Andrew & Kevin are the best! Kevin was very honest and open about the issues with my car and noticed something that 2 mechanics had not picked up on recently. They quickly identified that I had a power steering fluid leak due to the belt coming in contact with the hose and replaced the hose for a very affordable price. The other mechanics are friendly and take great care of your car. They told me about future maintenance my car would need and did not try to upsell me or treat me differently than they would a male customer, as auto shops sometimes do. The only star I take off is because it was very hard to get into the shop's lot and had to park next door in the small shopping center & there are a lot of tents outside of the entrance. Bringing my review down from a 5 to a 4. Andrew appears to be the only mechanic who works at the shop now, previously there were 2 other guys who were mechanics there. While Andrew is knowledgeable and friendly, I've been told by him just call the morning of for a service and he'll fit me in the schedule, however the past two times I've done this he has said he's too busy which is the opposite of what I've been told. I asked him today to schedule me down by name a week in advance he said he would but we'll see if he remembers next time I call/come in for the appointment. I get that days get busy but they should recommend appointments in advance if that's the case instead of just saying call morning of. Just my tip. read more

I decided to be a responsible human being today and bring my car in for its long overdue 90,000 + 100,000 mile maintenance. Mr. Shew deservedly chastised me on my tardy decision, but well... I had to wait until I had money to pay for the maintenance. Another different mechanic said I had to have my timing belt replaced, which he quoted with a cost $700 for parts and labor. When I called to verify this service with Mr. Shew, he said my car didn't have a timing belt, but a timing chain, which did not need to be replaced on a 2007 civic. Googling this verified his claim. So he saved me $700 on service I didn't need! Five hours later, I ended up having to replace my AC Cabin Filter, Transmission Fluid, Brake pads, and 4 spark plugs. Parts and labor ended up costing about $500. Pro Tip... offer to pay in cash and they may lower your final cost, but get a price quote before you leave! MR SHEW FOREVER. read more

I have a 2007 Acura TSX and decided to give this place a try when I realized I needed to replace my rotors and get an oil & filter change. I called on a Friday before I was going to bring my car in on Saturday. I explained what the issue was and Mr. Shu told me that yeah it was my rotors, but to bring my car in Monday/Tuesday because he had to order the rotors, and if i dropped my car off in the morning then he'd have it done by noon. I think there was some confusion when I got there this morning, b/c the first guy that came to talk to me was one of the mechanics, and he basically told me that b/c I was at 69K miles, I needed the big service for the transmission and all that, which would cost $300 on top of the cost for the rotors (which he estimated to be $200-$300). I already spent a LOT for the last service at the dealer so I really just needed my rotors fixed. I explained to Mr. Shu that I had already done the big B12 service at the dealer after I hit 60K miles, and I had changed my brake pads then. The service light that had come on was just an A1 oil & filter change. So said that would just cost $30. In the end, everything was fine. They finished my car at noon, and the price ended up being what Mr. Shu had originally estimated for me, which was definitely reasonable. If I need anything taken care of for my car in the future, I do plan on bringing it back here! read more

I've been a client of S and S Auto for almost 30 years. I loved Mr. Shew! However, recently, I brought my daughter's 2010 Honda over to the shop, looking to speak with Stanley (Mr. Shew's nephew who had inherited the place). I was greeted by Kevin, the owner of the next door Mercedes Benz shop, who told me that he had bought the place and merged the two companies.. Told Kevin that something was causing the car's battery to drain. Towards the end of the day, Kevin diagnosed the problem, saying it was a faulty air conditioner compressor; the estimate to fix (replace the compressor)...$1100... I told him I needed to get a second opinion. Kevin understood; he had disconnected the compressor so we could drive the car...great. HOWEVER, when I brought the car to my other favorite mechanic, John Piechowski, his first response was "sounds like the relay....". Sure enough, all John needed to do was replace the "relay" ($19) and we were good to go. The bill, which included an oil change...$100!. A savings of $1000! I've never been subject to a crooked mechanic...and NOW I never will. Go elsewhere. read more

