My brother in law took us here for lunch. The service was great so tipped good. We loved the ambiance and old western decor. I had the chicken fried steak which was cooked right and flavorful. Good spot for a quick bbq lunch! I think this place has been here for over 50 years, so it's very cool to see the interior decorations and all the photos. Growing up I used to come here all the time. The place has always had good chicken fried steak. Haven't been in a few years and sadly they are now infested with flies. I had to fight off flies the entire time. One landed in my drink so I had to go ask for a to go cup with a lid. They really need to close their doors until they get the fly infestation under control. I did leave 2 stars because the chicken fried steak is still really good, but it is very unappetizing to have to swat away flies the entire time. Sadly I don't think I will be back. read more

What a great find. I was in town for business recently and several people locally kept recommending this place for great barbecue. It definitely was amazing. I guess they are known for their chicken fried steak.. and full disclosure if I ever see that menu, I'm always gonna get it. The problem with getting chicken fried steak usually is once it gets hit with the gravy. It becomes kind of soggy.. I was pleasantly surprised that this was not the case here every bite it was as crispy as the first it was perfectly cooked.. The food came out amazingly quick for to go order and the person working there was extremely friendly.. It's definitely kind of a hole in the wall place decorated like it's straight out of frontier land in Disney World. I'll be back for sure. Next time I'm in the area. read more

Complete lack of seasoning on breaded meat, the gravy is so lackluster. Visited for lunch with a group of 7. Easy to seat as there always picnic table style seating and we were able to push two tables together. I had the 2 meat plate with moist brisket and ribs. The brisket was tender with a hint of smoke. The ribs were huge and also very tender with a nice light rub. Don't expect deep smoked meat. My sides were mashed potatoes and green beans. WOW! the sides got my attention good. I brought 1 rib home there was so much food. My wife had the CFS and it was pretty good for the Houston. I tried the brisket here and was pretty disappointed, it lacked seasoning and just didn't hit the mark. The mac and cheese was also underwhelming, very bland with little to no flavor. Customer service was forgettable; I don't recall anyone checking on our table during the meal. The ambiance is distinctive and fits the Southern/country theme you'd expect from a place called Hickory Hollow, but the interior didn't feel especially clean. It was tender and the breading was good, but the gravy didn't hit like I wanted it to. The brisket is a hard pass. It needed the sauce or gravy (almost pot roasty). I ordered a burger and mac and cheese my friend got the chicken with 2 sides. Burger ok, well done bun was a little hard but Mac and cheese ew. The biggest problem for me was the staff. There was a man cleaning tables, but never sprayed them and uses the same towel for all tables. He also looked like he hated his job. We made the venture up north, apparently they use to have a closer location that has since closed in the Heights, on a Saturday afternoon. Was actually surprised to see how many people were eating at like 4pm on a Saturday. We ordered the large chicken fried steak, cause go big or go home, and the full order of the rack of ribs. Both come with 2 sides. This place is like a BBQ joint, you order at the counter and they give you a buzzer - once your food is ready, you pick it up at the window and find your own seats. Well, the food is so large, they serve it on pizza trays!!! The chicken fried steak was ok - crispy but overly battered. Some say that's the best part, though the "steak" inside is super thin and some parts barely had any. So looks could definitely be deceiving because it looked large but there wasn't much substance inside to fill you up. Bf actually ended up eating most of the whole thing. The batter was seasoned well - but the gravy was definitely what made all the flavors. The hot tots were good - though I would've liked to see them a bit crispier and less mushy inside? Mashed potatoes were as expected and mac n cheese was just meh... The ribs were decently tender but had zero flavors and I actually hated the BBQ sauce - tasted like store bought out of the bottle steak sauce mixed with BBQ sauce or something.
