Wednesday night at 6:30 and this place is POPULAR! Not only is it packed, but everyone in the place is dressed to kill. I don't know where they ordered these ladies and gentlemen from, but they only got the pretty ones. I wound up eating at the bar rather than waiting 45 minutes for a depressing table for one. NC Lump stuffed seabass with slaw and okra was exceptional. Really tasty, skin on, truly fantastic. I get why this place is popular. Also, the entire town is cute and seems pretty fun. I passed yoga in the park, guitar karaoke, and more pretty people out enjoying. read more

Exceptional Seafood Gumbo! Every once in a while one encounters a dish that is a sincere joy to consume. Not just a tasty dish but one that is "an experience" to savor while eating and in one's memory, as well. That is the Seafood Gumbo... 5 shrimp with their tail shells already removed, 3 large perfectly cooked fresh scallops, okra that is tender and a broth that explodes with seafood flavor and just the exact amount of heat to deliver gustatory heaven. The Tito's on the rocks was full strength and not watered down. However, I would suggest getting rid of the green olives stuffed with blue cheese as the cheese the olive stuffers use is never a good quality. The usual pimento stuffed olives are far better. The service was slow which was puzzling as it did not appear to be that busy when we arrived. The joint was packed when we left. Perhaps they had unexpected no shows by staff members!?! There is a reasonable amount of time to wait for placing an order and waiting for the check. Stretching out either of those time frames can result in a reduced tip (not this time, though... benefit of the doubt). Do be aware that the bread pudding for dessert may be different from what you are expecting. To me a bread pudding is moist and holds together with an unmistakable punch of flavor. The bread pudding here is drier with more of a coffee cake crossed with a biscuit texture and the flavor was very, very mild. It was too big a difference for me. (I do recognize different recipes, preferences and expectations exist. This just was not a match for mine.) However, the Seafood Gumbo is one of those "once a year" experiences. Indulge! read more

We came here last night for the first time and it was a great decision! Southern Roots has a beautiful exterior that leads into a delightful interior! Both our hostess and waitress were welcoming, easy to speak to, and worked to serve us efficiently! We ordered off of the special dinner menu a delicious salmon dish with a side of spaghetti squash and eggplant fries! The food was plated WONDERFULLY, as the salmon was placed atop a wooden circular plater! The flavors were excellent! We had a wonderful time visiting and look forward to returning! read more

If you live in the Triad area of NC then you must try this place out. It's a hidden gem tucked out of the way in rural Jamestown, NC, and it's worth the drive from anywhere in the area. In fact, this place has now become my go-to restaurant when I have guests in from out of town. It's just that unique and that good! The food is fantastic, and, in my opinion, there's very little competition for food this good in Greensboro and the surrounding area. I've been to Southern Roots a few times now and have sampled a number of their appetizers, entrees, and sides, and I must say that every single item I've had has been out of this world. Some recent things I've tried include their Filet mignon, which was tender and exquisite, the white bean and bacon soup, which was mouth-watering, and their fried catfish, which was amazing (take it from this Louisiana boy). Last night we also tried the fried oysters and sweet potato fries as appetizers. The oysters were possibly some of the best fried oysters I've had, and they were topped with the tastiest Remoulade sauce I think I've ever eaten! The sweet potato fries were awesome as well. On another visit, I tried the meatloaf pizza (yep, you heard me right). I ordered this because I heard meatloaf was one of their specialities. Well, I'm glad I ordered it because it was quite delicious--it featured a crispy thin crust with crumbled meatloaf and fresh mozzarella! Yum! I also tried the bread pudding, and, boy, I'm glad I did. All I can say is, "Wow!" It was some of the best bread pudding I'd ever had. Nom! Nom! Nom! Southern Roots is more than just good food. The atmosphere is charming and welcoming, the wait staff are first class. Souther Roots also has a great bar, so if you want to have a more casual experience, you can relax in the bar instead of table service. I love this place. A little bummed I didn't start coming here sooner. The food is great. The prices are great. They carry my favorite cider here and the best part is the environment. I love the style and decor of this place. So cute, clean and simple. Great location, fun back side patio seating with live music on warm nights. You can sit at the bar, at the tables or out in the back. I will definitely come here again and recommend it to anyone in the area who's looking for a nice place to have lunch or dinner. I ordered the grilled fish tacos with sweet potato fries. Appetizer: The Gouda cheese was delicious served with slices of beet and honeycomb along with roasted, glazed pecans. So yummy. read more

Amazing spot ! High quality southern food Only complaints was that it was a little crowded and the corn bread had a bit of a bitter taste but it was warm and a little moist ! Went on a Thursday night and it was pretty busy. Seafood risotto was unbelievable served with full scallops, the steaks and meatloaf were great and there were plenty of AMAZING side options ranging from eggplant fries and Brussel sprouts to mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese. Great environment. Had a wonderful time VERY cheap beers both on tap and in bottles ($2-4) mixed drinks were closer to $11. Had a wonderful time. I was finally able to visit this establishment that my godmother raves about. We were greeted immediately. There wasn't a wait. The crab cake was delicious. The fried catfish was exceptional. Great Southern comfort food! Upscale atmosphere. Service has always been very great. I recommend the Billy Bob either on the sour dough bread as it comes or, leave the bread off and ask for it on a bed of mixed greens. Outstanding if you love fried green tomatoes and bacon! Their lima beans are my favorite vegetable! Best strawberry red velvet cake ever!!! The only one drawback I have is on busy nights it tends to be rather loud inside. You may not hear your guest very well unless you sit on the patio. Outside of that, I love it. We need more restaurants like this in the area. Grade A! read more

