This office is a total scam. I have tried them a few times, and am consistently disappointed. I was told my appointment was technically over due to time limitations- even before seeing a medical professional (this was 15min after my scheduled appointment time even though I was in the waiting room for 10 of those minutes). Once seen, the appointment was less than 4 minutes. It included a 12 second look at my skin, a prescription written, and no answers to my questions. I never write reviews, but if you are seeking medical help from Southern Marin Dermatology go elsewhere; this place falls epically short. read more

They removed a skin tag from my eye area and a shave biopsy of another growth on my eyelid area. The skin tag removal was $20. I've never been to a doctors office where I've received excellent care at a reasonable rate. The quality of care was amazing. The office and staff are lovely and efficient. I absolutely love everything about SMD! Dr. Smith is amazing--she dissolved some undereye filler that had been bothering me for years, and I couldn't be happier with the results. I tend to bruise very easily, but she truly has the magic touch. She takes so much care to make sure there's little to no bruising, which makes all the difference with filler or Botox. I started seeing Dr. Westfall in February 2024 for a rare hair loss condition called lichen planopilaris. It's an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the hair follicles and kills them! I had been seeing a dermatologist at Kaiser, who was good but relied on a treatment of steroid injections. Dr. Westfall explained that the steroid injections were thinning my skin and not sustainable. She prescribed oral finasteride and minoxidil in addition to continuing the plaquenil that had been previously prescribed by the Derm at Kaiser. The difference from February 2024 to today is astounding. Well, not all of the bald patches have completely filled in It is much better than when I started treatment with her. Aside from being excellent at her craft, she is a very caring and thorough Doctor Who looks at the whole patient, including regular blood work to detect anything else that might be impacting the result(turned out. I was low in iron which she caught.). I can't say enough good things about her . I've seen the reviews are mostly positive, although a few have commented that the staff have been unfriendly. That has not been my experience and I definitely take advantage of the patient portal which is the easiest way to get a hold of the PAs or doctors for any questions or issues or even scheduling an appointment. Highly recommend ! I haven't done any cosmetic treatments with them, but I did recommend them to my neighbor who did IPL and was very happy. read more

I came to southern Marin to remove (freeze off) a lesion on my skin. The told me that if the lesion is not gone with the first freeze, the follow up is free. When it wasn't gone and I came for a follow up, they charged me again -- and billed my insurance. Insurance didn't pay for it again, rightfully so. And they sent my bill to collections. Through this whole process it was impossible to talk to anyone at southern marin dermatology. They outsource their claims processing to some other company which is completely disconnected and doesn't know what is going on. Oh, the leison was gone immediately after I visited another dermatologist in SF. read more

I have been going to Southern Marin Dermatology for several years, and I have now realized that a review is long overdue. In my experience with them, everyone I have come into contact with has been professional, kind, caring, and happy to spend the time explaining diagnoses and possible treatments with me. This includes the front desk staff, as well as the medical assistants, both of whom I would like to give a special shout out to! The front desk staff has always been great about scheduling appointments, and both the front desk staff and the medical assistants have been wonderful in helping to resolve any insurance issues. Another special shout out to the aesthetician Patricia, who recommended the best products for my skin type, and they have worked wonderfully. On the medical side, I have at various times seen Dr. Westphal, PA Novak, and PA Parker, all of whom have been wonderful. I had to have a cyst removed from my back earlier this year, and PA Parker and the medical assistants made me feel comfortable and at ease with the procedure. I highly recommend Southern Marin Dermatology to anyone looking for a one stop shop dermatology practice. The practice just recently celebrated its tenth anniversary, and I hope it continues for many more decades. Oh, and by the way, their products are wonderful! I was a loyal patient until an experience with the office manager Stephanie. I can't believe there is a human being who is that exceedingly cruel. I got hit by a car as a pedistrian that collapsed the left side of my face (all bones broken, skin ripped off, cheek that needed to be reconstructed). About an year and a half into the healing process (and my heavily scarred skin regrew), I started to get treatments with my trusty dermatologist Ashley. I live an hr and half away and had to move my appointment day of when my original ride fell through (i was not mobile enough to drive). The front desk told me they would back to me but it got so close to the time I had to leave, I called them multiple times to get a final answer of if they could push back to appointment. If no, it's ok - I would find another ride (as I was still paralyzed and immboile during this period). Stephanie called me back and told me I called too many times and told me never to call again. I got a letter in the mail asking me to never return. I was not rude, I did not cause a scene: I simply called so many times to get an answer. I don't write reviews often but SM, Stephanie is a horrible human being and a horrible representative to the SM brand. I'm 10000% sure this was not an isolated incident and she treats many patients like this. read more

Love SMD! Been going there since it opened and have watched the practice grow. Going to their office feels like a vacation - so sleek and amazing views of the bay and all the sailboats. I see Dr Smith yearly for routine skin cancer check ups and now my husband sees her too. During shelter in place she was able to do a remote appointment and prescribe a topical for my Rosacia that flared - a little too much stress and chocolate. She gave me wonderful advice on a couple of her products that would work well and I have been loving my skin all summer... too bad no one besides my family can see it Highly recommend the practice! read more

