Visiting Southern Star is a grand time whether you enjoy beer like the disgraced appellate judge back east, appreciate an episode of "how it is made," or just want to spend time in a nice community space in Conroe with memefriends and/or family. You will likely miss the turn off as the brewery's webpage says to look for a little driveway and yes, it is just that: a smol bean. There is a tiny sign out front marking it as well but that is easy to miss. You follow the little driveway around the wooded bend and then are certain you are in the right place as you come upon the outside bar, ringed by parking spots, and the main building in the compound which is the brewhouse (with brewpub on second story that you climb up the exterior stairs - looking out on the outside bar - to begin the tour inside.) As you enter that brewpub on the second story the bar is to your right, with chalkboard giving you the what for on the day of your visit. You need to go to the opposite end of the brewpub to the gift shop kiosk (bathrooms are right around the corner from the kiosk, still on the second floor before going down those stairs) and that is where you buy your "tickets" for the beers back at the bar, and depending on which price package you choose you either get a free souvenir pint glass or not with your tickets. You are allowed to choose the specific pint glass you get. They are decorated with the logo of a specific beer. The conspiracy theory IPA logo is muy beautiful and so is the beer but I don't want to tell you how to live your best life. On Caturdays there are two tours of the brewery that are free, one leaves at 2pm and the other at 4pm. This is not a brewery tour that gives you samples, so it is structured like St A's. You ARE allowed to bring your beer with you on the tour. The tour guide will even hold up starting the tour for a minute if anyone needs to go freshen up their drink back at the bar. Since people bring their families there are little kids on the tour so you should probably decide how comfortable you are drinking in front of them, since at least this is a brewery and not the little league game at the church field in a dry county. I have been on a lot of brewery tours around the world and this was def in my top three. Our tour guide was supremely knowledgable about all of the equipment, ingredients, and process. You could tell he was really a "beer person" and that was cool he was sharing his passion and excitement with us to introduce us to his brand. We even got the whole story on Le Mort Vivant which was my fave. That style of art, Philippines War through WW-I consequences-of-war aesthetic, on the poster on the ground floor is one of my favorite modern styles - you can hear "Radium Eyes" by Count Zero in the back of your mind filling in and finishing that glorious aesthetic. But Southern Star sold the recipe and someone else makes it now, dang. The tour is not to be missed. You learn plenty of interesting stuff: the building was built up around the giant tanks, not the other way around. And you see that massive load of cans stacked up to ye heavens in the back near the freezer room. The whole thing is fun to explore the growth and increasing market exposure of a great local beer company that has invested in the Conroe community. Bombshell Blonde is their flagship, selling a huge multiplier number above everything else they make. Oktoberfest was my first fave from them, before I learned about conspiracy theory IPA which is a spicy lil lady and handily replaced karbach (trash) hopadillo once karbach sold out to InBev like cowards turning their back on the local community that made them who they are. $12 gets you the souvenir glass and three tickets. A pint in your pimp chalice costs 1 ticket. But I recommend the flight of beers so you can try some rare ones you can't get down at the supermarket beer aisle (and Oporto-West Grey is the only resto I have seen Conspiracy Theory on tap at so far) and it keeps your souvenir glass clean. So, smart like a fox. The flight of beers costs two tickets. So if the memefriend you are with is not a big drinker, or is the designated driver because they are a Prospect for your MC, you can be smart by pairing a $6 (souvenir glass and one ticket) with a $12 package and you get two flights to try nearly everything on the menu. The brewpub portion you drink in on the second floor gets pretty noisy since it is all open space. It is also a community meeting space. The Libertarian Party was hosting a meet and greet last visit. There were a variety of board games along the wall near the kiosk where you buy the tickets/glasses. Also there was pizza being warmed up in the oven near the window overlooking the brewery floor. So, Southern Star wants you to pull up and stay a while with your memefriends and/or family. Which is nice to offer themselves as a community meeting space that also has sweet delicious beer. So many breweries have sprouted up around Houston over the past couple of years, but there are a couple of brands that stand heads and shoulders above. Southern Star Brewing is one of them. Located in Conroe, Southern Star is best known for its bombshell blonde beer. With their place in the market, I was expecting more from the brewery. The brewery is relatively small and is even smaller than competition in its own city such as B-52 Brewing Co. With that being said, the interior is nice. There is plenty of seating, several TVs, a merchandise booth, and some pizza that they heat up for you using a toaster oven. Not the best food options but better than nothing at all. They also have a nice deal, similar to 8th Wonder, where you can get three beers and a commemorative glass for a good price. What's a bummer is that the beer selection is pretty small, we're talking ten beers or so. Other than the bombshell blonde, the vast majority of beers offered when I visited were IPAs and dark beers. These are beers I don't like so my options were pretty limited. What turned things around was the enthusiasm and friendliness of one of their employees. He went above and beyond to make sure we were having a good time and had a killer playlist going. Things like this make a difference. read more

I am trying to contact them and they don't have anyone answewring the phone and the voice mail box is full. I need to know if I need to find a new venue for my June event asap. We enjoyed this brewery. There were two food trucks outside to choose from. One truck appeared to be a regular with menus upstairs that had American food and then a Maine Lobster truck. There was plenty of seating with a football game playing and a live band. The beer is priced perfectly at $4 a pint. This is an excellent brewery in little 'ol Conroe! The brewery sits back a few blocks off Hwy 75 just a little south of League Line. Down a slightly winding road nestled in the woods is a beautiful brewery building. You'll notice just before that is an open field. Both places you can sit and have a beer. The taproom is upstairs inside the brewery. There is plenty of seats and some TVs. The bar outside is located in a small hut and there are a lot of seats outside as well. There are games outside to play, or bring your own. It is family friendly, and there are usually food options from local food trucks that come out to serve. You can take a tour of the brewery. The guys are friendly and funny. Customer service there is always top notch. They are always serving great beer in a fun atmosphere. You should drop by sometime. You won't regret it. read more

