I can't tell if they had a bad day in the kitchen or if this is how their food is all the time. But for my first experience with them, it wasn't overall pleasing. I get times are hard, but with the way they priced the food, it wasn't worth it honestly. I had ordered the lemon pepper fried catfish strips, they were honestly decent, wish they made their own in house tartar to serve with it instead. I also ordered 6 piece garlic parmesan wings with two sides, mac and cheese and red beans and rices. Wings were small and the sauce over the wings were overpowering and instantly made the chicken lose its crispy texture. Mac and cheese needed more flavoring. Red beans and rice were decent to me as well. I can never pass up banana pudding so I wanted to give it a try... honestly the biggest disappointment of everything I had ordered. No actual bananas in it. No nilla wafers, they put graham crackers instead. It was banana flavored pudding, but right off the bat you know the pudding and whipped cream on top gave super artificial flavor. I wanted to try more items, but everything I had mentioned came up to about $80. I'm glad I didn't lose out on any more money on food I could've made myself at home. We got a Groupon for this place and decided to grab dinner here. It's located in the tzar dumpling shop so it looks like they share the kitchen The groupon was for 1lb of catfish with 6 hush puppies. The ordering was a little weird. We called to place our order and they told us to text instead. Also if we pay card, it was $1 charge, but if you pay cash, it has to be exact change... On to the food: The catfish was fresh and hot, but not as flavorful. There was some spice but you can barely taste it. The hush puppies were denser than most but it was flavorful, however some pieces were still cold inside. Price: without the Groupon, it would have been around $20, which is pricy in my opinion. Phenomenal! Delicious! I love ordering from here. Expect the food to take a while, but it comes FRESH and fantastic. The collard greens are so well seasoned (a lot of places under salt their collards), the mac n cheese is tasty and comforting, the red beans and rice is everything I want it to be, and the chicken makes my mouth water just LOOKING at it (and the smell! the crunch! have mercy). When I crave fried chicken I want classic country fried--not the saucy stuff most chicken places around Seattle have. The food is SO GOOD. I think the parking is obnoxious, and finding the place (inside another) is confusing. I think the only suggestion I'd have is for the packaging of the food. The mac/yams are too wet for boxes. I think containers would be better for sides. But the food. It's definitely soul food. The hush puppies were moist and I could eat those yams every day. I would not call this health food because it is rich but I felt the ingredients used were quality so I didn't feel crappy afterwards. A generous three... Fried chicken had no seasoning. Caesar salad had a tangy dressing. Small amount of mac and cheese for $11.99. Greens were just ok. Hush puppies and fried fish were the best. The red beans are rice were ok. The wait was pretty long but there might be only one worker... what really topped it for me was our "caramel cake" being a Costco poppy seed muffin with some caramel and whipped cream on top. We ordered for the first time last night. It was delivered very quickly, with generous portions, and everything was very tasty. Our favorite was probably the fried chicken. This would be a zero star review if I had the option. Besides being rude, the woman I dealt with doesn't know how to run a business. I called to place my order as per the directions on the Groupon. She was annoyed when she answered and told me that they don't accept orders over the phone. She asked me to text. So I texted my order and received a response that my order would be ready in 10 min; I needed to pay $3 via Zelle for taxes; text on arrival and she would have the food "upfront" which I took to mean she would bring it to me. I sent a text just before arriving and waited for 5 min. I then sent my son in. After a few more minutes, he called me telling me to text the Groupon and pay the $3 (which I had already paid). I sent her a screenshot of the Groupon and was in the process of sending the Zelle receipt when she came out. I heard her in the background complaining about how she needed to cook. She came to my car and was in a nasty mood. She said that I need to present the Groupon and pay via Zelle. I showed her my phone with the Groupon text to her and the Zelle receipt. First, it was confusing because the address for Soul turned out to be a different restaurant entirely. Pel Meni Dumpling Tsar was the actual restaurant, with a completely different menu. There was no signage anywhere that indicated Soul. That's pretty sketchy. As for the food. It was ok. But not great. I had the pork chop meal with collards and red beans and rice. I felt they could have used spices. A little heat (pepper) for example would turn the collards from dull to interesting. The hush puppies were okay and the mac&cheese tasted good, but was greasy. But the Pork Chops! I started off with VERY high expectations for an eatery named Soul. Once my mother and I arrived I called, and the woman that answered informed me that we would need to place our order online. My mother and I started our order but realized once it was placed that the amount of time it would take to make it would cut it real close to my flight time. I called the shop back and informed the woman that answered that I could not pick up my food and I would need to cancel the order I placed 2mins before. She informed me she couldn't cancel it and it would need to cancelled through the app I placed it with. I called grub hub and they wouldn't cancel it because the eatery marked it as ready. I called Soul back and the woman told me she already started the food and wouldn't stop until grub hub tells her too. She then proceeded to talk over me as I tried to reason with her, and even told me grub hub called her about this same issue. Ultimately she refused to continue making an order I clearly told her I couldn't pick up. As well as inform me that she owned this place but couldn't do anything about it. First of all, you must know that this is INSIDE the Tzar restaurant -- there is no signage to indicate that this is where you should be. I got the mac and cheese, greens, and hush puppies. Terrible place to go the rice had wayy to much liquid in it & with the beans on top were a disappointment. It's suppose to be sweet beans ontop not normal brown beans.
