Got food with my wife and daughter at Trophy Brewing Pop Up in Raleigh. They're vegetarian, I'm not, but always looking for good vegetarian/vegan spots we can go together. Food was fantastic. Update: After seeing the business owner's response, I went to their IG and looked at pics of the food they advertise. It looks nothing like what we received. I wish I had taken pics to show the vast difference. If the food in their pics matched what we were served, I assume my review would be much different. That said, I stand by my comments and still think $25 for one small scoop of "beef" is not a great value. For future events, please prioritize quality control and maybe market your menu differently? For example: - Sandwich Combo (1 sandwich and 1 side for $XX) - Southern Platter (choose 1 meat and 3 sides for $XX) - Meat only (1 meat for $XX) - Sides only (3 sides for $XX) It would be more straightforward and less confusing for customers if the menu was written that way. The people ahead of us mentioned that they were at another event in Berkeley and completely sold out before they got to the front, so they wanted to make sure they tried it today. The line moved extremely slowly; they eventually felt bad and went around offering free cans of kombucha for the wait. When I finally got to the front, I asked a question about the menu. They had brisket listed for $25, I wanted to know if it came with a side or if I had to buy them separately. The woman confused me. At first, she mentioned that I could get three sides with the brisket for $30, but then she clarified that it was actually $25 for brisket only and that I would have to pay $10 extra for three sides. I explained that I only wanted brisket and mashed potatoes, not three full sides. I needed more time to think, so I let my friend order first. My friend ordered a spicy fried chicken sandwich, which was also listed at $25. They told her that it came with one side, so she chose mac and cheese. Then, she asked why I wouldn't be able to get brisket and mashed potatoes for $25 instead of paying $35 for brisket and three sides. They told me that I could get one side and brisket for $25. After 40+ minutes of waiting, we were excited to eat. Unfortunately, the food was extremely underwhelming. The brisket was dry, and some pieces had way too much char. The mashed potatoes gave boxed mashed potato vibes, they were unseasoned and bland. I wish they had some sort of sauce to help flavor the meal, but since it was sauceless and bland I only had 3 bites and gave up. My friend enjoyed the chicken sandwich, but she said her mac and cheese tasted like nothing. It was basically plain pasta with no cheese flavoring or seasoning. I sampled it and agreed that it was really bland. They could at least add some salt, pepper, and paprika if they're going to call themselves Southern Fried Vegan. By the time I got to the other spots I wanted to try, both the Omakase and corn dog were sold out. I'm so sad that I wasted so much time waiting in line for overpriced bland food that I didn't even finish. In no particular order, observations: We ordered the "Country Plate" for $30 (one protein ("chickun") and choice of three sides (we got mac and cheese, Jambalaya, and garlic "mashed potatoes") and "Chickun sandwich" for $20 which came with a big slop of "mashed potatoes." Other side options were "deep fried cabbage" and "BBQ beans." Came with a dry (but immersed in sop) roll/bun/piece of white bread. (??) 1) This was something I could've made at home with healthier (even yes, still fried and "southern" style) ingredients. INSTANT MASHED POTATOES - a first (and last) for me. Flavor was off. It was just salty -- and starchy. And oily and brown. 2) Jambalaya was just rice and seemed like packaged grocery store seasoning. No protein or vegetables in the plate we got. 3) "Chickun" protein flavor was good, but again, so is packaged seasoned Gardein from the grocery store. 4) Sloppy and odd presentation - just plopped a bunch of carbs in to-go containers and sauce everywhere on the sandwich. Oh, I saw a pickle and some slaw at one point. 5) Guy operating the stand kept telling each customer that, "only 20 people r.s.v.p.'d on Facebook" to account for his stress, slow-moving line (he said he would've brought more help), and sluggish prep. He wasn't nice or mean when I got to the front, but just seemed sweaty and flustered. Not the best energy when someone's preparing and providing you dinner. 