Nice hidden bar in Conroe . They were playing 80's music when we got there morissey, Tracy Chapman etc . Loved it !! Then they changed the music to today's hits so not bad . I tried several of their IPA 's and they were pretty good . My sister doesn't drink beer but they had a strawberry flavored beer that she actually liked . The bar staff was super friendly . They also had a lady that cooked beef & chicken taquitos that was pretty good . She also sells nachos , quesadillas. They have checkers on the table you can play . We thought that was fun . This is a great little hide-a-way tucked off the I-45. The facility has indoor and outdoor spaces. So, I'm the hot sun, you can cool off upstairs tap room in the comfort of A/C. They have a bunch of games and local vendors with products for sale. When it's cool outside, you can enjoy the outdoor activities which includes the occasional bands on the weekends. Great local brewery with some amazingly tasty beers. This place is located on the north side of Conroe at the back of what looks like some residential property in the front...it kinda feels like you're at someone's house, and oh by the way, we have a brewery in our back yard...but in an awesome sort of way. Huge "biergarten" with ample tables and even some fire pits here and there. Outdoor tap set up, but this isn't always open. They do have several monthly events - farmer's market, etc that they use the space for. Upstairs and inside is the taproom...super nice, super clean and all the folks are super friendly. Basically, for $10 you can get a logo pint glass and three beers. They also do flights, and while they have their regulars on tap (bombshell, buried hatchet, pine belt etc), they also have some seasonals and rotators on tap, so check em out! read more

Great brewery in Conroe! The google maps directions didn't take us to the exact location but watch out for the Southern Star sign and you'll be heading the right direction. The place is pretty big! There is a sizeable outdoor area with games such as cornhole. The outdoor area is dog friendly and has a dedicated bar. The indoor facilities are really nice, there are large picnic tables - good for groups. The beer itself is great! They have a good selection of 8-10 on draft, some are seasonals or specials. I tried the Bombshell Blonde, Sunday Brunch, and the Russian Imperial Stout. All of them were good! The bartenders were also friendly and helpful, allowed us to have a sample before ordering. You can bring in your own food or snacks here which is great. Although even if you don't bring food, it seems like there is usually a food truck around. Overall, great place to spend a few hours in Conroe. read more

This place is a must in Montgomery County. Incredible beer tastings and food trucks are always a great combo. Picnic table seating in the upstairs so get there early and/or be willing to share a table. There's isn't a ton to do in Conroe. You will enjoy this place as long as a few things can happen. They have a varied menu of drinks, not as much creativity as some of the other local microbreweries, but their quality seems to compensate for that. That is not to say they aren't creative, they have some excellent options. If it is hot outside, try their indoor tap room. Their aren't as many trees out for cover. Try it out! read more

Ok, so I get that this is Dan Patrick/Trump country and that COVID does not cross the Montgomery County line. That said, the taproom could pretend it cares. There is a "Mask Up" sign on the door, drawn on construction paper by one of the employees' kids. When I entered, one of the two employees was wearing a mask. The maskless one hit the men's room same time as me. Did not wash up. Turns out he's the bartender. I left. Note: SSB sells beer via tickets. I loved coming to this brewery. The beer was great, the staff was super friendly, and the atmosphere was excellent and I'll definitely be back. The one star deduction comes from the food setup they had in the parking lot. They were selling burgers, brats, and hot dogs. The food was ok and very overpriced. $8 for an over cooked burger and $6 for onion rings that were fried for about an hour. I'd highly recommend coming here for the brewery, but either eat before or after. Don't waste your money on the street vendor selling the carney food. read more

Pretty decent beer. We got the conspiracy theory ipa, the nitro stout, and the pale ale. We also sampled the rest of the beer but none were really that good in our opinion. The conspiracy theory and pale ale were good for the summer. Both were nice and light, and the ipa wasn't that bitter like a lot of others. The stout was a favorite. It was a lighter stout but it had a nice cocoa favor. They also had pizza that actually was decent. Tasted fresh, and had a cruchy crust. We sat outside bc we had a dog with us. It was ok though bc they had a big fan going. It only really blew at one of the benches, so if you're planning on coming here and need to sit outside, I would recommend coming early and getting that bench. read more

Decent selection of beer (about 10 taps) with a great air conditioned tap room. The rates are: $12 for pint glass + 3 beer tickets; $6 for pint glass + 1 beer ticket, or $4 per beer ticket. There are also flights available for 2 beer tickets. Brewery Tours are available at 2pm and 4pm on Saturdays and it is $10 per person for a tour, pint glass, and 3 beer tickets. There is plenty of seating available indoors and there is a large outdoor area. The area is very well kept and has a welcoming ambiance. There is also pizza available in the tap room. Overall, this is a great place to hang out with friends on a nice day, or a hot day. Southern Star is open Thursday- Friday 4-10pm, Saturday 12-10pm, and Sunday 12-6pm. One word of advice, if it's your first time visiting, spotting the entrance of the drive way to the property is easy to miss, so keep a good eye out for a 'Southern Star' sign with a bombshell blonde can image on N Frazier St. I visited last week and for some reason my Google Maps was taking me down the side of the property (League Line Rd) where there isn't an entrance.
