I'll start with the positive: the food is very good, flavorful and beautifully presented. The ambiance is awesome and makes it a great spot for a date night. Unfortunately, the service was disappointing. Our waiter was rude, our water glasses were consistently empty, and she didn't check on us. When we asked questions about the menu, she responded with a blank expression and offered little help. We made our reservation specifically for the live saxophone music, but when we arrived, there was none. When we asked about it, we were told the musician was running late and would arrive later. We waited until the time we were given, but they never showed up. This was incredibly disappointing, as live music was the main reason we made the reservation. Our waiter never mentioned anything about it, only the hostess informed us, which we appreciated. She also kindly refilled our water. Additionally, when we made the reservation, it stated that CityScape parking would be validated. I handed our ticket to the waitress, and she was gone for about five minutes before returning it and saying it had been validated. However, when we went to leave, we found out it had not been validated, and we had to pay for parking. Overall, the experience was very disappointing. Because of the poor service, lack of communication about the live music (despite it being advertised), and the parking issue, I would not return. read more

It was so lovely, I went twice in one week. First on Taco Tuesday and again on Thursday. Twice on Thursday, lol. While the presentation was beautiful, the dish itself was disappointing. I also asked for salsa, but the server never came back with it. On top of that, our group was charged for an extra drink that no one ordered, and it was still left on our bill. The bathroom was not very clean, and the area outside the restaurant felt a bit sketchy, which made the overall experience less enjoyable. I'd like to start with the ambiance. We visited on a "Sabor and Sax" night, it was a very pleasant evening. The service was excellent the staff was attentive, and our waiter Alexa made sure we had everything we needed and checked in often to see how we were doing. If I could rate this place on service and ambiance alone, it would be 5 stars without a doubt. I always like to be honest in my reviews, so here's my take on the food: it was decent. However, I feel the menu and pricing could use some improvement. The birria tacos, for example, were good but nothing special--and I know I can find similar ones elsewhere for a lower price. The ceviche tasted fresh and flavorful, though the portion size felt small. I am not sure they have it as a main dish or appetizer. On the brighter side, the drinks were excellent; I really can't complain there. We also tried a complimentary chocolate cake, and it was moist and delicious. Overall, I would definitely come back for the atmosphere, live music, and drinks. I just hope to see more "finger foods" added to the menu to better match the lively, social vibe of sharing a good time with friends or loved ones. read more

Last minute choice to dine before the James Taylor concert at the Footprint. Incredibly close to the Center and a great choice for Mexican top shelf food. It was Cinco de May night and totally booked but managed to snag a table at the bar. Alyssa was a super friendly bartender that was quick to serve us and enjoyable to watch. Dinner was very scrumptious and a first for my friend who is more of a meat and potatoes type of guy. He ventured into the menu choosing the tacos. He loved them! I, in the other hand went for the rice and pork highly recommended by Alyssa. Can't go wrong with a rec from the staff! Highly recommend this intimate spot located on Jefferson. What amazing customer service from even before you walk through the doors! I called ahead to ask about recommendations for parking since it can be quite the headache in this part of town. Jared and Celene were both SO incredibly sweet and joyful! She gave me several suggestions including options for at least partially validated parking at the nearby CVS and Fryes parking lots! So thankful for them! Joined a foodie group to enjoy this establishment this evening and Casa De Julia did not disappoint! I ordered the Caesar salad - so delicious! I also ordered the Tacos Julia with steak. The steak was tasty but the tacos lacked a bit of flavor. I added salt, pepper, and lemon juice which helped. I found the cheese melted on took away from the enjoyable taste and texture of the tortilla. So I'd say FIVE stars for service but food was a bit pricey and not as flavorful as I wanted and parking is very expensive in the area. Parking and purchasing at CVS definitely helped offset the cost as it covered 2 hours but their customer service at CVS wasn't very friendly so that made it a bit awkward. Decided to have lunch here as my friends mentioned they had their anniversary dinner here and it was superb. Take note that reserving through opentable they need $$ to reserve to make sure you don't dip. I called for my reservation and was seated right away for 4 people at 2:30pm. It was a Saturday and it seemed like they were short staffed but our waiter was super nice. It did just take long for our drinks to come but they were delicious. One of us though did not get a drink as the waiter forgot but did tell us honestly he did forget and would take it off the bill. Then forgot to take it off the bill but when pointed, he did remove it. The overall