Yelp's listing is incorrect; the restaurant is still very much in business, and serving one of the most fragrant and flavorful chow I have ever had. I became a huge fan of Laotian food when one of the Thai restaurants in Ithaca decided to shift their focus onto one of the most underrepresented cuisines in the US, and was sad when they closed - unexpectedly - a few years ago. Laos has its own, unique, cuisine, which unfortunately gets lumped with Thai (Laab/Larb, for instance, is Laotian national dish). During one of our late trips we have decided to take a detour and check out SoulLao'd. It was so good that, on the way back, we took another detour, just to dine there. Many people don't know that sticky rice is used as a tool (akin to spoon/fork) to scoop the food out. Again, that's understandable, considering how few Lao restaurants we have around. It may take a few minutes for novices to figure it out, but once that's over, it's all smooth sailing. I suggest that you go for the SouLao'd Specialty Dishes. I had the raw Laab Sein (Beef Salad), and - on the way back - Peeng Lein (Grilled Beef Tongue), both spiced the way it is meant to be, Chef's suggestion ("You want it the authentic way? You got it"). Hubby had Laab Kai (Chicken Salad) both times; I guess he loved the dish. Make sure you ask about Sai Oua; this incredible pork sausage is not a regular staple; being home-made it takes a lot of preparation. ***If you go to a Laotian restaurant, take advantage of how lucky you are to come across one, and do not go for the usual Thai food. If you do, you will miss quite an adventure. *** Service was enthusiastic, attentive and knowledgeable - it is a family-owned restaurant, and Chef's daughter pretty much runs the business. I was in the hospital where the food was truly bad so a friend brought me take out. We ordered chicken satay, spicy lemongrass soup, and a noodle and chicken dish. The satay was dry and the accompanied sauce had no taste, unfortunately. The soup was low to medium spicy ,enough for me. Aside from the spice, I couldn't taste any lemongrass and the chicken in the soup was also extremely dry. Small yet cozy restaurant, the waitress was also a family member who owns the restaurant, family business. Stopped by this cozy spot I found online and left impressed. The warmth of the staff set the tone, and the flavors did not disappoint. Wow, what a wonderful surprise, this tiny little restaurant is very big and bold in Thai/Lao flavors, with freshly homemade dishes and warm friendly hospitality. Their Tom Yum Soup is absolutely stella, haven't had anything quite like it, simply an extraordinarily delicious Thai standard with a phenomenal flavorful Lao spin. Spring Rolls in the past haven't been a go-to of mine, however; that was changed this evening. It was the freshest biggest most delicious Spring Roll I've had anywhere at anytime. This is a hard review to score. On one hand, there were significant service issues that would ordinarily cause me to leave a 2 Star review. On the other hand, for the most part, the food was good and probably warrants about a 4 Star review. Here's what happened so you can judge for yourself. A long time ago, somebody recommended SouLao'd (SL). Since I live 35 minutes away in a different state, it seemed like a random recommendation, which is why I remembered it. I visited the East Springfield location today before playing poker at MGM. Neither the location nor the restaurant atmosphere are selling points, but both are fine. I found nearby street parking. SL can probably seat about 20 people comfortably, and I saw two people sitting when I walked in. I didn't see any employees, but it seemed like the type of place where you could seat yourself, so I did. Five minutes passed before I saw an employee. I was fairly close to folding a bad hand early, when somebody arrived from the back. While I was waiting, I had time to review the menu, which was under glass on my table. I had decided on a combo that included chicken fried rice, a Sautéed chicken noodle dish called Kua Mee, egg rolls, and chicken wings. The price listed was $16.99, which is important to this review. I ordered when I first saw the employee because I feared I wouldn't see her for another 5 minutes. I pointed to the menu when I ordered. I also ordered a water, and the employee directed me to get it myself from a cooler. She did not give me the option of free tap water. My food took less than 10 minutes. The fried rice and noodles arrived first. Both had good, slightly salty and sweet flavor. They were both packed with veggies and chicken. Looked great. Tasted great. Had good texture. The chicken wings and egg rolls arrived next. I've been eating a lot of high end wings recently so my curve may be a bit harsh, but the wings were a bit below average for me. The texture was just OK. There was no sauce or noticeable seasoning on the wings. Rather, you had to dip the wings in a sweet chili sauce. The egg rolls were the thin crunchy kind. They were fine, but didn't really pop for me. Things turned sideways when the bill arrived. My bill was more expensive than I anticipated. They charged me $20.49 instead of the $16.99 menu price for the combo. A $3.50 price difference. I asked about the price. The employee told me that the menu under the glass was old and the prices were outdated. There was nothing visible from my table advising of higher prices. When I pointed at the menu, she didn't tell me the cost was higher. Later, I looked at SL's website and the price listed for this combo is $17.99. So the website price was inconsistent with their in person menu, and I was charged $2.50 more than the website price. So best case scenario, SL is disorganized and provides false price information about its dishes in multiple formats. Worst case scenario, SL intentionally charged me a higher price for some reason. Either way, I can't support a business that charges more than their stated menu price. Notwithstanding the very good rice and noodles, I can't score this reviews higher than 2.25 Stars in light of these significant service issues, the below average wings and the average egg rolls. I had really hoped for better because I am not aware of many restaurants with Laotian cooking influences. read more

