The staff was super friendly & brought us samples of their specialties while we were perusing an extensive menu. First out was the cream of crab soup. Huge chunks of crab & seasoned superbly, better than anything we ever ate at the shore! Our group had fried chicken which had a perfectly light crust, luscious chicken & dumplings, moist blackened catfish & legit the BEST crab cakes ever. We finished this all up w/a slab of chocolate cake with 4 forks so we could all share. We've been vacationing in Bethany Beach for over 30 years. Crab soup is 5/5! Mac and cheese is 5/5! Turkey club sandwich was super also! Great lunch! Great service. Was a stop on our way home from vacation and was well worth the price! Driving back from a beach week too early to stop at the deli in Rehoboth, I just kept driving despite how hungry I was, eventually we passed through Ellendale and saw the sign for Southern Grill and decided to stop in, assured by the amount of cars packing the parking lot. I've been to a lot of diners and have rarely ever had less than a good experience but this place blew me away, we were expecting good food of course but this place was far and away one of the best breakfasts I've ever had in my life. The biscuits and gravy were hands down the best I've ever tasted, the french toast looked to be made with actual french bread and it was thick and fluffy, the home fries were soft but with a little crisp, the sausage links were savory with some sweet spice [chicken apple?] and even the bacon and eggs were done to perfection. Every serving was heaping and generous and the prices were unbelievable. For the experience you wouldn't be blamed if you expected something twice as expensive. I live in Georgia but come up this ways every so often for family vacations and frankly I'm looking for an excuse to come back even sooner, especially since I can't wait to try their lunch and dinner menu. Was just refused service from Southern grill in Ellendale DE. for absolutely no reason, I have been to this place many times to grab boardwalk fries on my back to northern DE. BUT today I was told they wouldn't serve me per management. Funny thing is I have never met management or ever had any interaction with them. For a business that has been struggling before and during the pandemic to refuse service is flat out ridiculous and stupid. IF anyone is considering visiting this establishment. Think twice. MANAGEMENT still hasn't tackled there fly infestation even on the temp food truck location and I didnt see any PPE on any employees. Take your business elsewhere to be on thr safe side. read more

My 1st visit I fought with a million flies. Breakfast eaten there was okay. The waffle I took home was over cooked. My second visit I fought with a million flies. I asked for grits and eggs. Today was my first time back since Restaurant Impossible did the makeover and the dining room looks fabulous, it now has a farmhouse feel with distressed flooring, bright white walls and farmhouse metal chairs, very nice. I just stopped in to pick up some stewed tomatoes & lima bean with dumpling soup to go so I didn't have a chance to look at the menu to see if there are any new additions but trust and believe that hubby and I will be coming back for dinner in a few weeks. Food was good. Simple menu. Wait time was crazy. Not to be seated but for the waitress to address us. It was 10 minutes before we were brought menus. Then once we ordered the food was quick but it was 30 minutes before we got our check. Then we sat with the check for almost 20 minutes before she grabbed it to close us out. There isn't a lot of competition in the area so if you've never eaten outside Sussex County this place might be satisfying. But if you've ever been elsewhere, you'll have had better food and this place will only be kinda mediocre. This isn't a dig at homestyle/comfort food. It's 100% possible for homestyle/comfort food to be amazing! This place just doesn't get there. I think it's largely because the menu is too broad and unfocused. It's not possible for 1. all the ingredients to be fresh or 2. the cooks to be good at 70 different things. Narrow it down and really *nail* a few signature dishes (from fresh ingredients) and they might be on to something. Our server, Carrie, was also very distracted and ignored us for long stretches of time. She didn't bring us the extra bread we asked for because there's an upcharge... apparently deciding for us that we didn't want it instead of informing and asking us. There was something else she didn't bring us as they were out of it.... and again, didn't inform us until she brought the main course. I'll try to give her the benefit of the doubt that this was just an off night. The revamped interior is visually quite nice! Props for that. But it's 2019 and there's no way to put your name on a waiting list... you just hope everyone is honest enough to respect the order of arrival. The owner runs over every so often to mentally make a note of the order, but I'm sure he could free up some of his time with a better system. read more

