This review is a heads up to the owner/manager. We have eaten here many times and have never been disappointed. Yesterday (9/11/18) at lunch was a different story. The catfish was greasy, the fries which are usually excellent were limp and greasy and I was served a corn muffin with my catfish. I did get my hush puppies after asking my server why I had a muffin instead of the usual hush puppies. We will be back but a little quality control would be appreciated. read more

Soul Fish is my go-to place as soon as I arrive in Memphis. Having lived there for 26 years but now residing in CA, it's something I look forward to each time I go home to visit family. I often go multiple times during my stay! The food is great; the service is quick and efficient. My only complaint about all the locations is that the photographs on the walls of people and their fish are ALL WHITE PEOPLE. Every time I eat at Soul Fish, at least half of the customers are African-American, yet they are not at all represented in the photos on the walls. I'm sure I'll be accused of being "PC" or a "snowflake," but why not honor those who help make your business so successful? African Americans are part of the fabric of the Memphis community, just like whites. They deserve equal representation. read more

First time here and we were blown away with the attention by Adam the manager and Nikki our waitress, they were awesome! Catfish was melt in your mouth good, smoked carrots and fresh coleslaw were excellent and the smoked wings were to die-for! Local craft beer on tap was a huge plus for us. Been here twice. Avoided trying because my mother told me the one in Germantown was awful. That was a couple of years back though. The catfish was crispy and not mushy, it was almost leaning towards being overly salty. The hushpuppies were greasy, no idea why this is an app and a "top-rated" item. I got Cajun cabbage and white beans for sides. There are a ton of side choices. There was nothing Cajun about the cabbage, very sweet, which I found odd. The white beans had a weird flavor. My daughter and mother liked everything. We also got desserts and they were all to-die- for. Coconut cake, banana cake and lemon pie (that crust). Both cakes were great. Let me start off on a positive note and say that I have been to the soul fish in germantown and midtown and the food and service was excellent. The issue with this location is not the food, it was our waitress. Initially, I thought she was behaving oddly so I made sure to observe her interactions with her other customers. She was very friendly to her Caucasian and African American customers. I guess she just dislikes Asians. She was struggling to make eye contact with us while taking our order, did not follow-up to see if our food was as expected (I had to chase her down to tell her we were missing something), and wouldn't give us her time to allow us to finish our sentences. I moved here from LA (very diverse) and grew up in Hawaii. By Hawaii standards, this would be the complete opposite of what Aloha Spirit is and i cannot see myself ever coming back to any soul fish again having been treated differently because of my ethnicity. I can pay for catfish someplace else without the racism, thank you very much! read more

Like some of the other reviewers, I had a similar experience with trying to make a substitution. A few times I was able to add grilled chicken to the veggie tacos, no onions (delicious, even though they refuse to offer sour cream). Then I hit a wall with the newly implemented "no substitutions" policy about a year and a half ago. We were at the East Memphis location, I ordered the veggie tacos (add chicken, no onions). The server immediately told me she couldn't do it or the owner would yell at her. I told her I felt bad for her, but insisted that I had ordered the tacos in Germantown so she offered to try. She returned with a nasty message from the owner. He wanted me to know that he would do me a "favor" and make them this time; however I would not be allowed to make substitutions going forward. I had the server tell him to come and talk to me directly about this, which he did and I politely shared with him that if every other restaurant in town can make substitutions then he should train his staff to do the same. He said that his staff was not able to handle this - no accountability from him as the owner, completely the staff's fault. We got up and left, it was just too silly for adult behavior. Perhaps I was a bit dramatic, after all there are so many great places to eat in Memphis, but he made the situation personal with his "message." It's too bad, I am sure he does very well. However, there is a market for people who don't want to eat fried food (or onions!) and would appreciate some reasonable flexibility. read more

While the location in East Memphis and decor are wonderful, this place seems to miss the mark on its food. Maybe I'm insane. Each time I visited I expected more than what was delivered and every time I've been disappointed. The food comes to the table hot, which is great but things drop off from there. The catfish is their calling card yet servings are skimpy for the price and the salty flavoring can be overwhelming. I'm wanting to taste the catfish, not the over salted batter. The basket of catfish is the one thing they should do right, yet they missed on each occasion. The hushpuppies have a hint of flavor and crunch but come across as processed aka frozen. Far from the fresh and mealy bite you expect when cooked from scratch. The Po Boy has a nice doughy toasted bun but the fish/shrimp is lost in the mix. I understand the economics of food cost but in this case, I'd like more shrimp than bread, lettuce and tomato in my shrimp po boy. They need to raise their game as there are better choices in Memphis when you are seeking true authentic fried catfish and Po Boys. read more

Consistently bad service. I came in today on May 19, 2016 with hesitation, based on prior bad experiences. After over ten minutes of being ignored after being seated I asked the host if anyone was coming. I wasn't trying to be rude, just wanted to make sure they knew I was there after numerous wait staff walked past me without acknowledging me. Right after, one of the wait staff comes up and yells at me in front of the other customers for having the nerve to ask to be waited on. I will never be back, obviously. read more

He must have a stick up his *** b/c he will not let you substitute blackened salmon onto the southwest salad but will let you purchase the caesar salad with blackened salmon. Picked up a take out order from the cooper location near the hospitals last Friday,Sept. 25th. The order totaled $85.31. Missing from the order were two slices of cake for a cost of $9.50. I called the restaurant and spoke to a manager & asked if I could pickup the cake at the Germantown location which is closer to my home. He said yes he would call over & have them place it in their books, I called to place a take out order today at the Germantown location, I asked if they would include the cake in my order. They placed a manager on the line that said NO I would need to go back to the Midtown location.This is not good customer service at all, they lost a order of $45.00 & a customer.Food is great however the manager on duty Friday, 10/2 @4 lacks good customer service skills. read more

Yesterday was my first visit to Soul Fish. The customer service is awesome. Our waitress was attentive and very accommodating for first time visitors. The food however was not as amazing as I expected. Maybe I'm more of a soul foodie and comparing the chain sides to soul food restaurants is a bit unfair. Loved the catfish.
