When I have had bad experiences I don't go online with negative feedback, I just don't recommend them or use them again. However, I have had a terrible experience with Southern Moving and Storage in Wilmington, NC which has been going for six months. They damaged a lot of high end furniture which was pure neglect, not an accident. Since December the owner, Macon Bullard, continues to put us off saying he is looking into it. We have completed all of the damage forms and still crickets. When the owner of the company plays this type of game you can only imagine what the culture of their company and employees are. Not Golden Retriever Approved I booked this move months in advance, hoping for a smooth transition--especially with a mother-in-law in our home who has dementia. What we got instead was a four-day ordeal that felt more chaotic than coordinated. Day 1: After being told "on the way" all day, the crew finally arrived around 4pm--eight hours late--with an attitude, one guy eating fruit snacks, another on the phone, and two others we never saw. They took two beds (why two? We still don't know) and left trash on our porch. Day 2: They showed up two hours late again, this time with only three guys, and worked until about 2am. It felt like a scramble rather than a plan. Day 3: I ended up hiring one of the movers privately to help with the boxes they didn't get to--because yes, we still had boxes sitting in the driveway. Day 4: I went to U-Haul myself to pick up the remaining 15+ boxes and miscellaneous items they didn't have time to grab. Turns out there was a scheduling mishap--the person who booked our move didn't pass along the right information. Mistakes happen, and the manager who called did offer apologies, but not many solutions. We did get a reduced bill, which we appreciated, but the stress and disorganization were far more costly. I chose this company because of the golden retriever on their logo. I assumed that meant reliability, friendliness, and care. I would not recommend this company for a long-distance move . I moved from Wilmington NC to Tucson AZ and had my belongings in storage with them for about a month. The original estimate for weight was way off which I was aware of from the weight of a previous move. Had I not gone with the truck drivers to the weigh station after loading I would not be surprised if they would have charged me for the estimate of approximately 8000 pounds when it actually weight about 4000 pounds. I was told my belongings were stored with mine alone. However, one box was lost, and I had another's belongings placed in one of my boxes I did not tape shut. They are evidently self-insured which I neglected to ask prior to the move. It took numerous phone calls and emails to arrange for repair/replacement of some items. Many calls were not returned. My biggest complaint is that the movers did not place any stickers on any items moved including boxes. I have moved cross country many times and alwasys the movers placed stickers on every item. The Southern Mover estimator came to our home to physically review what was to be moved. They provided a low , medium and high quote. Based on the visit and the quote we decided not to pursue other quotes. The day of the move they were late and about 4:30 they determined they would need another truck. After several calls a truck was scheduled for the next morning . The day of the move in they were late and when we called they advised that one of the 3 trucks and broken down , when we made follow - ups calls for ETA we were advised that 2 of the 3 trucks had broken down. Finally trucks arrived and after about 60% of trucks were unloaded got a call from the owner advising us that - the actual weight was 70% more that their high estimate and 83% over the high cost estimate. The only way we would get truck unloaded was to agree to the increase and pay it immediately ( we had already given them a certified check for the medium quote as agreed to ) . Than he did offer a discount .The next day I looked closer at the bill and realized not only was the weight off by 70% they increase the per pound cost . In their quote as pounds went up , per pound cost went down - so the " discount" was factored into the price. I followed up with ownership with specific questions and they advised he would review and call me , no call, I followed up - was told the owner would call the next day to review . The next day I got an e mail explaining that although they had professional estimators - it is only an estimate . Not sure if it is total incompetence related to estimating or simply a random price provided to get the business . Once they get your furniture on the truck you are pretty much hostage to their terms - at least with these folks. Unless you don't care about cost , communications and good faith I would avoid. It has been several weeks since our move and we have gotten no follow up communication from ownership . The only thing we have gotten since the move has been broken or damaged items. It appears that Macon the owner responds to these reviews but in our case nothing - We can only assume that the bait and switch tactic used is a common tactic used by the folks - AVOID !!! read more

I would not recommend this Wilmington moving company. So many reasons why... Arrived without a ramp, turned all dressers, buffets, upside down--absolutely no need to have done this, scratched floors at both homes, ripped and damaged mattress and box springs--no mattress/boxspring covers, ceiling and floor damage in stairwell, damaged, scratched furniture (round coffee table and armoire), one of your men peed all over the toilet and bathroom floor, complaints every single time they had to go upstairs, everything that had to go upstairs was a chore, did not move all of the requested items from home to new home, we still have items in our garage that we will need to hire another company to move, the main contact for the move approached me after the truck was loaded to tell me that the charge would be more and it was a far heavier load than what was quoted. I was told that it was by the hour, not the weight. What was I supposed to say when all of my belongings had been already been loaded on a truck...? Extortion. The additional items that were added and I did discuss with Suzanne were boxes. All of which they used a dolly for in and outside of the house. They used a dolly on our hardwood floors to take the boxes upstairs. The approach at the end of the job was awful as well. The way that he spoke to me was disrespectful and rude. It was wrong to charge over $800 more for the move after they had put all of our belongings on a truck. I had no choice or ability to speak with someone. He was only concerned with getting my credit card number. Follow-up was disappointing as well. They could have done the right thing, but chose not too. While Suzanne was kind and apologetic, the resolution should have been presented in a manner to resolve and correct our concern. It was not. They damaged several pieces of furniture, walls and floors in both homes. Highly suggest not using them for your future move. I absolutely hate to leave a review like this, but at the same time I would want to know about this experience if I were getting ready to hire this company. read more

