Cute and cozy atmosphere with great sandwhiches! We ordered the salmon blt, the gobbler, and a grilled chicken sandwich. The blt had pesto mayo ontop which was the perfect addition for the grilled salmon. My only issue was the tomato was a huge chunk instead of a slice which ended up being tossed to the side- kinda disappointing. The salmon was grilled perfectly I hardly even put it down on the plate. Gobbler was fantasic and you can never go wrong with a classic grilled chicken sandwich. Service wasn't terrible but a little hostile. Our waitor rudely kept stating he has other tables waiting and he has five tables to himself while my mom was ordering with him trying to change the bread on her sandwich. Southgate grill has a pretty large menu. I went previously and had a salad, which was fine. We went this time especially to try the crab cake since another poster said it was the best in the area. As a life long Maryland resident, I would say you should skip the crab cake. The crab meat tasted subpar and not fresh, it also had quite a bit of filler that I didn't even eat half of it. Same goes for the cream of crab soup. It also had the inferior crab meat which probably came from Indonesia. Maybe next time try the burger. read more

Nice venue in Ocean Pines on a pond. Pleasant indoor and outdoor seating. Food is varied and quite good. It's a good value. This is unusual these days. The menu is the same as the Backstreet Grill in Salisbury. The service was fast, actually, really fast. read more

Burgers (& chicken) on Wednesdays are their Special - have been for years. Add their fries and a drink for a complete meal and you won't be disappointed. Wait staff know their menu and make great recommendations. Happy hour and the bar keeps the atmosphere energized. We went to the local casino and wanted a bite to eat and stopped here. They were not busy, but it was around 3pm on Saturday of Labor Day weekend. We were seated indoors and I noticed a few French fries and a napkin on the floor at our table. At least the floor was not carpeted. The waitress was attentive, very pleasant and perky. We ordered beverages and one of us got wine by the glass. I ordered a Cuban, another ordered nachos with tuna, and the other two ordered sandwiches. I left to wash my hands after handling all those casino chips and the menu. The bathroom was clean but was odd that there was a large countertop with only one sink. I was disappointed to learn that there was nothing to dry my hands with, no dryer, not towel dispenser, no towels. I mentioned it to the host on my way to the table. My Cuban lacked substance, meaning everything but the roll should have been doubled. It reminded me of going to Subway. The tortilla chips under the tuna nachos were beyond stale. The waitress tried one in the back and had to spit it out because she could not chew it. The new order had chips from a new bag. Afterwards, my wife quietly told me that her sandwich had a funny aftertaste and she hoped she would not be ill. She did not mention it in the restaurant because she felt bad for the waitress with one returned item already. She did not end up getting sick but was naturally uneasy for a while. OK, we thought we would try something near the casino and not have to risk the lines near the oceanfront. Good thought that did not work out. read more

firstly, I think I'm pretty fair on criticism and compliments. I post both at restaurants. I'm a picky eater and not always easy to please. When it comes to food with a high standard. I will tell you that in the last four days in the Ocean City Maryland area. I've had crabcakes twice a day for four straight days at different restaurants so that's eight different restaurants crabcakes, and the crabcakes at Southgate Grill are far above the best I had I went to some really good restaurants some local bars and pubs and some pretty well-known seafood houses and they knocked it out of the house. Taylor my server was awesome. Good company lots of fun conversation the gazebo I sat and was really cool sitting down on a little man-made lake and a big rain storm came through so it was a lot of fun and the next day I went and had their French dipand the friendship was possibly the best friendship I've ever had. It was incredible. I don't know the server name, but she was nice and I got a chance to meet the owner and give him some compliments. I recommend anybody from the Salisbury Berlin Ocean City area south Delaware to get into Southgate Grill. Hubby and I went there tonight and he got and loved the pot pie Wednesday special. I did the BYOB burger and it was amazing. Taylor was our server and she truly went above and beyond. She was awesome!!! Other staff I need to mention is Maddi the hostess. I witnessed her go above and beyond when she picked up trash on the floor as she passed it. We had a great experience on a September Sunday around 12:30 PM at Southgate. It was not crowded and our server was pleasant and efficient. My grilled Salmon BLT was LOADED with at least 6 strips of bacon and the salmon was so tasty. My friend got a HUGE create your own salad which was chock-full of goodies. I love that you can create-your-own burgers, sandwiches and salads here. Best of all? $4.00 Mimosas and Bloody Marys! Nothing like a little day drinking. Modestly priced and easy to eat food. Southgate Grill is nice and casual. Regular "American" food that's not too fancy and not too expensive. The trick is to get there during a time when it's not too crowded. Even in the off-season, the place is pretty busy. This most recent visit I was seated in a booth in the bar area. The bar was packed and noisy with more than a few folks that were plenty happy toward the end of the restaurant's Happy Hour. The food is decent, though. The service is also good. All in all, a nice restaurant and bar that I'll be back to visit. read more

