"Off their game" - if I had to describe Southgate in three words, those would work! I was looking forward to trying this venue for the first time. The layout and offerings on their menu was appealing, and the prices seemed extremely reasonable. Before I describe my actual visit, I will preface my rating with the following: it was a Thursday evening in mid-July on a VERY hot day. Our visit was around 6:30pm... there was a considerable wait for a table, so thankfully the bar had 2 open spots. The bartender, while friendly, clearly was overwhelmed. He definitely needed a bar-back to assist him with washing glasses. He took our order quickly, but we easily waited almost 10 minutes before our beers arrived. While we had his attention, we ordered two apps: wings and cheese fries. The wings were decent, but the fries were very salty: covered with fake, liquid cheese, bacon bits, and scallions. I was tempted to try a salad, and after seeing other salads being delivered with far too much dressing, I opted for the taco salad. There was NO imagination to it: a bed of iceberg lettuce with chili over it, shredded cheddar cheese, tomatoes, and about 12 small, round tortilla chips placed around the plate's edge. It was lackluster at best. I would recommend this place to those just looking for a quick, casual bar visit that includes beers and simple appetizers. Great food! My wife and I had lunch there and I had the Ahi tuna sandwich that came with a wasabi spread on the side. The sandwich was fresh and very good tasting tuna. The wasabi was great too. My wife had the bookmaker salad which she enjoyed. We also shared an order of wings, old bay wings that were perfectly cooked. Ordered online just to sit at the bar and wait for my food that was already sitting right in front of me to go for no less than 15 minutes. Thing was there were 2 jackwagons behind the bar and only 2 people sitting that were already served. Both employees walked past me multiple times and wouldn't even look at me while carrying on to themselves with some bs conversations. Like did you think i was there to just stare at you? Trust me if i wanted to go stare at people those 2 blokes would be last of my list. Haven't even gotten to the food yet. Absolute rubbish. Service: Heard about the customer service thus far from the manager and then supposed "owner"/gm...and not for good reasons. Went in and was pleasantly surprised however bar service was slow during a weekend lunch. For perspective-There were about 6 people at the indoor bar but the bartender had to manage drinks from the staff, carry out orders, and the 6 of us sitting at the bar. Maybe two bartenders or a bar back would help remedy this during summer weekends. Food: gumbo was good- add your own flavor (hot sauce). Create your own salads were good-the veggies were fresh. Menu: pretty conservative probably to rake in the crowd from the Pines. Interior: absolutely beautiful on the inside- whomever designed the bar and chose the paint, light fixtures etc well done! Our family's top 5 go-to restaurant. Great menu with different nightly specials...we've had just about all the menu with no complaints! All very good! Very family-friendly with an outside 'tiki' bar for grown-up time. Very large portions on all menu items, including kids selection. Smart in that if the kids are happy & content, grown-ups will linger, have another beer/cocktail, maybe an appetizers and/or dessert. Good food We recently stopped by after a long day at the beach on a Sunday evening. The place was very busy and has a great vibe. We asked to set outside by the water and we really enjoyed it. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars because of the service. Our server had no time to tell us the specials and it was hard to get his attention when ever we needed a refill or another drink . I love down the street and was weary about coming here however I chose to gave it a chance. The environment is great, the food is wonderful, and the drinks are great and fairly priced unlike in ocean city. There is an outside deck which is great to use during nice weather and nice bar inside too. The two bartenders I encountered were fun, friendly, clean cut, casual, and professional (Chris and Steve). I got my drinks quickly and whenever I have asked for my tab, I received it almost immediately. I also enjoy the live bands that come here and perform on occasion. We went there for lunch recently for the first time and it was a pleasant surprise. The menu gave us an array of choices, the ambiance was nice and our server, Dey... was pleasant and attentive. The prices were wonderful as they are more reasonable than some places in Sussex County where were are from. The overall lunch experience was very good and on the return trip we stopped by for HH. I was pleased to find decent wine choices which sometimes is mediocre at pubs like this. We will be back. read more