I got there early (a little before 8 a.m.) because I've heard how popular this shop is and wanted to make sure my car got checked out that same day. I'm not sure why they don't take appointments, but I didn't want to end up like the reviewer who was told "Sure come in!" only to get a long wait because the lot was already full. Anyways, even though I was there before they were even actually open, Mr. Shaw checked out my car immediately (My "Check Engine" light was on). The only awkward thing about that was that I couldn't find anywhere to sit, so I wasn't quite sure what to do with myself, but I didn't want to just leave either without him telling me what was wrong with my car, what he was planning to do, and how long it might take. It turns out I was just overdue for an oil change. Phew! I honestly thought it was going to be something more serious because when I went to my dealership (Honda Miller) for a recall on my airbag, they gave me an estimate of $2,900 worth of other repairs "suggested" for my car. I passed because the status for each extra repair was "Caution," not "Urgent." Anyways, S & S only charged me $28 for an oil change! No wonder they're the highest rated on Yelp while Honda Miller is rated one of the worst! My only concern with S & S is if they aren't catching other problems my dealership did because they're so popular and busy and don't have as much time to look as deeply into things as they ought to, or if my dealership really was just finding extra stuff to charge me with. I'm thinking it's a little bit of both, but between the two shops, I definitely feel better about going to S & S for future repairs and maintence instead! read more

There is not much more that I can say that hash't already been addressed in previous reviews - maybe that I read them. I relied on them. They were spot on. I have an Acura. I needed an oil change and tire rotation. I got it. Whole affair took about 30 minutes. $45.00. Perfect! And that pat about Mr Shew offering refreshments? Very true. And with a bow no less. Based on my experience doing business in Asia, I'd say Mr Shew is trying to incorporate amenities into his service routine that would de rigeur there. I suspect he would enjoy chatting with each of his customers for 5-10 minutes prior to beginning work on their cars - but we're all in such a rush aren't we? A word to the wise: if you're not driving and Acura or a Honda you might want to call in advance. He seems to stick with his specialty. But there are two adjacent businesses that work on Mercedes and on everything. read more

When I first started going to him he would drop me off and pick me up at the Beverley Center for a couple hours while my car was being work on. Later, he let me borrow his car. May he rest in peace. I have been taking my Civic to Mr. Shew for the last three years. In terms of service, he and his workers have always gone above and beyond. He lets you know way in advance when your car is due for major service, how long certain parts will last, etc. I went in today for an oil change and he gave me notice that my timing belt would need to be replaced soon. It's either 8 years or 85,000 miles, and my car is 8 years old. I like the way he explained it, telling me the price as if he was just giving me a head's up so I could plan ahead and figure out my finances before I bring it in again. I also appreciate the S & S crew's help with little things over the years. Once I got a fix ticket for not having my front license plate attached (long story) and they drilled the holes and attached it for me free of charge. When the time came for me to replace my windshield wipers, I brought the new wipers to the shop and asked if they could show me how to do it and again they did it free of charge. Even if I come in in the middle of the afternoon (like today) and ask for an oil change, Mr. Shew does it on the spot and cleans the windows, too! I only wish that Mr. Shew worked on more than Hondas and Acuras so all my friends and their various cars could experience his great service. read more

Yelp success story #58: Finding S & S Auto Repair I had been holding off on getting my oil change since I bought my Honda over four months ago. Partly because I knew it could go more than the requisite 3,000 miles between changing, but more so that I just couldn't find a place to get my oil changed that I didn't feel had a scam factor to it. Like everyone else I receive those EZ Lube coupons in the mail every couple of weeks touting their $19.99 special, and it seemed like an easy enough choice since I pass a location everyday, but I had also watched as twice NBC4 had done an undercover sting to catch these jokers scamming customers and I just wasn't cool with that even for a simple oil change. Enter S&S. So searching our #1 site, I found S & S was in my zip, works only on Hondas, is a small operation and had excellent reviews. Score. Mr. Shew was so accommodating yesterday when I stopped in and he was completely full. He pulled out one of the other cars and immediately started work on my Accord. He told me to help myself to coffee or any soda in the fridge, which I did, as talked motos with the guy while he was changing my oil. This tiny hole in the strip mall auto repair shop came recommended via Car Talk's website, and over the last couple of years I think it's been a pretty good find for me and my ancient Nipponese ride. Tucked into the back corner of one of those somewhat dingy automotive strip malls often found here in LA, the S&S shop consists of Mr. Shiu and his droll mechanic. Together they've kept my ancient Honda rolling through a few little age inflicted glitches/milestones without breaking the ole bank. In fact, a recent clutch repair was significantly less than what I was quoted at one of the West LA's more popular repair shops, and the same held true for a timing belt change-out. What's more is the feeling that Mr. Shiu and crew are only going to tell you what really needs to be fixed, and will do their best to keep you rolling without all the mechanical "frills" you might encounter at a dealership. So, if you're in the neighborhood and have an old Honda or Acura you need to nurse along, try S&S. They're friendly, comparatively inexpensive, do solid work, and will likely insist that you take a cold soda from the well stocked garage fridge. read more

