I was pleasantly surprised by my recent visit. This was only my second time here. The first being about 15 years ago when I initially moved to Dallas. During lunch, I ordered the smoked turkey and also sampled the sliced brisket. Both were excellent, and I realized I've been overlooking this spot. The staff was friendly, welcoming, and happy to offer samples before ordering, which I appreciated. The atmosphere is well-suited for enjoying quality barbecue with good company. When in Texas, you have to get BBQ, and I'm very glad I was introduced to Lockhart Smokehouse in the Bishop Arts District. The neighborhood itself is a great bonus. It's walkable, full of shops, and makes for a really fun area to spend some time before or after eating. But the reason you're here is the BBQ, and it delivers. The brisket was the star for me. Super tender, full of flavor, and exactly what you want from Texas BBQ. The ribs were just as good, fall-off-the-bone and well seasoned. The pulled pork was also really solid. My husband and I had plans to eat somewhere else, but when we walked by this spot, I had to stop in to try some brisket. Along with our brisket, we also tried their Spicy Mac 'N Cheese, and Bacon wrapped Jalapeño. The jalapeño was far too spicy for me. I'm not a big fan of the Velveeta style mac and cheese in Texas, but theirs was one of the better ones I had on my trip. The spice was a nice addition. The brisket was obviously the star of the show. The brisket deviled eggs were okay, but I like regular deviled eggs a lot better. I put the leftovers in the fridge and they did not keep well at all. Eat them when you buy them. So, the mac & cheese... when I took a bite, I was thinking "Not bad... pretty good. No better than at most places". Then, that little spicy kick hit. There, we got their weekly special, which was a brisket pastrami, their brisket, as well as some baked beans and mac & cheese. The mac & cheese was very standard. It wasn't anything special. The baked beans were all good but again nothing special The really neat dish that they offered which was the brisket pastrami was really tender and it's more so of a marinated brisket and there isn't really much of a pastrami vibe except for its vibrant pinkish color. The brisket was very tender, but a bit too fatty in some spots. Still, very soft and it just falls apart really well. Nice staff and quick service. The deviled eggs were so good. I have never seen brisket flavored deviled eggs and these were amazing. The beans were also great. I ordered a quarter pound brisket and it was enough for me. The meat was awesome and the blue cheese coleslaw was slap yo mama' good! The prime rib (seasonal) was a standout star. Deep flavor in the crust, big globes of delicious fat, and super juicy soft medium rare meat. Turkey was super moist and a white meat cut - so that's always impressive. Pork ribs were good, not great. I have yet to find pork ribs the way I like them in the 20+ Texas bbq spots I've been. Honestly for my first time in Texas I was expecting some great bbq and I heard about this place. It was a little disappointing. The food wasn't the best. The potato salad recipe has changed and the portions are noticeably smaller. The brisket was overcooked, and while two of the four ribs were a solid 10/10, the other two were so tough I couldn't even chew through them. There are 2 entrances and you walk to the back to order and receive your food and can grab a table after you order. There is also a full bar. Ordering and receiving the food was pretty quick. I'm new in town, and I'm putting the overpriced subpar restaurants in Bishop Arts on notice: You will be reviewed. I gush over the great ones and I am vicious when I come across a pretender. Just because you're in a cool area doesn't mean you can overcharge people for subpar food. Call me picky, but I've had great barbecue in the Carolinas, Kansas City, and Atlanta and I also make my own. This was not as good and really overpriced. I barely escaped with half a pound of ribs and half a pound of brisket and one side of coleslaw. No drink and to go. Include the semi-mandatory tip (even though I was not waited on) and it was over 50 bucks. It's barely enough food to feed two people. Their ribs were dry, lacked flavor. The barbecue sauce was really tart and did not taste like barbecue sauce. I don't know what they are trying to do with it. I make my own barbecue sauce from scratch and I'll be happy to share my recipe. This was not good. The only highlight was the brisket, juicy with a nice bark. Do better. We were originally looking at a couple other places but one was closed and the other further away than we felt like going. I'm so glad we landed here.
