I watched Cara clean everything so thoroughly while I was being tattooed, and well as they kept the doors looked to prevent additional people from coming in. The studio is large, but there were minimal people and everyone was following proper procedures. No one should come to this tattoo shop. They are incredibly uncaring and unprofessional. Not only did Josh completely scar and mutilate my arm with how heavy and aggressive he was while Tattooing my arm. But when I reached out regarding my concern, they told me this is "nothing we could have prevented or planned for". My own dermatologist used the word mutilated when they checked my skin stating that this is not only preventable but was caused because Josh was so aggressive while tattooing me. They tried to gaslight me into thinking that this just "happens". If you are black or have a darker complexion DO NOT come here. They have NO idea how to tattoo on darker skin. I recently went in to get a smallish black symbol on my forearm. First off, the guys there were pretty much complete a-holes. If you delayed them in any sense (eg discussing how large you wanted the tat, browsing at other designs) they immediately started heckling you. I even think they had a sign that said something along the lines of (if you're here to think about it, you shouldn't be here at all). Second off, they guy who completed my design was MUCH too heavy handed on it. It's been scanning horribly these last two weeks and already looks faded. I'll have to get it retouched when it's completely healed which sucks. This is not my first tattoo so I recognize the difference between normal scabbing and flaking and whatever the hell this guy did to my arm. Proceed with Caution: I will begin with my experience from the moment I walked in the door. I WASN'T greeted by an unfriendly fellow (that i can only assume is the receptionist) that never even welcomed me to the shop, I only got " what do you want?" The Artist that did my tattoo took on a job that he wasn't skilled enough to do. He wanted to squeeze me in for and extra 250 dollar job before his next client came in. He rushed through a half arm piece and was done in under an hour. I came in with an unfinished tattoo that needed to be colored in. I showed him a inspiration picture of the colors I wanted. This picture including.. pinks, yellows, oranges, bright blues, purples and green. He must be color blind because there are no pinks, oranges, purples to be seen. He already had his color pallet picked out and waiting when i sat down, and never added any of the colors I was insistent on having. My feather tattoo now looks like ivy spewing blood growing up my arm. I've never in my life been unhappy with a tattoo. I emailed the artist a few hours later and asked him if there was anything we could do because the colors i wanted weren't in the tattoo at all. He replied to me, that he "DID WHAT HE KNOWS," and "IF I WANT ANYTHING ELSE DONE I WOULD HAVE TO PAY." PAY? I just paid you $250 bucks for something I'm COMPLETELY unhappy with. Don't forget the tip of 50 bucks, only because I work in a similar industry where I take care of clients. I would never tell a client those things, this is just bad business. I thought, well, maybe the artist isn't a business person, so i contacted the owner Chris Howell of Southern Star in hopes that they would hear my plea and be willing to work with me. Boy, I was wrong. I sent him the emails that Alan no so graciously sent me back. Only to receive an even worse email. I really wonder how the customer service aspects works in their business model. This is something permanently on my body. My only complaint is that I never got what I wanted as far as the coloring of the tattoo goes and their unprofessional attitudes. read more

I would not recommend this place to anyone. Try ANY tattoo spot in Atlanta except for this one. This place has deceptive written all over it. Customer service is absolutely horrendous, the dude who answers the calls (Possibly the guy that's sitting behind the desk when you go in) is a liar. He quoted me two different prices for the same work on two different days, and wanted to overcharge me for a simple work. I knew I was being overcharged because I've got quotes from other places far less than this spot. You supposedly have to make an "Appointment", which I did over the phone, and when I came in to get my ink done, it was supposedly "Walk-Ins Only", talk about some BULLSHIT. This place is the epitome of sketchy con-artists. Check out Timeless Tattoo's on Cheshire Bridge or any other tattoo spot as a matter of fact, I've never had such a horrible customer service experience like this place in my life. read more

It starts at the guy sitting at the desk to the guy actually doing the tattoo.Then this is the place for you. They will take your money and do Sh*ty work. My husband and I walked into the establishment and was greeted with nothing but rudeness. I wanted a simple tattoo with red ink he wanted a barcode with our kids birthdays in it. There was NO help what so ever, They didnt evrn show us thier artistic skills. I got my second tattoo courtesy of Bill Conner at Southern Star Tattoo on 10/1/11. I was very impressed with how clean the place was and how great everyone I encountered was. All very friendly and personable. I liked that Bill would actually talk to me during the process, unlike my first tattoo experience where my artist (different shop) didn't seem too keen on being friendly, especially to a first timer. If I ever decide to get another tattoo, I'll return to Southern Star. read more

Update with the healing part is by far the worst healing I've had out of all my 15 tattoos when i was getting it done i was wondering why it hurt more then usual. It was because he went 2 deep in 2 spots on my tattoo which looks horrible but my husband tatt is awesome and it's his first tatt an i been taking care of he's and mine an he's looking better . so this past saturday i went into Liberty tattoo to get a cover up and walked in at noon and talked to 2 ladies that worked in the shop. i told them what i wanted and they told me to come back on tuesday BC she would have to think about it draw it out and think about it REALLY So i left and went to southern star. walked in the guy with the cross on his face asked if he could help me i told him what i wanted emailed him a photo of what i was looking for. Then Brian came out showed me what he had sketched out it was SPOT ON better then the photo i emailed to them 100% better So Brian outlined it out on my arm and this saturday we are doing colors. Had my first piece done here last weekend by Keet. I would classify myself as not the typical customer--suburban dad in mid-30s getting my kids/wife put on my upper arm. What a great experience. I had a basic idea of what I wanted and brought in a sketch with a space theme (my kids love it). Keet took all the basic elements I wanted, but added the creative/artisic flair that was missing. His final work was better than I could have hoped for. He took the time to make sure we discussed/agreed on the design and direction, and was really collaborative. I work everyday with "creatives" at an ad agency, and sometimes butt heads on the process to get things right. Keet had the balance completely right--wanted to give the customer what I wanted, but used his expertise and experience to make the design read well and looks great. The shop experience was also fantastic. I had my doubts about whether a dad from 'burbs would get laughed out of the building, but everyone was very laid back and down to earth--nobody smirking or too cool for school. Artists and customers alike just interested in seeing/doing good, artistic work. This will most likely be my only tattoo and don't have any other basis for comparison, but can't image a better experience. read more