6) Line was about 20 deep when I got there and 20 more or so came after me. We were all stoked for some vegan food as our area is sorely lacking in options (love you, Ziggy's and Shine Cafe... we just need more options). Seems like our stomachs and pocketbooks were taken for a ride. 7) Ha! And the only cutlery available in his to-go plastic packs were forks and knives. It was extra enjoyable to eat instant mashed potatoes with a plastic fork. 8) Smart and Final bags everywhere. Not dissing discount grocery stores, but a) maybe clean up the space before customers arrive and b) again, for what we paid ($55 w/ a tip), this was not quality food or experience. It's 2026. There's tariffs and high gas prices and just life is so expensive right now, so I hope this guy has nice margins but please, sir - reevaluate your business product and presentation. If you're going to promote "Southern Fried" vegan foods, it should at least taste like actual southern food but this was just, no. For a plate that costs $30, to only be given one piece of vegan chicken is crazy. A real southern place would give you at least 2-3. Anyways, it wasn't fried all of the way, the "skin" was coming off and it tasted okay. For the sides, the baked beans were not how southern beans actually taste. Had lots of pepper too in it so it threw off the taste. The Mac and cheese wasn't great either, not lots of cheesy flavor and just really tasted like pepper seasoned elbow pasta. We found Southern Fried Vegan from a Facebook post that gave us a pop up location last week in San Luis Obispo. Even though I'm not strictly vegan, I was inspired by the "comfort food " that was presented in such a loving manner and was not surprised when they literally ran out of food because of the response. My wife had the Spicy Chik'n sandwich and I am a sucker for a well made "shrimp" po boy and was NOT disappointed. Flavors were delicious and the only complaint would be that we got there late and didn't have an opportunity to try everything else that was available. Keep coming back to the Central Coast. At $20 per plate with a main & 4 sides it *would* have been fine, albeit mediocre in taste. At $30 with a main & 3 sides, it's a swindle. I bought for a 4 person group in Pittsburgh because it sounded fun. The entire experience was surprisingly awful. Everything but the main protein tasted completely store-bought, dry, and either over-spiced or under-flavored. The jambalaya was... just rice. No added veggies or protein, just store-bought instant rice and some slight flavoring. The people who appreciate good collard greens all agreed these greens were not done properly. The mashed potatoes were brown from how much spice was added. The beans tasted pretty alright, but again, store-bought. The person taking orders (bless their heart) was definitely new and writing out the full words for each meal item on the plates rather than any kind of short-hand, so I had to keep repeating the order details and confirming for each person. For some reason the whole tent was jammed in front of an eating bench with less than 2 ft. of space in front of it for people to squeeze up to order. All the paper plates immediately started to sag under the dampness of the plate of food. They did NOT have to-go boxes, only aluminum foil to throw over top, which thankfully held for the trip. And as you can see in the picture, (though it *shouldn't* indicate the quality of the food), the menu presentation is illegible at the best of times, unappealingly presented, and covered in grime. I would have given 2 stars out of kindness to a clearly struggling business, especially since they weren't rude, and were clearly trying their best, but... no, in all honesty, there just were not enough redeeming features to warrant it... (This experience is especially disappointing compared to the unrelated vegan seafood popup I tried that was fantastically flavored and fascinating.) read more

Ive been catching these guys when they come through florida for a handful of years now and they've never disappointed we've tried the chken sandwiches (on a day where they had actually sold out of EVERYTHING else-bc that popular) and they were incredibly amazing, and extra messy in a good way. Also have tried most of their BBQ/load-a-plate type options​ and they've all been so good! The fried cabbage was out of this fucking world id eat a whole bowl of that and be happy. Mac and cheese and baked beans were stellar. Fried chicken was a little dry on the mouth but well seasoned and delicious. Mashed potatoes were fantastic. Jambalaya im going to mostly gloss over because every recipe is wildly different but overall was good. Slap some hot sauce on it if you like spicy like me and youll be golden. Price is a bit hefty upfront but fair for speciality and delicious all you can eat. (At this pop up). I come from pretty rural Georgia, and have a fondness for cajun food and ill be real. The food isn't Ista worthy picturesque. But it tastes and looks like it came straight out of a family owned southern cafeteria. 