Pic that I received after surgery
    Tsz Ying W.

Last Friday night, my girl Chili started vomiting and couldn't keep any food down. I monitored her throughout Saturday, but by Sunday morning I decided to take her to SSVH first thing. Dr. McHaffie performed blood work and X-rays, and suspected a foreign body might be lodged in her stomach. Since Chili was very unwell, I made the difficult decision to proceed with surgery. I was worried sick and just wanted her to feel better. Dr. Goraya, the surgeon, was incredible--he walked me through every detail and provided clear, very affordable options. Both Dr. McHaffie and Dr. Goraya were compassionate, professional, and truly treated Chili as if she were their own. I CANNOT thank them enough for their kindness, expertise, and empathy. Because her electrolytes were unstable and her condition was more on the critical side, surgery was scheduled for Monday. The entire SSVH team--receptionists, technicians, and all the doctors involved--were absolutely wonderful throughout the process. Thanks to everyone's care, Chili came home on Tuesday afternoon and has been doing amazingly well--back to her happy, playful self! This is truly a six-star review because five stars just aren't enough to express how grateful and satisfied I am.

Dr Mcafee saw my sick spider (cat) and he's been doing a good job helping me with him. Thank you. I met Dr Sidhu he saw my other pets, fresh out of school but nice

Do not take your pets here. This place will turn your pet's alements into profits, then sign them a death warrant. I took my cat in regularly, 11 months ago he was diagnosed with slight dehydration and slight anemia. They told me my cat wasn't sick enough for treatments. So I took him to another vet and they said South Seattle overlooked a huge red flag. My little guy just passed away last night at 4 years old because it was too late by the time what he actually needed was acknowledged. I noticed him losing weight 2 years ago, and South Seattle told me not to worry, and that it was just his shape, even though on their records, he was 11lbs on his first visit, then 10lbs on his second, third and 4th visit, his 5th visit he was 8lbs, and that's when he was diagnosed but "not eligible" for meds...nor did they speak with me about any contradictions any meds can have with his condition. Not to mention it took them hours to transfer over his medical records.

We had a really great experience at South Seattle Veterinary Hospital and we are so glad we came here for the treatment of our Chihuahua, Ambrose. Our Chihuahua, Ambrose, had an allergic reaction and some gastrointestinal issues. He had been misdiagnosed at a previous Veterinarian's office just a few days before. Dr. James McHaffie was absolutely incredible with our little baby dog. They took him in the back and examined him and Dr. McHaffie came in and told us what was wrong and advised what to do next. He thoroughly explained the cost of everything to us, and explained why the tests and such were needed. We felt he was very thorough in his diagnosis and treatment plan. The front desk staff was also very courteous and polite and gave great customer service. I asked for the medical records to file a pet insurance claim. They initially told me that normally medical records requests take 4-5 days. However, when Sarah from the clinic text me the day after the visit to ask how Ambrose was doing, I told her about the medical records, and how I needed them sooner rather than later. She gave the Veterinarian a note for me, and I was able to get the records quickly. I highly recommend South Seattle Veterinary Hospital and Dr. McHaffie for your Veterinary needs.

My little girl day 4 of surgery.

Ask the Community - South Seattle Veterinary Hospital

What are the prices like for all their services? (Nail trimming, vaccines, etc)

I only have experience with emergency stuff, but they were much more affordable than other vets in Seattle. The price to treat my cat here was less than half of what it cost at the Emergency Vet in Fremont for the same services.

Unfortunately, our experience fell far short of those expectations. We brought our dog in after she had been vomiting for days, hadn't eaten in two days, was panting heavily, whining in pain, and appeared to be having difficulty breathing. She was taken to the back immediately, but after that we were left sitting in an exam room for over an hour with no updates. We eventually went to the front desk ourselves to ask what was going on. We were told the doctor would be in shortly, and then waited another hour before he finally came to speak with us. During that conversation, we learned for the first time that our dog had arrived with a temperature of 104 degrees. We asked whether she still had a fever, and the doctor didn't know and said he would have to go check. About 30 minutes later, another staff member brought treatment estimates that included a quick scan ultrasound the doctor had never mentioned. This was the first time anyone told us that a quick scan ultrasound had supposedly been performed. We had questions about the findings, but no one could clearly explain them. When the doctor returned, he recommended additional bloodwork before realizing information from recent bloodwork was already in our dog's chart. Watching him review the chart in front of us after making recommendations significantly undermined our confidence in the care being provided. After approximately four hours, we left with a bill of more than $600, no diagnosis, no treatment plan, and no clear answers about what was causing our dog's symptoms. We were charged for an IV catheter and a quick scan ultrasound. Despite being told our dog arrived with a 104 degree fever, nobody ever explained why no treatment was provided for it. Emergency medicine is complicated, and not every case has an immediate diagnosis. What isn't acceptable is spending four hours in an emergency hospital with so little communication, so little doctor interaction, and so few answers.

