Having gone to UNF for four years, I was happy to see one of the better coffee shops make a leap from the native Jacksonville, FL to St. Petersburg. Known for cozy interiors, personable staff and quality coffee you couldn't match at the chain location a block away do slightly cheaper. Oh how times have changed. Southern Grounds St Petersburg is not like their Jacksonville counterparts in the slightest with the exception being the space is used well and looks great. However, the staff I thought was rude, not personable, coffee that tastes oddly bitter and the price for what's offered doesn't seem reasonable (staff can't control this). This isn't Jacksonville where coffee shops aren't as plentiful as downtown St. Pete, but hurts even more so when you begin to compare. I've been three times with friends who wanted to "try it out." I don't think I'm a coffee snob, nor are they, but we left every time saying "that wasn't the best." Not every coffee shop can be "amazing 5/5," but when a coffee just doesn't taste good/ okay for the price - I can't recommend it any further. 2 out 5; Can't control price and space is well laid out. read more

I really enjoy the atmosphere here for getting work done. The music is on the louder side, but that doesn't bother me because my noise-canceling headphones take care of it during meetings. It's become one of my go-to places to work for a few hours. I've only tried the bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich. Overall, it was good, but the bacon was disappointing. If I'm paying around $10 for a breakfast sandwich, I expect thick-cut, quality bacon. Instead, it was thin, flimsy, and honestly reminded me of the kind of bacon you'd get at a free Hampton Inn breakfast buffet. I've seen other people's meals, though, and they all looked pretty good, so I'm open to trying more of the menu. The coffee isn't my favorite. I mainly buy it because I spend time working here and wouldn't feel right using the space without purchasing something. There are definitely better coffee shops in St. Pete if you're judging on coffee alone. The biggest area that needs improvement is cleanliness. The bathrooms are consistently dirty and have an unpleasant smell. On one visit, they were out of toilet paper for quite a while before anyone restocked it, despite there being plenty of staff working. The restrooms could really use a deep cleaning--the toilets look stained, the floors and walls have visible grime, and the trash areas need to be wiped down more regularly. I've also noticed quite a few flies, especially around the trash areas. Keeping those spaces cleaner would likely help with that and make the overall experience much more pleasant. Overall, I enjoy coming here because it's a comfortable place to work, but better cleanliness, improved restroom maintenance, and a higher-quality coffee and breakfast sandwich would make a big difference. read more

In a sea of St Pete coffee shops, this one is just.. okay. Nothing particularly unique or special about it. The coffee is fine, they do not particularly feature the sourcing of the beans so I can't really speak to that. My latte was, not memorable. My avocado toast was burnt and soggy at the same time. The tumeric latte was flavorless. The menu was a bit all over the place. The ambiance was very flat. This is the kind of coffee shop they would call trendy in a small town. However in downtown St. Pete it just appears unremarkable. There is no specialty, niche, or unique features. They don't even really have a list of recommendations or a dedicated specialty coffee menu, just a paper list of syrups and a chalkboard of employees favorite drinks. read more

Amazing coffee! I got the turmeric latte- note there is no caffeine in it- but added a shot with two pumps of hazelnut and good God! It's soooo good. Beautiful shop. Lots of seating and the food looks good even though i haven't tried it yet. read more

Service was kind and patient! I'm always nervous taking too long when I try a new cafe but they were helpful with my order. It's off Central so it's a busy spot for sure. I wouldn't go if you struggle to focus in high traffic areas. I had a spot at the counter with an outlet which was great. Garage style doors were open so it's a little muggy but that would be nice in the winter. Breakfast grits bowl could use some salt mixed in with the grits. It was pretty bland even with the cheese and bacon. Maybe some gravy would help. read more

