Late post but First time here as we were visiting the area. Few parking spots for the business so that was convenient. Service was good and we got our food pretty quick. Food was tasty and if we lived in this area, it would be a go to spot.

I ordered a barbecue baked potato with chopped beef, and it was packed with flavor and very satisfying. The customer service was great, and the restaurant was nice and welcoming, with awards on display that show they have earned recognition for some of the best barbecue around.

I was in town for my OTR 34 hour reset and craving barbecue. I was looking for a specific looking sausage link and Smokey Joe's photos looked like what I wanted. I stopped by Smokey Joe's hoping to see what the hype was about, and honestly...I walked out more disappointed than full. My total came out to nearly $54 for one person -- a two-meat plate, two sides, drink, and a slice of sweet potato pie. For comparison, I can get a hefty three-meat plate for under $30 at some of the best BBQ spots in Houston, so expectations were high. The food? Sausage: Looked great but tasted like summer sausage -- not my favorite profile. Brisket: The best part of the meats. Nice bark, good fat content (I forgot to ask for lean), solid but not mind-blowing. Mac & Cheese: Surprisingly the highlight. Black pepper and garlic gave it a unique kick worth noting. Green Beans: Never arrived, and I didn't realize until I was already heading out. I'd already waited around 15 minutes for fresh mac & cheese, so I wasn't going back to ask. Sweet Potato Pie: Big letdown. Heavy on cinnamon/spices, and the crust was noticeably salty. They had a steady stream of older customers coming in, which makes me think nostalgia might be the real star here -- because the price didn't match the experience. Bottom line: Been there, done that. Won't do it again or recommend.

Anytime I make a trip through Texas, I am eager to stop and get another stamp in my Texas Monthly passport. The afternoon drive to Dallas brought me to the longstanding Smokey Joe's BBQ in south Dallas. Located right off I-35, Smokey Joe's is prime real estate and was one of the easier BBQ joints to travel to based on its simple location. As I stepped inside, it was obvious how important Smokey Joe's is to this part of Dallas. There was a small line of people talking as neighbors and friends. I noticed an older gentleman leaving who ran into another older gentleman and immediately told him what to order to make sure he was getting the best of what Smokey Joe's had to offer. My rookie mistake of not heading to Dallas until late meant I arrived after 5:00 and the menu was already slightly sold out. They were tragically out of sliced brisket. I got chopped brisket instead, and since the sliced was already gone, I knew it would be a little drier than usual. It is what it is. As I got to the counter to order and get my stamp, the employee was surprised to see how many stamps I had accumulated already. She was super helpful and very sweet. The one downside as just one guy is that you can only order a half pound as the smallest portion for all the meats, so be prepared for that. The overall atmosphere was pretty nice. They were bumping early 2000s R&B inside the dining room from Alicia Keys to Jennifer Hudson, and the Texas Tech game I wanted to watch was on their big TV, so it was a perfect dining experience. I will write briefly about everything I tried: Chopped Brisket: It was chopped brisket. You really can't judge a brisket once it's chopped. It was good with the sauce and the provided brioche bun basically making a chopped brisket sandwich, but it wasn't special on its own. I want to go back and try some of their sliced brisket in the future. Signature Sausage: A solid jalapeño cheese sausage with cheese oozing in every bite. Loved how meaty and crisp every bite was. Mac and Cheese: This is the type of mac and cheese that makes you think of Thanksgiving and yearn for a quart to take back home with you. It was peppery and brought me back to when I was eight years old. I felt like that dude from Ratatouille. Sweet Potato Casserole: I am a recent fan of sweet potato casserole, and I love a side that is secretly just a dessert. Smokey Joe's is not making white people sides. These are on a whole separate level in the side game. Truly next level stuff. I am hopeful to return to give Smokey Joe's another chance and try more of their meats and eat more sides. Historic side game at Smokey Joe's. I felt like I had just been fully welcomed into a cookout. This is a dream come true. RIYL: The most honest BBQ you can get

I went to Smokey Joe's for the first time recently and had a great experience! The brisket was tender and flavorful, and it had a good amount of bark on the outside. We also tried the brisket boudin and jalapeño cheddar sausages, and both were good but I think I preferred the texture of the jalapeño cheddar sausage. The mac & cheese was creamy with some pepper added in. I think what surprised me the most was the Frito pie, which I thought might be too much, but it actually had a great balance of flavors. The crispiness of the Fritos went really well with the brisket and the soft beans and cheese on top. I would get that again if we went back. At BBQ places I usually get banana pudding, and the one here was one of the best versions I've had. The inside of the restaurant is fairly small, but it wasn't too crowded when we were there on a Thursday night. I could see this also being a good place to get takeout from!

Excellent ribs and brisket. Sweet potato casserole, tasty, sweet and loved the candied nuts. Barbecue sauce was unique in that it was a strong tomato flavor rather than sweet. Very friendly staff.

I just want to start by saying this place was delicious. I had the ribs, the brisket and the Boudin. As you can see in the picture, everything was fresh and delicious. I absolutely love the brisket and ribs. They were some of the best I've had here in Dallas and I devoured it. I really like the age mac & cheese the cheese was great and I will definitely be back. My boyfriend recommended this after I got him a facial for Christmas and I am so happy that he did.