5/5 stars hands down. Y'all yesterday I was hornswoggled and flimflammed. Went to the SouthernFriedVegan pop up in Columbus, Ohio, and left with a mouth full of sadness. Firstly the times posted were 4-7pm. They made a post around 1 to say that the time was actually 1-4. So I adjusted my schedule just to make it there. the options were to pick 3 sides and a "protein" main for $30. The price was already a little sus, but I forged ahead. I chose the collard greens, mac n cheese, jambalaya, and fried chicken. When I tell you that everything that came out was terrible. I mean everything. The Greens...my god the GREENS. As soon as I put them in my mouth I said these are burnt. I had my mom taste it and she agreed they were definitely burnt and not cooked well. The only flavor was burnt. My mom took it back to them, and showed them the burnt parts. The guy tried to tell her some people cook them by boiling them for hours, I prefer to char them. IKYFL. Y'all I have had charred red peps, charred tomatoes, charred jalapenos, and so on. This was not that. This was burnt. They gave her a side of cabbage to replace it. The cabbage was waaaaay to salty. UN-edible. The "roll" I got on the side, tasted like a hamburger bun. The "jambalaya"...was just rice. Dry, unseasoned, no added veggies or protein substitute, or sauce....rice. The mac n' cheese was somehow both a little creamy and dry at the same time. The noodles were... al dente. The fried chicken, was I believe Tofu, but just a mushy dry mess. The breading if you can call it that, was I think some sort of seasoning. but didn't add any flavor. The only seasoning of the whole meal was made from the salt in my tears. Reminder this was $30. It was nowhere near Southern at best. At worst it was just very badly cooked and straight up flavorless. I've had plenty of Vegan foods full of flavor. That was not the issue. This was just bad food. One of the worst meals I've ever eaten. I didn't even finish half of it and that was pushing through, because of the money I spent. I went to see the comments from other folks on their FB. Nothing. Pop-up tent in Phoenixville, PA the day after the Phoenixville Vegfest that they didn't partake in. I'll get into the food, but to start off... The 'cook' grabbed the chicken with his (gloved) hand to throw it into the fryer. He did the same with the tots that the person before us ordered. Same glove took and exchanged cash. Frozen chick'n on a seeded hamburger roll with a handful (same gloves) of cabbage and drippy spoons of 2 different sauces. We think one was cheese but liquid like thick water, if that makes sense. We chose a side of cajun corn that was canned and salty as hell. All tins holding the food pre-cook were uncovered, in a dusty farmer's market parking lot, in 85 degree weather. All this fabulousness can be had for $20. Also, the jalopy of his van was wide open it the sun, with bulk cans of beans sitting in the doorway. Maybe this is a more economical way to cook them? SFVegan was in New Orleans Mid January 2025, I saw a post on our local vegan community facebook group and decided to drag my family of 5 out in the cold to experience this seemingly delicious vegan bbq pop up at our local Second Line Brewery... we arrived at 6:30pm it was dark my husband and 3 children: our 7 year old, toddler and infant stood in front of a rinky tent setup... I should have paid attention to the flags and gathered my family and left; but I decided to ignore it and proceeded to order. I got the plate dinner for $30 - 3 sides and a choice of fried or bbq chicken.... A shrimp poboy, $20 with a side and the totachos, $10 When I received my order, I would wth I paid $60 for!!!! It was a definite ripoff at first glance but when I sat down to eat it omg... no taste whatsoever. The jambalaya was just rice with some colored stuff no flavor or mock meat, the collard greens were also pretty bland and the baked beans taste like regular ass pinto beans... the bbq chicken was garderin flavorless chicken no bbq sauce or seasoning. The poboy bread was super large, cool bread, light dressing and 3 shrimps lol wth. The tot nachos super soggy. The customer service was extremely lacking and the guy was as dry as the food they served. Please run away their pop up is pretty trouble and trashy too. It was very messy and unkempt. Review of Southern Fried Vegan - Extremely Disappointed and Concerned I usually try to support vegan food vendors, but my experience with Southern Fried Vegan was absolutely unacceptable. Not only was the food subpar, but the operation behind the scenes was downright unsanitary and unprofessional. Let's start with cleanliness: The owner never cleaned the pots or kitchenware before starting to cook -- and I watched closely. Even worse, during the event, I noticed he didn't wash his hands a single time while handling food. That alone should raise serious red flags for anyone concerned about hygiene. A customer was clearly unsatisfied with her order and told the manager that the food was inedible. Instead of addressing her concerns and offering a simple refund (which would've been the right thing to do), the manager chose to walk away from the situation. He went to get event security and staff to remove the customer from the festival entirely, rather than resolving the issue. His refusal to refund the $25 -- all because she was telling other festival-goers not to eat from his tent -- shows just how selfish and unprofessional this business is. This company seriously needs to be investigated. If someone gets sick from their food (which seems