OMG! The fried chicken! It's the best ever! OMG! OMG! OMG! OK. I'm almost 50 years old, and this fried chicken has me ranting like a teen girl at a Sting concert... er... um... I mean ... um... uh..., a Justin Bieber concert - or whatever! The aspiring curmudgeon within me has little patience for being pestered with millennial-appropriate pop culture references. Let's just say that (after my first bite) my eyes reflected all of the mystery and awe of a young boy who just watched the Lego movie for the first time. That facade quickly transformed into an icy glare directed at my fiendish (and horribly selfish) wife who just reached out to try to get a taste off the piece of chicken in my hand. It's made to order so expect a bit (20-30 minute) of a wait - don't worry, it's excellent. I would suggest, however, that you ask if the table can get their salads, soups, or other sides while you wait. We neglected to ask and were a bit neglected ourselves until the main courses came out together with the side dishes (my side dish was a salad). The menu is vast... as is the list of specials. This incredible array of options actually has me quite concerned - soft shell crabs, trout, rockfish, scallops, flounder, tuna, shrimp are all seafood specials today? Just how much seafood does the Southern Grill go through on a given night? Concerns aside, the dishes we had (fried chicken, turkey pot pie, salad, collard greens) were all quite good. The pot pie captured the essence of Thanksgiving in July (... hmmm that's an odd feeling, but it tasted good), but it was quite heavy & buried with gravy. The fried chicken, however, was clearly the star! I want to come back and try breakfast... or dinner & one of their desserts - the cakes and pies look amazing and appropriately devastating to any diet. On a down note, I wish they put a bit more effort into culling the fly population... The flies were numerous and seriously detracted from our ability to relax and enjoy the otherwise quaint environment. If there was only a bit more service and a more pleasant atmosphere (i.e., eliminate all the flies)... this place would quite easily get 4*. Solid down-home Eastern Shore grub. Basically the same food we've been eating for over 20 years on the way to the shore, first at the Southern Diner and then at Jimmy's Grill. Crab cakes were very good. Loved the sweet potato souffle. I thought the limas and dumplings could have used some salt or something, but everyone else liked them. Mac and cheese also very good. Safe choice on the way to the shore, but not up to the level of Po Boys in nearby Milton, which we skipped on this trip. read more

Long ago i would've gave them a 5 star review, but sadly i can't. This was the go to spot for me and my family for many years, before the Restaurant Impossible help. I would be praising it for having some of the best comfort food in Delaware. Recently we were in the mood for their famous Chicken and Dumplings and i was looking forward to it. How Disappointing. I don't know if they have a new cook or new recipe, but everything was odd. The dumplings barely had much gravy, the chicken didn't taste as juicy or flavorful, and the candied Yams i had as a side were hard with no flavor. Oddly enough, the rolls were still on point. As for the interior of the place, i like some of the changes except one major flaw; the chairs. The new chairs are the most uncomfortable I've ever sat on. Me and my mom sat in to eat breakfast 1 morning coming home from Vacation and i could barely enjoy my food due to how badly my back and butt was hurting. Bad, bad decision putting those types of chairs in there and eliminating all the booths. Who knows, we may have caught them on a bad day, but in the meantime I'm hesitant to get food there after my recent Chicken and Dumplings experience. Its just ashame because its surprisingly hard finding good comfort food places. read more

Since getting their face-lift from Robert Irvine and company, this place has really stepped up their menu (or should I say, pared it down?). We have only been doing take-away because of the pandemic, but the food quality has been excellent. They have local favorites in addition to traditional fare. My favorite is the fried catfish with sweet potatoes and in-season greens, which THEY GROW THEMSELVES! If you're in the area, it would be a great disservice to your belly not to stop in. read more

Saw this restaurant on Restaurant Impossible and decided to check it out. So glad we took the drive. Hands down, the best food I've had in a long time. The rolls (both dinner and steak) are made on-site as are the deserts. The steak meat is so juicy and has such good flavor. He gets it from Washington DC. It is a black angus prime rib! The chicken and dumplings melt in your mouth. I had the chicken and dumplings, my husband had the cheesesteak. The service was great. The owner is really nice, so glad I had the opportunity to meet him. Take the ride, you will not be disappointed!! read more

