Southdale has come a long way over the past few years, and it shows. The updates and renovations have made a noticeable difference, and the mall feels much more modern and intentional than it used to. There's no longer a shortage of recognizable brand-name stores, which makes it feel more like a true shopping destination again. There is a mix of luxury stores and every-day shopping which brings good value. That said, there are still a few odd, lesser-known shops scattered throughout with inconsistent or unusual hours, which can be a little confusing. The food options are decent. The traditional food court is a bit of a letdown, but there are better standalone options throughout the mall like Rustica Bakery, Pezzo Pizza, Yumi Sushi, People's Organic, and others. Having Kowalski's grocery store on-site is also a big plus and adds convenience. Entertainment-wise, there's more to do now with options like an escape room and Dave & Buster's. The mall is spacious, never feels overly crowded, and has plenty of parking, which makes it easy and stress-free to visit. Overall, the updates are a very welcome change. Really disappointed by this mall. It was difficult to navigate because of escalator closures, and there were a lot of empty storefronts and construction happening. There were not many stores I was interested in going into. There was no directory- you had to use your phone to try and figure out where stores were. Overall vibe was just sad. I was there during a weekday and it was deserted. I hope once the construction is done that more stores go in, and it picks up a little, but I would not go back. read more

I worked at Herbergers in Southdale back in 2011-2013. It felt a lot more mall like back then. Almost all the stores that were there then were either moved, [most of them] closed or downsized. A lot of emptiness now. Used to have a food court now only a few options. I know they are changing to be more of a high-end mall but so far the stores aren't very appealing to me. The overall vibe of the mall is usually pretty dead whenever I go. Generally not enough interesting stores to just go and browse, not even the ones coming soon. This used to be a good mall to shop and to spend time at. Just recently that the mall made some major changes like all high end stores that are pricey and a grocery store that's small and expensive. There food court is a laugh as they only have one food outlet and two others near there. This mall is not an interest anymore. They need stores with reasonable prices. read more

Many of the ships ate closed up today and there doesn't seem to be a lot of people inside the malls or any of the open stores, including Macy's. It's the most dead I have ever seen a mall that's not been permanently shut down. Dismal shopping options here. read more

I mall-walk frequently there and overall some very nice stores are open now and opening but I also wonder about how wise the whole concept is especially with The Galleria right next door. Their food court is pretty much dead and on the lower level in the center of the mall they took out the escalator and stairs on one side. Several times I've been there the up escalator on the other side was shut down with one of the elevators out of service as well so if people wanted to get to the second level they basically needed to walk up two flights of stairs. Not exactly enticing for many folks. Hopefully their foot traffic will improve but now when I go in there most stores don't have any customers in them. read more

Southdale Center is a mall in Edina. If you'd like an alternative to spending hours walking around the Mall of America down the road to either shop or figure out where you had parked your car, come here. Macy's anchors the mall as its major department store. It's funny how I ended up being a huge Macy's fan after I left Minnesota. It has pretty good sales. I got hooked on the Style and Co. line of clothing. I still don't have a need to buy any more pieces, as I am still wearing a lot of them! It also sells Kipling handbags, which I absolutely love. There is an AMC if you want to take in a movie. It's close by to The Cheesecake Factory, PF Chang's, and Buffalo Wild Wings. It's the perfect combination of dining and movie-going. I was thrilled that there is now a Smashburger at the mall, which is one of my favourite burger joints that I like to frequent when I am in the States. I will need to eat there when I'm not full from shovelling food from The Cheesecake Factory. This mall has stores that suits my needs. Gap is bright and had decent deals at the back of the store. I was thrilled to visit the Chatime for my bubble tea fix. I also spotted Starbucks, Caribou Coffee, and See's Candies. There are also vending machines scattered around the mall that piqued my interest. I was playing with the touchscreen on the Proactiv vending machine. It's cool to get your skin care needs with a few taps. I also wanted to get some Mini Melts ice cream, but I was so full from lunch that I had to pass. This mall has a Hockey Lodge store, which is the official store carrying Minnesota Wild merchandise. If you don't want to make the trek to St. Paul, come here. There is plenty of parking. Love this shopping center as an exercise in moderation: sizable enough to have my standby mall classics (Gap, Banana, Loft, etc.), but smaller than the gargantuan Mall of America. I try to do my online returns and a bit of shopping here when I'm in the area, since the malls in the NE suburbs are pretty run-down post-pandemic and lack the stores I shop at. For my fellow lactating folks, there is now a truly private, dedicated space to nurse or pump that is not a bathroom (although they have a few family restrooms too!). It's all off the Dining Pavilion in the 2nd floor next to the restrooms. It personally makes me more relaxed while shopping to know baby and I will have a quiet place with a comfy chair, sink for hand washing, and clean-looking changing table to collect ourselves and nurse. Look for the frosted glass door label "Nursing" just past the family restrooms. read more

Meh. Not many stores, restaurants are closing. Makeup at Sephora was dirty and picked over.

