Appetizers - BBQ Jerk wings, New Orleans Shrimp, and Fried Green Tomatoes
    Rachel H.

My family is from Lawndale and my husband grew up in North Lawndale and this business is such a great asset to the Lawndale community. Decided to stop in with my husband just for a quick drink and appetizers at the bar. When we first walked in we were greeted professionally and sweetly (that Auntie feel). We did not have a reservation and she was going to seat us regardless, but we opted to sit at the bar because at this point I just wanted to check it out and not have a full dining experience because I had cooked dinner. My husband has been telling me about this place and how he's been hearing great things about the establishment so I was excited to experience it and I'm glad I did! The food, appetizers we ordered were excellent! I mean really really good. We ordered the bbq jerk wings, New Orleans shrimp and the fried green tomatoes. All excellent! The wings were not that jerk hot but just right and full of flavor with that wonderful grill taste to them. I don't even really like fried green tomatoes and always thought they were over hyped - not here!! They were delicious!!! My favorite dish thus far. Nicely breaded/seasoned and so fresh, plump and juicy. I've had them before in New Orleans and they were flat and tasteless. You can tell the tomatoes they use here are nice and fresh/firm. The drinks were delicious too. Not just good but also pretty. These girls are not just bartenders, they're mixologists and know how to make good and pretty drinks. I love a craft cocktail!' I had the "Whew Chile" and my husband ordered the "Polk Street" the whew chile was a fresh margarita and whew chile!! After two I was nice and toasty literally saying "whew Chile" so the drinks name is definitely appropriate..lol! The service was great for us at the bar. The young lady making our drinks and serving us I believe name was Cherish and this young lady was awesome!! She has a very sweet, hospitable personality that will take her far. She's the type of person when you go out and sit at a bar you want her to be there behind it. Price point is good and comparable to most fine dining experiences, and the inside is really nice. I really do pray Soulé continues to do exceptionally well and have great longevity because it felt so good to be able to eat, drink and have a wonderful, safe time in my community. If I can pay $300 to dine for two at Rosebud downtown, I can pay that same amount to dine here and have just as great of time and eat just as good of food. Like the terminator I'll be back....

Either Somebody from DownSouth cooks the food and flies it up here daily or someone here has some good(*real good) southern style cuisine training(*they cook like my momma) & I just recently visited South Carolina and the food here is tasting neck & neck with what I was eating down there...& these are the portion sizes that big boned people like me love (if you like to eat #ComeGetIt)...& man oh man the music playing throughout the place not only complements the atmosphere it makes you feel like your a grandmas Sunday dinner & partying with the family...I'm placing Soule in my top 3 restaurants(& not only of chicago) categories I will be a recurring customer...we had the Cajon Salmon bites, Fried salmon jerk pasta, southern fish & grits, cornbread(was do greedy I ate the cornbread before I could get a picture, plus banana pudding to go(2) with Soule punch to drink

    Jerk Salmon with potatoes

Good food and service! We loved everything we ordered. The fish was perfect! That jerk salmon with potatoes was yummy. Their side dishes were very good, with the exception of the greens. The green were okay enough to try them yourself. They were just too salty for my tastebuds. The drinks were tasty! The restaurant was clean. I didn't get to check out the bathrooms here but the place was clean so I didn't worry about it. Try everything I am sure you won't be disappointed.

Definitely book ahead. We all ordered the Grand Tasting, which lets you try three entrees plus a beverage. It was so much food but everything was delicious. I had the short rib, fried chicken, and catfish, each with different sides. The only thing I did not really care for was the dressing. They also had live entertainment, which made the vibe even better. Customer service was just okay, but I would still recommend it. I definitely want to try their other location since I have heard the menu is different.

The ambiance wasn't quite what I expected, but the service and food made up for it. I ordered the Caribbean stuffed turkey leg, which came with pasta, spinach, a couple of jumbo shrimp, and a turkey drumstick. The dish was flavorful and satisfying overall. My only criticisms were that the spinach was chopped so finely that it was hard to really taste it, and the turkey drumstick seemed smaller than expected. I was hoping for a meatier drumstick, but most of the meat was concentrated toward the bottom of the bone. For dessert, I had a slice of carrot cake, and it was excellent. I would have loved for it to be served warm, but it was still moist, flavorful, and a great way to end the meal. I also tried the fried pound cake, and unfortunately, it was a miss for me. It didn't taste like pound cake, and honestly, it wasn't a very good cake in general. It's not something I would order again. One thing I noticed is that the menu doesn't appear to offer appetizers or salads, which might be something to consider if you're looking for more variety before your main course. Overall, I enjoyed my visit. While there were a few things that could be improved, the stuffed turkey and carrot cake were enjoyable, and I'd be willing to come back and try something else on the menu.

