Ordered the special- 4 drumsticks and two sides. Had fried okra and a serving of the Mac and cheese. Hubby had the half chicken with seasoned fries and Mac and cheese. That chicken is FIRE!! In a good way ... but be warned it is served fresh hot AND spicy hot! I'm normally a wimp for the hot stuff but I toughed it out and LOVED every moment of my lips burning. I would have normally gotten a little ranch to dip, but that felt like it may be a sin at Gus's! I didn't want to insult the cook like that! If we lived closer I would order a gallon of those greens for every holiday and say it was my "special recipe Our server, Princess (the best smile ever!) was fabulous! The fried chicken absolutely rocked my world. Wow! The crunch, the heat, and the juicy chicken tell me why it's famous. The collard greens were great. Hint of tang with great seasoning. The baked beans had a beautiful bbq sauce with a little heat from jalapeño. However... the other sides were completely lacking. The coleslaw tasted like it came out of a bucket. Just premade. The potato salad was overwhelmed by pickle flavoring and tasted like sweet relish. That seemed to be homemade though. The Mac n cheese was just underwhelming, unfortunately. The restaurant has a very casual, fun feel, even though it's is a little touristy a lot of locals frequent here. I was greeted and my order of 3 piece dark with beans and coleslaw taken by a very nice lady. I enjoyed watching the perfectly browned , steaming hot chicken go out to the patiently waiting customers and their delight at first bite! I made it home food still hot and I dug in and remembered why Gus's is a must try if you're in Memphis. The chicken has a kiss of spice, not hot and moist and juicy, not greasy. Recommended by the kind woman at the front desk of the hotel. I was sat immediately and I didn't have to wait to eat. Restaurant was nice and cool. Service was impeccable. Food was even better. Uniformed police officer on duty just posted up on a stool inside gave the restaurant some extra charm. Food this good is worth being passionate about, apparently. I got all the chicken. Gus's world famous fried chicken is a Memphis staple. The inside is a bit small at the east Memphis location but we were able to find a table no problem. Our server was very attentive to all our needs and did a great job. As you can see I only have a bit of chicken left in my image, but this is because I could not wait to dive into this meal. The chicken is lightly breaded and the breading is slightly spice which gives it great flavor. The fries and mac n cheese were perfectly seasoned, but cost an additional 0.50 cents a piece to swap from the original sides. I enjoyed every single bite of this meal, so if you love quality fried chicken and southern sides this is your place. I got my food, did my mini photo shoot, and then noticed how small the thighs were on my plate. I don't know why I keep trying fried chicken places. I remembered I didn't like the chicken the first time but decided to give them another try. Chicken was ok today. More of a traditional crust instead of the tempura crust I got the first time. And it was SPICY! No denying that. It was a better fried chicken this go around. But what I am mad about is the sides. Da music be bumpin' up in here on a Sunday afternoon. Only took 6 minutes to be greeted at our table and 25 minutes to wait on our food to arrive when we were two of 7 people in there.