The same staff I struggled with was there but other's had joined which seemed to create accountability. I find the facilities clean and the staff generally polite, but the level of politeness definitely varies from one customer to the next. This is observable from the waiting room. The doctor's and assistants are professional and personable. I generally see Dr. Kraabel, but have see a different Dr. for the last two visits. I recently scheduled an appointment when my Sheba showed signs of an ear infection. He had also developed an occasional tearing from one eye which this doctor had observed in May. I suspected his eye may have been scratched from my other dog's tail. For cost reasons I had been applying a human prescription lubricant which I brought in to make sure it was safe; the Dr. made no recommendations. I asked her to take another look at this visit which she did. After a brief exam she suggested a glaucoma test, when I hesitated she told me the worst case scenario, losing an eye without warning and I quickly agreed. The assistant had taken an ear swab when we arrived and now the Dr. escorted my pup to the back. When she returned a few moments later she told me he didn't have an ear infection and showed me how to clean his ears by unrolling the cotton ball and inserting it in his ear. She then went over my entire bill; almost $400. I was aghast, this was more than when he gets the expensive ear treatment. I tried to back out of the $77.00 glaucoma test, but it was already done. It was then she told me that that test was negative as well and suggested a cheap bottle of eye drops. In the end I spent almost $250.00 (with flushes and drops to be filled elsewhere) to be told my dog doesn't have an ear infection and needed eye drops. The doctor later sent results in which the findings showed mild conjunctivitis, yet she withheld that information, choosing to use fear in order to motivate me into agreeing to an unnecessary test. This was a shameful exploitation of the pet connection (a trend among vets) as well as a betrayal of integral trust one must have with the medical profession. All of that, on top of ridiculously high charges for a simple office visit. I left feeling I had been played; swindled, legally, but robbed none-the-less. Needless to say, I will search high and low to find an alternative medical provider for my pets.

I have never been wowed by their service, office, staff or overall attention to my dogs, they have been just ok. The last two times I have had to interact with this place has been awful. - somehow they got one of my dogs vaccine records mixed up. I was needing documentation for the groomer and this took multiple calls, me pulling my records, and me physically going in to the office 3x to get any sort of resolution to the situation. They NEVER followed up and never called back as they repeatedly told me they would. - my dogs have always been on a heart-worm & flea medication, but since we moved to the area, and they didn't issue their last prescription they would not issue a new prescription because they wanted to do an expensive blood work up before prescribing medication. They have both my dog's prior records but refused to issue the prescription refill. So I got to pay $175 for simple blood work and a n additional $120 for a full exam to confirm they don't have heart-worm ( obviously) because they have always been medicated for it. - I called last week to schedule my senior dog's rabies vaccine that he is due for this month. He was seen for his wellness check in April of 2023 (que heart-worm debacle) They refused to schedule his rabies vaccine with a vet tech insisting that I HAD to have an annual exam to get just his vaccine. They said they would check with the vet to "see" if they could just give the vaccine since he was less than 12 months out from his last exam and call me back. It has been almost a week since that conversation and there has been no communication. This is a case of 3 strikes and you're out. I would recommend going to an office that doesn't try to nickel and dime you and cares more about your pets actual needs. As a side note the office staff isn't good. Very snarky and rude. Zero follow up and POOR communication. The veterinarian I have seen has been good overall, just nothing to be wowed over.

Instead, the manager was rude, disrespectful, and unprofessional and told me (incorrectly) that I shouldn't have received the discounts that they promise through their partnership with Seattle Humane. VCA hospitals are known for being rude and a poor place for treatment, and that was exactly my experience. I adopted a kitten from Seattle Humane, and she had an ear infection. Seattle Humane and VCA Hospitals partner, so that your first examination of an adopted pet is free, and you get $250 toward treating a variety of health issues that they might come with, like an ear infection. During my initial visit, I asked many times for the tech to show me how to apply the ear ointment, but she wouldn't actually show me how much to use (she kept saying "just a squeeze") but she did hold up the tube to show me where to administer it. When I came back 3 weeks later, the kitten still had the ear infection. This time I had a different vet tech who ACTUALLY showed me how to use the ointment and how much to use. I learned that the first person had taught me the WRONG place to add the ointment. She showed me how to massage the ear to make sure the ointment got deep in there, which the initial vet tech taught me incorrectly as well. I also realized I had not been using NEARLY enough in my initial 2 weeks of treatment, since the first vet tech wouldn't show me. I was pretty annoyed at this point, because this poor little kitten had on ongoing ear infection because the first vet tech wouldn't actually show me how to treat it, and what she did tell me was wrong. In addition, now I have to come in for a THIRD appointment and pay ANOTHER $175 for an ear exam and cytology to check if the infection is gone. And I need to pay another $50 for another bottle of ointment. I asked if I could potentially get a discount on that third appointment, since it was their fault for not answering my questions and teaching me how to use the ointment the first time. The manager came out, and, instead of apologizing to me for their neglect, she said she was appalled at how much they had discounted off my initial appointment. I told her I adopted the kitten from Seattle Humane, so the first exam is covered and another $250 toward any health issues. She said, "yeah, but they covered the ear cleaning and they shouldn't have". I said, "I figured they covered it because it was important in helping clear the infection. But even if they hadn't covered that, I am still back here today spending another $175 on the infection. If they didn't cover the cleaning, they would have covered that same amount today anyway, until I hit the $250". She said, "Ugh. Well, I guess we can give you 10% off the exam next time. We've already given you more discounts than we should have". Which is not true at all! I got ONLY the discounts I was promised! If they are going to get this annoyed about giving people their promised discounts, maybe they shouldn't partner with Seattle Humane and offer these discounts in the first place! So I got no apology from the manager, and instead she found something else to be rude to me about that was completely unjustified. I would steer clear of these disrespectful people with unqualified vet techs. I went to a different vet for my third follow up appointment, and they were shocked that VCA didn't send me home with ear cleaning solution and teach me to clean her ears, since that is important for helping clear up infections.
