This was a wonderful dining experience. The office I work for decided to have Southern Roots for the company Thanksgiving luncheon! The service was top notch friendly. The Cornbread is the best I've ever had. And my Steak wrap was tender and full of flavor. I'm extremely impressed!!! The restaurant isn't very large, so at times it got very loud. It was busy the entire time so that's understandable. The restaurant was very clean and so were the bathrooms. Stylish decor and a minimalist vibe to encourage conversations. Our meal from Southern Roots Restaurant embodied the soul of Southern cuisine. I loved every bite of the fried green tomatoes appetizer. The tomatoes are perfectly cooked and have a crunchy golden crust. To top it all off: a dynamite combo of maple bacon jam and gouda pimento cheese seals the deal. Needless to say, Southern Roots did this classic dish justice. The shrimp and grits dish was everything you want in this Southern staple: tender shrimp, thick grits, and a creamy sauce. The lobster ravioli took my breath away - the filling was to die for! The tomato sauce was beautifully seasoned and the tomatoes tasted fresh off the vine. Tables were appropriately spaced apart indoors, and outdoor patio seating was also available. The restaurant takes reservations for lunch but not dinner, so plan accordingly! read more

Southern Roots has been on our list of places to try, and we got the chance for the first time last night to celebrate my wife's birthday. They are open for dine-in, as well as outside dining and takeout. We got the takeout, which did suffer in quality and presentation from a half hour drive back home. The restaurant is located in a nice area of Jamestown but with an odd parking situation. You basically have to park in an overflow parking lot behind a condo community. Entrance to the restaurant is also in the rear, so I had a nice little stroll. I went prime time on Friday night, and it was indeed loud and crowded in there. People shoulder to shoulder at the bar with no masks. Staff were wearing masks, but I did note one cook in the open kitchen area with his mask open. I felt like a fish out of water, as I was severely underdressed for this jaunt. Also, whoever packed the food to go did not do a great job, as the platters tilted and sauce spillage did occur. All that said, the taste of the food we got was great! Fried stuff did get soggy due to the takeout, but they obviously got the cook and the seasoning down perfect. My one complaint on the food was the fried green tomatoes app, which included a meager 4 tomatoes for the $12 price. They were very good though, and my wife really liked the bacon jam. We also got the fried oysters, which were great with the sriracha aioli but probably skippable in the future. That is really my only complaint food-wise though. Everything else was great. We got the stuffed rainbow trout which was very flavorful. First time I've ever had rainbow trout and I would get it again. Shrimp and grits was also fantastic. Nice and cheesy. We also got the veggie plate to get a sampling of sides - we got the tomato pie, onion pie, spaghetti squash, and mac and cheese. All these were flavorful, saucy, and comforting. And the best thing we got was the burger. Not sure if it's because it survived the takeout the best, but this burger was legit. Lots of the Gouda pimento cheese cooked in. Yummy bacon, caramelized onions, and a perfect med rare cook. No sauce needed. Surprisingly one of the best burgers I've had, and I've been privileged to have some amazing burgers here in the Triad. The only surprise was no kaiser roll, despite stating on the menu that it comes with kaiser roll. The bun was still very good, just unexpected. Honorable mentions too to the cornbread side and eggplant fries. While the presentation did suffer for the takeout, it was still smushy yummy. I would recommend going for the outside dining there. Can't speak much to the service, but the noise level and crowding did make me uncomfortable as far as staying inside for any length of time there, especially to take the mask off to eat. Food is a bit pricey, but aside from the fried green tomatoes, it was all worth it. read more

My party and I waited for almost 2 hours, and no one up front came to notify us of why the wait was happening. A quaint restaurant my wife and I visited for lunch when we had travelled to the area looking for furniture at Furnitureland South. Parking was rather difficult and we parked across the street (at the risk of getting towed) in a Wells Fargo Bank that was closed (for good). The staff was very friendly, from the petite woman hostess to our waiter, Josh, and the server. Go early if you want the special Reuben, they were out of it when I was ordering and settled for the Angus burger, asked for medium rare. Sadly it came back almost well done. Still the flavor was great with the aioli sauce and bacon. My wife had The Hill (check out the menu for that. She really liked it. It took some time for our order to arrive, but Josh checked in with us from time to time. When it came time to pay, he informed me that the burger was taken off the bill, due to the cook's error. I had not asked him to do that, merely pointed out that it was clearly not medium rare. To be honest, I do not like sending food back, especially in restaurants I have not visited before. You never know what they will do to your food, LOL I do recommend the restaurant as it appears to be a business of integrity and the service was very good. read more

