Ramen expert here... but this place is not mainly a ramen restaurant because they serve udon! Now that I think about it, there are very few places that serve udon as centerpiece dishes. Sure, some restaurants might offer it among billions of other items on the menu but here, the main noodle bowls also include udon noodles. I have had udon in Japan and California. And believe it not, udon bowls can get pretty creative. That's why SoSoBa didn't disappoint in the creative category. I had the Mic Drop which was a nice combo of everything. The flavor was strong. The noodles were great, and the toppings were plenty. The bowl... for the price point, was a little small. I guess I can say it was California prices! I was hoping for bigger bowls but with all of the toppings, it's a toss up depending on hungry you are. I ate two bowls. Hahaha. Overall, I say try it out because of the unique build of their noodle bowls with the toppings and the flavor. I can say that I REALLY enjoyed the cocktails and service and would absolutely come back for their amazing happy hour deals. It was essentially half off certain ramens and drinks until 6pm. Not sure what time it starts. Honestly the food was so-so but my expectations for ramen are really high so I'm willing to overlook it. If you can sit at the bar, have Christian or Chris help you out for the night. They make amazing cocktails and I loved how ginger was incorporated in so many of them. None of the employees said anything so we sat down at one of the empty, yet dirty tables. Someone came over and kind of cleaned it off. Then we sat for 10 minutes and waited to have our drink order taken. Finally someone came with water and we quickly put in the app order in and asked for some drinks. I've been here a few times, always forgetting to do a review. This time I remembered. In the past we've come early afternoon and the service was ok. The food is always tasty. But today we came around 5p, while the food was delicious, the service was just bad. I think they were overwhelmed. In particular we ordered the Bao Buns with no lettuce when it finally arrived, it had lettuce. This was after we confirmed that the waitress heard us. When we told the server how we ordered it. Short Review: Decent food, good service, a little expensive, and limited parking spots. For a couple of friends just wanting to hang out with yummy food to eat and drink, it's perfect for it. But for family plus kids, I don't recommend going here. Of course, I am speaking of dining-in. If you are getting take-out, then it doesn't matter. For more details, read below. Long Review: Sosoba is located in the center of Phoenix, Arizona. Getting here can get tricky a little. For one thing, there are hardly parking spots. To get a parking spots, you'd have to use the meter on the side of parallel parking or hopefully find space somewhere that is allowed and walk that distance to Sosoba. Otherwise, on the outside, you can see the lime-green arch rooftop of Sosoba and full glass entry way. Their shop title is written on the window. On the inside, the shop is small, but enough to cover around 20 - 30 people. Their furnished of the shop was different from most restaurant. For instance, the walls are light creamy avocado color and if you seat at the bar, you could see different types of decals on top of the kitchen. I took the bar seat. As for the menu, you must download a QR code app or look them up on the website to take order because they won't hand you any menu due to COVID-19 safety procedure. Every restaurant does safety procedure differently. Anyway, after a couple of minutes, I decided to go with their Bao Bun (Pork Belly Version) and their TanTanMen. It took about 5 - 7 minutes for the Bao Bun and 2 - 3 minutes after for the TanTanMen. Bao Bun (Pork Belly Version): One of the few good bun bao that I have tried. The seasoning was on dot and garnish looks full to eat. Pork bellies were slightly crispy with a nice charred to it. The mayo and eel sauce was enough for the taste and wasn't overbearing. But the fun part is the bun. The buns are nicely fried with a slight crunch, but still soft enough to melt in your mouth. My only complaint was that it was somewhat expensive for what it is. For $15, I'm essentially paying $5 for each buns. Another part was they didn't allow me to choose different types of meat on my bun for each buns. This makes it not really worth paying $15 unless money isn't a problem to you. So, my problem isn't really the food, it's more of the pricing. But for the experience, it's okay, I suppose. TanTanMen: This dish is an inspired Chinese noodle dish of Dan Dan Noodles. And the Japanese took part of the recipe and made their own, which ended up as Tan Tan Ramen. The inspiration of TanTanMen is that instead of dry noodles, it is with broth instead. Dan Dan noodles are known for their Sichuan spice and their ground pork and green onions. In this case, I do get their very spicy chile with ground pork and green onions, but also their soft-boiled egg, menma (bamboo shoots), bok choy, and little of sesame seeds. For a person who has tried many different ramen, especially traditional ones, I must say, their TanTanMen is treat worthy to eat. The broth was nicely seasoned of tonkotsu, but is kind of overpowered by the spice of the technique of dan dan, which isn't terrible, but I tasted less tonkotsu. The noodles was slightly on the softer side, but it was also a little thicker than your typical standard straight ramen noodles. The soft-boiled egg is perfectly cooked as a soft-boiled. Menma was perfectly crunchy and soft with a good fragrance of seasoning. Bok Choy and green onions helps with the spiciness of the broth. And finally, their ground pork was just good as it is. All