"When the Queen of Side Dishes calls, Uncle Sean answers with brisket." TL;DR: Fourteen stamps in, Smokey Joe's delivered a knockout combo of brisket, sausage, a Texas Twinkie, sweet sides, and banana pudding that had me hollering "hallelujah" before I even opened the to-go box. The scene was set late on a Friday. My wife, the Side Dish Queen herself, declared that the kitchen was closed. No time for questions, only action. I fired up the truck and made my way to Smokey Joe's BBQ, the next notch on my Texas Monthly Top 50 belt. Walking in, the aroma hit me like a mesquite-powered freight train. The chalkboards promised beef ribs and Texas Twinkies, and I wasn't about to leave without one of those bacon-wrapped, stuffed, jalapeño blessings. I ordered brisket with a bark darker than midnight in Big Bend, sausage with just the right snap, and that Texas Twinkie that winked at me from the tray. For sides, I scooped up green beans and sweet potato casserole because the Queen would revolt if I came home without her greens and something sweet. Banana pudding rode shotgun on the drive home, the real MVP waiting for dessert time. We spread it all out on the table, and Smokey Joe's delivered a Texas-sized flavor rodeo. The brisket was tender enough to make a grown man question his loyalties, the sausage had that peppery kick I love, and the Texas Twinkie? A one-bite miracle that should come with a warning label. The sides were royal-approved, and the banana pudding vanished faster than free beer on a hot day. Fourteen stamps down, thirty-six more to go on this quest of smoked glory. Final Dad Line: Brisket this good should be illegal, but I'm glad Texas keeps it just below felony level.

Had takeout, but was unable to eat it immediately. It was lukewarm when I tried it, but it was still really good. Everything was super flavorful without being salty. And that brisket was the most moist, juiciest, I have ever had, ever! The catfish wasn't muddled or mushy like catfish can sometimes be, even though it was room temperature. If I'm ever back in Dallas I would get the brisket again and again!

    Kevin T.

Wow this place has some good bbq! I came in to get a togo order and the cashier was very nice, the food came out fast and when I took it back to work it was still hot!! Price is a little high but you get a lot of food for $33

Beef Ribs: These were the star of the show. They were incredibly tender, melting off the bone with deep, complex flavors that set a high bar for BBQ. Brisket: While still high-quality, I found the brisket in Austin to have better meat to fat ratio. The Dallas version was good, but it didn't quite hit the same heights as the Austin achieved earlier in our trip. Even with the slight variation in the brisket, Terry Black's remains a standout. The combination of fantastic beef ribs, a great vibe, and reliable service makes it a must-visit. We are already looking forward to our next visit!

To that one guy in the reviews who said that "the trough" will require at least 4 grown men, he was correct. I think this is a good amount for 4 men (without feeling absolutely disgusted from all this fatty deliciousness). The trough comes with 1 pound of brisket (5ish), 1 pound of beef ribs, 1 pound of pork ribs (5ish), 1/2 pound of pulled pork, 2 hand made sausage links, and 2 sides along with raw onions and pickles. The brisket is so good. Melt in your mouth. Make sure you get to try some of the leaner and fatty portions of it. The beef ribs are also perfect. It was Smokey, fatty, and fall off the bone just by touching it. I also very much enjoyed the sausages. The jalapeño cheddar and the maverick sausage (hatch chilis, cilantro, and queso Oxana, amazing) were so good. The Mac and cheese and collared greens were very good. Did not get the try the other sides. The bbq sauce was also very tangy and the brisket sauce? (I think?) is also a little acidic and a perfect pairing. There is an indoors eating area (AC blasting), but also an outside area with benches. The service is great and fast

A few items were sold out on my most recent visit (my fault I arrived at 6:45) and the staff weren't aware of what was available, leading to some confusion, but they were so nice it didn't impact my meal. 1 Star. Food - By now, you've probably read or heard about Kafi's Wagyu Brisket. For me, I love following @kafibbq on Instagram so I can see what Salahodeen is cooking up. On this visit, it was the Brisket Sandwich. First off, the house baked bread roll is soft, but firm enough to hold Kafi's famous brisket on a pile of home made cole slaw and pickles. It was a special, and I'm not sure if Kafi will keep this on the menu, but I hope they do. 2 Stars. Will I Return? - Yes. It's pricey, but it's worth it. She is freaking awesome Food: 10/10 honestly my favorite bbq joint. From the meats to the sides and drinks. Community tea, so a nice stringer brew i like! Its rare to find a bbq joint that has delicious sides AND delish meats. Yummmmmm When you order sliced brisket they ask if you want moist (with fat) or lean. The poblano sausage (beef) is so good. Try their HG brisket quesadillas!!!! Brisket heavy and excellent for the price. I love all their sides. My fave is the bacon ranch potato salad. Their mac n cheese is really good but not my go to. Their corn mixed with the mac n cheese or potato salad is yummers too Listen, just do yourself a favor and "treat yo self" to Hurtado's. Dont walk, RUN out the door to get there

The Brisket and the sausage were really good. The ribs were a five out of ten in my opinion…read more Mexican Rice was super dry. The Ranch Potato Salad had the texture of mashed potatoes with Ranch Dressing all over it. "Terrible" They also loose a point for selling Pepsi instead of Coke products. Very overpriced for the amount of food you get. Do not recommend this restaurant.