This is our local mall & we love it, but there have been incidents recently (2020-2023) that need to be resolved. There's a bus stop at Lifetime, which is part of the mall, & the security has said that there's more crime now because of increase of people looking to cause harm or steal or deal drugs. Currently, there are only security officers who have to call the police if there's a crime. There was a random shooting recently, the cops did a good job responding, but they never found the person, so no charges were made. Teenagers like to goto mall, but, unfortunately there have been several incidents of bikes, backpacks, & coats being stolen and drug deals involving kids under 18. Additionally, the layout is odd & random. Some restaurants don't have mall entrance & elevators are few and far between, making it difficult for elderly or disabled. The parking lots are either completely full or empty, and drivers cruise any which way when entering or leaving. Simon needs to hire some capable engineers, managers to bring in local events & activities, police officers & address these problems before the whole mall goes to s*^%! read more

Southdale Center has pretty much everything you'll need in a mall. In addition to a nice foot court south dale has a number of chain restaurants attached to it including Smashburger, Qdoba, P.F. Just the worst? Has no tie to the community in which they are located. I would never go to this mall!

I was also at the mall yesterday and meet the same person as Ron S. She was doing her job and probably was still frustrated by her encounter with me and my walking partner! Rather than rail at her, my frustration is that the Mall has not made clear anywhere on their site that they are not open early for walkers. And there are many postings, pre-COVID, that would lead you to believe otherwise. We came in the entrance by the restaurants, unaware they were open early only for an early Apple launch. We were fine walking until we were checking for a P.O. box outside. We encountered the same woman at the Government Center entrance and a more formal guard at the South entrance, both before 10:30. Both were adamant there was no walking until 11, contrary to anything else I had found on line. read more

What to say about a shopping center that never seems busy enough to keep the employees awake? Seriously, in most stores in this mall, the general vibe is somewhere between lethargy and comatose. It could be the stench of yet another Abercrombie & Fitch....it could be the glassy-eyed teens with too many gadgets and not enough true friends.....it might just be the way the Ben & Jerry's stand seems so out of place, like it was on its way to Valley Fair and got lost....but, I just don't get the big whoopee of Southdale Center for shopping. It's even "burbier" than it was before. Today was the first time in over a decade that I went past the AMC cinema to venture into the mall. We were waiting in line for a screening, so I decided to order Subway for dinner. It's not where it was before, and it took more time than it should to find it. There's a Herberger's where other stores leading into the food court used to be. I've no reason to venture past the cinemas again, so I won't be. I'm a fan for the day. I rarely travel out this way, but it had the stores I wanted to visit. I really like the open feel of Southdale and it's not overly cluttered with all the kiosks that every other mall has. They have a lot of decent stores and alright anchor stores. Quite a few typical west suburb chain restaurants. The only bad experience I've ever had was almost getting mowed down by a self important, selfish overly entitled mom with one of those ginormous strollers forcing her way through the J. Crew entrance expecting everyone to move because she had a child which she pointed out. What a jerk. I'll rate this 3.5 stars, but I'll round up to 4 since the average right now is 3. I love shopping and this is a nice place to shop. It has many of my favorite shops including GAP, Banana Republic, and Express. I went on a Tuesday afternoon, and it wasn't very busy. I guess that's the case for many malls in Minnesota. Many of the malls I go to in California are much busier than the ones here. Not complaining though cause I'd rather shop in a slow store than fighting over people and getting into each others way. The GAP store is pretty big, but there weren't a lot of sale items when I went. Nice store layout though. Express was nicely organized, workers were very helpful and attentive. Fitting rooms were nicely kept together. I also stopped by a tailoring store on the 2nd store, which was pretty good. It's ran by these nice asian ladies. I wanted to get my pants patched up and they charged my $5 + tax and took less than 30 minutes. Pretty cheap and fast service. They also have an Apple store, which is great for bringing in your mac to checkup and Sperry, which many malls don't have. Southdale Center is also located right next to the galleria, which is more high-end, but it's nice there's two shopping centers right next to each other. Overall, it's a nice little mall to go to. I'd recommend it, there's an AMC there to catch a flick too. There is a little bit of construction though going on and stores moving in and out. Check it out! read more

Shopping here for years. Open light marble skylight atmosphere throughout. Sad the rent got so high the shoe repair outfit that's been there for years is gone but I enjoy their franchise shops Apple, Dry Goods, VS, Aveda, AMC USA nice one & updated & often busy so plan ahead & park nearby on ramp or in lit near theater if it's evening; Brow Art, Minerals, Cheesecake Factory, wish it had a bookstore but there is one up the street, Many other shops & wide open space & pleasing peaceful atmosphere. Never super busy but active consistently weekdays in the mornings is my favorite time to go. Nothing too unique here but 4 stars for atmosphere & quiet & it's nicer/cleaner/brighter than your average mall for sure. read more

