The street corn was good, chicken was fine but definitely needed the bbq sauce to help with it being a little dry. French fries were crisp and soft in the middle, thick cut fry. The building is a small bar/pub type feel, one street removed from the Carson street. My husband ordered his meal on grub hub, and while I'm unimpressed with the app, I am impressed with the management and staff. I received a call after his meal had sat for a while waiting for pick up and was marked as "delivered". They valued the fact that we are return customers and provided us a courtesy call to let us know the food is at the restaurant and confirmed it was not delivered despite the app notification and blurry picture. School brought the food truck for teacher appreciation week and 1st taste of them. The employee was super friendly. Ordered the pulled pork with Mac and cheese. The pork was solid. Mac and cheese decent. Really enjoyed the reaper sauce on both...fairly aggressive heat which I enjoy. I stopped at this food truck downtown in hopes of some good barbecue but it honestly wasn't that good. i got brisket nachos and they really just werent tasty at all. the food was warm not hot and the brisket didn't really taste fresh nor were the chips good and there was about 20% brisket to the 80% chips and Liquid cheese. the Truck looked good and appealing but service was average. I thought the food was quite tasty and the prices were pretty awesome. It's a simple type of place, nothing too unique or extravagant. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and a side of sweet cornbread. Both items were very tasty. The pulled pork sandwich came in a nice portion. The price was awesome at just $9. They had a great ratio of meat to bread. The bottom layer of bread was completely soaked from the moistness of the pork, though. The meat itself was tender and decently flavorful. Not too fatty thankfully. Their BBQ sauce is very standard and not my favorite, but it did add some solid flavor to the sandwich. The sandwich also has some coleslaw, which is nice. It's already included with the meat. The cornbread was quite good as well. Not too crumbly, but I do still wish it were more moist. I loved the cinnamon butter they served with it! Still warm when I got home from the drive. And so, so delicious with the perfect amount of sweetness. Tasted almost like cake. All in all, I definitely enjoyed this place. They have some of the better BBQ in the city and will always chat you up when you stop in. However, if you ever see their food truck out and about, make sure to ask for a Barbacone!(when is Guy and Triple D ever going or feature this work of art!!). I'm a vegetarian and believe it or not I usually love this place. Today I called for my normal sides, the only items I can eat on the menu, to find out they are out of corn. Fine, we'll grab some elsewhere. But then they called after my husband already left to get my meal to say they are also out of sweet potatoes. I'm pretty sure giant eagle is a few blocks away and they usually carry both corn and sweet potatoes... so not sure why you're so under prepared for your already very limited menu. I've been wanting to try ss bbq for sometime. Hoping to get a quality bbq establishment closer to my neighborhood. Unfortunately my wait will continue. I stopped here one late afternoon, no a soul in the establishment, except bartender (possibly manager or owner as well). As there was paperwork scatter all over the bar top. Made me feel like I was interrupting. Anyway, on to the food. In which I ordered takeout. The carnivore platter, cole slaw, and Mac n cheese. My grand total $29.& change. Coleslaw is vinegar base, which I was very very excited to try, however it fell really short of enjoyable. Pretty much just cabbage (Napa & red), carrots, white vinegar and a tad bit if any sugar. Seasoning was something that was truly lacking. Mac n cheese. As if Kraft substituted cheddar powder for pepper jack powder. Below average On to the meat. Supposedly 3oz of pulled pork, quarter rack of ribs, and 3oz of brisket for $21. This was not even close to being worth it. The brisket was as if the local deli of yesteryear sliced me some flavorless brisket. The pulled pork was just ok. However the ribs were fantastic!!!!! I couldn't understand of the ribs were so tasty, but yet the brisket and pork were so underwhelming. It could be that the ribs the best looking DUFF. Its been three or four years since I sampled the food here and perhaps it was only once or twice because it was not very good. But I was craving ribs and on a whim ordered delivery from Southside BBQ. My expectations were wildly exceeded! The ribs were meaty and tender, clearly cooked long and slow but then finished over a wood fire, so that had that fresh grilled flavor as well as the long, slow bbq flavor. The half chicken was tender and succulent. I think my favorite thing was the coleslaw. I mean, how often are you wowed by coleslaw? This stuff is legit!!! Its a vinegar based coleslaw that is sweet and sour and the veggies are finely grated so they really absorb the dressing. I lived in Texas for 30 years and while this is a different style, I would gladly and joyfully eat this bbq and make zero comparisons. Its just straight up damn good food. read more

I've been wanting to check out this Brick & Mortar location for quite some time, however, this popped up on Grubhub during Covid Quarantine, so I thought that I would give it a go. Normally I don't like to review Restaurants from Delivery/takeout, but I feel like I got a pretty good representation of their Fare from my order, so I'll give it a go. First off, I got the Carnivore, which is 3 Beef Ribs, 2 Smoked chicken wings and 4 slices of Brisket for 26$. No messing around, the Ribs are the star. Pretty much exactly what I look for in a great Beef rib. Tons of meat, fall off the bone, and great smoky flavor that blended well with the BBQ sauce. Second are the smoked wings. Very good, but nothing to write home about. Lastly is the typical Pittsburgh Brisket. Too me it's almost more like thick cut roast beef. My sister lives in Austin TX, so I've had some of the best Brisket in the world, and I realize that I have a high standard, but this stuff should only be served between two slices of bread. It's not terrible, just not my style. I also got a side of Coleslaw, which I very much enjoyed. It's more of a vinegar based slaw, so if you prefer a creamy mayo KFC type of slaw, it might not be your jam. Finally the Price, for the carnivore it was 26$, Which I feel is overpriced. It should definitely come with 1 or 2 sides or even a couple slices of white bread. How cheap is it to throw a handful of fries or chips in with it? Maybe it is cheaper at the store rather than on Grubhub, but if not, I would just get a half rack of Ribs and an order of smoked wings for about the same price and more food. Anyways, overall I am happy with it, and look forward to going to South Side to try it after the Quarantine. read more

