am latina so that feeling of family is important to me annnnnd I L-O-V-E hearing good music that makes you want to dance when you train (that may be weird to some, but that is life to me). Sorta has both AND no one thinks that is weird including Juan (shit, I think he puts the jams on purpose because he knows it pushes us). The members at Sorta are diverse, but it is really cool to see my latina lifters - especially a solid mix of ones that are new and ones that are experienced. Coming off a rough end of 2020, these factors were healing to me and I haven't even gotten to the programming and coaches. I knew about Juan prior to Sorta from his previous experience directing programming at another well recognized and respected training facility. So, I was excited to get to learn from an expert in exercise science, and I am still very surprised on how much information is taught every week. - breathing exercise - nutrition - powerlifting - crossfit and more stuff that I am learning to understand. What is even more awesome is the modifications the coaches can make if you have injuries. I am genetically pre-disposed to clotting and I have a chronic heel/ankle injury. Any workout - I have still been able to participate safely AND Juan is always watching. When I tried to do more, he has stopped me and modified my movements for my safety. The folks at Sorta know what they are doing and look to help educate others in their fitness journey. There is variety of skill levels at each class which means the programming is modified to meet each member at their current skill level. The written workouts provide direction, but the coaches ensure to tailor it so the members are challenged appropriately. Lastly, we need to talk about community. How cool to have a place that is helping others and ACTIVELY works to be involved in the community. Sorta has worked to support local business, done clothing drives AND provide mentorship to the youth. Needless to say, today, I am in a much healthier, happier place and Sorta has helped me recover physically and mentally. I joined Sorta because it was the only gym in the South Bay that adhered to COVID safety guidelines but I stayed for the community, camaraderie, and excellent training I've received the past year. My strength and form has dramatically improved and continues to. The classes/training are very structured with each building on the previous to ensure you learn how to properly lift. But more than that, they're seriously fun and addicting! The other members are lovely and we really push one another to do our best. The trainers are very helpful in teaching technique and assisting with mobility work to prevent injury. If you're unsure or unable to do something, Mick or Juan will show you modified versions of that workout. I can't stress enough how much of a supportive, strong community the owner Juan has built--between helping small businesses that struggled during the pandemic (like my family's bakery Le Pain Du Jour :)), charity drives, women-only powerlifting meets, etc, it really has been such an essential support system during these crazy times. I wasn't much into working out before starting at Sorta gym but once I began my classes I soon realized that it wasn't like any other gym. Everyone is so friendly and you feel noticed/accepted.
