We brought home a six-month-old German Shepherd who didn't have any socialization. She was very reactive towards other dogs. When we signed up for the group lesson with Mike, I was worried about what would happen with all the other dogs! But he assured me to be there without rejecting her, knowing she'd act crazy! When we showed up, she was barking, lunging, and going crazy since we got off the car, and we couldn't go near at all!! This continued for maybe four sessions in. Then Mike grabbed her leash and corrected her. That's all it took! He showed us how to fix the situation and stay consistent at it. Look at the picture! We have two German Shepherd rescue puppies (1 years old and 1 1/2 years old) so we needed someone who was knowledgeable with the breed and had experience working with German Shepherds as we had none! When we first sat down with Mike, he was thorough in explaining the entire training process, which included no shock collars and no treats. Mike came to our house each week and walked us through a different command/skill that we would work on with the puppies on our own for the remainder of the week. He would correct our delivery of the command as needed and was very patient since we had two puppies training at the same time. I didn't really know what I should look for when seeking a professional dog trainer. As a first time pet owner I did my best to train myself but my knowledge was limited and to be honest the online resources, particularly YouTube, just aren't that sophisticated. My pup is at his best behavior and while he is a work in progress, all dogs are, I've seen significant improvements with just 6 lessons and will continue to in the months and years to come. The most valuable thing from the whole experience is that the lessons are not about training your dog, it's about training you how to train your dog. Everything falls into place after that. Pax and I just completed group lessons with Mike from Southern Nevada Dog Training and we can't recommend him enough. Pax is my first dog, a senior rescue German Shepherd. He was a well behaved dog when he adopted me, but he wasn't obedient. I was alittle worried that his age would make training difficult. I saw obedience training as a good way to build a bond with my new pal. But so many of the trainers around here were using shock collars. Maybe that is necessary for some dogs, but there was no way I was going to start off with such heavy handed methods for a dog that was already well behaved. I found Southern Nevada Dog Training did not use shock collars and the price was well below any other trainers so I gave them a call. When class started I was shocked to find out that not only did he not use shock collars but he didn't use treats or food as a training tool. Everything was based on rewarding the dog with praise. The training is not difficult but you do need to put the work in with the dog, and if you do you will see results. The key here is that Mike doesn't train your dog (at least not in the group classes) he trains you on how to train your dog. I would have no problem starting over with a new dog now because of what Mike has taught me. read more
