One of the few famous BBQ places I had not tried in the two years I have lived here. (Side note: this is ALWAYS a great place to stop for a bathroom break when you are visiting the Bishop Arts District.) We came in for a snack and, of course, left completely full. My friend absolutely loved the burnt ends. He liked them so much that after we finished the first order, he went back and got a second one, plus some brisket and elote. I thought everything was good, but I will say the menu felt a little limited. This is definitely one of those places where I am glad I finally tried it because it is part of the local DFW BBQ experience, but it is probably not somewhere I would specifically seek out again. Hey Lockhart Smokehouse! (And I'm curious WHY you are called Lockhart - 'cause I used to live in Austin, TX, and going to Lockhart for BBQ was one of our favorite Friday afternoon excursions...) The vibe in this place is really great. The people are friendly. Downtown Plano is cool. The restaurant and bar area are clean, well-attended, and the food and drink are all good. So why only 3-stars? To be fair, I came here on a weeknight around 6:30pm, which is not the best way to judge a BBQ place. I will try to come back on a Friday at lunch time, and I hope things will be epic. Bottom line, I wasn't blown away by the meats! They were well cooked, but the flavor just didn't impress. The Sause (sorry, I'm a Rudy's loyalist) was tasty, but didn't blow my mind. A nice sweet + smoky flavor that worked better with the Spare Ribs than the Brisket. My husband and I had plans to eat somewhere else, but when we walked by this spot, I had to stop in to try some brisket. Along with our brisket, we also tried their Spicy Mac 'N Cheese, and Bacon wrapped Jalapeño. The jalapeño was far too spicy for me. I'm not a big fan of the Velveeta style mac and cheese in Texas, but theirs was one of the better ones I had on my trip. The spice was a nice addition. The brisket was obviously the star of the show. When in Texas, you have to get BBQ, and I'm very glad I was introduced to Lockhart Smokehouse in the Bishop Arts District. The neighborhood itself is a great bonus. It's walkable, full of shops, and makes for a really fun area to spend some time before or after eating. But the reason you're here is the BBQ, and it delivers. The brisket was the star for me. Super tender, full of flavor, and exactly what you want from Texas BBQ. The ribs were just as good, fall-off-the-bone and well seasoned. The pulled pork was also really solid. The brisket deviled eggs were okay, but I like regular deviled eggs a lot better. I put the leftovers in the fridge and they did not keep well at all. Eat them when you buy them. So, the mac & cheese... when I took a bite, I was thinking "Not bad... pretty good. No better than at most places". Then, that little spicy kick hit. There, we got their weekly special, which was a brisket pastrami, their brisket, as well as some baked beans and mac & cheese. The mac & cheese was very standard. It wasn't anything special. The baked beans were all good but again nothing special The really neat dish that they offered which was the brisket pastrami was really tender and it's more so of a marinated brisket and there isn't really much of a pastrami vibe except for its vibrant pinkish color. The deviled eggs were so good. I have never seen brisket flavored deviled eggs and these were amazing. The beans were also great. I ordered a quarter pound brisket and it was enough for me. Deep flavor in the crust, big globes of delicious fat, and super juicy soft medium rare meat. Turkey was super moist and a white meat cut - so that's always impressive. Pork ribs were good, not great. I have yet to find pork ribs the way I like them in the 20+ Texas bbq spots I've been. I hesitated between 4 and 5 stars, but the in-house bbq sauce was amazing and the service was probably the friendliest I can recall at a bbq place in quite some time. There are 2 entrances and you walk to the back to order and receive your food and can grab a table after you order. There is also a full bar. Ordering and receiving the food was pretty quick. They slice up your portions as you order. The brisket was a little fatty, the ribs were a little salty and the potato salad was a little tangy. My husband loved his 1/2 chicken. It is a nice option to be able to order a drink if you want. You can grab silverware and condiments from the island in the middle of the restaurant.
