I was in town for my OTR 34 hour reset and craving barbecue. I was looking for a specific looking sausage link and Smokey Joe's photos looked like what I wanted. I stopped by Smokey Joe's hoping to see what the hype was about, and honestly...I walked out more disappointed than full. My total came out to nearly $54 for one person -- a two-meat plate, two sides, drink, and a slice of sweet potato pie. For comparison, I can get a hefty three-meat plate for under $30 at some of the best BBQ spots in Houston, so expectations were high. The food? Sausage: Looked great but tasted like summer sausage -- not my favorite profile. Brisket: The best part of the meats. Nice bark, good fat content (I forgot to ask for lean), solid but not mind-blowing. Mac & Cheese: Surprisingly the highlight. Black pepper and garlic gave it a unique kick worth noting. Green Beans: Never arrived, and I didn't realize until I was already heading out. I'd already waited around 15 minutes for fresh mac & cheese, so I wasn't going back to ask. Sweet Potato Pie: Big letdown. Heavy on cinnamon/spices, and the crust was noticeably salty. They had a steady stream of older customers coming in, which makes me think nostalgia might be the real star here -- because the price didn't match the experience. Bottom line: Been there, done that. Won't do it again or recommend.

I ordered a barbecue baked potato with chopped beef, and it was packed with flavor and very satisfying. The customer service was great, and the restaurant was nice and welcoming, with awards on display that show they have earned recognition for some of the best barbecue around.

We were traveling from California to Florida, we like to eat at local businesses. This place did not disappoint! The meat was so tender, everything had the perfect amount of seasoning and the sides were delicious! I will dream of this food. I'm so sad I live so far away.

I went to Smokey Joe's for the first time recently and had a great experience! The brisket was tender and flavorful, and it had a good amount of bark on the outside. We also tried the brisket boudin and jalapeño cheddar sausages, and both were good but I think I preferred the texture of the jalapeño cheddar sausage. The mac & cheese was creamy with some pepper added in. I think what surprised me the most was the Frito pie, which I thought might be too much, but it actually had a great balance of flavors. The crispiness of the Fritos went really well with the brisket and the soft beans and cheese on top. I would get that again if we went back. At BBQ places I usually get banana pudding, and the one here was one of the best versions I've had. The inside of the restaurant is fairly small, but it wasn't too crowded when we were there on a Thursday night. I could see this also being a good place to get takeout from!

Excellent ribs and brisket. Sweet potato casserole, tasty, sweet and loved the candied nuts. Barbecue sauce was unique in that it was a strong tomato flavor rather than sweet. Very friendly staff.

I just want to start by saying this place was delicious. I had the ribs, the brisket and the Boudin. As you can see in the picture, everything was fresh and delicious. I absolutely love the brisket and ribs. They were some of the best I've had here in Dallas and I devoured it. I really like the age mac & cheese the cheese was great and I will definitely be back. My boyfriend recommended this after I got him a facial for Christmas and I am so happy that he did.

"When the Queen of Side Dishes calls, Uncle Sean answers with brisket." TL;DR: Fourteen stamps in, Smokey Joe's delivered a knockout combo of brisket, sausage, a Texas Twinkie, sweet sides, and banana pudding that had me hollering "hallelujah" before I even opened the to-go box. The scene was set late on a Friday. My wife, the Side Dish Queen herself, declared that the kitchen was closed. No time for questions, only action. I fired up the truck and made my way to Smokey Joe's BBQ, the next notch on my Texas Monthly Top 50 belt. Walking in, the aroma hit me like a mesquite-powered freight train. The chalkboards promised beef ribs and Texas Twinkies, and I wasn't about to leave without one of those bacon-wrapped, stuffed, jalapeño blessings. I ordered brisket with a bark darker than midnight in Big Bend, sausage with just the right snap, and that Texas Twinkie that winked at me from the tray. For sides, I scooped up green beans and sweet potato casserole because the Queen would revolt if I came home without her greens and something sweet. Banana pudding rode shotgun on the drive home, the real MVP waiting for dessert time. We spread it all out on the table, and Smokey Joe's delivered a Texas-sized flavor rodeo. The brisket was tender enough to make a grown man question his loyalties, the sausage had that peppery kick I love, and the Texas Twinkie? A one-bite miracle that should come with a warning label. The sides were royal-approved, and the banana pudding vanished faster than free beer on a hot day. Fourteen stamps down, thirty-six more to go on this quest of smoked glory. Final Dad Line: Brisket this good should be illegal, but I'm glad Texas keeps it just below felony level.

Had takeout, but was unable to eat it immediately. It was lukewarm when I tried it, but it was still really good. Everything was super flavorful without being salty. And that brisket was the most moist, juiciest, I have ever had, ever! The catfish wasn't muddled or mushy like catfish can sometimes be, even though it was room temperature. If I'm ever back in Dallas I would get the brisket again and again!