ambiance was super cool. It was upscale Mexican but still nicely casual. The lunch menu was limited unlike the dinner menu that I saw my friend send me when he went. The food is pricier but it is delicious. I didn't get to take a photo of all the drinks and food but loved my Caesar salad so there's that! It's a nice spot, would love to see what kind of happy hour they'd do. We visited Casa de Julia for a friend's birthday celebration with a group of 10 people on 6/12, and the evening started off wonderfully. The food, atmosphere, music, and overall experience were delightful -- right on point; which is why the way the evening ended was especially disheartening. I want to clarify that our party was 10 guests, not 14 as stated in the response from management. Throughout the evening, guests ordered their own food and drinks and used phrases such as "put that on my tab." At no point during the meal was it clearly communicated that the restaurant does not split checks or allow multiple forms of payment. For a restaurant that hosts larger parties, this policy should be made extremely clear before guests begin ordering. Many bar and restaurant establishments handle groups by keeping individual tabs open throughout the evening, specifically to avoid confusion at the end of service. It should not fall on the customers to reconstruct and itemize a bill for 10 people after an entire evening of food, drinks, and conversation. While we absolutely understand what we personally ate and drank, expecting a group to accurately divide every item at the end of the night is unrealistic -- especially when multiple specialty cocktails and shared items are involved. It is difficult to remember exactly who had which drink after an entire celebration, and this is precisely why many establishments maintain separate tabs throughout the evening. What turned a great birthday celebration into a stressful experience was the way the bill was handled at the end. We were informed only at that point that the check could not be separated. After concerns were raised, another staff member attempted to help divide the bill, but guests were instructed to calculate their portions by adding a 20% service charge and an additional 20% for taxes. When questioned about the tax amount, staff could not clearly explain the calculation. Arizona sales tax is not 20%, and the explanation provided created additional confusion. The response from management states that the policies were "clearly stated," but from the customer's perspective, that communication did not happen effectively. A policy being listed somewhere does not replace a direct reminder from the server when a group is ordering individually and requesting tabs throughout the meal. Furthermore, there's no policy listed in the establishment at all. The food and atmosphere were excellent, and that is what makes this experience so frustrating. What should have been a memorable birthday celebration ended with unnecessary stress and frustration because expectations were not clearly communicated. For future guests, especially groups, I strongly recommend confirming payment policies before ordering. A simple reminder from the staff at the beginning of the meal would have prevented this entire situation. read more

This seems more like a great place for someone looking for some good Instagram photos with pretty food and no concern for the cost. I tried the papas Idaho and I like the mustard option. It is essentially some potato wedges. I also got the protein bowl for $15 and added chicken for another $8 and it might just be me but it felt more like it should have been an appetizer at the size provided. I probably would have liked some hot sauce or a little more seasoning to liven it up too. The service was great though. However, when the young host escorted us to our table, he showed us a table located at the back of the restaurant. He informed us that this was the only option, displaying a rather rude and arrogant demeanor. I was so excited to try Casa de Julia, and it was, unfortunately, so disappointing. We started with cocktails. Neither my husband nor I are fans of tequila or mezcal, so we ordered the one cocktail that is gin based. It would have been helpful if our server had mentioned that it is made with a smoky gin. Definitely not what we were expecting. Those were $18 each. Then the appetizer. We ordered $23 queso, which was a big block of soft cheese. The presentation was lovely, but the cheese itself had no flavor. It was like tofu. The salsa and cilantro helped, but definitely not worth $23. Then the entrees. My husband had the mole'. He liked it, but I found it to be very bitter. I ordered the Tacos de Julia on recommendation from the server. Each taco had a single small, thin slice of steak. Also, the menu listed caramelized onions as a topping, but it was not caramelized onions. It was an onion and pepper mixture, and I do not like peppers. For this 1 oz (maybe) of steak and pile of peppers, I was charged $20, even though the menu price is $19. I shared my concerns with the server. She offered to get me another entree, but we were on our way to a show and didn't have time to wait. She brought us 2 free shots of tequila...but, as I already mentioned, I don't drink tequila. The two stars are for the server and the chips. I love good food and don't complain about the cost unless it's not worth it. This was nowhere near worth it. Also, the music was terrible. It was mostly club remixes from a decade or two ago and