Thank you Yelp! This was my first time going to a place based on the site's reviews and you didn't let me down! Mr. Shew and his right-hand man were great. I took my '03 Civic in to check out a grinding noise, Mr. Shew cruised the neighboring streets with me to give it a listen, then jacked the car up and diagnosed a worn out brake pad. He showed me the replacement part and explained exactly where and why the noise was coming from (educational!) and told me he'd have the car ready for me in an hour. Then something strange happened: He asked me if I had a ride back. I said "no but it's no big deal since my house is just 5 blocks away"... then he said "Well here, take my car in the meantime".... !!! I just met the guy so I couldn't tell if he was serious or not, but I declined since I was planning on walking around the nearby mini-mall anyway. Still... what a nice guy! He showed me very clearly what the issue with my '99 Acura 2.3CL was (it was a broken oxygen sensor) and provided quick and affordable service. Very nice gentleman, and his mechanic was also friendly. It's a breath of fresh air to deal with a repair shop with this kind of integrity. So I just moved to the LA area and I'm driving down a street somewhere in West LA when suddenly the gas pedal doesn't make my car "go" anymore. I pull over, park the car, try to start it a few times to no avail, then call a friend for a ride back to my apartment in the valley. I get home, get on google, search for a honda repair shop in west LA and find George N's review of S & S Auto. Next day, I call S & S and the guy tells me he'll check my car out as soon as I can tow it there, he also reccomended a towing company that charged me almost nothing for the tow. A couple hours later my car and I are dropped off at S & S. The first diagnosis is that the battery is dead. We give it a jump and no go. In a mixed-blessing sort of way I was happy that I didn't just get my car towed for something jumper cables could have solved. The second diagnosis is that the ignition is dead. He says it'll be fixed in a couple hours. I take off back to the valley and get a ride back down a couple hours later to find my car waiting for me, running fine. No tricks when I showed up, he charged me less for the parts than I could find on the internet, and yes, I even got a cold soda from the garage fridge. I have an old 1999 Honda Civic that I'm pretty sure is down to it's last leg but Mr. Shew and everyone at the shop always manages to make it feel brand new. I recommend coming early in the morning, as soon as they open would be best. I usually come around 8 am to get my oil changed and they're finished within 15-20 minutes. Mr. Shew is friendly and is always honest, patient, and is straight forward when it comes to telling me what needs to be done with my car. Just went to this guy for the first time for a major timing belt repair. Prices were pretty good considering that the location is pretty convenient. I could have gotten better prices but I would have had to leave LA proper. So I think this guy is well priced and honest. I also needed a muffler repair and he said he could do it for me but it would be expensive because he doesn't often do muffler work often. He told me to go to a muffler place and it would be way cheaper. So, I think he is honest and I plan on using him again. read more

Wow... Err... I have never had a service in this place and never will. They might be awesome if they do something they know how to do, but I'll never know because... I just called to get a quote to get the fuel/gas filters on my 2007 Honda Civic GX changed, and the response was that my car didn't have any. Even after I explained to him that it does, in fact, have two of them, a low pressure and high pressure one, even explaining where they were on the car, he replied (to paraphrase), "No, your car doesn't have any fuel filters. I've never heard of that." Hmm... I will go elsewhere, and you should to, especially if you drive a Civic GX. read more

Trying to save on costs, now that gas prices are up, I decided to check on Yelp for a recommended Auto repair that handles Honda's, instead of driving to the pricey service department at my dealership 17 awesome reviews took all hesitation away, and I took my car in today at about 14:30. Mr. Shew offered me a soda (:-)), complimented my car (which made me wear my big stupid smile...) and told me it should take a couple of hours, being a minor service and all. At 15:15 I decided to swing by and see how my car's doing. The car was ready for me. 67 dollars shorter and 5 minutes later I was out. This was a great experience, Quick, affordable and so pleasant! For the first several years I brought my car to a certain Acura dealership on the westside but got fed up with them after feeling ripped off more than once. So I looked on Yelp and found this place. When I first pulled up to the S & S shop, I was a little scared because it was in a random strip mall (after having gotten used to the showcase of dealerships). However, Mr. Shaw and the service he provides is great. The best part about the experience is that they are honest about what you do or do not need and will not try to rip you off with unnecessary things. They will also explain any work that needs to be done. There is also a coffee bean within walking distance if you don't have a ride or don't want to hang out at the shop while waiting. As someone else mentioned, the negative would be the inability to make an appointment. If you want work done, it's first come first serve at 8 am on weekdays. read more