Stopped by this morning on the way back from the beach to get some breakfast. Initially it was our second choice. From the outside, we expected a greasy spoon, maybe a couple fried eggs and some greasy bacon and we'd be on our way. A woman in the parking lot said to order the French toast, and had a huge grin on her face. We enter the restaurant and are stunned at how nice it was on the inside. We order sausage, bacon, pancakes and French toast. The presentation was wonderful, the portions generous, and the meal fantastic. Imagine instead of the greasy spoon French toast you might expect, a baguette cut on the bias, made into French toast, with just the right amount of cinnamon. The other dishes were similarly impressive. We're stopping by again on our next beach trip! Keep up the great work! read more

The gem of Ellendale! Don't let the humble outer appearance fool you...this place may look small, but the menu is extensive, the service is top notch, and the food is excellent. Special shout out for that amazing sweet tea! We all ordered the cream of crab soup which was loaded with chunks of crab and perfect as a dip for the freshly baked sweet rolls which were offered to all the tables. The 2 soft shell crab entree special was perfectly cooked and FRESHHH. All the portions were huge and we left stuffed, having thoroughly enjoyed the down-home southern country cooking offered at the Southern Grille. Looking for a great southern home cooked meal and dessert while in the area? The food here is heavenly! I had the fried chicken which is seasoned to perfection! For sides, fried green tomatoes, collards and candied yams. It doesn't get any better. I had to try this, their potato salad. It is slightly sweet with bits of bacon in it. You can't stop eating. I almost forgot the hot yeast rolls that is brought out at dinner. Beware, you can't stop with just one! If you have room - top the meal off with the pretzel salad for desert, strawberry jello, cream cheese, whipped cream and pieces of toasted pretzel - you've got to try it to believe it. This restaurant is a great spot for people on the move! Not because of the speed of their service, but because it's the only restaurant in the area. The menu was fairly broad which was good for a family with different tastes. The lady that waited on us tarnished the experience, though. It took her quite some time to reach our table, while there was one other table that had not yet been served. We never got the (delicious looking) bread that every other table received. She took our order accurately. This establishment also seems to hold a keen interest in saving sea turtles, seeing as we never got our straws. We found this on our GPS on our annual pilgrimage to Duck on the OBX...we usually stop near Salisbury, so we started looking for dinner around 7:30 that evening, and seeing the good reviews and the fact it was less than a half mile off our route, decided to stop by. First, we were a little concerned we were under dressed, but, you can't be at this place - very cozy, casual, local feel to the place. My first impression when I looked at the menu and noticed the prices was, did we go through a time warp and end up in 1984? Granted, it's Ellendale, not NYC or even Baltimore, but I was pleasantly surprised. One review the wife read was about the cream of crab soup, and being from Baltimore but exiled to upstate NY, my wife was really hankering to try that. (A later-in-life severe crab allergy prevents me from partaking, ugh, and being from Bawlmer too, I miss crab...) From what I could see and what she reports, the cream of crab was excellent, thick, chunky and loaded with backfin crab meat...she was not as impressed with her crab cake, tasty, but with a little more filler than she expected... My son and I had the butterflied fried shrimp - fantastic, big, meaty, the crust was light, not overwhelming, very tasty. The side salad and cole slaw were absolutely fresh - the greens in the salad looked and tasted as they had just been picked. I know it's a small thing, but it's the little things in life that count. My son's friend had a daily special - seafood Alfredo. He raved about it, and from the looks, they don't cheat one on the seafood as it was chocked full of the good stuff. The only downside were the flies - only a couple, and I know Ellendale is in farmland, but still a little annoying. The waitress was great, very friendly, attentive, the rest of the staff we interacted with was very accommodating...judging from the carry out business we saw, it's popular with the locals which is always a good sign. We didn't save room for desert, which we will do the next time - the pineapple upside down cake looked very tasty... Definitely recommend if you find yourself hungry on the way to the beach. It's always good to find a scratch-cooking, homemade place that takes pride in their food. read more

Well, I finally added a restaurant to my favorites list. Usually I try to experience as many restaurants as I can and rarely go to the same place twice. There were so many options I had a hard time choosing something. With my family, it is hard to agree on a restaurant when we are traveling. This place has something for everybody. Everything tastes home made. The dinner rolls were hot and fresh. Collared greens were awesome (had strings of ham in them). Mac and cheese is homemade and tasty. The cream of crab soup was super good (says so on the menu). The reason we are coming back is the breakfast menu looked great and we love breakfast.
