So I just completed my outbound flight from LAX to DFW. I typically fly United because I'm a…read morelifetime permanent gold member with over 1 million miles flown on United metal. Thus why am I flying spirit? My wife has a business meeting out here and her company put her on Delta with a $500 plus ticket. Spirit on the other hand, has a near identical flight itinerary that costs $170! United airlines was over 600 for a similar flight. Under these circumstances I'm going to bite the bullet, put a paper bag over my head with eye holes, poked out and fly spirit. I used to think spirit was a healthy cut below Southwest. And I detest and refuse flying Southwest. Why is that? The last time I flew spirit was LAX into Florida, at check-in. I had the most annoying counter staff in LAX. I mumbled and silently thought that never again, never ever ever will I fly spirit. Well, when I'm looking at over 600 bucks and getting close to 70% of a discount, then I'll try this spirit. Hold my breath and just suck it up while saving. Just under 450 bucks or a ton. I was careful too change everything from my usual baggage into something that qualifies for free Carry-on . I think it has to be 18 in by 14 by 8 in. My bag is a little bit smaller than that. I was careful this time to read the guidelines for how to fly spirit. I checked in online and printed my boarding pass with a redundant email copy of my boarding pass. Printing a boarding pass at the airport Might cost $25! So I found my experience at LAX check in, all the way through arrival and exit from DFW to have been surprisingly smooth. All of the spirits staff encountered were reasonably polite and efficient. The waiting area and my seat on the aircraft were clean and in good condition. What's not to like? There was no choice of seat location at my price level. No Roller aboard baggage without paying a fee. Shocking to me was even getting water on the aircraft in flight costs money! Fortunately being suspicious I brought an empty water bottle that I refilled on the inside past TSA. So I had water. What's not to like further ? I had a middle seat and something like row 28. Not the best and probably functionally one of the worst seats. The back of the seat was scalloped away with no entertainment system, no large fold down tray to work with or place beverages, food or whatever? On my right the window seat had a really overweight person, on the aisle seat to my left was kind of a normal guy who really kept to himself. Shockingly, I didn't have problems with either encroaching over the armrest invading my space. I was respectful of their space as well, no contact at the knees.. I found that I could extend my legs under the seat ahead of me. But I found I could not recline! So the seats were as unitarian and basic with actually just enough soft give and fabric to be okay. To be sure United seats are superior even in basic coach. I usually have premier Plus, and every now and then business class or Polaris. Spirit was not exactly the most comfortable, but it was actually a very acceptable experience. So why did I bestow four stars? In spite of all these points of weakness, the huge kicker was 70% savings on the price for solidly competent service, granted it's barely tolerable... But I am so impressed with 70% savings! It just floors me to save this much, which is really hard to get with United... Or any other full service major airline. So will I fly Spirit again? I guess I have to confess that it depends on the price differential. I am quite willing to pay 20% more to fly United. But I am not willing to pay 250% more versus another airline like spirit. Four stars with all of them essentially awarded for dominating on price!

Terrible customer service and misleading insurance process…read more I specifically purchased travel insurance that advertised the ability to cancel for any reason with an 80% reimbursement. I called on Tuesday regarding a flight scheduled for Friday. The live agent told me I had to cancel at least 24 hours before departure to qualify. Based on that, I was instructed to call back Thursday to process the refund. When I called back on Thursday, I was informed that I would only be eligible for a reservation credit, not a refund. This directly contradicted what I was previously told. I requested that they review or pull the recorded calls where I confirmed eligibility, but my concern was not addressed. The inconsistent information and lack of accountability made the process frustrating and misleading. This makes me afraid to use Spirit Airlines for traveling. Buyers should be very cautious and confirm all refund and insurance terms in writing before purchasing.

Although we both have Global Entry, we were randomly selected to go through regular security screening. At first, we had no reason to question it. When we first approached the TSA PreCheck personnel, she told us that our digital boarding passes did not show PreCheck and that we needed to go through regular security. To save time, we went to the American Airlines desk and requested paper boarding passes. When we brought them back, the TSA personnel told us that she had just learned that we had been "randomly" marked for regular security screening. We then went to the regular security checkpoint, which had a much longer line and took approximately four times longer than the PreCheck line. When we finally reached the metal detectors, however, we were instructed to line up for the X-ray scanner instead. The woman directly in front of us was allowed to go through the regular metal detector, while we were directed to the scanner. Then, people behind us were also sent to the scanner, while other passengers were allowed to continue through the metal detector. At that point, we began noticing a very disturbing pattern. The people being held back and directed to the scanner appeared to be African American, Asian, or Hispanic, while the passengers being allowed through the metal detector appeared to be white. We understand that TSA screening can be random, but seeing this pattern unfold right in front of us was extremely difficult to ignore. It felt like blatant racial profiling. After this experience, I now question whether we were truly "randomly" selected in the first place. We have taken more than 10 flights since getting Global Entry, and this was the first time we were ever "randomly" selected for regular security screening. We genuinely believed it was simply a random screening until we experienced what happened at the security checkpoint. Because of the additional screening, we lost valuable time during our connection. We had only about 1 1/2 hours between flights, and by the time we finally cleared security, the boarding closing time printed on our boarding passes had just passed. We panicked and ran to the nearest American Airlines desk. Thankfully, a staff member checked our flight and kindly assured us that the flight was delayed and that boarding had just started. We then ran from Terminal D to Terminal B, including taking the airport train, and barely made it in time for boarding. We had no opportunity to use any of the airport amenities, restaurants, or shops, so unfortunately, we cannot comment on those. What we can comment on is how upsetting and unacceptable it was to feel that we were treated differently because of our race. No traveler should have to experience this. I sincerely hope DFW and TSA will look into how passengers are being selected and directed through these screening lines.

Frontier Flight 229 -- Cancun to DFW…read more My experience on Frontier Flight 229 from Cancun to DFW on August 16 was extremely disappointing. I understand that mechanical issues happen, and we were initially told the plane would take about 15 minutes to repair. However, we finished boarding around 11:00 AM and didn't actually depart until approximately 1:00 PM. During that entire time, we remained onboard with inadequate air conditioning, making the wait extremely uncomfortable. While we waited, we were offered only about half a cup of water. Once we finally departed, the flight attendants proceeded to offer drinks and snacks for purchase--nothing complimentary, not even a small bag of peanuts. Given the circumstances and the extended time passengers were kept onboard in uncomfortable conditions, I found this incredibly disappointing. Unfortunately, the attitude of some of the flight attendants made the experience even worse. Their communication with passengers came across as condescending rather than understanding or reassuring. I understand that Frontier is a budget airline, and I don't expect luxury. But basic courtesy, communication, and consideration for passengers during a significant delay should not be too much to ask. Overall, this was a terrible experience, and I sincerely hope I don't have to fly Frontier again.