I visited the new Southern Grounds on Central in St Pete on their second day! It's a spacious stylish spot which is much more than a coffee shop. They have a full breakfast, lunch and dinner menu as well as prosecco on tap! Here are some notable points that stood out to me... The space is comfortable, spacious and open but not too loud. The left wall as you enter is adorned with amazing colorful works by local artist, Matt Kress. The menu is healthy, creative and varied! For example, local grass fed beef is used. No seed oils are used. Instead, just olive oil and tallow! They feature numerous in house made syrup flavors for your favorite flavored latte! It's the most I've ever seen! The staff are engaging and ready to serve and answer questions. I met Jordan, one of the owners, Mattea who provided great service and Renee who cranked out some beautiful latte art! Thank you all three of you! This great concept started in Jacksonville and now has opened this new location in St Pete! My espresso, with coffee beans from Intelligentsia, was smooth and had a nice crema. Well done and just what I wanted. Southern Grounds is a vibe! I went to the soft opening, and also went shortly after for brunch. The food is fantastic- everything on the menu is so fresh. I had the brunch burger w/ fries and didn't leave feeling bloated at all- which is a testament to how fresh it is! Located in DTSP, Southern Grounds is steps away from entertainment, bars and art. Speaking of art, Matt Kress has beautiful art that accentuates the space. The owners did a good, intentional job with Southern Grounds, I see this being a successful spot in St. Pete. YUM! read more

I've loved becoming a SoGro regular! It's definitely a hotspot for coworking throughout the week- it gets so busy that I wonder where all these people were going before?! The coffee and food are solid, and I like that they have housemade syrups. It's really always buzzing in here! I also love that they're an all day cafe so it's a great spot for a glass of wine or a beer, too. I honestly like coming here because they make a really good Earl Grey iced tea and their chickpea salad is yummy. But...it's turned into a total co-work space. Today I came in with a friend and all the tables were taken with people on their computers. Not an empty place to be found. We left. It's especially frustrating when there is one person sitting at a four top. It's also gotten quite noisy-need to either turn the music down or get some acoustic support on the ceiling. Could something be done to cut down on the amount of people working in there? I like to try new coffee shops within 20 miles of me, lol. Early reviews were excellent for here, so we gave it a try this morning. It's always rare for a coffee shop to be in the 5-star range. But this one belongs there. It's new, clean, & sharp, with lots of room inside & out. The workers were welcoming & the flavors for lattes exceeded what many places offer. I normally shy away from fruit flavored lattes, as the pairing with coffee doesn't always mix well...or so I thought. The worker said their blackberry flavoring was housemade & very good. From the moment you walk in, the vibes are immaculate bright, stylish, energetic without being chaotic. It's the kind of spot where you can post up to work for hours, meet a friend, or just enjoy being somewhere that feels thoughtfully done. The food? Outstanding. The cheese grits are genuinely write-home-worthy--rich, comforting, perfectly seasoned, and dangerously easy to obsess over. Everything coming out of the kitchen feels intentional and elevated. Pair that with truly excellent service--friendly, attentive, and on point without being overbearing--and you've got a near-perfect coffee shop experience. Now for the asterisk. The cold coffee cup lids. Good lord, the cold coffee cup lids. They are, without exaggeration, the absolute worst lids known to modern civilization. These things are engineered to betray you. Guaranteed drips, spills, and outfit destruction. One wrong sip and suddenly your shirt is baptized in cold brew and the joy from the otherwise outstanding service evaporates instantly. Southern Grounds: please investigate your supply chain. Whoever approved these lids should be sent to the Gulag with haste. That said, I'll still be back. Often. A little late posting this review, but I went to the soft opening for Southern Grounds and loved it! The vibe was amazing. There was a DJ, great food, delicious coffee, and excellent drinks. This is exactly what St. Pete needed, a coffee shop with good food that stays open later! Where are people supposed to work past 3 or 5 o'clock otherwise? So glad to have them in town! The location is perfect and I know they are going to thrive. I hope they keep bringing in live music in the evenings and on weekends. It really adds to the experience! read more

Service was 10/10! Very sweet employee who answered all of my questions. I went in to get coffee grounds for my cold brew, and it didn't disappoint! Flavor was 8/10, but price was $18~ with tax. Hence the 4/5 stars. I typically buy my grounds at chain grocers, so maybe $18 is a standard price for a small business. The vibe inside was awesome and very, very clean. They have a bar seating area, low-top tables, and half-booths. They also had very nice array of pastry selections. I will be back soon to try some new grounds (just for something different), and I hope to try some of their lunch options next time I'm there. Their menu was exciting! read more

