It's a brewery pretty much walking distance from my house. That's a positive and is probably worth 3 stars just for that. But wait, there's more. The beer. Yeah, it's awfully good. I mean, it is really good! Everything I've had on tap has tasted like "just one more please" and their 6 packs are available to take home (as are growlers). Sounds good, right? Keep reading. The atmosphere is ideal for congregating, drinking, chatting, just chilling. Outdoor space abounds with plenty of tables. Staff is super friendly and attentive. I ordered some wings, "whiskey infused hot honey" They taste good, BUT..they dont tell you the "hot" is ghost pepper! Like the third hottest pepper out there... Wow what a great craft beer brewery the new Southern Barrel Brewing Company is in easy to access Bluffton, South Carolina. We loved craft beer and finally stopped to try the brewery - thanks to Ben's recommendation. The facility and brewing area is expansive, indoor, outdoor, and nice bar area with separate table tops. When you enter the lobby you will see the awards Southern Barrel received for their craft beers. The building is airy with chic industrial factory look. We sat at the bar and sampled some of Southern Barrel's tastiest craft beers. Our bar tender host was great with a growing lunch crowd. We enjoyed a quick lunch - the kitchen was down so the lunch menu was limited but no matter - our sliders and Cole slaw were delicious and totally complimented our craft beer flights. This place had the look and feel of it being hired out to some National restaurant chain to design a brewery. Nothing about this place felt authentic or had the energy of a place that people here cared about the beer being made. I love going to a brewery, ordering a beer at the counter and then walking around inside and out. This place would only serve me if I had a table or sat at the bar. I've had several of their beers prior to making the trip here and they were good but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here again. Gave it 3 stars as corporate sellout looking breweries may only be a pet peeve of mine. read more

Love that this place has bingo, veggie options, and even a liquor license if you come with people in your party who do not like beer (me). I breathed a sigh of relief knowing I could still get a tequila lemonade. Also love the "hook on the ring" game outdoors. Chef came out to check how I'd like my "beyond burger" sliced over my salad. Also, we were told it's self seating outside, but after popping a squat no one approached us so we had to go see what was up. My salad turned out to be pretty disappointing and measly, but this place does serve its purpose for what it is and the fact of the matter is that most people hit up breweries for the beer, not the food. Their beer is very good. I believe their signature brew is Damn Yankee which is an IPA with an ABV of 7% and pretty good Beer Advocate ranking. They also have many other beers including Saisons, Pilsners, Lagers and flavored beers. Nice to have local brewing with great food, service and entertainment. We were there during comedy night. I can actually say the comedians all sucked, but that was so cool because it made it so real. Now I know I have a future doing comedy at Southern Barrel only because I also know they have a low standard of quality entertainment. Their food is really comfort food and done well enough to fill you up without making you feel as though you had something nourishing. Enough said. Love this place!! read more

We stopped at Southern Barrel on our way to Hilton Head. Great brewery. Really good beer selection. I got a flight - four tasters. All top notch. The Duck Bacon Wontons are fantastic. Also had the Yankee Teriyaki Sesame Boneless Wings and Firkin Spuds. Wing sauce was really good. The platter of loaded fries was huge. We couldn't even finish it. Great atmosphere and service. This is for takeout only! Brewery is absolutely gorgeous from outside. Located in a strip mall, it is very easily founded due to how beautiful the building is. It is definitely a trendy little brewery. The beers are delicious, my husband tasted it while at one of the restaurants and ended up picking up a 12 pack to take home for friends. read more

This place is awesome. Love the vibe and the staff, great place to chill with friends or have a low key date night. My husband and I are vegan and it's one of the VERY few places we can eat in, in the area. The chef came out and told us all of the items that can be made vegan and we just keep coming back. I will stay the waitstaff aren't all on the same page about what is or isn't vegan though so mistakes have been made. Nonetheless it doesn't keep us from coming back. They're happy to make it better I just hate seeing food wasted. read more

Cool atmosphere but since it's a "brewing co" The food options are limited. I assumed that there would be typical bar-type food but it's almost like a fusion style (i.e., Duck Wontons, nachos with jalapeño relish and chipotle crema, etc. and about 1/3 of the items have the jalapeño relish which doesn't work if you are unable to eat spicy foods-even the grilled cheese has it on it). Maybe they'll let patrons order from the kids menu? Water is self-service from a jug with plastic cups. Unless your sole purpose is to enjoy beer, there are better options nearby for dinner. Btw, no soap in the women's restroom; only hand sanitizer. Most likely will not return. read more

This place is huge!!! Who would have thought such a large craft beer location would find a home in Bluffton, SC. And I'm not sure of how it came about but I was sure glad my friend brought me there. The taproom has a large bar area with plenty of bar stools to have quick access to the bartenders and that huge beer selection. We lucked into an amazing can beer special. They were offering "Damn Yankee" 6packs for $5 each. Yes please. Already I loved the name and awesome can art (sunburnt tourist with zinc covered nose, in a Hawaiian shirt)...but if you drink craft beer, you know what a bargain they were offering. I asked for a quick sample, as they had this beer on draft. Loved it's balance of hop to citrus. Ordered one for our dinner and reserved a case to go. My friend and I split an appetizer and a burger. Our 1st choice of dip wasn't available so we got the "off menu" spinach and artichoke dip. Ma, I would slip that next time. The burger, on the other hand, was delicious! It's large so dive in if you are hungry. For us, splitting was just right. We had asked for sweet potato fries (on menu as an option) but unfortunately they were out for the night. No worries, the regular fries were also super tasty. But get this, because of the misunderstanding, the bartender offered us a sampling of the onion rings also. They also didn't disappoint. I'm new to the area I was looking for a new place. They sure as heck did not make me feel welcome. Pretty much ignored me as I sat at the bar. Hopefully the owner can review tapes and watch out one of the employees talked with friends for 10 minutes straight when she was the only person behind the bar. The other person had got off to eat. No one ever checked back with me to see how things were. Nor do they get me the additional napkins that I had asked for. First time coming to Southern Barrel which I always thought was interesting because I have been in area for quite sometime and haven't herd much about it... *****CAUTION****** Walked in and wanted to watch a football game and was told that they couldn't put it on one of there 10 TV's. Next i invited some friends down and struggled to get any type of service... one of the brunette bartenders was the rudest coldest person I have ever met. After 10 rude remarks in between her texting and doing about everything else she could do besides bartending. The menu is the smallest menu in bluffton and could be the priciest for the quality of food... $17 for 8 below average undercooked wings... the pretzel was stale. There are a lot of things that I love about the tiny town of Bluffton, South Carolina, and their Southern Barrel Brewery is one of them. Folks listen up because I'm going to say this loud and clear for everyone reading, this brewery is a great spot for anyone looking for a nice local craft beer in the low country. Many locals will tell you that Southern Barrel is an absolute must during your low country experience. I'm sad to say that Bluffton only has two breweries, but their beer is so delicious that you won't even care. Southern Barrel is warm and inviting, and once you walk inside you immediately get the sense and feeling of nostalgia, like you've been there before. It also helps that the staff working there is very friendly. While there are so many different beers on tap, and available to take home, I would definitely recommend the Damn Yankee. If you're looking for a good IPA, this beer is the choice for you. They also have a delicious sour called the Wild Bramble, which is also sold in a six pack to go!
