Update after business owner's response: There's nothing wrong with a customer asking for your business license # to verify you're actually licensed. If you read any decent article on how to hire contractors or tradespeople it says customers should ask. I have a right to know if a business owner is licensed and insured before I go the bother of setting aside my time for an appt. or have you enter my home. As anyone familiar with the construction and rehab industry knows there are many unlicensed tradespeople doing work in people's homes. A reputable business would not freak out by being asked if they are licensed and insured, especially if it is required. You should be happy to share that info with prospective customers because it sounds shady when you want to hide it. ------------------------------------------------------------------- The son called me back today after sending a Yelp message to set up an appointment. When I asked if they were licensed and insured as a company he sounded unsure. When I asked him to repeat the business license # so I could write it down he sounded nervous and then claimed they were "too busy to take on work" and promptly hung up on me! If you were too busy to take on work then why did you call me to set up an appointment? Then he sent me a Yelp message saying they won't work with me because I am a real estate company (I'm not). John was very responsive and from the several places I called, he was the only one who offered to come look at it first and give me an estimate. John works with his two sons (family owned business) and they certainly were very professional. They were able to schedule the work in a couple of days. The work they did was very clean and net. They showed up on time and were able to get it all done within 5-6hrs. We hired Sostilio and Sons to do the conversion of our oil boiler to gas boiler and water heater. They were efficient and courteous and did a great job with the install. There were multiple issues at the end of the job due to errors by the utility company and local inspector that would havr left our family with young children without hot water for quite some time. Mike went above and beyond to make sure we had hot water and that he could test the new system even though it interfered with his scheduled vacation. My shower shutoff was having issues and was slipping so that it was upside down in the off position. After taking it apart myself, I couldn't tell what was wrong. I called John, he came out that day and fixed it with a new valve which now works great. My original thought was that I didn't want to bother them for something small like this, but I am glad I did. The old valve that was part of the shower kit was mostly plastic and destroyed. We put the new shower in about 5 or 6 years ago so I never thought it would break already. I have now hired Sostilio & Sons twice. Each time the work performed was outstanding. They arrived when the said that they would, performed the work as agreed upon and were able to take on additional items that came up during the day. The first call was to install a water softening system and new water heater. In addition, they were able to remove some excess plumbing which made the entire setup more efficient and took up far less space in the basement. The second call was to fix a rather large leak from the 2nd floor washing machine. They found that the emergency drain was in appropriate connected, and resolved that setup. Additionally, they re-balanced the appliances to reduce the vibrations while running, and also addressed a valve problem with our shower. Ultimately, out of both experiences, I came with a comfortable level of trust with Sostilio & Sons, not only in the work performed but with the recommendations provided. Fantastic experience, will definitely be calling John and Mike whenever I have plumbing and heating needs! Just bought a house in Hudson and had a quick job: run a couple gas lines so I can install a gas clothes dryer, gas oven/range in the kitchen, and gas grill out back. I called probably a dozen companies and only one called me back, one of the more popular ones in Hudson (to remain nameless). So the guy came out to do an estimate, spent about 2 minutes looking at the current setup in my basement, didn't even look up from the clipboard, didn't talk to me about what was going to happen, refused to give me even a ballpark estimate nor tell me when it could get done, and didn't even shake my hand when he left! A week later, I received an email "estimate" with no detail - it may as well have been handwritten on a napkin. All it said was: "Run gas lines: $$$$$$$$". Needless to say I was not pleased and so made another attempt to find a reputable plumber. Contacted John and Mike on Yelp and within a few hours they had replied and set up a time later in the week to come out for an estimate. When they came out, they spent the time to look everything over, talk to me about what I was trying to do, and even recommended they change up some of the other plumbing to accommodate. Then they gave me the estimate on the spot (1/3 less then the other guy) and said they could come out the following Thursday to get it done. They came back out on the Thursday and ran the lines in about 3-4 hours. Done and done. read more
