A very good example of Western NC/Lexington bbq. Both the sauce and the slaw (red slaw, no mayo, thank you very much) are a little heavy on the black pepper which works well. You can't get outside brown on the chopped bbq but it's well cooked and flavorful nonetheless. Standard bbq sides. The hush puppies and onion rings are both keepers. I'm less sure about the Brunswick stew. A little thinner than I like but the real problem was the onion. There was just too much of it and it gave the stew an odd flavor. Service was very friendly and decor is Southern auto racing chic. There's a good mix of pickups and nice cars in the parking lot. Potions are VERY generous and well priced. The restaurant smelled the part, but the chopped pork lacked flavor. The Banana pudding is a steer clear as there is more flavor in the banana slices than the pudding. Traveling south for a vacation and being we are from a rival state of BBQ we decided to try Southern BBQ on the 4th of July. Our server was very hospitable and had a witty sense of humor which we very much appreciated. We ordered a Chopped BBQ sandwich, Sliced BBQ, Hushpuppies, Onion Rings and 2-Kids Burgers. Hushpuppies by far are the best we have had with a hint of sweetness. Onion Rings well fried. Kiddos Burgers were just that. The Chopped BBQ was by far better than the Sliced BBQ and needed sauce as it was a bit dry. I'd give it 3.5 but can't and we did go on the 4th so giving the restaurant a break on my sandwich as they were slammed with to-go orders. Pretty unassuming place but lots of cars our front. Everyone greeted us warmly and with a smile. Turns out it is a true family run joint and it was all siblings and parents. Nascar memorabilia themed place. Menu looked like pretty standard bbq. I wanted to try the ribs but they were out (not their fault, server kindly told us its a supply issue. Just can't get good ribs. So no biggie.) I had sliced pork and turkey with slaw and beans. My wife had the sliced turkey based on server's recommendation. Food came out fast and hot. Very good bbq but the turkey was amazing. Would not have ordered that without server rec. She was great- attentive, friendly and talkative. We would have tried the homemade banana pudding but we were stuffed. Got lucky with this one. I'm staying at the Hampton Inn off of the interstate. Surrounded by fast food joints here. I actually like Wendy's and Bojangles, just wasn't in the mood. Found this little spot and you never know what you'll get when you're in unfamiliar waters. The place has a southern feel, NASCAR memorabilia everywhere; old school stuff - old Texaco Havoline hood; a pick of Alan Kulwicki; Dale Jarrett; Mark Martin - sort of like walking back into 1985 -- which is cool because that's when I graduated high school and I'm a Northern boy who is a lifetime nascar fan. Ok, I digress, sorry- so the food. The food was great. Got the pulled pork, their sauce is excellent t and the pork tender. Their cole slaw has a nice mild vinegar taste, not the heavy mayo slaw. Potato salad was solid. The ladies working in here are that perfect blend of southern hospitality and genuine good people. Service was exceptional. I looked through the reviews and noticed the one star guy has left 5 reviews in his life and they're all negative. He lives in Midland Texas, so I'd be pissed too if I were him. While driving from Greenville, SC it was getting close to 3p and I was STARVING! I stopped at a gas station to take advantage of $3.45 a gallon gas! Thanks SC and right in the parking lot was Southern Barbecue. It looked like a simple building, nothing really called out for me to eat here, except of course my tummy rumbling and my low blood sugar. I thought sweet tea, hushpuppies, even if it's average, I can survive. I walked in said hello to the nice ladies. Sat down and ordered a small tray, it came with one side, baked beans! You can't eat BBQ without slaw, so I ordered a small side of slaw and some sweet tea! Sweet tea delish! Hot hushpuppies, not hushpuppies sitting under a heat lamp. Very hot baked beans. Red, vinegar slaw. Tasty, smoky BBQ. I was a happy camper, pleasantly surprised, it was a million times better than I expected. I even took a bottle of their BBQ sauce home and my lunch and the BBQ sauce were very inexpensive. I can't wait to return! read more

We stopped in Spartanburg, South Carolina for gas and found a quaint spot nearby called Southern Barbecue, via Yelp, of course. (Yelpers are truly the best!) No matter when I stop in this place is always packed with customers but non the less I always feel like I'm the only customer because of the eager and prompt wait staff who is always friendly and ready to serve. This business is attached to a gas station but once you have a seat inside you will forget about the location. This restaurant is definitely a five star restaurant. The food is soooooo good. It's a family run business. We are staying at the Hampton Inn off the I-85 exit 67 and of course u have the usual , Mc Donald's, Burger King, just nasty fast food. When we saw this restaurant we were so excited. We ordered ribs, beans, French fries , fritters, and I had pulled pork. Prices are great they actually good go up in price and still make the sales.
