This was such an unexpected gem on our road trip. It's a few miles from the highway but it's super easy to get there, very few turns and it's easy to find. It's a one woman show, and still quick service with very clean restrooms! The food was great- for once I didn't feel gross eating and then getting in the car to drive more! Everything comes with homemade Cole slaw that is quite good. I loved my tuna sandwich on rye that had perfectly sized pickles within the salad, along with lettuce and tomato on top. Feasted on breakfast at the cozy South 30 Diner, 2 miles south of the NY State Thruway Amsterdam exit. My wife enjoyed a perfect veggie and egg burrito with homemade hot salsa - the best burrito ever. I had eggs with delicious homemade sausage. Locals at the next table loved their sausage with gravy. They were disappointed when they found out that their favorite homemade corned beef hash was sold out. We enjoyed our conversation with the proprietor Rain on a wide range of topics. Thank god for Yelp! I use the maps a lot when we r driving toward a city so we can find a good place to eat. This was just about a mile from 90. So we gotta get back on. Our waitress was great. Funny she asked me what I smelled like. It seemed familiar to her. And it was! Soap n Glory original scented lotion ... too funny. We had a good giggle!! it's a little house made Into a cafe. just the kinda place we like. Very homey and everyone friendly. I saw they had homemade sausage so I wanted something with that! Boy had chicken n biscuits. We got our plates and owner forgot that I wanted homemade sausage and got 3 links. But they were good too. Visiting the area for the weekend and found this charming place on a whim. The owner/cook is wonderful and friendly and so funny. Very talkative but we don't mind as it made it even better. There is no menu, food list is on paper all over the restaurant which makes it different but in a good way. All food is made to order (except the desserts of course) and portions are a good size and the prices are reasonable. Will be going back again when we are in the area and it's nice to go to a place and not feel like another customer but apart of the community. BTW: we are from FL and have yet to find a place here in NY that does biscuits and gravy the correct southern way, until now. The Biscuits and Gravy was on point, just like my parents use to make and the sausage is made there which is even better!!! read more

We were out looking for a spot for breakfast late on a Saturday morning. We went here at the suggestion of our daughter, who worked her way through school in restaurants. This is a charming, country kitchen that is very clean. It is handicapped accessible. We were greeted by, Rain, the owner. She was very personable and made a fresh pot of decaf for us. While the coffee was brewing we took a look at the menu. It is a combination of traditional diner fare and some breakfast specialty omelettes. Two of the omelettes, the Italian and the Sicilian caught my eye. When Rain came to take our order, I asked if she was Italian, as we are. She replied that she was, immediately asking what part of Italy my family is from, something only one Italian would ask another. I asked if she could make a frittata. She said yes. It was excellent. Rain said she may add it to the menu. A good frittata in the capital district is hard to find. This place checks all of the boxes: great food, service and ambiance. Just had a special breakfast with my sister. The owner, Anita, is so pleasant and accommodating and will tailor her recipes for your diet or tastes. She reminds me of going to my Italian grandmothers or relatives. They always have potatoes, onion, garlic, peppers and spinach to mix with ricotta cheese, provolone or mozzerella on hand and can mix them to create sandwiches or ciambotta (skillet in English). Food is hearty and homemade. Nothing fancy or frou-frou creative. Ordered a couple of eggs with toast and potatoes. Wheat toast was thick slices of seedy bread with plenty of butter. I recently went camping in the Adirondacks to the north and had to stop here (again) on the way back home. It is so close to I-90 too so it was barely out of the way. I went here last year as well and had the same great food, breakfast. There are daily specials and the eggs are farm fresh and fantastic, especially when accompanied with home fries, bacon and toast. I meant to get a photo of the food but once it arrived I picked up the fork and that breakfast was obliterated :-) I am a creature of habit for breakfast and this meal was just as good as the one last year but I was tempted by the menu... It was terrible! I ordered biscuit with sausage gravy and an egg on top. Sausage gravy is usually creamy looking, this was a lumpy mess. The sausage was in chunks like the bulk sausage I buy for stuffing. There was no egg on top. My husband ordered a cheese omelette and it was awful, had what looked like cottage cheese in it. They never brought his toast nor the side of sausage he ordered! $24 for this ghastly mess! Don't go there!!! Hope we don't get sick on the way home!! read more

Cozy country diner. The owner/chef was warm and friendly. Takes the time to talk to the customers and make them feel welcomed. We were there for breakfast on our way home from Buffalo. Food was delicious. I had the cannoli French toast with blueberries. Was cooked perfectly. The owner is a sausage maker and my husband had the Italian sausage omelet. He said it was very good. My son enjoyed his chocolate chip pancakes. He was also given a side of cannoli cream for the pancakes. Coffee is also brewed strong which we like. Stopped here with family who are locals and always wanted to try this place out. I was encouraged by all the good reviews. Let me start with the positive. Service was outstanding. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. The decor is adorable. There are tons of locals who here, so they have loyal clientele. I guess that is what kills me the most about this place, because they could easily triple their business if the food wasn't so god awful. I got biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs and home fries with onions. The gravy was thin, cold and flavorless. In the middle of it lay a dry, lump of a biscuit that tasted like straight baking powder. The scrambled eggs hadn't been beaten and weren't fluffy. The home fries were also flavorless and tasted like canned potatoes, with onions thrown in that were undercooked. I dumped everything in the gravy and covered it with hot sauce to try and save the meal, but there was no salvaging it. My husband got the farmer's omlette, which he found disappointing. Just an omlette with a slice of Kraft cheese thrown in the middle. He said the ingredients tasted old. He had intestinal issues the whole day and ride back home, as did my cousin. She also had a hair in her food. The people cooking need to wear hats or hair nets. This place could be magical with a different person in the kitchen. The cooks and owners seem to be the same people, and that is a mistake. Get an experienced short order cook in this place, because a breakfast joint that can't make proper scrambled eggs or home fries is only going to last until tasty competiton comes along and steals your clientele. Today, I was working in Amsterdam and I wanted to meet my friend for lunch somewhere that wasn't a chain. I jumped on my trusty Yelp app and this gem popped up. My friend got there first and propped herself up at the counter because the place was hopping with locals. Good idea on her part because got to chat with Anita and Tammy, the ladies who run the place. They are a hoot! You can tell they've been friends for years by their banter. My friend had a western omelette which was made entirely of fresh ingredients. It tasted so good that I needed a few more bites:) it was served with a side of home fries as any good breakfast should. This omelette took up the whole plate and was made with eggs from their own hens! Seriously, farm fresh! I had the cheeseburger cook medium and it was so juicy and had so much flavor. Mine was served with a side of tomato salad which added a freshness to the meal and made it not too heavy even though it was a huge burger. We stayed and chatted some more after lunch, so Anita brought us out a bowl of her Squash soup to sample. Homemade soup is the best and this was honest to goodness homemade! I'll definitely be back to try whatever these ladies come up with! Excellent hometown diner fare to be had here. And, the people made lunch even better. Just a quick but lively stop on the long stretch of I-90 from Maine to Colorado. Anita, owner/cook/server gave us great service as she prepared and served her meals with pride.
