We stopped in for Saturday lunch to satisfy our BBQ craving since we're just in Texas for the weekend. Soulmans was a great choice. I had a chopped beef stuffed baked potato and it was so huge that am taking home more than half for dinner. My husband had a chopped beef sandwich and they have more than your average sides to choose from, including some mac'n cheese, mashed potatoes, along with the standard beans, cole slaw, and potato salad. Of course, what better way to finish off your plate of BBQ than with some banana pudding, which was also very tasty Everything was delicious and the staff was very friendly, outgoing and service-oriented. For my husband's 50th birthday party, Soulman's BBQ catered it. The delivery driver was very professional and prompt. The food was delicious and there were NO COMPLAINTS, ALL COMPLIMENTS. I like Soulman's. Is it as good as Off the Bone BBQ or Longoria's? No. But it's easy to get to, is relatively inexpensive and is pretty consistent. I really like the loaded baked potato with chopped brisket. The brisket is really good. It's moist, lean (with just enough fat) and is seasoned well. The chicken is hit or miss. If you get it early it's good but sometimes it's dry, maybe because it has sat under the heat lamp too long. The sausage is also pretty good. Not the best, but worthy of the $ spent. The ribs were also hit or miss for me. One of my ribs was really good. One of them was a bit dry, though, almost as if it was too hot in one area of the smoker. The sides are pretty good as well. I don't have any legit complaints about the sides. They aren't special but they compliment everything well. The deserts are where I really am left desiring more. The banana pudding needs some work. It was too soggy and didn't look really appetizing. The cobbler was the same way. The crust was just too soggy. I like some crispness to my cobblers. As far as service, the guys working the shop are really nice and eager to please. They don't skimp you on meat and are quick about getting people through the line. Overall, this is a good after church spot or lunch spot. Nothing major to complain about. It's good, solid BBQ. Could be better, but I've also had a lot worse in the area. I was there today and lets just say this place is nothing special, I had the baked potato with meat (was decent for the $) had an order of okra (I've made much better tasting okra myself) and a side of macaroni & cheese, I had to keep adding salt & pepper to everything every minute, my son even said if I'd add more salt I'd end up having a heart attack, I told him I wouldn't have to add so much salt if the food wasn't so tasteless... My son had the sliced beef sandwich (which was so small) and mashed potatoes and he had the same tasteless experience. I was planing on getting the bbq ribs but if they can't even get the small stuff right then I rather spend my money at a place that actually has tasty food. Finally, a coworker came in with food that looked pretty good. She enjoyed it and said she'd be back. So of course that gave me the courage to try it. I'm very picky about my food and don't like to waste my money. I to had a good experience. I've been twice, ordered the chopped brisket sandwich both times. The sweet BBQ sauce is tasty. Tried the apple pie and the potato salad and I thought both were pretty good. Cole slaw wasn't good but I don't like coleslaw from anywhere except KFC. Customer service was great as well. I got a 1/2 slab rib plate, and it was delicious! My grandmother enjoyed every bit of her plate and the ribs had plenty of meat on them. Went into Soulman's for the first time tonight. Have been wanting to try it for a while now. The "God is Great" sign is what drew me to it. With BBQ restaurants a dime a dozen in Dallas it's hard to know what is good and worth the money. We really enjoyed Soulman's. The Brisket was moist and smokey, the Turkey was AMAZING. The chicken was a little dry but still full of flavor. The Mac and Cheese was a hit with the two little ones I had in tow. The staff was outgoing, friendly, and welcoming. I've eaten here twice now, and I'm even more disappointed that Big Mike retired and Longhorn BBQ closed. The first time I had the chopped beef sandwich with macaroni and cheese and green beans. The beef was ok, if a bit dry, the green beans a bit greasy and the mac n cheese sadly tasteless. The second time, which was last night, I had chopped smoked pork with green beans and potato salad. Again, the pork was dry and filled with too much fat. The green beans were greasy, and the potato salad tasted like vinegar. I'm sad to say this place is really disappointing, especially considering the prices here. Mr. Soulman is REALLY proud of his food. So I have avoided trying this place since Longhorn just closed and never reopened several years ago. I grew