very likely based on what I saw), it could result in a major lawsuit. And honestly, it should. Please spread the word. If you see Southern Fried Vegan at a festival or market in your city or state, walk around the back of the tent before you decide to eat. According to their social media sites, Southern Fried Vegan is the first vegan pop-up vendor in Southern California and the #1 vegan BBQ joint in the U.S. per VegNews. A quick look at past and upcoming events shows they're in high demand. Indeed, looking at past and future events indicates stops from S. California to Florida to NYC. At Crooked Tooth Brewing in Tucson, waits in the line to place an order ranged from 20 minutes to over an hour! We decided to go between lunch and dinner, so our wait was on the shorter end of that range. The highlighted menu item was the Country Dinner with 4 sides, 1 "meat", and a slice of bread for $24. My partner and I each ordered one dinner plus a $10 tot appetizer to share. I selected mac & cheez, Cajun corn, yams, bbq beans, and fried chiquen for my meal. My partner swapped the beans for jambalaya, but otherwise got the same thing. Serving sizes are large, so share if you aren't super hungry or don't want leftovers. The good: It's all plant-based! The yams were sweet, soft, and yummy. The coating on the fried chiquen was crisp and flavorful, and the "meat" reminiscent of a chicken breast. The so-so: We enjoyed the totchos, though the authentic nacho cheese sauce was on the salty side. The beans and jambalaya were just ok. The Mac & Cheez was pretty bland, and the noodles stuck together to make a noodle ball. The bread was just a slice of Italian bread. The not-so-good: Neither of us could finish the Cajun corn; it simply was too salty to eat. I suspect it was accidentally seasoned twice. Tucson has a number of excellent vegan restaurant and catering options at this and lower price points. If you have a hankering for vegan soul food, give Southern Fried Vegan a try. Can I just say, I was NOT impressed with the Southern Fried Vegan Brews and BBQ event (which it won't let me tag now for some reason) at LauderAle yesterday. I've seen a couple other people's posts raving about the food today and I totally disagree. I'm not one to leave negative reviews but damn, I have to say something here. First of all, it was a hot day in hell today and the line was atrocious. I get it that they wanted us to be patient when ordering but damn, I'm not sure why exactly the wait was so long. We were literally in line for over an hour... all the food is premade and is slopped into a to-go container a few mins after you order. So someone please help me understand what on earth took an hour?! Second of all, by the time we got through the hour long wait (in the sweltering heat of South Florida), they were out of almost all of the sides. No Baked Beans. No Collard Greens. No SFV Yams. Literally all the ones I wanted to try. So, I asked the girl if she could do the Cajun Shrimp & the Fried Chicken in their 'Country Dinner' plate which is a whopping $20. For that, you get to choose 4 of the 7 sides and 1 of the 2 proteins. Third of all, while I will admit that it was a lot of food, we ended up with a ton of overly sauced corn, a very small portion of their fried chicken, a ton of whatever sauce or aioli they use (that I asked for on the side and it came in the container anyways), some of the rice which was very dry, and quite a bit of chopped red cabbage - which I would not consider a slaw. I didn't want any Mac & Cheeze but still somehow ended up getting some in my slop. As for the 'Cajun Shrimp' - see photo of the burnt-to-a-crisp thing we got in our container. Lastly, their customer service was very lacking. The girl who checked us out wasn't rude but there was another girl who she said was her sister in the back with a nasty attitude. My husband ordered the Beer-Cheeze Battered Beyond Burger (which he did really enjoy). The burger was $20 and comes with one side. When I asked if they could put the Mac & Cheeze he wanted on the side (bc we like to split dishes) she didn't want to do it. They ended up reluctantly doing it anyways but stressed that they don't do that. Um, ok... Overal, I can tell you that this was not an enjoyable experience and I would not recommend, nor will I be attending another one of their events. Oh and I forgot to mention the lack of cleanliness. While we were expected to wear masks and 'social distance' while waiting over an hour in line, outside, in the heat... when we got closer to their raggedy tent, I watched several of the servers who were handling food with their masks down. Operating without food handler permits in Austin. They hired people off Facebook when some staff didn't show. In top of that, the beans they use come from a can. Why am I paying $30 for Morningstar chicken, canned beans, and canned cabbage (all oversalted), in an unclean pop up? Vaping while serving? No thank you. This was a huge letdown, and I hope Veg News reconsiders who they endorse. read more