This place is a hole in the wall. So much flavor in the Pho! This is one of those restaurants you add into your rotation, definitely my favorite spot to grab pho on a rainy day. The owner and "mama" are very friendly! We always feel welcomed when we come in. read more

First time visiting this little spot. Was recommended by my girlfriend's sister. It was a nice, quaint restaurant. Inside looked clean and really like the Lao decorations. Now for the food. It was ok. My girlfriend is Lao and she cooks Lao food and it's really good. So my expectations were already high. Ordered the beef jerky will sticky rice. And my son had chicken wings with rice. My girlfriend had the Kia Mee if correct. The sticky rice was very good. Not too sticky at all but cooked perfectly. The chicken wings were pretty good. Nicely seasoned and fried. The beef jerky was not good. It wasn't hot and it tasted just meh. Oh, also they didn't have peanut sauce which was disappointing. We did order the fried egg rolls and those were really good. As a half Laotian and Cambodian person, I find it difficult to find good Lao or Cambodian food that tastes like home while I'm away at school. This place is THE best Lao food I have ever had at a restaurant!! If I could give ten stars I would. The service was amazing as well, everyone was so kind, especially the chef. This was the first time my boyfriend and his sister had tried Lao food as well and they both loved it. We ordered the ladna, thum mak hoong, khaopoon nam kai, laab sein, and lao sausage. Another great take-out lunch here today, choosing Saturday so we could try the soul food plate (see image). Today the options for meat were the BBQ chicken or a glazed salmon and he sides were any two of candied yams, green beans or mac and cheese. We got the chicken, beans and yams and t also came with cornbread. The chicken was super tender and the glaze flavorful. It included two large chicken legs so more than enough. It came over rice which nicely absorbed the extra glaze. Beans were nice and tender. We also had our usual papaya salad - mild this time - and wing dings. Decided to pick up dinner from here when I was in the area a little while ago. There wasn't too much information online, so I had to make sure they were open first. Once there, we ordered several things off their menu since we were ordering for our family - pad thai, papaya salad, chicken pad kee mao, etc. I think they only have soul food on the weekends, so the fiancé got their soul food plate as well. It took a little while for our order to get ready, but we didn't mind waiting as the people running the restaurant were very friendly and warm. The vegetable dish I got was pretty good, and their papaya salad was decently spicy, even when mild. Admittedly, I'm not as familiar with Lao food, but the food here was pretty good. My fiancé loved their soul food, and I did get to try his mac n cheese, which was delicious. The Lao portion of the food is good but sone of the stuff is not Lao food at all like Spring Rolls, Egg Rolls, Pho is all Vietnamese food. Its not a fully authentic restaurant specializing in Lao cuisine but more of a fusion type restaurant. WOW - that was one of the best eating experiences I've had in so long. The food here is AMAZING. So fresh, so flavorful, so so good. This is an entirely family run business - lovely mother / daughter team who serve their grandmothers recipes and provide such a sweet community vibe. The wife loves Laos and food, so when she suggested this place, it looked perfect. Yelp has it tagged as closed, but it wasn't very closed when we went there on Thursday, and again on Monday, because the food was so good the first time around. We were lucky on Monday. There was a special treat, Laotian sausages. There's so much work to make, that they don't often offer them. They were out of this world. This place is a hidden gem on Page Blvd. It is not a place for those who don't how to experience spice or authentic Lao/Thai flavors ! The papaya salad is .. literally. If you want a delicious, fully flavored adventure with heat, this is the dish to try, crybaby style. The pad thai and the kua mee are hands down the best noodles to try if you're a novice to Lao/Thai cuisine. But the chicken wings and the eggs rolls are just as amazing. The food here is great! Staff is very down to earth and friendly. They greet you and make you feel like family the moment you walk in. The chicken wings with sticky rice and Thum Mak Hoong (papaya salad) are a great trio. If you like a lot of spice you can go cry baby hot or mild for those who can't handle too much spice. For cold New England days you can't go wrong with a nice hot bowl of pho to warm your soul. You can pick your choice of meat; beef, chicken, shrimp, or seafood. My preference is beef. I don't typically leave reviews anywhere, and I'm very particular about where I choose to eat especially when it comes to Asian cuisine. That being said, I have to say this place serves some really great tasting stuff. I've tried the Pho, The vegetable and chicken eggrolls, the kua khao, Jurn kai chicken, mee mama noodles, and the Tom yum koong. Very much enjoyed their food today, far and above the Asian offerings in this area. We had the Ladna Trio (my favorite) and Nam Khao (my husbands favorite). We also got the pad Thai and it was decent though more mild in flavor. We did squeeze a lime which did make it better. Next time, we'll ask for more sauce.
