I have taken both my dogs here for the past 10 years. This visit was however very unpleasant. Dr. Burch was incredibly rude to me when I was talking to her about why I only wanted to give my dog a rabies shot & not all the rest of them. She kept trying to pressure me into expensive services my dog really didn't need. Then she accused me of talking about politics when I was talking about health care. She seemed to be "triggered" about the shot subject. Needless to say... we will be taking our dog to somewhere else from here on out. read more

I've been taking my 15 year old pup here for about 4 years now. I couldn't ask for a better vet office to take him to. From the front desk to the techs to the veterinarians and everyone involved- they are extremely kind and empathetic. It's very difficult watching my dog get older but it comforts me to know he has such knowledgeable and compassionate vets taking care of him. I have taken him to each Dr at some point over the years and they are all wonderful. When he has had to go under anesthesia, they have texted me updates and pics as if my dog is texting me :). Been coming here for years no issues. Great staff and really kind. Recently brought my elderly cat (20+) in to get a new vaccine. I know there are risks with new medications but i wasnt expecting the call i recieved from my fiance crying an hour and a half later. The vet called and told her "they gave her way to much medicine and needed be at the er in 12 hours to survive". Now this is were i begin to change my attitude. Giving a cat 0.6 isntead of 0.06 of a vaccine is insane. The only thing we get is a sorry and a paid vet bill. Now my fiance and i are sitting here on a work night in an er with our elderly cat who was heart murmur and kidney diesease wondering if she will survive. Watching as she is given blood transfusion due to complications and how scared she is being poked and prodded . She has no idea whats happening and i feel awful for her. If southern vet doesnt do the deed the from this stress might. This is a part of my family and will impact my life more than anyone on here knows. If they can make an easy mistake like getting an incorrect number on your bottle and it have such grave consequences I would take your family members somewhere else. read more

Dont know why Yelp is showing me in NY but I am in Smyrna TN I have used this vet for almost 30 years and have loved it Always compassionate. Well all that is over. They have changed hands and have gone corporate. I have just had the most tramatic experience of my life. I had a Very Sick kitty. Long story short, I could not afford the surgery that he needed so I had to sign him over to them. They went ahead and did the surgery and will give him to someone else in the office. I did not understand why they would not give him to me. I was not looking forward to putting him down, so in that respect, I am glad he had a chance, but why couldn't it have been for me and not for someone else. I am on a fixed income. read more

This place is not to be trusted with your beloved pets!! They have caused our family so much emotional and financial distress! STAY AWAY!!! Without going thru months of info here goes: My healthy 10-12 yr old Shihtzu hurt his leg. Took him in was told it was a torn ACL and would require surgery or if we give time to heal and see altho if he damaged the other leg he would be mamed . With news like we decided to wait to see if the leg would heal and then returned after few weeks with little improvement. The vet recommended surgery and the cost was extremely high above 4000.00. After few weeks of saving and getting donations from family and friends we took him for his preop testing which they keep him all day to meet with surgical team and vet. He was given the all clear for surgery. Two days after we had to rush him in as he couldnt breathe and was struggling. We were then told we would need to transport to Veterinary ER 20-30 mins away as he was in heart failure and had a lung infection. What a shock!! Heart issues? Lung infection/pnuemonia?? How ? Well we later found out that he either had the heart issue prior and if so should never have had surgery or caused while in surgery by giving too much fluids. We tried for two more weeks with medications to no avail and then he got so bad he had cardiac induced seizure's that would not stop and his heart enlarged. The end was imminent. Our hearts broken! Please stop these people from causing so much distress and anguish! They didnt care at all and never once did they call to check on him while all this was happening and they absolutely knew it!!! Heartless Veterinary place!!!!!! Im sure they will have this review removed but im trying to save others from this pain. Please contact me directly for any questions. read more