About 2 years ago, Southern Moving and Storage helped move us into our new home, and I regret not leaving a review then. I have since crossed paths with this company in an entirely different way and I feel compelled to share my experience. For our move two years ago, they were so professional, quickly moved through our home loading and unloading boxes - all through the pouring rain. Susan (owners mother) came to check in on us on our moving day, which was beyond kind and gave us piece of mind that this job was important to them. Absolutely nothing was broken and they moved two semi truck loads for us. I could not recommend this company enough for moving services and I'm deeply sorry I didn't share this wonderful experience previously. I crossed paths with Southern Moving yet again today, as a volunteer for the Free Christmas Shop. Southern Moving had opened their entire warehouse for our organization which provides Christmas gifts and essential supplies for families in the Wilmington NC area. The level of compassion this company displays should be commended greatly - they offered their warehouse, gave us packing supplies, and even donated employee time to help us leading up to the event (including packaging and delivering all the items to our event). All I can say is thank you- thank you Macon, Southern Moving, and thank you to your wonderful employees for the generosity, kindness, and compassion for your community. Do not go through Southern Guarantee to move - they are BROKERS, not the actual moving company! Contact a moving company DIRECTLY... this will save you a ton of money. The deposit you pay goes directly to the broker, NOT TOWARD YOUR MOVE. Also, there will be hidden costs... no matter how diligent you are in providing Southern Guarantee a true and accurate inventory. These companies don't communicate so if the moving company has different policies than Southern Guarantee, you have to abide by the moving company's policy... that's where the hidden fees come in. And Southern Guarantee DOES NOT disclose this. Oh they give vague reference in the fine print, but they are not communicative about ANYTHING when you are coordinating with their representatives. By the time you actually have an opportunity to read the estimate in its entirety, you are committed. They push you and tell you the "quote" they are giving you is only good for that moment. So you pay their deposit and think they are being up front about everything. They are not. In addition, Southern Guarantee ONLY cares about the deposit you make at the beginning... after that they don't care whatsoever how complicated or expensive it gets because you either suck it up and pay or cancel the move and lose the deposit. I feel so sorry for people who have a very limited budget and get handed a bunch of extra costs with no recourse. The movers themselves were fine and are only doing their job... the real crook here is the broker... in this case Southern Guarantee. Finally - pay in cash!!! You will be charged a ridiculous fee to use a credit or debit card. Southern Guarantee will not tell you that... oh they will say you can pay with a credit card, but they won't mention the fees. I called SM&S on a Tuesday morning and Rob, the owner of the cleaning division, called me back before lunch. He had someone out to my place the next day and let me tell you- she went above and beyond what I asked her to do! I was looking for a deep clean (baseboards, fans, vents, windows, blinds... the shit I never do) and not only did she make those things look move in ready, she organized the rooms along the way. She was here for 4 hours and didn't take a single break. 11/10- would recommend and will use again! read more

I would give them a negative 10 stars if it was possible. DO NOT USE these people unless you want your prescriptions stolen, your belongings rifled through and half of your stuff broken. They quoted one price but ended up doubling it. None of my priceless heirlooms were wrapped. They triple boxed some item pushing up box count. When they delivered our stuff they sent 3 trucks and 3 men. Nothing was put in the right rooms and they did not reassemble anything they took apart but the bed frame. There was over 20,000 worth of damage. Have not found everything as of yet. They charged 35k to move 300 miles. In July 2022, "Ben" at Southern Guarantee quoted me $7064 to move my 3 bdrm home from Boise to North Carolina. I repeatedly tried to give him measurements of things to ensure accuracy and a correct quote. He told me it would be fine and what he was putting in would leave me plenty of extra room. August...comes the day the moving people arrive. They then quote me over 12K to move my things! I told them not happening and told them I'd move myself for that price...which I ended up doing with Uhaul. Southern Guarantee then told me the $2326 I'd already paid them could go towards another move in a year. Fast forward to today. I moved the majority of the things myself cross country in a Uhaul for less than $6k including the gas but ran out of space for bringing a couch, recliner, coffee table and one double bed. I called Southern Guarantee to move what was left in my home now that Ive sold it so that I could use the amount I'd already paid them. Guess what....they informed me that even though I only had those four items that needed moved, I'd still owe them the difference of what they first quoted me....yeah...do the math....that's $4738. I booked for a cross country move 2 months in advance. I had a 4 bedroom 2 car garage that needed packed and loaded. I paid for a full service move. They were supposed to pack, load, ship, unload, and unpack at my new house. The people they sent showed up at 5pm on a Friday. It was only 3 people and they had no idea they were supposed to pack. They did not have any packing supplies. They head guy spent 2 hours doing an inventory even though I had already done that over the phone. They left around 7:30pm and not touched a thing. We attempted to call Southern Moving and storage but they were closed. My husband and I got up early Saturday morning to begin packing. We had to pack everything ourselves at the last minute because they did not send any packers. I had also paid for 1600 cubic feet in a truck to move my stuff. Once on site, the subcontracted company tried to get $5000 more dollars out of me saying I only paid for 800 square feet. This company is dishonest and does not deliver what is written in the contract. I messed my back up packing and moving heavy stuff that I had not intended to do. The guys were really nice and I appreciated their help. They did not wear a mask, though. I sent pictures and the estimate was four hours and $480 but it took six hours (and I helped) and was $720. Both apartments (to and from) were down a long hallway but I wish that would've been asked in the estimate. Stairs/elevators were asked. They were given the wrong address to start with. Overall, I'm happy that I am moved, they showed up, were on time, and were nice. I wish I'd known it would take so much longer and that the price would be so much more.