Wow this place has some good bbq! I came in to get a togo order and the cashier was very nice, the food came out fast and when I took it back to work it was still hot!! Price is a little high but you get a lot of food for $33

We had to wait a bit for our order, which was a big order, but they were so nice! They comped us cokes and made us feel very welcome. I'll happily come back here again!

I had to have BBQ when in the lone star state and Smokey Joe's came to the rescue!!! It's in the middle of the highway close to DeSoto but TRUST it's worth the drive!!! I had the ribs and the brisket Mac and cheese and omg I'm salivating!!! The ribs were SO meaty and the BBQ sauce was incorporated into the meat well. Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. I had enough ribs for two servings. The baked beans were also good and the green beans come with bacon bits. I do think the green beans are canned but they were still good being mixed with the bacon grease. As for the Mac and cheese it was interesting they added pico on top which was refreshing. I do wish it had a little but more guac but nonetheless it was amazing. It had so much tender brisket I had enough Mac for two sittings. My partner had the half roasted chicken because he doesn't eat pork for religious reasons and he was satisfied. Definitely wish the chicken portions were bigger but it was still perfectly seasoned. I highly recommend this BBQ joint when south of Dallas!!! Cheers to the meat sweats!!!

The line builds quickly, and you don't want to miss out on their best items. If you're looking for some of the best barbecue around, Cattleack is absolutely worth the trip!

My friend absolutely loved the burnt ends. He liked them so much that after we finished the first order, he went back and got a second one, plus some brisket and elote. I thought everything was good, but I will say the menu felt a little limited. This is definitely one of those places where I am glad I finally tried it because it is part of the local DFW BBQ experience, but it is probably not somewhere I would specifically seek out again. That said, if someone wanted to go, I would go again without complaint. I DO want to try the Burndt end bloody mary!

The vibe in this place is really great. The people are friendly. Downtown Plano is cool. The restaurant and bar area are clean, well-attended, and the food and drink are all good. So why only 3-stars? To be fair, I came here on a weeknight around 6:30pm, which is not the best way to judge a BBQ place. I will try to come back on a Friday at lunch time, and I hope things will be epic. Bottom line, I wasn't blown away by the meats! They were well cooked, but the flavor just didn't impress. The Sause (sorry, I'm a Rudy's loyalist) was tasty, but didn't blow my mind. A nice sweet + smoky flavor that worked better with the Spare Ribs than the Brisket. (Another minot note -- I know a lot of BBQ places eschew Baby Back Ribs for Spare Ribs. Lockhart only does Spare Ribs.) Would I come back? 100% Would I recommend that you go here? 100% I have to say the bartender was terrific, and the pit masters were super friendly, so no dis on the staff. I was just hoping for "oh my god" BBQ and didn't quite get there. Still a great visit.

The brisket and pork ribs were decent, but honestly pretty dry and lacking in flavor when compared to some other BBQ places in DFW. For the price, it's pretty similar to other BBQ in the area. The Texas Twinkie is a jalapeño stuffed with cream cheese and brisket and wrapped in bacon. It was my favorite item as the cream cheese and bacon balanced out the spiciness of the jalapeño. The mac n cheese was also delicious with the perfect amount of spice. The service was great too as they made a mistake on my order and quickly corrected it. My Overall Rating - 5 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return) Atmosphere - I love the Dallas Farmer's Market, and Hurtado is the perfect restaurant to occupy this space. There is a line that steadily moves, nice outdoor and indoor seating, and if you walk towards the back you can see all the smokers. If you visit on a weekend, try to arrive before noon to avoid long lines. 1 Star. Service - You place your order, take a number, and your order is brought out to you. While you don't get to see the staff cut your meat in front of you, they are very fast and efficient. There are also Hurtado staff who will clear plates off your table. Great people here. 1 Star. Food - I came for the Birria tacos. Hurtado uses their smoked brisket, which shredded and paired will all things that make Hurtado special - Mexico flavors (cilantro, onions, and that beefy consommé). I also ordered a two-meat plate with brisket and bacon burnt ends. The brisket is great (and well represented in many Yelp reviews). On this visit, the bacon burnt ends stole the spotlight. A well-seasoned and smoked pork belly cube will melt in your mouth. I washed down my meal with the Tres Leches Banana Pudding and ended an incredible meal. One last very important note, Hurtado is a great value. My two tacos, 2 meat plate, and desert were $50. P.S. I split this meal with my son. I love food but I'm not a glutton. 2 Stars. Will I Return? - Yes. I've been to the OG Hurtado in Arlington, the one at Globe Life Field, but the location in the Dallas Farmers Market is my favorite of them all. Yes, I will be back! 1 Star.