Dr Burch is the best cat vet. We have taken several very ill cats there. When we took our one cat to the emergency vet in Murfreesboro with no diagnosis and a poor X-ray that couldn't even be read we took im him to southern vet. He was seen immediately and they did an X-ray and changed the schedule immediately to do emergency surgery. The surgeon was excellent. I will not take my cats elsewhere. I can give more stories of excellent care. I had a specialist tell me that dr Burch at southern vet did everything that the specialist would have done. read more

on july 19th, i arrived in tennessee (due to relocation) and researched veterinary clinics that could proceed with the treatment that my former vet recommended for my registered emotional support animal (english bulldog). i found southern veterinary center online via google reviews. they said they have qualified veterinary surgeons that could perform the stone removal of cysteine bladder stones. they confirmed and i scheduled an appointment for the following week, wanting to waste no time. july 25th, 2024 laura merchan, dmv was provided the information from my former vet to do the ultrasound and dr. merchan confirmed cysteine stone were present in the bladder. cysteine stones do not dissolve and would need to be surgically removed immediately to prevent a medical emergency. my esa would also need to be neutered by dr. merchan to prevent stones from forming again. dr. merchan stated she wanted to wait and completely disregard my former vet's medical advice to do the surgery immediately to prevent urinary obstruction resulting in a medical emergency (his bladder could potentially explode). this is when my confidence began to diminish in dr. merchan's ability to have the best intent. august 8th, 2024 (two weeks later), i brought my esa back to see dr. merchan. dr. merchan then scheduled surgery for the stone removal and the neutering for august 27th, 33 days after my esa's first visit with her. in the 33 days my esa health reverted and got worse and back to the terrible state he was in with his stones before he was diagnosed. the exact medical concern that my former vet stated was possible - happened. my esa experienced urinary obstruction. this resulted in me having to pick my esa up from the clinic with in minutes from dr. merchan neutering my esa and having to transfer him myself while he was under sedation to the emergency room at a different facility that was 30 a minute drive away. my esa spent 2 nights in the icu and over $7,000 in medical bills. my esa's bladder could have exploded resulting in lost of his life. not to mention it put us both in an immense amount of mental and emotional stress. dr. merchan is an inexperienced, dmv, with absolutely horrible judgment, is controlling and fear mongering, and a terrible communicator. i tried to reschedule my esa's surgery for august 28th under a different surgeon but she insisted on performing the surgery and moving to the 27th so she could perform the surgery. if you love your pet please avoid at all cost. this clinic is not experience to handle this type of procedure. she takes the fear approach when people are already under stress trying to care for their animals. read more

To clarify my earlier post and respond to Southern Veterinary reply. We did not know that our poodle was suffering from pancreatitis. We only knew that she was very sick. Southern vet refused to see her. We had to go to another vet in LaVergne to find out what was wrong with her. He squeezed us in even though he had never been our vet before. Since Southern Vet has been taking care of our dogs since 1993, we expected some courtesy. read more

I've lived in Smyrna 25 years. This is the only good Vet in town. Here's the bottom line... I could care less how fancy a vet office is, and I don't care about a receptionists' social skills. ALL I care about is the competency of the medical staff. This office has amazing female doctors. They're dedicated, inquisitive to find the problem with your sick animal, and you always get the feeling your pet is their world back in the exam office. I've taken several animals, 2 cats and 2 toy breed dogs over a period of 13 years. They've saved my dogs' lives more than once. I'd never go anywhere else. read more

So this past week, my Chihuahua had bad diarrhea with some vomiting. The bland diet and pepto at home did not work. After 5 days of this, not wanting to wait till Monday, I called them. We were really getting worried, as she had been diagnosed with Cushings disease. They had no room, but did not want for her to have to wait till Monday either. They not only squeezed her in, but took us right into a room without having to wait. Poor thing even had a temp. After blood work and meds the price was pretty expensive 325.00, but it worked. My husband said she had the Poochycron Variant. They even called back on Monday to find out if she was better. Vets these days are expensive, but if you have a pet you have to have a vet. It is what it is. I am just glad to have found one that cares. The service and staff here are amazing. read more

I just moved here from NC and decided to give Mia a shot grooming my two cocker spaniels. She does grooming upstairs of the vet office. I don't like the cocker cut but prefer Mohawk cuts and she had never done it before on dogs, but did an exceptional job as well as trimmed their heads/ears and still trimmed down the Mohawk like I asked. Price was very reasonable! My pups are up to date with other care, but the office is very friendly and I plan to come back for any vet care needs at the same place! read more

Other greyhound owners have referred us to this office. They really know greyhounds. We have always been treated well, prices are customary, and we have full faith in their diagnoses.They give full explanations of diagnosis, treatment options and provide great input on daily pet care. On one occasion, there was a possibility of dental extractions. After the x-rays and cleaning, all was well. I get the feeling they truly love pets. Everyone in the office loves pets and loves to heal them. They do excellent with our drama queen who is also a big scaredey greyhound. read more

