A downgrade from 4 to 3 stars after a few years. The bakery case is often mostly empty, but when it is filled, it's with a very basic assortment of cookies and croissants. Gone are the delicious hand pies and other more special items from a few years ago. The food has gotten progressively more expensive, and sadly just isn't very good anymore. The last straw was ordering their Korean steak bowl for lunch, being asked how I wanted it cooked (I said medium rare), and getting my order to see the meat had been hammered to the point of shoe leather, accompanied by what appeared to be a small harvest of radishes, sliced up with no seasoning whatsoever. The coffee in my view has actually gotten better however, and if you stick to a bagel sandwich, you can eat just fine. But it feels like it's been declining slowly. read more

Stopped in for a coffee on a Saturday morning. The space is really beautiful and spacious. Room for a LOT of people! Service was friendly and helpful. We tried both the gingerbread cold brew and hot latte (seasonal). Both were really tasty and the coffee used is good. They have a lot of lovely looking pastries and other foods but our mission today was just coffee. Would definitely return and recommend. The most stunning Southern Grounds location in Jax! I love taking visitors here to show them some of Jax's best. The Avondale neighborhood boasts beautiful historical homes, delicious restaurants, and Spanish moss overhanging the walkable neighborhood. The Southern Grounds Avondale location is perfect for groups or solo dates. I've been here multiple times for a study session and had a few of their bowls, drinks, and pastries. After you've worked hard, you can play hard with a glass of wine or mimosa. They also have rotating specials that keep things exciting. The staff are kind and I never wait too long for my food. I love how there's plenty of seating and outlets throughout Southern Grounds. Sometimes it can get loud which I think is emphasized with the tall ceilings but nothing some headphones can't fix. Parking can also be sparse since the area is so popular. I keep it pretty simple when I order here, which usually entails a vanilla latte or a cold brew. The past few times I've visited I've been a little underwhelmed as the coffees are a bit watery for my liking. I'd enjoy a stronger brew where possible. I was also a little shocked that alt milk costs me $1.25 so today a medium iced latte costs me nearly $8, I personally feel like that's the most I've ever paid for an alt milk option. The food is great, I typically go for the oatmeal or avocado toast but my husband said their breakfast burrito is notable as well. They have a nice selection of baked goods, I enjoy their muffins and the lavender cookie is to die for. Overall, it's a great staple cafe in the area that has ample space for co-working, friend and family gatherings or just a quick bite. But the young lady who greeted us today, the blonde young lady, seemed like she wanted to be somewhere else and actually made us feel like she was annoyed that we were there! Not a good start. The breakfast burrito I had was not very good at all. The sauce was acidic with no flavor and the sausage was flavorless. The texture of the burrito reminded of the old frozen microwaved burritos you might have had in college. Good coffee, good location, not a great welcome and very average food. The young lady who brought us our food was super sweet and polite. Maybe she would be more qualified to greet customers at the register? All were delicious but nothing extraordinary. While I appreciate that sogro is locally owned I have always felt that their menu is overpriced. The first time I came here, I had to make sure I was in the right place, because no joke....I thought I walked into a posh, grandiose hotel lobby. I don't even bother waiting for this to come to room temp (it's served chilled), I just dive right in, last meal on earth style. The Chocolate Twist: Braided pastry with mini chocolate chips. Flaky on the outside, soft and creamy on the inside. Perfect with a cold glass of milk or a toasty hot chocolate. I got 2 on my last visit and ate them both as if they were calorie-free. Aside from the appetizing pastries, of course, there's a hearty assortment of coffee drinks, wines, gourmet sandwiches, healthier-fare options, Tartines, and even Steak Frittes. Grabbed a few sweet treats for my PTA mom friends. It was my first time there from hearing my mom saying the omelette was delicious but I didn't have time to grab one that time. The girl was new but she was helpful and sweet. Matcha Latte 4/10 Didn't taste any matcha at all and kinda watery Mexican Hot Chocolate Tart 5/10 Has a spicy kick after 2 bites. Love the tart crust and whip topping and mini chocolate chips Brown Bourbon Peach Cake 8/10 Loved everything about it. The cake was moist. me and my best friend used to come here all the time last summer, it was the best place ever. good size foods, great smoothies, kind service, etc. but we came back a year later, the food was shrunken and more expensive, the yogurt wasn't even cold and tasted like sour cream. we tried to mix it to atleast make it taste better, it didn't work at all. the honey was watery, they gave us barely ANY fruit at all on top of it, and the guy up front had an ugly attitude. we are very disappointed and will not be coming back ever again. maybe only for the smoothies, but that's it. i dont recommend this place to anyone, atleast not anymore. read more