in all, $15 for a bowl is still a little expensive for the given portion. Don't get me wrong, it is good and I do find the quality to be, at least, decent. But $15 for a medium size bowl is just kind of unacceptable. Overall, I rate Bao Bun/Tantanmen in quantity, a C/C for the given price vs portion and in quality, a -A/B+. I have no problem with their food quality, but I'm not sure if I would eat here again because of the expense. The portion is technically good, but with the price being so high for the given portion, it makes me wonder if it is worth it. These ingredients to make the ramen and bun bao is actually fairly inexpensive. We're not talking about black truffles or kobe beef here. So, as much as I do praise the cook for their skills, the price is just absurd. I'm paying $33 including tax and with a good tip, that is $38 - $40. For that, I can essentially eat all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ or sushi for a lot less for decent quality food. So, here is my verdict. If you are here to hang out with friends and just want to have a good time with food, sure Sosoba does that job. If you don't care about money and quality food is all it matters, then I say go right ahead. But if you are worried about paying a lot more when you can find a better or about the same quality for a lot less, I recommend not eating here. I'm sorry, but until their price loosen a bit, I probably won't find myself eating here. read more

Found this place recently and already been there twice, love their mic drop soup however I choose to order it with ramen noodles and not their udon noodles which is how the soup is originally served. It's in a really cute area in downtown Phoenix on Roosevelt st to be specific. The last time I went was with my teenage son and we struggled to find parking nearby but parked within an appropriate walking distance it was actually really nice to walk through the neighborhood with all the beautiful trees turning colors. The restaurant is small and has been crowded both times I been there. First time I went it was really packed but the service was still great, the second time it was busy but not as crowded and service wasn't the best but nothing to make a big deal. We tried a few of their appetizers the bao and gyoza with the bao being our favorite but of course wishing it was more for the price. For now I been sticking with the mic drop because I'm one that loves many flavors and textures in my ramen and that one does it for me. The tantanmen tastes like spaghetti-o's and the noodles have that exact consistency. They are flaccid and soggy. Ive been to the Bun Shop in LA and was hoping to find a good place for buns in Phoenix. We were greeted as soon as we walked in. Unfortunately, that's where the service stopped. It took 10 minutes for someone to bring menus. Didnt ask if we wanted drinks. Another 10 mins until someone walked by and we stopped them to order drinks and put in our order. Can only order 3 of the same buns. I ordered the bulgogi, which was really dried out been with no flavor. Also ordered the Ball of Fire, a mac and cheese ball deep fried and injected with hot sauce. On my quest for delicious ramen led me to SoSoBa! I was searching for somewhere different with a little fancier style ramen than what I usually get and I found it here. SoSoBa is a cute restaurant tucked away in downtown Phoenix. After looking for a parking spot in the nearby neighborhood I met up with my fellow foodie and we headed inside. It wasn't too busy and we were able to pick a table to sit at. The waiter was very friendly and brought us some water and let us know we were in time for Happy Hour. Yes! We ordered some Mai Tais which were the upscale fancy version. The amaretto soaked cherry was delicious. The drink wasn't the overly sweet and was very good. Then we ordered the Katsu ramen, Mic Drop ramen, Bao Buns with Bulgogi Beef and the Macaroni and Cheese balls with Siracha. The broth in the ramen was flavorful and my Katsu chicken was crispy and there were lots of veggies. The egg was cooked perfectly. The Mic Drop had lots of pork! LOTS! My friend enjoyed it very much. The Macaroni and Cheese balls were good but not great. They could be cheesier. They had a perfect crisp to them though and the Siracha was a great addition. My favorite part of the meal was definitely the Bao Buns. Everything was good about them. I could probably eat the buns alone they were so good. The beef was tender and flavorful. I highly recommend coming in for happy hour so you can sample some ramens and drinks at 50% off to see what you like. I will definitely be back. From the outside I wouldn't think the food would be amazing much less would they have plant based/vegan options. I was wrong. Honestly, the only thing that could have been better was the ramen egg. It was cooked right with the runny middle, I just wished it was soaked in soy before. I also had the bad bao. I'm like 95% chinese and these baos were sososososo good. I had it with the pork belly and it has forever changed my life. The bun was soft and sweet and a little crispy. The hoisin sauce was sweet with a deep savory flavor. The Pork belly was heavenly. If it wasnt so expensive, I'd probably eat 30 of them. The restaurant itself is tucked in the middle of a tiny street. Parking was rough. The interior of the restaurant was clean but small. I do not recommend having a large party. There was no wait. The server was AWESOME. Polite, quick and helpful. He hooked us up with some extra sauce and our water cups were never dry. Let me preface this by saying we didn't actually eat here. Now let me explain. My girlfriend and I stopped in about 11.30 today for lunch. The place was empty and the waitress was friendly and attentive.