This place is great with the care of our dogs. Love the strong cast of lady-vets. However, every single time I'm there, without fail, I will stand at the desk for 10-15 minutes before being waited on while approximately four employees mill about behind the desk and ignore. No "give me a second." no "we'll be right with you." They aren't all putting out emergency fires. We're just ignored. When they get around to acknowledging you, they are polite and nice. But you will wait. And with three dogs, and my mother's fluctuating strength due to various health concerns, this is irritating. Their next check-up is in August, so she can't even take the pups to the car before waiting her required 15 Minutes of Being Ignored after the visit is over. This is definitely an area that could use improvement. read more

So my two dogs got in a fight last night and this time Spicebear got the worst end of the deal. So I went to take her to the vet this morning at Southern Veterinarian clinic in Smyrna and they refuse to take care of my dog because of something that happen back in 2001 with one of my other dogs. They said I was on the don't give service alert. Why would you not treat a dog that is injured? I will NEVER or RECOMMEND this place every. They are rude uncaring for animals all they care about is quick easy money and don't give a shit about you or you pets. I will tell everyone how they treated me and my dog. I've been bringing my baby Nikko here to Dr. Barb since we moved to Nashville over 10 years ago! If it doesn't speak highly enough for them that I've moved from Antioch to Hermitage to Hendersonville and still kept coming here, I don't know what does. I have been going to Southern Vet since I moved to Smyrna in 2005. They were awesome in the beginning with all my babies I had never considered going any where else even when friends suggest I go to their vet. It is a loyalty thing for me, I stick by my vets through thick and thin. Recently I had to take one of my babies in for an issue, they would take him back and look over him and then bring him back to the room. In the beginning they would examine them in the room but I noticed over the last few years they take them back and examine them. Any way over the last couple of months my baby has been going through some things and they put him on medications. He has gone through a couple of antibiotics already and the latest time which was a couple of months from the first time of the problem they put him on a stronger medicine for fourteen days. He started having trouble breathing so I took him to another vet and they said he had a heart murmur, so they did an xray and found he had an enlarged heart and fluid build up so much so that it was causing him to have trouble breathing and was coughing. They asked if my vet had already told me that he had a heart murmur to much of our surprise Southern Vet had never told us this. They also stated that the antibiotic they gave him for the problem was not enough that he needed to be on the medication for a month. Now he is not only on medication for the problem but he is on heart medicine for life something that may have been prevented years ago. I am so broken hearted that I trusted them with my baby, I thought they were getting the best care ever. It takes a lot to hurt me and this really did. I have cried along with my family because of this situation. If you choose them and you like them but at one point you question something they might say about your fur baby don't hesitate like I did at first go ahead and get that second opinion. read more

After the advice of my niece, I had to write this review. A few years ago we lost our beloved Daisy. She was a 15 year old Corgi. She was a part of our family and we all loved her very much. A few months before her death she suffered through an attack by another dog. The other dog had ripped her side open. It was early mourning so we rushed her to Southern Veterinary Center were we had used their services for shots and general care. We arrived at the facility around 7.00 am waiting for someone to show up. My husband and I were both covered in blood from Daisies injuries. We spotted an office person or nurse(not sure), my husband approached her and informed her of our Daisy's injuries. They made us wait in the parking lot until they opened their doors at 7:30 knowing my Daisy was severely injured. They would not treat her until finances were discussed, my Daisy was bleeding, suffering and more importantly in pain. She required 14 staples in her side. They obviously have no true love for the animals they care for. My Daisy should not have had to wait in the parking lot for 30 minutes until official opening time when there was clearly people there. They have no true compassion for the animals they care for. Its about the $$$$$ read more

We just recently took our 1 1/2 year Yorkie there for boarding for about 5 days. I was already super nervous leaving him there as it was my first time being away from him. I picked him up as soon as they opened Wednesday morning and he smelled like pee and when I got home, I noticed he had poop all over his butt region that was dried up so I had to cut it all off. The next morning he began throwing up and it continued all day. He could not eat or keep any water down and he was severely lethargic. Me and my husband took him to a 24 hour vet care because we were so worried. He had to get some fluid shots in him due to severe dehydration and we have to keep him on a boiled chicken and rice diet for a week due to it. We will not be returning to this place ever again. Our experience has been horrible with them. We will not be returning and will make sure any friends and family stay away as well. Horrible! read more