up eating that BBQ. I just knew it wouldn't be the same. I decided I should give it a fair shake. To be honest. It's good. It's no Longhorn. But it's good. I got a BBQ baked potato with brisket. It's a good size and they do load it up. Brisket was moist and tender. Their BBQ sauce is good. I also had some Buttermilk Pie. And that was great. It tastes like my grandmas'. Reminds me of my childhood. The staff are nice and friendly. We frequent the Soulman's in Mansfield so when we were in Cedar Hill, hungry and looking for a place, we saw Soulman's. Since we like the one in Mansfield, we ASSUMED this one would be the same......IT WASN'T. The service was completely sorry, the food was cold, and it tasted awful. They had the music so loud that I couldn't hear anything they were asking me. They actually had the audacity to look perturbed because I had to ask them to repeat themselves again and again. The only thing that is marginally good to come out of this restaurant is the baked potato. Im a sucker for good stuffed potatoes, and the double barrel is a nice try. It will do in a pinch. I am sorry to be writing a bad review for an establishment that espouses Christian values. But the problems with their BBQ cannot be ignored. As some other reviewers have mentioned, Soulman's is pretty "proud" of their fare. The brisket is marginal, the sausage is ok, the sauce leaves a lot to be desired. The beans are good, the mashed potatoes taste like they started from a box, and the mac and cheese is suited for toddlers who don't have very developed palates. The "soul bowl" is an almost direct try to replicate gut packs from Vitek's in Waco. I mentioned being proud? 4" sandwich, one side and a drink for almost 9 bucks? Maybe if it were BBQ that were rated tops in the state or something, but I could probably do better on my home pit or my oven than what is coming off the line at Cedar Hill Soulman's (and usually do). Cedar Hill is screaming for a good BBQ place, but at this current time, Soulman's does not fit that bill. read more

I made a large purchase today. There were some mistakes I noticed later. We received 2 1/2 pounds of meat instead of the 2 pounds we ordered. The problem was that we received some wrong meat. As usual the food was great and no one in our group was really upset. Everyone makes mistakes! I gave 4 stars because of what happened when I reported the mistake. The manager (I failed to get his name) cor-rected the mistake immediately. He seemed willing to have the correct meats delivered to my house. One of our party was running late and was able to drop by Soulman's and pick up the order which was ready ap-proximately 5 minutes after I called. I have eaten numerous times at Soulman's over the last few years and the food has always been excellent. This is the first time I have ever had a problem with an order. They have fairly decent barbecue, but everything else is hit or miss. For example, the loaded baked potatoes. They're pretty standard, and round out a meal fairly well. They could do a better job of dressing them up (would it kill you guys to offer some chives and REAL butter?!). The mac and cheese is okay-ish, depending on how you like it. It's too salty for my tastes. The banana pudding is horrible. It's mushed together, has an old, chemical taste, and doesn't at all resemble banana pudding. I usually judge BBQ places based on their banana pudding, and well, this place falls way short. The service is okay, too. I might go back when I'm in town again, but just for the barbecue. There are only a few options for BBQ in Cedar Hill so this is definitely one that you want to try out if in town. They are constantly running good lunch specials which is what brought me in today. I think Soulmans has pretty good food for a "fastfood" type BBQ joint. The attentiveness to customers and the ability to get your order correct is a different story. I purchased 65 dollars worth of food and took it home. The 1/2 pound of pulled pork looked like enough to make 1 sandwich. Perhaps they were about to run out of pork, I guess that's what happens when you don't watch them. The beef and sausage appeared to be a fair amount. The biggest issue I had was they didn't give me any sauce at all. I called and they offered for me to drive back and pick it up, when I declined the manager said, " we'll get you next time." HA! How do you plan to do that? You didn't ask my name not offer yours. At least the guy who answered the phone told me his name was Brice. I loved the potato salad and fried okra. Also, excellent customer service. I didnt like that the chopped beef was so fatty. I was spitting out big chunks, and was not pleased. There are a couple of techniques to reduce that in chopped beef, but some places keep it in, as it creates more volume, and thus... cheaper food production costs.