I originally had gone to SMD when Dr. Fardin, co owner, was practicing. She was terrific.... caring and talented. It was not impossible to speak to the front desk. As she was on extended leave, I saw another dermatologist for a few years who was also terrific. When that dermatologist retired, I returned to SMD and started seeing Dr. Smith. The futility in trying to speak to front desk staff or Dr. Smith regarding scheduling, billing and follow up is pretty depressing. In an attempt to combat the look (and feel) of consternation permanently etching itself into my face in response to the general dismal state of things I went to SMD and paid an exorbitant price to have botulism injected. Within a few days I knew something was wrong, one of my eyebrows was acting strange and out of sync with the other; I went back to the office and they used more Botox I suppose in an attempt to counterbalance what was happening...this did not help. Needless to say (ha!) I haven't really wanted to write about a Botox mishap for all of the obvious reasons but many months later my forehead/eyebrow is still out of whack and I thought Hmm I best share my experience. Unlike EVERY place you purchase products from (Ulta, Nordstroms, etc.), they do not provide exchanges or refunds! There is no sign, regarding this policy, in their lobby, nor is it evident on their website. They were out of a tinted sunblock, so I bought what they had in stock. I didn't like it. It turned my face white. I drove there to exchange for the tinted, and they turned me away. If you are going to compete with these other companies, than you should do exchanges or refunds. I will be taking mine and my daughter's business elsewhere. read more

Dr. Smith is my hero. I am 44 years old and have struggled with cystic acne for years. I was told my only hope for clear skin was avoiding dairy. Dr. Smith put me on a new skim regime and my acne has cleared up and I can eat dairy. She is a great doctor, down to earth, genuine and listens carefully. The doctors are great. The office staff--in particular, the front desk need A LOT of work. They never answer the phone! Instead it seems they prefer you leave a voicemail and they call you back. If their online reservation system managed appointments that would help, but it doesn't. I actually had to drive down there to make an appointment in person. Not ideal and I've been a client for years referring friends along the way. Tough to consider continuing treatments when you can't make an appointment and don't hear back. Plenty of other options in California. Doctors--Please look into how your business is run. Ask your clients! This needs to be turned around. read more

I wish I would have taken the time to read some of the negative Yelp reviews as they were very similar to my experience with SMD. My husband was a patient of SMD so I chose to go to them for a consultation about removing a few moles, not to actually remove them but merely discuss with the doctor given they were on my face and I was concerned about scarring. While scheduling the appointment, at no point did the front desk advise of any fees of any kind, it was also not disclosed in the any of new patient paperwork. They requested a copy of my insurance card and I very clearly asked why it was needed as I was only wanting to discuss removal. They advised it was needed if a procedure was done, so I complied. I had the appointment which went fine, about 15 minutes, and we discussed all my concerns. A few weeks later, I received a bill in the mail. SMD submitted the appointment to my insurance showing a charge of $189 and my responsibility was $117. As they didn't perform a procedure, I thought it would be quick correction. After speaking to the billing department and two or three other people in the office, I finally spoke with Stephanie, the office manager. I explained that I wasn't advised prior to the appointment of any fees and she said that they have contract with the insurance company therefore can bill even if no procedure was done. Stephanie was extremely aggressive with me over the phone, didn't seem to have any care or concern regarding the miscommunication, actually laughed at me when I asked if she could credit me for the outstanding balance as I was not properly advised, and then threatened to charge me an even higher cosmetic fee. I explained that I didn't feel it was appropriate to charge me any fee without disclosing it prior to the appointment. However she said she would consult with the doctors and get back to me. I was quite upset after the call given her hostile tone, I have never been treated with such disrespect by a doctors office. Stephanie didn't follow-up with me as she advised she would for 20 days after the call despite my follow-ups with the office. After I finally reached out to the doctor who I saw at the appointment, Stephanie responded with no new information or care, and mentioned that they did not advise that the appointment was complementary - no, but SMD also did not disclose of any fee in advance. I then reached out to Dr. Smith, as I think it is important for them to be aware of the disappointing experience and aggressive manner of the office manager. Dr. Smith did respond promptly however did not seem to have any care of the disturbing treatment I received from the office manager and said "We try to be very clear with our charges, and the last thing we want is someone to be blindsided with fees." She then advised of what their fees are - this would have been helpful information to have prior to the appointment. I clarified again that I was not made aware of any fee whatsoever, prior to the appointment, whether medical or cosmetic. After 10 days Dr. Smith has not responded. My appointment was only a consultation, I don't understand why it would be so difficult for the front desk to properly advise of the fees. If it is SMD's customary practice to charge for consultation or office fees, they should have readily disclosed it prior to the appointment, and especially when I asked why my insurance information was needed. It seems that the front desk is unaware of the fees and that management doesn't deem it appropriate to rectify the situation when they clearly made a mistake. By not acknowledging or further inquiring to the poor and hostile tone of the office manager, they are clearly supportive of this mistreatment to their clients. There are plenty of other dermatologists in the bay area. The one thing that sets a business apart is their customer service, which was extremely lacking and disturbing in my case from SMD. If you want to have respectful care, I would suggest looking elsewhere. read more

This review is specifically for Jaime. Hands down, she is amazing. I had coolsculpting done on my flanks by her. But for the record, I did go to another place for a consultation (Hayes Medical). I picked SMD because of Jaime. She is funny, down to earth and she made me feel comfortable and she didn't have a judging or condescending attitude. Jaime made the procedure go seamlessly. She was able to do both sides at once so I didn't have to spend my day there. Coolsculpting here is better priced too. They also have coolsculpting lunches where you can get 20% off.
