I don't normally write reviews this long, but after our experience at Soulman's Bar-B-Que, I felt like they deserved more than just five stars and a couple of sentences saying, "Great barbecue." From the moment we walked in, I was impressed. The first thing I noticed was how incredibly clean and well maintained the restaurant was. Everything looked fresh, organized and cared for. The dining area was spotless, the tables were clean, the serving area looked great, and even the bathrooms were exceptionally clean. That may seem like a small detail, but I've always believed the condition of a restaurant -- especially its bathrooms -- tells you a lot about the pride people take in running the place. Soulman's clearly takes that seriously. Now, let's talk about the food. The chopped brisket was absolutely incredible. Seriously, this was some delicious Texas barbecue. The brisket was tender, juicy, smoky and full of flavor. It tasted incredibly fresh and had that wonderful combination of smoke, seasoning and richness that makes you remember why brisket is the king of Texas barbecue in the first place. Then you add Soulman's barbecue sauce, and it gets even better. The sauce was fantastic -- just the right balance of sweet, tangy and smoky without covering up the flavor of the meat. I'm pretty sure I used considerably more barbecue sauce than any reasonable person actually needs, but I regret nothing. The chopped brisket with that sauce was worth the trip by itself. But the rest of the meal absolutely held its own. The sides were excellent. Everything tasted fresh and flavorful and, most importantly, like somebody actually cared about what was being put on the plate. At some barbecue restaurants, the meat gets all the attention and the sides feel like an obligation. That definitely wasn't the case here. The entire plate was good from beginning to end. And then there was the sweet tea. If you're going to serve barbecue in Texas, you'd better know how to make a good glass of sweet tea. Soulman's does. Cold, refreshing and properly sweet, it was exactly what you want sitting next to a big plate of chopped brisket, barbecue sauce and sides. And just when you think you're finished, there's the ice cream. I love this. There is something wonderfully simple about finishing a great barbecue meal and then getting some ice cream. After brisket, sides and sweet tea, that little bit of ice cream was the perfect ending. It's one of those small touches that turns a good lunch or dinner into an experience you remember. Another thing that really stood out was the freshness of everything. Nothing tasted like it had been sitting around. The brisket tasted fresh, the sides tasted fresh, the tea was fresh, and the restaurant itself looked and felt fresh and clean. There are certainly plenty of barbecue restaurants in Texas, so the competition is pretty serious. You can find brisket almost anywhere. But what separates a really good barbecue restaurant from an average one is getting the entire experience right. Great meat. Great sauce. Good sides. Cold sweet tea. A clean dining room. Clean bathrooms. Fresh food. And something sweet at the end. Soulman's checked every one of those boxes for us. The only unpleasant part of the entire visit had absolutely nothing to do with Soulman's. A group of customers walked in behind us with a very strong smell of marijuana, which unfortunately was pretty noticeable while we were trying to enjoy our meal. I want to be very clear, however, that this was not the restaurant's fault and doesn't change my opinion of Soulman's whatsoever. It was simply an unfortunate circumstance involving other customers and completely outside the restaurant's control. In fact, it almost made the contrast more noticeable because Soulman's itself was so exceptionally clean and well maintained. I have to come back one more time to that chopped brisket because it really was the star of the show. Tender, smoky, moist, flavorful and absolutely delicious. Put some of Soulman's barbecue sauce over it, grab a fork and forget whatever diet you thought you were on when you walked through the door. This was simply a terrific Texas barbecue meal from beginning to end. Fantastic chopped brisket. Delicious barbecue sauce. Great sides. Excellent sweet tea. Ice cream to finish it off. Fresh food. Spotless dining area. Spotless bathrooms. Everything was clean, organized and obviously well cared for. You can tell when a restaurant is being run by people who take pride in what they do, and that was my impression of Soulman's. Soulman's Bar-B-Que reminded me of what a good Texas barbecue restaurant is supposed to be: uncomplicated, delicious food served fresh in a clean, comfortable environment. We thoroughly enjoyed it, and I will absolutely be back. read more

The restaurant sits off the interstate so it's a lot going on in the area, but it is a good restaurant. The service was good, not a long wait. read more

I'm not sure why this restaurant is rated 3.5 stars, they're food, service and ambience are great. I have tried their Soulman's Sandwich with sliced Brisket and it is delicious with their spicy barbecue sauce, tender meat and the hoagie bread. This place has to be under new management or something. I've been ordering a baked potato stuffed your way every few weeks for years, and never--not once--have I gotten so much pushback for asking for extra butter, sour cream, cheese, or bacon. I was told that if I wanted more, it would cost an extra $1. I can understand charging for extra bacon, but extra butter, sour cream, and especially cheese? I'm paying almost $10 for a potato and don't even get enough butter to make it to the bottom. There's barely enough cheese to cover the top, let alone flavor the whole potato. By the time you get halfway through, you're just eating a plain baked potato. The employee even told me, "Well, they've been doing it wrong." So they've been doing it wrong... for years? Or maybe the new policy is what's wrong. This is exactly how businesses lose loyal customers. Don't change what made people keep coming back and expect them to be happy about it. I've attached a photo of my sad potato (not even stuffed "my way") so you can see how little was put on it. The good news? I didn't have to search very hard for a new potato spot--I already found one. And it's less than a mile further. read more