Went here to get my first tattoo. At first, I was a bit turned off to getting one here, because I just inquired via email about making an appointment and they were kind of rude as a reply - really unprofessional. We went in, he said there would be about a 20-30 minute wait, so we went to the Bookhouse Pub to wait it out. We went back, and I showed the design to the guy. He went to make a tracing, and asked about how I wanted the style to look. He proposed that I do a negative space version of it instead, which I was really excited about since I love tattoos that use negative space. Before he started, he noted that for a sternum tattoo, you have to be absolutely still so that the outline doesn't get messed up. I tensed my entire body for the entire thing. I only cursed a few times during the session, and it was overall very pleasant. I'm pretty pleased with the tattoo, except the top jewel is slightly crooked, but you don't really notice unless you're up close. It's still slightly disappointing, though. I thought the tattoo artist who worked on my tattoo was very professional and did a great overall job - I know he said his name at the end of the session but I have a really bad auditory memory - I remember that he had a trucker hat, long-ish hair and hipster glasses (sorry!) Anyway, I'd highly consider coming back here to get my next tat! read more

My friend and I went to get a tattoo last night. Honestly was aiming for the tattoo place across the street but apparently we didn't notice until afterwards. They did a good job on the tattoo for us both, but the energy there was not friendly. They seemed annoyed with us, and although we had had a few drinks, we were just having fun and getting a tattoo. I was very disappointed with everyone's negativity and lack of conversation. It was just "here, money, bye"... but luckily we made our own enjoyment out of the night. Didn't expect to have it done the same day but the artist Felipe specializes in old school tattoos. l was more than satisfied with my tattoo! it came out just how I wanted it. If you are a fan of old school tattoos then Southern Star is the place to go! You pay for what you get and believe me I was blown away with how low the price was for the detail and fine line work. Went here to twice to get a matching his and hers tattoo. The first tattoo is a disaster. It's still swollen as I'm typing this review. I have over thirty tattoos so I know how a tattoo is suppose to feel and look like a couple days after. This tattoo in particular has my whole ankle and the bottom part of my leg looking like it's about to pop!!!! I can't stand on my foot at all!!!!! And they're over priced!!! When I pay for a tattoo I go BIG!!!! They charged a hundred bucks for a heart missing a puzzle piece which looks like shi*. And the tattoo is small!!!! My fiance and I went back for another matching his and hers but different artists did our's this time. That particular piece is healing fine. But again I must say they are high. Liberty tattoo which is across the street said they would do the matching set for one fifty a piece. The only reason we didn't go there is because they were on their last two customers. I've been to Liberty several times and loved their work. Should've just went to them the next day as we had planned. I will never let that particular artist from Southern tattoo ink me again. read more

I had a great and little frustrating experience with this location. I got 2 pieces done the same day as a walk in client (went to 2 places before coming here that couldn't take me on a walk in basis ). I wanted a tribute piece for Prince (his guitar, the old one not the cloud guitar) and a set of coordinates. I gave them my picture of "Prince's" guitar and I think they went and pulled up another picture of a similar guitar, BUT IT IS NOT PRINCES' GUITAR! They showed me the stencil, I approved it for all intents and purposes, it looked like the guitar I wanted, but what's on paper doesn't always transfer to what you actually get when its finished. My guitar looks GREAT, but after seeing it finished I began to notice, "hey, why is this here?" (I got the piece on the back of my arm so couldn't see the work being done easily). The guitar should have been less "busy" on the main part of it, but it does have "extra" shading (I think they call it) and is NOT what the picture I had provided..still looks good though. My second piece was simple coordinates and I feel this one was kinda botched. Numbers unevenly spaced and not lined up level, now I'm stuck with an uneven tattoo and this one hurts the most to look at (for me)... They quoted me $350 for both, then it was time to pay, he says $360, which I chalked up to the game so I looked at it as his tip, paid the $360 and went on my way. I'm not bashing this place or the artist, by no means, just some things that happened on my first ever visit to Southern Star tattoo. read more

Damien has the worst attitude I've ever experienced in a tattoo shop. I told my sister to not let him tat her because I was rudely told to turn down my FaceTime call while they turned up & blasted heavy metal. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS TERRIBLE!! She decided to get the tattoo because he did draw it up nice. Tattoo was done well but couldn't be finished bc of his horrible aura & heavy hand!! This place doesn't deserve one star. My sister and I just left the shop in the middle of her tattoo on her neck UNFINISHED! While she was getting tattooed he didn't try to comfort her at all or even crack a smile, only rolled his eyes when she complained of the pain. He was rude and unprofessional. Anytime she tried to stop to take a break he acted like he was in a rush to get it done which is extremely unfair && went on to say how crazy she was going to look tomorrow at work with her unfinished tattoo.
