I finally gave in and bought my first electric bike and let me tell you--it was no easy decision! After endless research, I wrestled with whether to go for a street bike or a mountain bike, and whether or not I wanted a throttle. In the end, legislation made the choice for me (no throttle for mountain bikes "peddle assist"), but it all worked out perfectly! If you're going to invest in an e-bike, make sure you go with a company that knows their stuff and stands behind their products--enter Southbay Cycle! I went with Southbay because they've been in the game for a long time, and they partner with manufacturers that back their bikes--especially the electric ones. I ended up choosing a Specialized e-mtb bike that was right in the sweet spot--not the most expensive, but definitely not the cheapest either. The whole process was smooth and stress-free. The team at Southbay took care of everything! They ordered the bike, assembled it when it arrived, and took the time to walk me through every single feature. Walked in around 11:20AM on 8/24/2025. Took about 5 minutes to be acknowledge by a worker in the back who looks like he repairs the bikes? He greeted and asked if I needed help as I wanted to purchase two bikes. A second worker came by and started speaking with us for maybe 5 minutes. Soon after another customer came and he decided to help that customer before us for a bike delivery service. Me and my wife waited 5-10 minutes before we decided to leave. This bicycle store is "breath of fresh air" compared to most other bicycle stores that I have patronized over the years in this area and Southern California. Yesterday was my second time in this shop, my first time buying something, and both times they made me feel welcome. You don't have that elitist condescending attitude here that permeates other shops. In fact, I enjoyed chatting with the employees yesterday and both Kris and Bob were very helpful in getting me what I needed. I have been in the cycling world with lot's of bikes for over 30 years and if you go around, it's not always that way: A few years ago I saved up and purchased a new $3500 bicycle. When I brought it to one shop in West LA for a derailleur adjustment, the owner looked at it and exclaimed, "junk, junk!" He yelled out, "Look at this, they put plastic in the fork--junk!" I left and took it to another shop in South Bay and the owner there, looked at the Shimano Dura Ace derailleur and put his arm around me and said, "If you would have spent a little more, you could have had a campy (Campagnolo) derailleur, now you are stuck with Shimano. He goes on, "We only believe in Campy here, I ride a Campy." You won't find that attitude here. The owner of this shop is well known and active in the cycling industry and has been in the bike business for longer than most people reading this review have been alive. This shop is small but beautiful and parking is easy and plentiful. They are in a very newish comfortable building. It's also a good location to try out a bike for purchase or check the repair after service as the parking lot in the back is flat and there are also hills in the area. They have city bikes under 1K and also very expensive road bikes from Specialized. They are a contracted Specialized dealer. They also have some cool looking electric bikes that I think were reasonably priced for what you get. The service manager has also been in the bike service business for many years. I perused the store last time and they carry some some high quality accessory lines. Because the store is small, it seems like they try to carry the best of each item category. Their retail accessory prices are reasonable. My purchase yesterday was 15% less than the same exact item at REI and less than you would pay for the same item at Amazon. Even better, they did not charge me to install the accessory on the spot! They do have a longer wait for general bike service I inquired about on the phone last week due to the crush of people cycling during the COVID closures. I had to bring my bike to another place I know in the Valley that had a 24-hour turn around for a chain install I really needed ASAP. All the employees I saw here were wearing face coverings but none are going to give you a handshake, hug or kiss as you enter the store right now due to local COVID regulations. Big thank you to everyone in the shop that helped direct me to my new cool YELLOW! pedals I picked up yesterday. (See pics.) Had Kris not been proactive in suggesting them while on the phone looking for something else I would have never known about them or that they even sell that brand. Now I can see where to put my feet to make the bike go.... When Bob told me he can install the pedals right away--I said, "You have the tools for that?" and he immediately pulled out a pedal wrench and hex driver out of his pocket and went to work. I went to a number of bike shops as I had an idea what I was trying to do and accomplish and when I went to South Bay Cycle, I knew I had found the place where I would buy my bike and get my questions answered. I ended up purchasing a bike and accessories at this shop. I was treated like a valued customer on every visit, these guys went to the mat for me and over exceeded expectations. He even took the time to measure my sitting area and educated me on how different saddle technologies function. I was able to make an informed decision with Kris's help. $160 is not cheap for a saddle, so it was important to me to have that peace of mind toward my purchase when walking out. My beater bike wasn't shifting and my old bike shop had closed so I decided to give this place a try. I drive over at 2pm on a weekday and was taken care of while waiting. Turns out my shifter was gummed up which frank took care of with ease. He also explained everything to me including how lubricate other parts on the bike. I rarely (actually never) provide reviews of my experiences with retailers &/or service providers. But my experience with the purchase of my 2024 Roubaix SL8 Pro from South Bay Cycles in Manhattan Beach was the pinnacle of good service and technical support! It began with Randall Araki who was referred to me by a local bike fit professional, Lauren Mulwitz. Randall guided me through multiple conversations, meetings and test rides about several choices that led to my selection of the Roubaix. The store manager, David Rodriguez, stepped in and patiently helped me finalize the deal, including adding a 2nd set of wheels I purchased for gravel riding and personally walked me through the functionality of SRAM AXS e-tap derailleur. David even trouble shot the difficulty I had paring my ancient Garmin 830 to display both power and cadence. Oh, the ride of the 2024 Roubaix SL8 Pro is amazingly smooth over debris. But more important is my high praise for the South Bay Cycle team! They entire staff is welcoming, knowledgeable and customer oriented! I brought my bike here for a full suspension overhaul. Diego did a great job explaining the procedure, texting me the quote, and setting up the appointment. It did take a few weeks to get onto the shop's schedule but that's understandable given the explosion in biking popularity. The wait was well worth it. My suspension had not been touched in over 2 years and it was in need of some TLC. There were creaking noises coming from the fork and the rear suspension, and performance was starting to suffer. After Diego finished he gave me all the old parts so I could see how worn everything had gotten. My recent rides have been heaven. Everything is quiet again and the suspension is doing its job by soaking up most of the bumps. With regards to their showroom, it was well stocked with every accessory I could imagine. They even have lots of new bikes ready to take home. They let me test a new Stumpjumper in the parking lot, and now I am fighting the urge to splurge on a new bike. Darn it! read more

Although I bought my 2018 Specialized Turbo Levo at another dealer in LA before South Bay Cycle opened, I now refuse to have anyplace else touch it after having totally unsatisfactory service elsewhere. South Bay Cycle does first class work and they know what they are doing. The service department is top notch as is the overall shop. Diego and his service team are honest, trustworthy and very knowledgeable. Maybe that is why they are always booked up but they will communicate well to get you scheduled and the work completed in a timely manner. The store itself is stocked with quality goods, great selection, helpful advice and great service and every single employee I have interacted with are friendly and helpful and nice people. This was the third bike shop in the neighborhood that I have gone to within the last year and I can safely say it will be the last. I am a complete noob with the bike (just recently learned as an adult) but their team has always been willing to take time to explain things and help, even with the stupid questions. We just bought my wife a new to us bike and when we went in to change out a couple parts one of the gentleman tried helping get my 6 year old on the bike. She was scared but he was absolutely amazing and worked with her. We showed up at closing time but they still took the time to go beyond! This is our bike shop 100%!