very loud. If you go to Casa de Julia, maybe order the enchiladas or the flautas. Pre-show dinner on a Friday night. We had a reservation which needs to be secured with a credit card. That's fine. People can be rude. We tried to park near the venue for the 7 pm show at 5 pm. Note to selves: if you buy parking in advance for Arizona Financial Theater, they DON'T open for you until 5:45. So I called the restaurant and told them we would be late for our 5:15. They were very polite but warned us if we were later than 5:30 they had to give our table away. There is parking across the street at the CVS. We got there at 5:29. Lovely place. Drinks and food looked fantastic. They sat us at a table that was close to a window & a LOT of sun but they pulled the shade. They told us dinner would be 1.5 hours. We told them we had the show at 7 so we would order dinner immediately and then look at the drink menu. My friend ordered mole, I asked for Tacos Xicali and a side of the corn "ribs" Then we waited about 10 minutes for the server (who was very sweet) to return so we could order drinks. The have a lovely selection of cocktails but when asked about specifics, our server had to go ask what certain alcohols were. To be fair, they were new to me too. I ordered the Gracias a Tila & my friend had the Whispers at Sunset. Cocktails are beautiful. Gorgeous coupe glasses, mine with a purple flower, hers had a slice of lime on a toothpick across the top. We tried each other's drinks, swapped and then we were both happy. Both were tasty. We just liked each other's better. Hers was a little sweeter than mine. The corn was delicious. Cut into wedges, sprinkled with cotija cheese and tan after being grilled. Delightful. The mole was a small thigh and drumstick covered in a beautiful, brown sauce. She received a small side of rice in a bowl and 3 very thin blue-corn tortillas. The chicken was cooked perfectly & the sauce was good. I believe that was $35. The 3 tacos were tiny. Picture the bottom of a water glass. Each tortilla was about that big for each taco. Two tortillas per taco and what could not have been more than a sliver of steak on each. They were beautiful and the toppings were tasty. Served with it was about a quarter of a perfectly grilled onion which was DELICIOUS and very authentic. Still, it was $21. The tacos were an appetizer at best. My friend shared some of her mole & rice. I am not a big person but I was still hungry after eating my dinner & part of hers. We did have time for dessert and ordered the arroz con leche and tres leches cake. The presentation could not have been better. Both were very good. My friend loved the tres leches. It was good but, honestly, I'm just not a fan of tres leches in general. The arroz con leche is comfort food & was very good, but not my nana's. The fruit was a nice touch. Also had coffee but I barely remember it so, not the best, not the worst. We walked to the venue from there and got there in about 10 minutes tops. Straight, easy shot. I am very torn. I wanted to love every single thing but did not. The server was VERY nice but I wouldn't call it fantastic service. We waited around a lot. Higher prices are fine for fantastic food. I cook Mexican food. It's a lot of work. I get it, When done right, it's worth it. There are other things I would love to try on the. menu but, honestly, I don't know that it would be worth the trip for me. The restaurant business is tough. I'll do my share to support great restaurants. I don't know if the restaurant is new and they're working out the kinks or if that's the best it gets. It was a little funny when I called and, first got an automated answer. Said something about celebrating Cinco de May-yo. We met some friends for dinner to try their Restaurant Week three course menu. Upon arrival (with reservations) we were immediately seated and told our waitress that our friends would be there soon. About 3-minutes later the waitress came back and asked if we were ready to order dinner. We told her that we were still waiting on our friends and asked if we could order some drinks. After our friends arrived and we all had drinks then we placed our orders. Soon three of the four appetizers came out, it was another 5 minutes before the fourth appetizer arrived. The Auguachile Camarons were very acidic and needed more guacamole or something to cut back on the acidity. The Chicaharron Pork Belly served with green salsa and guacamole was very well prepared it was crispy on the outside and very tender and tasty inside. My wife ordered the Asodo Puerco for her entree but it didn't have any flavor nor did the rice or beans everything was bland with no distinguishing taste. I had the Braised Short Rib for my entree. The meat was not tender I had to use my knife to cut it up. Paired with the mole sauce, and mashed potatoes made it better but it was very chewy. For dessert I had the Coco Flan but it tasted like a dry chocolate cake with no taste of moist custard. My wife had the Arroz Leche however we never did taste or see any cinnamon just the taste of rice in a pudding. The other thing that became an issue was the music, when dinner started it was at a nice background volume so we could easily talk. By the end of dinner we had to almost yell across the table as the volume kept increasing. It was a very expensive meal, plus having to navigate downtown and pay to park, not worth the 45 minute drive. It was great to see our friends but I don't see us eating here again. read more