Some authentic Texas BBQ Walking distance from the Pilot Truck stop. If any truckers are looking for a good meal in the area I'd definitely recommend checking this spot out. Ribs fell right off the bone and the chicken was seasoned to perfection. Wasn't a big fan of the brisket or potatoes but the Mac and cheese and Texas toast saved the day. Always love Soulmans! Great staff, super friendly and helpful, great specials and options for all price ranges. We got thr double barrel baked potato with brisket and the 2 meat plates woth turkey, brisket, coleslaw, and ranchero beans. Bathrooms were clean ans stocked, it had plenty of seating, and a plus I wasnt expecting- soft serve was available for free (with purchase of course)!! I sent my daughter to the Lancaster location for me. I ordered the Out of Sight which is a 6 inch sandwich and 2 six ounce sides of your choice. I ordered the chopped brisket sandwich and potato salad and coleslaw. The brisket looked like mush had no flavor and was barely any on the bun ( which was small to begin with). It didn't look like brisket nor did it taste like it had been on a grill. The potato salad was so sour it had to be made with dill pickles and mustard. The slaw was just as sour and it was dry. I tried to eat but I just couldn't. I ended up throwing 3/4 of the meal in the trash! The best thing was the original barbecue sauce. I'm really upset about this, as I've been worrying my daughter for a month about eating here. I will not try this again. read more

I spend $54 at this place. One of the worst tasting barbecues I've ever had in my life. The brisket has no taste whatsoever. No salt, no pepper, no nothing. No benefit to ordering early food was meh. I placed a larger order for a holiday gathering days in advance. I then received a call 30 minutes before pickup telling they were out of French Fries and Texas Toast. I asked how they ran out of food with such a large notice, only to be told their system prints all the tickets just before pickup time. The meats were fantastic as always, the sides were lacking. The buns I ordered were carelessly thrown into a paper bag with half of them being damaged in the process. Yelp 100 Challenge 2018: 93/100 This Soulman's BBQ is located near the industrial area of Dallas. Lots of manufacturing workers coming here for lunch, and this is the perfect place to grab a quick lunch! You line up immediately to the right of the front door to get food. I opted for the meat plates (you can choose multiple meats depending on what you want), and I ordered the brisket since I love a good Texan dry-rub brisket! You then pick out whatever sides you want from the cafeteria style trays, and pay at the end of the line. You seat yourself at the tables available, and be ready to be joined by strangers as they are large tables and this place fills up around lunch time. I really like that the sliced brisket was very thinly sliced. The slices that I got was perfectly balanced between having fat and not TOO much, the thin slices also helped with some of the drier side of the meat, since it's thinly sliced I didn't find it so bad. There's also an ice cream machine by the bathroom near the soda fountain, which was a cherry on top for this meal. Like other reviews, this is definitely not the best BBQ around town. But if you're in the area in and want a quick fix of Texan BBQ, this location is the place to go! read more

I ordered a 2 meat bbq plate with ribs, beef brisket, mashed potatoes, and mac 'n cheese. The brisket was excellent and the ribs were just as good. The sides were just okay, though. I don't think the mac 'n cheese is homemade, but I've been wrong before. The best thing about this meal, and keep in mind that the meats were both really good, was the bbq sauce. I just had the best bbq sauce I've ever had in a restaurant. I normally just taste the bbq sauce and then set it aside, but I put this bbq sauce on every ounce of my brisket. Perfect in every way. Brisket is soft , unlike those other bbq chains that sell tree bark with sauce. Their sauce it rich and delicious unlike the other places (Sonny Bryan's and Dickeys) that, for some reason, make their regular sauce spicy. Why? We LOVE Soulman's BBQ!!!!!! Mac-n-cheese is excellent, and compared to Heims BBQ, there is no comparison. Heims is awful and over priced. Was in the area for work, stopped in on a whim. Got a two meat platter, beef and pulled pork with two sides-these southwest beans and Mac and cheese. The beef was so good! Sliced nice and thin, smoky and was extra tasty piled on the bread and dunked in their bbq sauce. Pulled pork was flavorful, but had to dig through it to avoid big fatty pieces...assuming they don't take off the extra fat in Texas bbq (no worries, I just hate it). The Mac and cheese wasn't my favorite and there beans were a bit spicy, should have gotten cole slaw instead but I'd so go back. $16.00 and took more than half to go. Very pleased! read more

The bbq at Soulman's isnt special. The meat was average, not horrible, not great. My real issue is with the sides. Now I am not a guy who usually cares about sides when it comes to BBQ, but this place specifically chose prepackaged cheap sides that seem to be an after thought to the meal. Their motto was something like we don't skimp on the meat, but I went to another BBQ the following night and got 1/3 more meat for about the same price, and it tasted better. I can see how people like this place, it has a diner feel, quick served, meat was okay, didn't have a huge smoke flavor but some people like that.