We were quite pleasantly surprised with our revisit. It's been a couple of years since we had a disappointing lunch there and thought we'd give it another try, not expecting much. And it started off a little concerning: the bartender was the only waiter and although we were the first customers, it got busy quickly. We need not have worried as Robert was a marvel. How he managed (and without even writing orders down) is beyond me but he was super efficient and helpful. The food came out in a nice pace from appetizers on and everything was spot on hot and delicious. The soups were excellent. The Cream of Crab was nicely thick and full of meat. (I would order it next time with a side of sherry but this is a personal preference.) The Fire Roasted Corn and Shrimp Chowder was a revelation. It was so excellent that it ranks in the top 5 of my best soup experiences ever! The Sriracha/Honey Wings were perfectly crisp and the sauce very nice. They were not quite as orgasmic as some others around (Clubhouse Bar and Grill, Shotti's, Pickle's Pub) but I'd give them a B+. Not bad! There is a current trend that I find unappealing which is to put a puff pastry block on top of a chicken stew and call it a Chicken Pot Pie. I'm happy to say that here they use a biscuit type dough. It is not as perfect as a rolled pie dough but I do understand the impracticality of such a labor intensive version. It was yummy. My husband, who worked for a time in Miami, is a Cuban Sandwich connoisseur. He has yet to find anything close to the real thing and he feels deprived about it. The version here is as close as he has come and he announced that it will serve to stave off the craving. He found it "good." The other thing that I found laudable about this place is the menu. It is incredible: one of the most flexible I've ever seen, with make your own combinations and lots of add on specials. And we heard at another table how they can change things up by blackening and substituting things. It's like they've adopted Burger King's motto: "have it your way." Normally, this would compromise quality but we found no example of that at all. In fact, my only gripe was the oleo served with the dinner roll. I'll bet I could have gotten butter if I asked, but I just ran out of room so the roll went home (with lots of other leftovers) Oh, and one more fantastic praise worthy note: unlike a lot of places around, when I asked if the music could be turned down a bit, not only did I not get any "attitude" (yes, you Shotti's) not only did Robert not say "sorry, that's how we like it" (I'm talking to you Mangoe's) but he smiled, graciously said "sure" and put it at a volume that was pleasing to my old ears and conducive to actually having a conversation (imagine-no phone-shocking! haha) I left with a full, happy belly, a great feeling about the restaurant, and no migraine! Pleasantly surprised by our dinner experience. I was expecting bar type food and my whole party was happy with their meals. The Maryland crab soup was particularly pleasing. The shrimp salad wrap could have done with more seasoning and either more shrimp or a smaller wrap (to avoid large bites of just eating the wrap). Sandwiches were well received also. AMAZING! The food is always correct and delicious! We have never had a problem with our food at Southgate. The service is always speedy and fast. I would not go out of my way to dine here but if you are vacationing in the Ocean Pines community nearby this is a fine place for a satisfying meal. You are greeted with a smile as soon as you walked in and the servers went out of their way to play with my baby and address all of our needs. They truly deserve a kudos for providing such a hospitable atmosphere! There is nothing gourmet about the menu (I am guessing a lot of the items are not housemade) but they have plenty of choices and it's guaranteed even the pickiest eaters happy. My daughter loved the grilled mahi mahi and broccoli (even though she is a year old she has sophisticated taste, lol) and I was very happy picking all the fried foods off everyone else's plates. Hush puppies were addicting, fried crab cakes had very little filler, and the fact that you can get beach fries here without having to lug yourself to the boardwalk was the real winner. I was worried that the wings would be a mess after reading reviews but I was very pleased with them. They came out not too greasy, perfectly seasoned and crispy. Yum, yum! The bar manager was a complete jerk. His excuse was this was his first night as bar manage; but all the regulars seemed to know him. We waited for ever for a beer and even longer for him to take our order. He told us to wait while he was teaching the bar back how to make a mixed drink. The bar was not crowded and we never had to wait so long. He called my wife sweetie. Please bring back the old staff from Holiday vacation. The main course came out before our appetizer. I told them to just to bring the main course out after the appetizer, when they did it was cold. Don't get me wrong the food is fantastic and affordable. The current management sucks! read more

We are local and enjoy this place for a quick bite but normally sit at the bar. However, we have sat in the dining room twice now with friends. Both times they would not seat us until our entire party was there. There is a sign- so ok. BUT the dining room was nearly empty on both occasions. And, they clearly made exceptions for other tables that came in after us which is really frustrating to witness when you had to wait. Our family gathered to celebrate the life of our matriarch. Southgate Grill was one of my mother-in-laws go to lunch places. There were 30 adults and very few places to gather because most restaurants are not accepting groups that size. Manager Gray Reeves seems to wear many hats. He made it possible for us to have a buffet style dinner which featured some of her favorite foods, run a slide show from my computer to their screen, and set out a few pictures and items of importance to her. Well aware of staffing shortages everywhere, we expected to wait a bit longer for drinks, but our server (wish I could remember his name) and the bar did a great job. The hot food was hot and the cold food was cold. The drinks kept flowing and so did the sharing of memories. We are very thankful to Gray and The Southgate Grill staff. read more

I live within walking distance of this place, which is always dangerous :-) The food is really pretty good, with daily specials, happy hour, and reasonable prices, which says a lot for the OC area. We've always just sat at the bar, as the bartenders are very personable and they serve you quickly, and if you go there enough, they know what you like, so you don't even have to tell them. They also have a tiki bar outside with bands on the weekends which we've also done if it's not too hot. It's always crowded with many locals like myself from Ocean Pines. However I was served the nastiest water I've ever tasted in my life (tasted like it was from the pond in front) and for dinner had a Cuban sandwich that was meh and a crabby pretzel which was pretty good, but I could tell the pretzels were frozen and reheated.
