Southgate Grill sits in a location that has been haunted by terrible restaurants in the past. However, don't let that make you stay away. Southgate Grill is completely different and really is a nice place to grab something to eat in a casual setting in the Pines, There is a lot of light at any of the tables during the day and before the sunset (of course)! The servers are very friendly and service is fast. Lots of great options on the menu, including build your own burger, or build your own salads! I really enjoy the build your own salad option with blackened chicken. The salad is huge and the chicken is still warm, nice and spicy sitting on top of the salad and vegetables you have chosen for your lunch or dinner. Definitely just what the Pines needed! read more

Hostess told us to order takeout at the bar. So I sat at the bar and was looking at the menu. When bartender asked me what I wanted to drink, I told her I was ordering food to go. She then said well I am going to go take drink orders first, before your order- I'll be back. I said OK- I waited and then she came back and said if you're not drinking, you have to go stand down at the corner of the bar and order from there and not take up a barstool. It sits right on the man made lake and there is even outdoor seating and a outdoor covered bar. We came here for lunch and I had the hamburger and chips. Yum! This was one of the worst restaurant experiences I've had. My friend ordered the steak sandwich and it came out with a full ribeye that hadn't been cut and was way over cooked. My back street sandwich came on a croissant but it was a bite sized pastry that couldn't contain nearly all of the sandwich. Both of my other friends ordered a burger medium-rare and it came well done and completely dry. Overall, I would never recommend this place unless you enjoy waiting an hour to get a plate of horrible food that was thrown together by a poorly operated kitchen. After ordering soft drinks and sitting for 15 minutes, Forget it. Told the older lady rolling silver that we were leaving, couldn't get drinks. She didn't say a word, just walked away. On our way out, my wife said there's our server. She was entertaining the people playing trivia in the bar area. Still didn't have our drinks! I cannot wait for the new place to open in the old Pizza Hut location. Unless you sit at the bar, don't go. Service has never been very good. This place is great if you are in the area and craving some basic American eats! When we saw that the awful Mexican restaurant was gone and was being replaced we had to come by and give it a try. Portions are generous, prices are very fair (especially for a beach community that tends to jack up prices at many of their local restaurants), service is friendly, and most importantly the food is good. My favorite thing about their menu is they have a build your own salad, burger, or sandwich option in addition to the signature dishes already listed. We will definitely be back! Side note: they haven't officially opened yet so if you come by please keep in mind that they are currently training new employees and working out kinks in their kitchen so expect to wait a bit to be seated & for your drinks/food. I have been to the Southgate Grill 9-10 times since they've opened. I have always enjoyed the atmosphere and delicious food. We visited Labor Day weekend and had one of the worst dining experiences of my life. We ordered the special for the night "tuna". It came out and tasted like fish flavored cardboard. We were so disappointed... the waiter never came to ask how the food was. After everyone else was done eating we made mentioned how terrible the fish was. We ate less than half of the fish and didn't want to make a big deal about it. We were informed that they would do something about it for us. When the check came out to us not only didn't they do anything for us they charged me for a side salad. I asked why there was an up charge and got oh sorry I should of mentioned that salads are an up charge for a side. I was so irritated by the lack of care/compassion the manager never came to talk to us. Most of the people in our party were local residents and regulars at the restaurant. I hope things swing back in a positive direction we hate going in town to eat out and love going to locally owned establishments. BTW I never expected anything for free and would have been happy to pay... but just come out and make your clients feel appreciated. Sorry to complain! read more

We had to ask for Old Bay because it was pretty flavorless, especially the shrimp. I sprinkled the seasoning on top, and mixed it into the sour cream. After I did that, it was really, really tasty. I went for a walk around South gate pond and came across this restaurant nearby called South Gate grill. Zayna and Lauren served me on the outside bar, which is on the water, and gave me exceptional service. Also, I ordered a blt salad and a make your own burger, which both of them were incredible! My family loved this place. The menu was not humongous but what they offered was enough to make all 7 of my family happy. The prices were the best that I have seen in all of Ocean Pines. The service was amazing and the location was extremely clean. I myself ordered a corned beef ham and swiss cheese sandwich on pumpernickel with potato chips and it only came to $6. My sandwich was loaded with meat and cheese and I can't wait to go back to this place. There is no kids menu but for the prices of their meals , your kids can order a regular meal for almost the same price as an adult. I would highly recommend this establishment to anybody whether you are looking for a dinner for two or a dinner for your family. I loved it and can't wait to go back. The place is very well located in the shopping center, but limited parking due to other businesses. "Off their game" - if I had to describe Southgate in three words, those would work! I was looking forward to trying this venue for the first time. The layout and offerings on their menu was appealing, and the prices seemed extremely reasonable. Before I describe my actual visit, I will preface my rating with the following: it was a Thursday evening in mid-July on a VERY hot day. Our visit was around 6:30pm... there was a considerable wait for a table, so thankfully the bar had 2 open spots. The bartender, while friendly, clearly was overwhelmed. He definitely needed a bar-back to assist him with washing glasses. He took our order quickly, but we easily waited almost 10 minutes before our beers arrived. While we had his attention, we ordered two apps: wings and cheese fries. The wings were decent, but the fries were very salty: covered with fake, liquid cheese, bacon bits, and scallions. I was tempted to try a salad, and after seeing other salads being delivered with far too much dressing, I opted for the taco salad. There was NO imagination to it: a bed of iceberg lettuce with chili over it, shredded cheddar cheese, tomatoes, and about 12 small, round tortilla chips placed around the plate's edge. It was lackluster at best. I would recommend this place to those just looking for a quick, casual bar visit that includes beers and simple appetizers. Their dinner menu is very simple, so if you're okay with that, you'll have an "okay" time. read more