The best carrot cake I ever had!! Carrot cake is one of my favorites and I tried many over the years and theirs tops them all. It has the perfect amount of frosting to cake ratio with just the right amount of nuts. And thank you for not putting in raisins or pineapple chunks. What a disappointment this Southern Ground. The breakfast was terrible and had not flavor at all. My daughters ordered scrambled eggs with toasts and I ordered a ham omelette. The eggs have a weird smell with not flavor and they were made with cheap egg batter. My omelette was dry and not well cooked. The pancake feels old. When I asked the manager for a refund, he refused to comply and did not want to provide me his name. We left and visited BANDIT WHEN WE HAD A WONDERFUL BREAKFAST! read more

We walked here from our Air B&B on a Thursday morning. Not busy. Got a latte and macchiato. Also ordered a banana chocolate muffin. The muffin was stale and I couldn't even eat the top or sides because it was so crunchy and stale. The inside was okay. Because the muffin was so bad, I ordered a breakfast sandwich and my husband did as well. I got an egg, sausage and cheese on a bagel. It was meh and expensive for what it was. My husband got the California bagel sandwich- egg, aioli and salmon. It was terrible. Did not taste good at all. I got a sandwich to go for my son since he just woke up. The one worker in the back was on the phone for several minutes and then started microwaving the egg and toasting the bagel. She stayed on the phone and kept stepping away while I waited. There was no one else waiting or ordering. She didn't seem to care. The girl making coffee, however, was efficient and took care in getting her orders out. We will not be back. Really enjoyed this place, so much so that I was back twice this week since it opened. The restaurant provides a breakfast, lunch and dinner menu, along with various drink options. I had the matcha (really delicious!) and the greek omelette. OMG the omelette was so good, I had to come back for it a second time. I also had a caramel chocolate chip cookie to go, which was delightful. Service was on par, and they have plenty of seating both inside and out. The art on the wall makes the ambiance fun, and overall it looks like they didnt hold back on making the place look really nice. Even the bathrooms had beautiful tile work. This place has quickly become a regular favorite for us for breakfast and lunch - especially ideal for grabbing a late breakfast or a quick sandwich. The food and coffee are consistently good, service is friendly and the vibe is relaxed and comfortable. Many times I'm worried about getting a table, because a lot of solo people seem to be parking themselves at a table with their laptop for hours at a time. But so far we've always been lucky to nab a table - although sometimes it's the last one! read more

a new guy at the register (nice guy) neglected to add protein to my bowl. Oops, that happens. It arrived and I sent it back. Everyone else finishes their food (10-15mins) and finally someone comes to inform me they didn't charge me for the protein, so pay up. Had they said that when I sent it back, sure no problem, but now I have to eat when everyone else is finished, so I said no. No manager attempted to address the issue. I requested a refund. 10mins and nothing. I finally asked, and was told I was refunded with no proof. I demanded a receipt, and NO REFUND. THEY LIED TO ME. When a manager finally got to a register to refund me, I told him, "I'm a local doctor and at least 50 patients are gonna ask me how my weekend was. Do you really want me to tell them about this?" The manager said "no, I do not", so I said "pack it to go and I will be happy." After a few minutes, I was refunded and told that's it. They threw my food in the trash and I left unfed and flabbergasted. Shame, the chai was decent. I do hope this review helps someone make a different choice. Edit: I was reminded the difference on the menu for a veg vs chicken bowl was less than what they tried to charge me after by ~$3 more... for less than $4, they get this review and lose customers for life. read more

My first time going with two other people and we know it's suppose to be healthy for you, but we found the food bland. The coffee was good and we liked your desserts. I'm usually not a French fries person, but I had a few of my daughter's and I thought they were good. The pasta salad wasn't the greatest, plus they give it to you in a very small white cup the size of an applesauce cup. It's pricey, so, for the price you paid they should give you a little bit more. read more