It was me and my families first time visiting, the service was terrible the waiter was not customer service orientated. I ask what he would recommend he looked at me like I was crazy. I order the salmon honey glaze with fried okra and potato mash. The only thing on the plate that taste ok was the potato mash, the salmon wasn't done the okra was black burn up to be exact. Not worth the drive from Winston Salem. It became so noisey it was literally IMPOSSIBLE TO TALK TO EACH OTHER at a small table for two people. No ambience and worse decor. I am so sorry to say that I have an overall bad first impression of this restaurant. A coworker and I we thought we try this place-me for the first time. We were greeted with a warm friendly smile and seated immediately at one of the tables along the back wall where there are 4 tables against a long "sofa". All the other tables there were empty. My coworker said the okra was really delicious, nice and crispy so I thought I'd give that a try with a veggie plate, including the okra, pintos, onion pie and cornbread. When the food came she commented that the okra was not cooked crispy as in the past. She ordered a veggie plate as well and we shared the fried green tomato appetizer w the bacon jam on the sides. Didn't have any of that but the tomatoes with pimento cheese were delicious. Unfortunately, it took them so long to bring veggie plates that we had to ask for to go plates. That's frustrating considering all the people who came in after us got fried chicken, sandwiches and more, before we got our food. And no one checked in to apologize for the delay. We ate at Southern Roots on a Thursday night. It was outstanding and I am a harsh critic. The atmosphere is relaxed, tables are a little close and it can be noisy. The service was attentive without being overbearing and everyone was very friendly. Wine selections were adequate, nothing of particular note. The food was excellent. We started with the fried green tomatoes topped with bacon jam and pimento cheese. Lightly battered, toppings were terrific. I had the cedar plank salmon with fried Brussels sprouts and curried butternut squash and my daughter had the lobster ravioli. Both dishes were well seasoned, flavorful and served hot (which is often not the case). My salmon was cooked perfectly and the curried butternut squash added a really interesting taste contrast and texture. Entrees were in the $18-$32 range. Highly recommend Southern Roots. read more

Hands down my favorite restaurant in Jamestown but definitely top 3 in the Triad area - has been a go to spot almost every year for not only my bday dinner but for friends too which is why we were here that night! Long overdue review on my part too - luckily it wasn't too crowded this past Thursday night when we went and we only waiting about 10-15 minutes for the table for 4. Located right off Main Street, less than a 20 min drive from downtown GSO. They have their own parking lot but it's smaller, however there's plenty of street parking nearby and you can park in the townhomes parking lot across the street where there's a ton of parking. It's everything for me at Southern roots down to the always friendly service, the quick and welcoming bartenders that can make any drink good including our dirty martinis that night which were amazing, the ambiance is just my style - low lighting, open dining area with perfect farmhouse yet chic decor and the food - OMG the food! It's the tastiest filling food where I always have leftovers but don't want to stop eating food. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu but my go to is always the meatloaf - ketchup sauce covered and their fried okra is better than grandmas (and not breaded but crispy/Smokey from the pan and not "slimey" either)! Their shrimp-n-grits are probably my favorite in the area especially with the Tasso gravy ham in them. And I love their grilled romaine salad which is rare to find at places but they do it right - must get the warm bacon vinaigrette too! And all their apps are mouthwatering with flavor - really anything with their pimento cheese is which is why we got both the fried green tomatoes & baked pimento cheese apps that night! I love Southern Roots and hope anyone visiting gives it a try but if you live in the area, absolutely add this place to your go to dine out spot! read more