What is worse than bad service at a restaurant? NO SERVICE, We went to Southgate Grill tonight to watch some football, have some drinks and have dinner. - or so we thought. The host seated us and after 15 minutes we had no server. I asked the host to get us a server and sat back down. After another five minutes without a server we got up and left. We commented to the server that we still had no server. His comment? "Yeah, I know." We've been here many times before - mostly for lunch, but also for dinner. For the most part service has been OK. This was totally unacceptable. It was not a function of a big crowd. The place was maybe half full at best. The lack of service and the lack of an intelligent response by the host tells me there may be good reason why there was no crowd. Perhaps others have caught on to the lack of caring and the lack of competence we experienced. We observed a server waiting on several others who came in after us. Our server? We'll never know. Get rid of the incompetent staff. Have a manager who is involved and cares. Let me know when that happens and we may come back. Until then, you've lost a good customer. read more

Very disappointed. Called them for carryout at 5:40 for an order of french fries and a bowl of Jambalaya. The girl who took my order told me that it would 15 minutes. Drove up and waited and waited. By 6 :30 they finally told me that they burned 3 orders of French Fries. Really! 45 minutes and they finally told me that? I asked for my money back which they gave me. Went in tonight thinking I could sit down with my girl and enjoy a few drinks. We showed up and I went to the restroom and when I came out we didn't have any drinks served to us yet. Plus on top of that the guy bartender didn't seem pleased we were there and made it known that last call was at 1045. So we decided to leave and go to whisker's instead since they close around 12am. Without a doubt this was the worst meal Ive had on the Eastern Shore. I cant fathom how this place has a 4 star rating; I imagine its because people mainly go to drink and get food as an afterthought. I got the seafood platter and the crab cake was just bad. It was cheap, canned crab meat with tons of filler. Everything else on the plate was fried and tasteless. The chicken topped with crab dip was bone dry. The chicken was frozen for who knows how long and cooked until any decent amount of texture was obliterated. The mashed potatoes 100% came from a box. Do yourself a favor and go anywhere but here. The entrees were sub par - we ordered 3 entrees of the ahi tuna - one rare, and two medium rare - all came out nearly well done and completely dry. We also had the breaded shrimp - tasted and looked like it came out of a frozen box like Gordon's. And the rice and collard greens were void of any flavor. Well....they have a sandwich called The Boss. It's a pile of Flank Steak between two pieces of bread. My friends asked the waitress if it was good, and she said she loved it. It was the most disgusting thing they ever ate and could not eat more than a couple bites. I tried it - disgusting. Lose that item on the menu Southgate Grill. Another friend got the tuna salad sandwich. It was a pile of canned tuna fish with a lot of water. The bread was soaked with the tuna water - disgusting. I got the jambalaya and a turkey Ruben. So we were at outside bar and we were required to social distance at bar! Yet the inside bar had no social distancing whatsoever! Outside we couldn't extend our group from 3 to 4 at bar! But the high top table right next to us was increased from 4 to 5 adults plus a baby. And they were chasing the baby around with no masks the whole time. It was not only a problem for her to have a table of more than 4, but then when we decided to use the "nicer" chairs at the empty table beside us that had not been used in hours we were "scolded" for our behavior. We're visiting the area, and saw this place. Very glad we did. Our server, Julia, was very professional, courteous, and effervescent to the point of making us comfortable, but not over done. We will be going back, and I hope she's our server again. The food was excellent, and abundant. My wife had the Fried Shrimp, and I the Fisherman's Platter. The food arrived promptly, and was properly prepared. We did share the Jambalaya, and it was very good (very close to that which we had in New Orleans), when we go back, we will have it again. I also had the Crab Cake, and it was one of the best I have ever had. With Crab Cakes, a lot of the complaints center on the unusually high quantity of "filler". This Crab Cake was very contrary to that, you'd be hard pressed to find the filler, and it was moist, AND DELICIOUS. Like I said, we will be going back, and I would recommend it to all. read more

This place hasn't even had its grand opening yet and it's PACKED every night! It's amazing. Prices are awesome, food is awesome, drinks are awesome, staff is awesome and happy hour is AWESOME! Only thing to make it any better is when the tiki bar opens! We live walking distance from this new gold mine and plan on making frequent visits. And it's open till 2am! Did I mention happy hour is awesome!? Very excited about this place. Everything before it in this location was less than mediocre and never an option for us...so our anticipation for south gate has been building ever since they started remodeling and we are please that it is a pleasant change.
