Anytime I make a trip through Texas, I am eager to stop and get another stamp in my Texas Monthly passport. The afternoon drive to Dallas brought me to the longstanding Smokey Joe's BBQ in south Dallas. Located right off I-35, Smokey Joe's is prime real estate and was one of the easier BBQ joints to travel to based on its simple location. As I stepped inside, it was obvious how important Smokey Joe's is to this part of Dallas. There was a small line of people talking as neighbors and friends. I noticed an older gentleman leaving who ran into another older gentleman and immediately told him what to order to make sure he was getting the best of what Smokey Joe's had to offer. My rookie mistake of not heading to Dallas until late meant I arrived after 5:00 and the menu was already slightly sold out. They were tragically out of sliced brisket. I got chopped brisket instead, and since the sliced was already gone, I knew it would be a little drier than usual. It is what it is. As I got to the counter to order and get my stamp, the employee was surprised to see how many stamps I had accumulated already. She was super helpful and very sweet. The one downside as just one guy is that you can only order a half pound as the smallest portion for all the meats, so be prepared for that. The overall atmosphere was pretty nice. They were bumping early 2000s R&B inside the dining room from Alicia Keys to Jennifer Hudson, and the Texas Tech game I wanted to watch was on their big TV, so it was a perfect dining experience. I will write briefly about everything I tried: Chopped Brisket: It was chopped brisket. You really can't judge a brisket once it's chopped. It was good with the sauce and the provided brioche bun basically making a chopped brisket sandwich, but it wasn't special on its own. I want to go back and try some of their sliced brisket in the future. Signature Sausage: A solid jalapeño cheese sausage with cheese oozing in every bite. Loved how meaty and crisp every bite was. Mac and Cheese: This is the type of mac and cheese that makes you think of Thanksgiving and yearn for a quart to take back home with you. It was peppery and brought me back to when I was eight years old. I felt like that dude from Ratatouille. Sweet Potato Casserole: I am a recent fan of sweet potato casserole, and I love a side that is secretly just a dessert. Smokey Joe's is not making white people sides. I went to Smokey Joe's for the first time recently and had a great experience! The brisket was tender and flavorful, and it had a good amount of bark on the outside. We also tried the brisket boudin and jalapeño cheddar sausages, and both were good but I think I preferred the texture of the jalapeño cheddar sausage. The mac & cheese was creamy with some pepper added in. I think what surprised me the most was the Frito pie, which I thought might be too much, but it actually had a great balance of flavors. The crispiness of the Fritos went really well with the brisket and the soft beans and cheese on top. I would get that again if we went back. At BBQ places I usually get banana pudding, and the one here was one of the best versions I've had. Ribs - 2 stars. They tasted oven baked, which is fine if it were not a BBQ restaurant. There was no flavor other than pork. The skin was tough. Burnt end - 5 stars. They threw in 1 burnt end per person. Delicious! Peach cobbler - 1 star (sorry). It was less than room temperature, the crust was mushy and the peaches were not great. I had the ribs and the brisket Mac and cheese and omg I'm salivating!!! The ribs were SO meaty and the BBQ sauce was incorporated into the meat well. Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. I had enough ribs for two servings. The baked beans were also good and the green beans come with bacon bits. I do think the green beans are canned but they were still good being mixed with the bacon grease. As for the Mac and cheese it was interesting they added pico on top which was refreshing. I do wish it had a little but more guac but nonetheless it was amazing. It had so much tender brisket I had enough Mac for two sittings. Here we are checking off another Top 50 joint and that brought us to Smokey Joes. We got there right when they opened at 11am 10/8/22. We ordered the Jabo Platter. The cashier says sorry we are out of turkey. I say ok I'll take the boudin sausage in place of it. Then I ask for the smallest portion of short ends in addition to my order. She charges me $14. I say I just want a few pieces just to try them. She says I'm sorry that's the smallest portion I can sell you. K whatever. Ask for potato salad and green beans as my sides. Then ask for two bottles of water. She hands me cups. Im like ok free water out of the fountain. Nope not free. $5 for water out of the soda fountain. My $46 platter platter turned into $85 with tax and "tip." Then they call me back up to say they are also out of the chicken for my Jabo platter. So I paid full price for a platter 2 minutes after they open and they're out of 2 meats that go on the platter, and still had the nerve to charge me $14 for me to sample the short ends. They're like would you like anything else in place of the chicken. I whisper, yea my $14 back for the short ends buddy. I just passive aggressively say more pulled pork I guess. I'm just really annoyed at them at this point. Time to eat. The brisket wasn't memorable at all, except for being dry. The jalapeño sausage was salty. The boudin sausage was like 99% rice with meat somewhere in there. The brakes were good I suppose but super dry and tough. The ribs, short ends, and pulled pork I have to say were actually quite delicious. Especially the pulled pork, maybe the best I've had in Texas. Ok, so I give Smokey Joe's Bar-B-Que a 3.5 stars. This visit was part of doing the Texas Monthly "Top 50 BBQ" spots. There is a small parking lot. This place is small but it has indoor seating. The entrance faces the freeway, you walk thru the dining room and go up to a small window to place your order and pay. They give you a receipt with a number on it and you wait for them to call out your number, we ordered the 3 meat plate which was brisket, sausage and pork ribs with a side of potato salad. The brisket was moist( they did NOT ask if we wanted moist or lean) the ribs were ok, and the sausage was ok. The potato salad was like mashed potatoes and tasted like deviled eggs. Arrived at about 12:30pm on a Friday and didn't have much of a wait at all. I think I was #34 and they called 32 when I got my receipt. The inside of the place to sit is pretty small, so expect to get friendly or get it to go. I got it to go and just ate in my truck. There were a few bar stools near the order counter, so I just waited there for my order. When you park, go to the left of the building near the main road. That's where the entrance is. Then go thru the dining area to the back to what appears to be a speak easy portal to place your order. There are two of them and they alternate taking orders and shouting pick up numbers so be nimble which way you go. I ordered the Maxi sandwich and was VERY pleased with it. It was a combination of chopped brisket with sliced sausage on a brioche bun with sweet & spicy pickles and pickled onions with bbq sauce on the side which I, of course, drizzled all over everything. WOW it was the BBQ version of a Dagwood sandwich. If you've never heard of one, I'm just an old guy! Anyway, old or young, this was one powerfully good sandwich that let you sample just about everything great in the lovely land of BBQ. Rather than get a side, I went with the amazing sweet potato pie! Have I ever had a sweet potato pie? No. Have you? Probably not. Trust me: you should start with this! They are delicious! I have eaten here several times. I had the brisket frito pie, nachos and Texas Twinkie.
