I finally checked out this diner and had a great experience. It clearly has a loyal group of regulars, and the staff was very friendly. The inside is light and bright, with tables, booths, and counter seating. Another plus is the convenient parking both in the back and on the street. A definite plus! They offer all the diner favorites. I had the ham and eggs with toast and home fries. Everything was tasty, though I wish the home fries had been a little hotter, and the dish needed a bit of salt. The hollandaise sauce tasted fresh, and the coffee was quite good. My friend ordered the Eggs in a Basket, which came with eggs, cheese, bacon, hollandaise sauce, and home fries, and she said it was tasty. I'm sure this place gets quite busy on other days since it's down the street from Highland Park Diner, but when we visited on a Tuesday morning it was pretty chill. . South Wedge Diner is a my favorite type of Roc City gem - it has a parking lot! There is plentiful seating and a counter. I like their menu because they have interesting breakfast items like raspberry almond French toast and a pizza omelet in addition to more traditional items. The raspberry almond French toast came with a little container of raspberry sauce and the toast was filled with almonds. It was really good, I would get this again. There was enough left over to take some home for lunch. I got a side of grits which were good and not runny. The coffee was just okay and very hot. The staff is friendly, prices are reasonable. LOVE the South Wedge Diner! Always enjoy the great service and tasty food. I also appreciate that while this place is always busy, there's usually enough seating and enough turn over that you can get in without too much a wait. I was recently there on back to back weekend days. We had friends in from out of town, and decided to have breakfast there on a Saturday morning around 11 am before an epic 8-mile hike. Folks in our group had pancakes, an omelet, corned beef hash, and eggs benedict. Servings were large, eggs were cooked perfect, and there were plenty of condiments available. The only comment I heard was that the two guys who got orders of the hash would have liked the dishes to be more beefy. BUT the fact that the kitchen accommodated our requests for extra-crispy home fries all around made up for it. We decided to return the next morning, at 10 am on a Sunday. This time we intended to follow breakfast with a long walk at Highland park. Folks ordered poached eggs with toast, stuffed French toast, over-easy eggs with bacon and sausage, and another omelet. Again, smiles and happy bellies all around. (Pro tip - their breakfast sausage is something special - definitely recommended!!) While I wouldn't say SWD is 'farm to table', they do have seasonal specials like their pumpkin pancakes, and the yolks of their eggs are a deep orange, which tells you those are from well-fed chickens. I'll say we had great customer service! And maybe I should have ordered something different. My partner got the Friday fish fry special and was very happy with it. (The side of coleslaw needs some seasoning or something though). I opted for a burger. It was just ok. The burger patties are clearly premade frozen ones and not well seasoned. We went for a late breakfast on a Monday. I liked the fact that we were greeted immediately and they were very friendly. We took our seat as the menus were already on the table. Our server was very nice and took our order quickly. I had the egg white Monterey Omelet and my husband had poached eggs with corned beef hash. As you can see from the pictures he enjoyed his meal. I loved the Omelet and the homefries but, the toast had an odd metal smell and didn't taste good. It is an open floorplan diner so you can see all the way into the kitchen. Along with booths and tables, they offer counter seating. Also, the Diner serves lunch and early dinner (starting at 3pm) and, they do serve alcohol. For sure thought I had already reviewed this diner as I've been on many occasions, but there's a lot to love here! It's your classic greasy spoon kind of diner with an amazing staff/family and extensive menu. All day breakfast, which is key, includes benedicts, omelettes, eggs, pancakes, and more. There's some greek style specialties on the menu along with a robust list of sandwiches and wraps for lunches. On my last visit there were flies everywhere...and that's the vibe I kind of associate with this spot. A little hungover, a little buggy, a little hot...just generally not very glamorous. Which is not the point! And yet, the flies did bug me as I was stone cold sober. Anyways - great spot for quick coffee and breakfast and often less busy than it's neighbor, Highland Park Diner. Overall I had a pretty good experience at south wedge. The food is normal diner food nothing really to write home about though. The food was more warm than hot and it was a little bland for my particular taste but still a decent cheap meal. The one thing that was great about south wedge was the service! I've been back several times now and the verdict is in that this is an underrated, hidden gem! I adore SWD for any and all meals. Firstly, it's still my go-to for a standby biscuits and gravy breakfast. Additionally, they have such variety on their menu with their Vietnamese dishes too like pho, noodles, etc. It adds a really special touch to their menu, including a 5-star stellar salsa with unique heat and flavor you can't get anywhere else. Put it on any and every omelet - it will make your breakfast. Their Irish benedict is another favorite dish of mine - homemade corned beef, super tender, packed with rich flavor and so hearty. The SWD Special soup - Hu Tieu Dac Biet has such a good broth and all the seafood imaginable in it if you're looking for something to warm you up. I like that they have lunch/dinner options too - I always say yes to turkey club sandwiches and patty melts. They have great fries - golden brown and crispy, but tender inside. The menu is huge. It's the most perfect old hole in the wall. Delicious breakfast (all day breakfast too), reasonably priced (impossible to find these days), and great staff who clearly respect the differences in people. This is not your overpriced bougie place. It's a classic old diner!! My family has been swinging in this place for 10+ years and it never disappoints. I've only ever done breakfast here so can't speak of other menu items. Salsa is fresh and deeellliccious!!! And they serve mimosas (and beer). They were super accommodating when we ordered two different Benedict's and asked to have one of each on two plates. The corned beef hash is house made and the sausage gravy was well flavored. Starting with the sausage links, simply delicious, poached eggs came in a cup of water and both yokes broken mixed in with the water ! The home fries where deep fried actual potatoes skin shavings dripping with grease, and no potatoes. The toast was cold and probably pre maid and sitting under a heat lamp. TOTAL DISGUSTING!!!! This is probably one of my favorite diners to go to for breakfast. I always get the same thing, sometimes I get something new, but always go back to egg benedict with corned beef hash. They're corned beef hash is house made and it is so good! A lot of diners use canned corned beef hash and it just isn't as good. I'm actually not sure if they're hollandaise sauce is house made or pre made. I've never bothered to ask, because it's really good. It's not too thick or too runny, but nice and creamy and tasty. The same waitresses are always there every time I go and have been there for quite some time. They're very friendly and pleasant, but maybe just a bit on the slow side. They seem very tired and it gives the place somewhat of run down atmosphere. But with some simple renovations and maybe a few new waitresses, it would for sure liven it up. read more

I ordered the Ranch Omelette with bacon, sausage, and cheese. The staff was friendly. I don't recall her name but the older woman was very attentive and was good at remembering our order. This is our go to diner. Why, because the food is hot, fresh, and the service is great. Nothing fancy or out of the box as far as menu items but we always leave with a smile. Unfortunately the food is not nearly as much fun as that concept. I was all in love with the place based on the reviews and the description, so I rushed along expecting to find everything much better than at Highland Park (where the owner used to work, I guess). All I found was higher prices for less impressive food. I don't even remember what my date had, but it was dry and chalky. It was also over $10, which she was dismayed about, because she doesn't usually pay that much and I remember having to take her to Sticky Lips to cheer her up since we'd driven all the way to Rochester for this place. As for me, I got the famous Walnut (or whatever) French Toast, and again, very dry. The syrup was just too sweet and chemical tasting. The toast was both tasteless and dry and even a little burned, and again, overpriced. Why then do I give 3 stars to this really negative experience? Well simply because I always give 3 or more to family businesses as a show of support. But if my experience here was anything to go by, this place will need a lot of support, and a revamp in quality. read more