Back in my days in High School everyone from Bloomington Kennedy High would come up here to catch a movie or fool around in the arcade or just hang around at the bus stop aint nothing else to do! this used to be the kick it spot to meet up with ppl not intill southdale did a policy you cant walk with a group of 4 and more like a ball that's when it was going south for us But hey they remodeled it don't look ghetto anymore its quiet but to be honest I don't like this mall its to much open space now and to uptight I come here for the movies im in and out or for cheese cake factory other than that I don't F with place anymore its a mall! oh and I saw the other day that david busters is opening in here that would be interesting see how that goes read more

I'm not sure what the point of an appointment with Santa is? 7-730 implies we'll be in with the Big Man at 7 and leave ourselves sometime to pick out pictures, chat with him, etc. Alas, here I wait while my family went for a walk. I may only get to Southdale every few years and it seems different each time. I do believe it was more grand and interesting about three remakes before. On this last visit during a weekday afternoon it was exceptionally slow. I checked the location directory for a store and eventually figured out the signage system which seems more confusing than helpful. The mall was big stuff in the mid 1950s but now it's just another cookie cutter with a weird shape and no really unique stores or merchandise to make me return. read more

This was THE place to hang out in 7th grade, no joke. Our moms used to drop us off and we'd somehow find enough to do in the few hours that we were there. 1991, I do not miss you. Most of the time Southdale is completely empty (except for the restaraunts and movie theater area) and there are no stores here that are worth going to. I actually will drive out to the Mall of America or Ridgedale to go shopping and I live 5 minutes from Southdale. There are parts of the mall (I'm looking at YOU corner entrance by JCPenney) that I feel less safe walking through than I would a dark alley. Sketchy and just plain pointless. Oh Southdale...you've really let yourself go. I remember way back in the day when you were actually one of the cool "Dales" to hang out at. Now you're just a shell of your former self and really just a place that I go to watch movies or occasionally eat. Maybe it's just that you're being outshined by the hipper Galleria across the street but you are in dire need of a complete overhaul. Most of the remaining stores in the mall are just scattered around the place surrounded by sad empty store fronts. I know that they've finally finished remodeling the old Express guys' store but it can get confusing when you move around a store to three different locations in the less than five months. Someone also needs to figure out what to do with the third floor shopping area which just feels weird and out of place...and reeks of Subway bread. I'd really hate to see this place suffer the same fate as Brookdale but the owners really need to hit the refresh button on this property. Southdale is the first mall ever opened I bet very few people actually know that! The place has gone through quite a bit I Would say changing out their main headliner stores throughout the years right at the moment they have Herbergers, Macys, JCP, a few restaurants to pick from. I like the recent remodel of more upscale stores coming through that you can't find as many locations in Minnesota without having to go through the crowds of people like Mall of America would have. Its also nice because you can find a better selection of goods too without the crowds. The movie theater is a plus esp after a good shopping trip. My favorite stores that you can find in the mall include Madewell, H&M, Sperry Top-Sider, Dry goods etc They also just redid their food court so its not just the lonely subway anymore. read more

I'm surprised at all the bad reviews for Southdale. I love this place. I, too hate crowded malls. Even when I lived in Bloomington, I only went to MOA maybe once a year. This place has just about everything I'm looking for - clothing stores, book store, movie theatre, and of course, the Apple store. I do think that Southdale has lost some good stores - I miss Waldenbooks - and the food court area is looking pretty pathetic, but the food courts are suffering because of all the restaurants. The mall itself is usually clean and bright. I often see security guards walking around. I feel much safer after dark at Southdale than around the MOA parking ramps. Interesting tidbit: a guy by the name of Victor Gruen designed Southdale and Southdale was the first enclosed mall in the country. This is the layout that many modern malls are based upon. Hmph. People really seem to hate Southdale, but it is my go-to place. The only other mall I go to is Ridgedale. I HATE Mall of America and Knollwood is useless. At Southdale I can go to a movie, get my clothes altered, get new clothes, pick up a cheap bite to eat, pick up a more expensive meal and hit up the Marshall's. I've been spending a lot of time at Southdale lately. In fact, my wallet is probably cringing at the thought of Southdale right now. Anyhow, before this past week it had been quite a while since I had been to Southdale...and it was a huge surprise to see the new re-vamp! Southdale was getting really outdated and was in serious need of a facelift, anyone could see that. But the team that did Southdale's remodel went above and beyond, it is absolutely beautiful. The store fronts are renewed, everything looks modern, shiny, and attractive. The new food court is awesome (there is a Panda Express, no lie) and it makes for SUCH an improved shopping experience. There are even some new stores and some stores moving around and re-doing layouts. I am so pleased with the improved atmosphere. Southdale is in such a great location; not as far as Mall of America. It also has a lot of great stores so I can avoid MOA on the weekends when it's more of a pain than anything else. read more

Burbier than ever! Good go to spot when your not in the mood for mall of america. They have nice selection of restaurants and most of the stores you'd find at bigger mall. It's very open and easy to navigate and a new food court. Nice that security drives around parking lot so you can be assured your car is safe to. The nations 1st indoor shopping mall that seems to go through boom/bust/reinvention cycles. Currently coming out of one of the bust times. Place can seem a litle quiet and lonely but judging from the signs, they've got some big plans for upgrades. The new Herbergers is a good first step. read more