We have family in town and they suggested we meet here for dinner. We got the catfish, greens and beans of the day (pinto). I felt like I was sitting at my grandma's table (born 1894). This women could COOK and if I closed my eyes I'd think I was seating at her table. In my mind there is no higher praise. We meet early since we had a large party 4:15 by an hour later there was a wait list. It was hard to hear since it is a large open space. However, we just spoke louder. Food is incredible, wait staff is pleasant and quick. But due to the fact there's nothing in the restaurant that cancels noise or muffles it, it is the loudest dining experience. Which makes it uncomfortable because you can't hear the person/people you're sitting with unless you're lucky enough to have nice weather and get to sit outside. Thanks to its proximity to both work and home, its local ownership and use of locally inspired ingredients, and its tantalizing menu, Southern Roots had occupied a spot on my to-try list for quite some time. I finally got my chance today, and while it was an uneven experience, I am glad that I did. Nestled in downtown (if one can call it that) Jamestown across from the post office, Southern Roots is a fairly attractive space inside and out. It features an inviting patio, an elegant long bar, and plenty of wall art though the palette is very muted. My wife and I arrived for lunch to celebrate our anniversary just after noon and had our pick of inside or outside seating. We opted for the former, which ended up being a mistake as we found ourselves in close proximity to two large groups. This made for a louder meal with slower service than anticipated, and one can hope that is the exception rather than the norm here. Southern Roots offers an appealing menu full of local and regional specialties and a few surprises. Fried green tomatoes, pulled pork, and country steak mingle alongside artisanal pizzas (okra with caramelized onions, anyone?), sandwiches, salads, and more. Quinoas and quiches rotate daily, and one can cobble together a vegetarian plate from any four of the dozen-plus sides. My wife and I split the fried green tomatoes (one of our go-to dishes) and went with the Cobb wrap (guac, house-smoked turkey, bacon, tomato, greens, and blue cheese) and seafood risotto (scallops, shrimp, crab, portabellas, and a parmesan cream sauce) respectively. The tomatoes were crispy and very nicely battered, but the dish could have used some more spiciness/smokiness (more pimento, perhaps?) to balance the unexpected sweetness of the accompanying applewood bacon jam. A similar theme could be found in the Cobb wrap. The turkey was great (as were the accompanying sweet potato fries), but there weren't enough vegetables to counter the pungent strength of the blue cheese. The risotto, on the other hand, was magical. Scallops were perfectly seared yet not the least bit tough, shrimp were generously sized, portabella slivers fit in well, and the whole thing was cheesy, creamy perfection. While a pricy dinner option, Southern Roots made for a more affordable than expected lunch. Our app was $8, the wrap was $9 (with one side included), and the seafood risotto was $16. Our server was apologetic regarding delays and acquitted himself well otherwise. All told, while Lucky 32 remains my favorite for upscale Southern, I would still give Southern Roots another try. It would be worth it to learn if this place is ever not busy and if anything on the menu touches the quality of the risotto. read more

All of our meals were delicious, the service was excellent and attentive and our server was very knowledgeable about the menu. Had a terrific dinner here tonight! The table was worth waiting for! I had such a hard time choosing my entree. The pimento cheese app is so made with gruyere I think which adds such a nice flavor. The cornbread was good. The stuffed chicken entree was well cooked and the blue cheese was melted so nicely inside. The grilled okra was nice. I've never had it that way and I'd love to replicate it! The sweet potato fries were excellent. I had a hard time choosing my sides as well. They have a nice selection. All my friends enjoyed their meals. The scallops and lobster ravioli were hits. I will recommend the Thai chili shrimp (is this what they are called I forget lol) and buttermilk fried oysters ANY day. Superb. Our entrees not so much. My fried catfish was bland, so were my cheese grits. My friends crabbed stuff trout was delicious. Eggplant fries were unmemorable. Sweet potato fries not really good either. I ordered slaw with my catfish but my order got messed up and I was given regular fries, also not that great. The cole slaw was terrible, an awful thing really. No flavor at all whatsoever. Despite blandness the food was somewhat enjoyable, not terrible, but nothing to write home about. Dessert was OK. I don't recommend the bread pudding. I enjoyed it but not that much. Price: this place is very expensive and I think that's why I didn't feel comfortable writing a 4-5 star yelp review. The wonderful appetizers were not enough to justify the ridiculous prices here. The food was very average, below average even considering the "gourmet" costs. SN: this place is LOUD. Another kind of turn off. My friend and I could barely converse. Inventive and delicious offerings at Southern Roots. The corn bread was dense and crumbly and infused with the sourness of buttermilk. The accompanying sweet honey butter was a perfect match. The classic salad came with dressing, thoughtfully on the side. We were grateful for that, as the vinegary balsamic dressing was flavor-forward and we only needed a tiny amount to go with the tender greens, walnuts, honeycomb and strawberries. The star of the evening was the okra pizza. The charred okra and tomatoes covered by melted cheese were absolutely mouthwatering.