On a random Thursday, my business partner and I decided to grab lunch/happy hour to catch up. I specifically wanted to support a Black-owned business, and she instantly said, "Soul Vibez." As a frequent TikTok viewer, I was excited to finally try it. We arrived right when they opened at 1 PM and were seated in a small cozy booth in the back. Our server came over cheerful and welcoming, asking if we'd had a chance to look at the menu. I told her it was my first time, and she smiled even bigger, sharing all her favorite drinks and how to get the best value. We decided on a tequila flight (blueberry, leche, and strawberry). She headed straight to the bar to make them herself and when I tell you EVERY drink was strong, fresh, and flavorful... I loved it! My business partner then whispered, "You know she's the owner, right?" I said, "No way!" She was so kind, down-to-earth, and personable. When she came back, she said, "Let's start with some appetizers," and recommended her favorites. We went with the deviled eggs with lobster bites and the jerk chicken egg rolls and they did NOT disappoint. Every bite was fresh and delicious. For our entrees, she again highlighted the top sellers and her personal favorites. We ordered the blackened catfish and the stuffed salmon. It didn't take long to come out, and when it did, it was beautifully presented and piping hot. Everything tasted incredible, and the service was consistent, fast, and genuine. The fact that the owner was our server made the experience even more special. I would've never known if my business partner hadn't told me. When we acknowledged it, she just smiled bright and said, "Thank you so much for being here and choosing us." I immediately replied, "See you soon, sis!" I will definitely be back. Y'all go check them out you won't be disappointed!

We arrived and the parking lot was full but I squeezed into a street spot. The line was too the door but they were moving pretty fast. The decor is outdated but that's not what you come for. Loved the history reflected with the photos of customers including former President Obama, current Governor Pritzker and Mayor Johnson. The photos of Jesse Jackson before and after his health deteriorated shows the legacy of this community bedrock. There's also a spot to donate books. This place has changed so have realistic expectations. It is cafeteria style (to go) but you can sit down and eat from your styrofoam container. First the online menu was wrong. We were told that they don't have fish on Sundays. Honestly if I knew that beforehand I wouldn't have gone that day. I decided to get fried chicken, greens and dressing with a side of mac and cheese. The chicken was dry, the greens were a lil salty and the dressing was dry but tasty. I wish i had gotten the gravy on the side. The macaroni and cheese was yummy. My guy got the short ribs, greens and string beans. Like the greens the short ribs were a lil salty. The ribs were cooked to perfection. The meat fell off the bone and melted in your mouth. Overall, I would say try it for yourself. If you like things on the salty side this might be ideal. The meals come with a muffin. It was sweet and so soft that it fell apart in your hands. Please note that individual sides are $3.04 with tax which isn't too bad. You also only get one muffin nit two like the website says. I plan to return on a fish day but it probably won't be soon. I'm optimistic that they will make some changes and update the website.

My "plate" (styrofoam container) was so heavy it cracked! I was given a second bag to catch spillage. I commented that this would be dinner and probably lunch tomorrow. The cashier and serving gentleman chuckled and agreed. I saw the passion tea and ordered that also. Now, the taste. The pork chops are delicious. Gravy is good, meat is tender and not too salty. They're good size chops, I didn't finish one. Max and cheese is very cheesy. Well seasoned and noodles are firm and not mushy. The dressing is not it for me. It's a little "mealy" and not much flavor. I can taste the sage but it feels undercooked to me. The cornbread muffin is okay. Not as sweet as jiffy mix, but too sweet to be hot water cornbread. I will return and try some other sides. Prayerfully next time they'll have the turkey wings or fried ribs I wanted to try. However the gravy from the pork chops on some mashed potatoes would be heavenly.

The sides were perfect, which again I say they deserve high marks. The highlight dish for me was the Cajun pasta that I ordered with shrimp. This reminded me of the same that I enjoyed in Louisiana. There was the right amount of sauce so that the pasta was not drowning in it. The seasoning was neither salty nor overpowering nor all over the place. Plenty room for seating and spread out enough that people are not all on top of each other. I got there early, so it had not packed out as I'm sure it does later in the day. For nights that I don't want to cook, they may get my dollars. The food was certainly worth it.

At the time, the restaurant was listed high as I searched for southern food nearest to me. Also, its 4.3 star rating out of 7000+ was the assurance I needed that I would receive quality food. Looking through the menu, the pescatarian in me was drawn to mario's catfish sandwich which comes as either southern fried or grilled farm raised, with the option of either fries or potato salad. I ended up ordering the sandwich in the form of southern fried, with potato salad as my side order. It took twenty-five minutes from the time my order was acknowledged by Uber Eats to the arrival of it at the hospital I work out of. Much praise to the Uber Eats delivery driver, Walter for making that happen at that reasonable time, as well as meeting me at the main entrance of our hospital where I waved confirming that I saw him. And Walter confirmed that it was me grabbing the order, which I cannot thank him so much for. I loved the potato salad! Seeing it seasoned made me curious of its taste which ended up being far from a disappointment; It was by far the best potato salad I have ever had, and that is not exaggeration. Now what I found interesting about mario's catfish sandwich was that it was placed on a hamburger bun rather than a sub-style bun. Even with it on a hamburger bun it was nicely presented inside of a styrofoam container. It was lightly seasoned, topped with lettuce, onion, and tomato! I further added tartar sauce to give it the taste that I love. I really enjoyed mario's catfish sandwich and would consider ordering it again.