Despite what the ratings say this place is not worth your trouble. I knew right off the bat when I saw that the restaurant was completely empty on a Friday night that something wasn't right about these reviews. They have great staff and service but that's about where the positives end. The brisket nachos had fake cheese on them and the brisket was in little cubes not thin slices like you would expect. The ribs were decent but I could get that anywhere. The mac and cheese also had that processed cheese garbage on it. The slaw is just awful. If you served that in North Carolina you'd be extradited. The fries were overcooked but still pretty good. This is a restaurant that uses food truck recipes. There are plenty of other options nearby and it is not worth a drive not to mention expensive. A rib platter, mac and cheese, and nachos is $47.48. Bit of a ripoff if I'm honest. $10 less and it would be fine. I want to give it more than one star but I just can't. The ribs are cooked to perfection with such a tasty sauce. I normally don't like Mac n cheese but if i had to live off of their Mac n cheese i would. The sauce isn't too spicy which is perfect. The hospitality is on point too. Pat is the owner and he's wonderful. He took time out of his day to come over and greet me. Never a dull conversation with him. Pittsburgh and barbecue are two words that do not seem sensible. Some restaurants try it and it is either lacking in flavor or overdone. When I'm looking for barbecue, I'm not going to Texas Roadhouse but I'm also not going to Union Pig and Chicken (no offense to lovers of either establishment). I feel like barbecue needs to be unpretentious but done right. The South Side BBQ Restaurant gives me exactly what I want. I ordered the pulled pork meal with ghost pepper mac n' cheese and my boyfriend ordered ribs. We were given a plethora of sauces to try which was amazing because I can never have too much sauce on anything I eat ever. The portion of pork was huge and the ghost pepper mac had a balanced amount of cheese and heat. It took all of my strength in the world to not eat all of it in one sitting. The sauces were all tasty but the Carolina style was by favorite. I'm more of a Kansas City-style sauce lover so I was really surprised but it was had the perfect amount of vinegar and pepper. My boyfriend's ribs were huge and he loved them which is impressive for a southern gentleman eating ribs in Pittsburgh. I also really loved the look of the restaurant. It was really unassuming and cozy.We actually just sat at the bar. I was kind of sad that there weren't more people there but hopefully everyone will read this and dive in! It is worth it! read more

The cornbread was the best I've ever had, sweet with a little dollop of yummy butter on top, definitely my favorite part of the meal. The coleslaw was nothing but a pile of shredded cabbage, I didn't taste any vinegar, sugar or any seasoning at all! The macaroni and cheese was smooth and creamy, with large noodles, too much like Kraft for me. My biggest gripe about this place is the price, the entrées include just meat period. I just went to Southside barbecue on 17th street. There was a $6 off coupon (buy one item get one item) in the enjoy book so we figured we would try it out for an inexpensive lunch. We went in and My husband wanted the pulled pork entree and i ordered the 1/2 of bbq chicken (I specifically asked if there was ANY spice on the chicken and I was told NO). There were no sides with the entrees and they offered a "family platter" that consisted of most of their sides for $13. We decided we wanted to try the food and we could have leftovers for tonight. The "family platter" came out and most of the food was burnt. It consisted of very small servings and wasn't worth the $13. The entrees came out and the pulled pork (that wasn't cheap) was very small portion and it was dried meat with a squirt of bbq sauce on it. My 1/2 of chicken came out (looking like 1/2 of a Cornish hen) and was VERY spicy!!!!!!! I asked the waiter to replace the chicken for a hamburger. The burger was great. Then we received the check. They charged me for the chicken even though the burger was cheaper. I told the waiter and he said since nothing was wrong with the chicken I was getting charged for that and they gave me the burger as a courtesy. I told him that was unacceptable and then he went and got who appeared to be the owner. At this point my husband was ready to blow a gasket so I asked him to allow me to talk to the owner. The owner reintegrated what the waiter said. I explained that I was told there was no spice on the chicken so there was something wrong with my chicken. He argued for a few minutes but in the end took off the chicken and charged us for the burger. He did this very rudely and said that he needs to make money and you don't get something for nothing. He then pointed out that we had a coupon. He said the coupon was $6 off when you bought two entrees. The waiter told him the coupon states two items. This only made the owner angrier because he had to honor his coupon. After this was all done and we paid our bill we overheard him tell other customers that everybody wants a discount (I'm sure he was in reference to us). We will not go back again because of our experience. Customer service is key to owning a restaurant. There's a way to and not to talk to a customer and he was a prime example of how NOT to treat a customer. read more

This is going to be a mixed review. The good news is, the mac n cheese is really tasty. Don't bother with the beans, just canned beans with some syrup thrown in. But what really disappointed me was the ribs. Dry, stringy, generally yuck. I wasn't about to waste 50 bucks worth of ribs (yes they are expensive), so the next day I ran them through the crockpot to get them where they needed to be. I didn't like their ketchup sauce so I used my own. Then they were edible. But if I wanted to make my own pulled pork sandwiches then I could have done that myself without paying big bucks.