Been here at the Southern Grounds, Avondale for few times now and so far the experience I had was spectacular. We always try to go here early morning, before 9:00am because anything after that especially on the weekend will be a little chaos since they can get pretty busy and since they are located in Avondale parking is always a hassle. Ambiance here is very nice, very spacious and bright. They did an amazing job for doing that since when you are here all you want to do is stay there and drink/ eat and just relax. Food has always been great here, I ordered the Greek omellete and added sausage and a side of pancake and all of them are good! They also have a wide variety of menu from breakfast, lunch and dinner and they also offer desserts and alcohol! But like what I said earlier, this place can get very busy and it is a first come first serve on the tables. Southern Grounds always give the best quality and great service and this is definitely a great addition to the Avondale area. read more

This Southern Grounds is in Avondale, a cute lil area and neighborhood. I knew there was a location in San Marco but decided on Avondale after looking through some photos because I'm a sucker for big, bright open spaces to get some work done. The menu is a bit overwhelming but I tried to order fast since I was the only one at the counter. I got my classic iced matcha latte (sweetened) and a the Baja Ancient Grain Salmon healthy bowl with no pico. After ordering, they give you a number for your food and you can grab a seat. I sat at the community table in the back because I wanted to be near an outlet but there were so many options to where you can sit to work, catch up with some friends or meet with a coworker. They have free wifi and thanks to Bobby B for having a photo on Yelp with the wifi password so I didn't have to get up again to ask. The internet was reliable and fast. For the food and drink, the salmon bowl was delicious and so filling. It was pretty pricey but at least it tasted good. The iced matcha was pretty good, as well. My favorite part of this spot was definitely how I could picture myself working from here for an extended amount of time. I think everyone else around me was also on the same page as they were all working away on laptops or studying. If I'm ever back, I'd love to explore the area it was in after, with shops all around like Le Macaron. read more

This is a Great coffee shop, which is what I was looking for. But it is far more than that. The extensive full menu is available all day and night, and is excellent! Had a chocolate croissant and later the grilled chix sandwich, both great. Service was outstanding! Meredith was particularly helpful when I had trouble getting on their wifi. The wifi was the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars. It worked for about 20 minutes of the 90 or so minutes I was there. I then told them I had to go to Starbucks where the wifi always works but that I would come back; which I did since this place was open until 9, SB closes at 8. Tried so he wifi again, no dice. A router or service upgrade may help but I will definitely be back. read more

Coffee, treats, lunch and good company. My friends and I met up for lunch to catch up. We joked about needing to do it more often, we tend to see each other once a year. Local- but busy. Kristen picked the place, she works on base and needed something easy to get to. Parking is a bear in this area. Get that out first. Too many wonderful eateries along this strip! My coffee was perfection in a cup. My blueberry muffin- big, but slightly dry. Kristen's salad was delicious and Julie got toast with lox- she was very happy with her food too. The coffee has a sour taste to it, unfortunately it didn't do it for me. The place was so cute and spacious inside. We come here every morning for breakfast when we are in town. Firstly, the coffee flavors are amazing. They have standard year-round options (standard and unique like lavender) and they have seasonal options (like honey B lavender). The lattes can be made with a variety of dairy free milk substitutes if that is your thing, but sometimes they run out of specific options. The drip coffee is also great and comes with free refills. For food, the pastries are fresh baked and delicious. But the hot food menu is also amazing. Good veggie options as well as meat containing items. Avocado toast - good portions and ripe avocado. Feta cheese and olive oil finish it well. Bagels - ask for the level of toast you want... standard is very lightly toasted. Omelets are well prepared in general, but not phenomenal. The eggs Benedict on the menu currently has bacon on top instead of ham underneath and avocado underneath.. very unique and flavorful! Grits are very tasty on the side. First impressions are everything, right? We'll, the young cashier who greeted us was friendly, welcoming and so sweet!