It was a beautiful day and I felt like a drive so off I went to Jamestown from Summerfield to try Southern Roots for lunch. I had been there many years ago when I worked nearby and remembered it being very good. I started with a petit caesar with roasted romas and plenty of parm, very good salad and well sized. Next came hangar steak, onion pie and the Brussels of course, my favorite veggie. The portions were a bit small but perfect for lunch and after the salad, just right to fill me up. The prices are a bit high but that's normal these days and you get what you pay for, and I did here. My server was a bit aloof and disinterested in making small talk, which is normal for me but evidently he wasn't into it, oh well. I was alone so entertained myself, ha ha. I chose to sit inside but the outside patio is gorgeous and very large. Next pretty day, I'll be back to try more of the menu. The meatloaf looks yummy! read more

4.5 Stars After several years of eating at Southern Roots and eating a variety of menu items I figured it was time for a review. Arriving a Friday evening around 6:00 we were put on a waitlist as expected. This place is always busy and loud, especially on Friday or Saturday evening. After having a few drinks by the bar we were seated and our server immediately arrived. For appetizers we ordered a Half Loaf of Focaccia, my wife's go to Petite SR Organic Salad, and an Iceberg Wedge Salad. The bread as always is very good. Served warm with an herb butter it's hard not to eat it all quickly. My wedge salad was as excellent with a generous amount of blue cheese crumbles and crispy smoked bacon. My wife loves the Organic Salad. The piece of honeycomb on it really brings a sense of Spring and warmer months. For entrees I ordered the Soft Shell Crab special with Sautéed Okra and Green Beans. I wanted the Onion Pie before ordering the beans but they were already out of it for the night. My wife's plate consisted of Cheese Grits, Eggplant Fries, Roasted Brussel Sprouts, and Garlic Spinach. My Soft Shell Crabs were delicious. A light crispy batter covered them and a remoulade came on the side. I don't know if it was natural or from the prep but the crabs had a brininess that I haven't noticed before from any other establishment's SSC's. My Okra was charred just a little too much IMO and could have used some seasoning. The Green Beans were not overcooked in a well seasoned ham based broth. The star on my wife's plate was the Cheese Grits. Plenty of cheese and seasoned well I would eat a bowl of these anytime. The Brussel Sprouts had some sort of chili sauce on them that was good but could have been left off. Eggplant fries are Eggplant fries. Battered in probably the same thing as my crabs, tasty but texture wise are not my favorite. The Garlic Spinach was cooked well so the greens were wilted and not mushy. Overall, Southern Roots is a great place. Once you get past the noise and are seated the meals and service don't let you down. read more

Really enjoyed our visit to Southern Roots! I had the grilled peaches and Vidialia onions salad with grilled salmon. It was the perfect lunch for a hot day. The salad was delicious and came with a great lemon vinaigrette. My husband enjoyed the meatloaf that came with two sides. He had amazing grits and tomato pie. This upscale southern food at its best. Southern Roots is our go-to anniversary spot. Delicious, southern, upscale food in a sweet location on Main Street in Jamestown. My only complaint is that they are so popular, especially around college graduations in May, so if you don't go early, you may not get in (and they don't take reservations). However, their customer service is terrific, and the food is always worth the wait. Food recommendations: Warm Gouda Pimento Cheese for an appetizer, and the Shrimp and Grits for an entree, though my hubby thoroughly enjoyed the meatloaf. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu, though! read more

Went for dinner, got sat at about 8:15, ordered the cornbread and they were out, very disappointing that you're out of a signature app at 8:15 on Friday night. Ordered the shrimp and grits and was told it was a large portion, but it wasn't. It's an avg portion at best. The entree was not hot, it was warm at best. I like my grits to be hot and this item was not. The shrimp were tasty. I was disappointed in the evening and probably won't be returning. read more

Fantastic restaurant. We were able to sit outside. Plan on waiting 30-40 minutes but well worth it. There's a bar and music outside to help the time go by quickly. The service was awesome and for an appetizer we had he siracha chicken pizza which was one of the best wood-oven pizzas I've ever had, seriously. I did the shrimp and grits which was very rich but fantastic. The shrimp was very fresh and had nice flavored of ham and mushrooms. Somebody in our group got the meatloaf, with corn bread on the side. He loved it. We'll come back every market.... read more

Last night was my first time going to Southern Roots and I honestly had never heard of it before until our party mentioned going there. I love farm to table restaurants and I was excited to travel to this well-recommended dining experience. For appetizers we got a half loaf of Rosemary Loaf Bread, Warm Gouda Pimento Cheese with bacon jam, and the Fried Thai NC Shrimp. If you get the Pimento Cheese and like/love bacon, splurge and get the bacon jam. I'm a Pimento Cheese connoisseur and this was TO DIE for. The pita chips were a little hard but you could get over that because the flavor was so good. Our waiter Ben provided amazing service and recommendations! I ordered Lump Crab Stuffed NC Rainbow Trout with Spaghetti Squash Parmesan and Mac& & Cheese. Everything was AMAZING! Especially the Spaghetti Squash Parmesan! The rest of my party also enjoyed their dinner and drinks from the bar. We got dessert and I ordered a slice of the Five-Layered Pound Cake. The reason why someone suggested this restaurant was because during the Christmas season my Dad's girlfriend bought a whole Five-Layered Pound Cake from Southern Roots and I ate the entire thing!!!!! The only downside when going to the restaurant is that the tables are extremely small, especially when they seat you at a small round table with 3-4 people. Super cramped and limited space on the table. Some of my party guests were complaining of the chairs being uncomfortable as well. Overall we had a great dining experience aside from the uncomfortable seating. read more