Yes, Mr. Shew (sp?) offers you a can of soda. No, he is not courteous. After spending thousands of dollars at S&S over the last three years or so, he has no idea who I am. That would be fine, if the service was consistent. I suspect the main reason anyone would go here is price. You can call for a quote for the same service five times and, if you are able to transcend the communications barrier all five times, I would be surprised if you got the same answer twice. A non-Santa Monica Acura dealership would charge slightly more, but the service is usually top-notch and most importantly done with technology from this century. The camel's back broke today when I was a bit late for an appointment and he did not hold the appointment or even call. When I asked why, followed by a blank stare and shoulder shrug, he finally said "another customer came in." I am the dumb one for being surprised though, since I have called to swing by and showed up ten minutes later just to hear "we want to close now." Is unpredictable service with antiquated machinery on your car, a contraption that you entrust your life with, really worth it just to save a few bucks? read more

Everything on Yelp was exactly right. He is a very nice guy. I got there at 8am and he told me it would be 45 minutes before he could get to my car for an oil change. (he had a car up for some brake work) He was exactly right. I was up at 8:45; one of his employees got to me and I was done and out by 9:15. The oil change cost $35. They have a few chairs and coffee/water for you while you wait. I was right next to my car as I like watching what people are doing when they work on my car. They checked the tires and most of the fluids (coolant, wiper, etc). And as I asked questions about my Accord, they weren't rude or dismissive. Very helpful. And they weren't poking around looking for other problems. Definitely going back in 3 months....or 3,000 miles. I was about to go to Kragen parts to get my brake light and wipers fixed and found out that he had some of the parts. So he took care of it (he charged me for the parts - comparable to online prices I found) and he let me hover over him while he replaced the parts. Great experience. read more

I brought my 2006 Acura TL here for my brakes and rotors to be repairs, they were quick, they tested my battery because I was having problems with starting my car, they told me it was weak and re-charged it. I only give it a 4 stars because I ended up taking it to the Acura dealership to replace the battery and found out something was draining my battery, so had to spend 135 to have them disconnect something that was draining the battery, so a lil disappointed the shop didn't catch it, even when I asked if something could be draining a 8 month old battery life to cause it to go weak.....but I do plan on taking my car here for everything... read more

When I was shopping around for used cars, he took a look at quite a few prospective Hondas and Acuras before I settled on my car. If you don't need a repair, he'll be very candid and tell you as much. The only catch is that if you're not driving a Honda or Acura, there's not much he can do for you--that's his area of expertise. But for now, he's kept my old Civic up and running, and I have no complaints! read more

I called Mr. Shew in the morning to tell him that there is something wrong with my car battery and that it might need to be replaced. I showed up 30 minutes later and he takes my car in right away, after he offers me a nice cool drink from his infamous refrigerator of course. I left to take a phone call and 30 minutes later I come back and my car was sitting in the lot. I asked Mr. Shew if everything was okay and he told me that I needed a new battery and he replaced it already and I'm good to go. It was $115 for the battery and $10 for installation. I'm sure I could've gotten it done for cheaper, but I was very happy about the service and how quick and easy it was. Mr. Shew was also very friendly. I will definitely be coming back! **Update** 8/23/08 So I show up at 8am, and my oil change is done in less than 15 minutes! Super friendly guy, and even told me that I didn't need my O2 sensor changed when someone else suggested that I needed it changed. He's all about good service and saving you money =) Only wish they also worked on Toyota's! ***** Very friendly and willing to get you in and out asap! Only $15 for labor on oil change if you bring your own oil/filter. Since I moved down here, I don't have a garage and the price is well worth the convenience. I like to think I'm a good judge of character, and Mr. Shew just comes across as one genuine and sincere man. Looks like I found an honest and reliable mechanic. =) read more
