Nice old school hardware store right in the middle of the Montrose area. I have been coming here for years when I didnt want to drive all the way to one of the big box stores. They have basically anything you that you may need while working on a project at your home or office. The service isnt as good as it used to be a few years ago...I guess some of the old timers that worked there have retired and were replace with new workers who just dont care as much. The only real complaints that I have are that the prices there are crazy expensive...so expensive lately that I have just driven the distance to the big stores. Also...this is just a quirk but they alway had a really cool sautomation door on the front, I guess that finally broke and they have elected to not repair it at this time. read more

Best hardware store ever. Everyone that works there has their own little expertise and are always willing to help. Even when inquiring about merchandise that isn't as commonly bought or used, ask them to take you to someone that knows and there is always someone to solve the problem or brainstorm with. It's a different experience every time that is much appreciated! read more

This place really does have almost everything. I go here to find what I need, often with help from any of the employees. Some folks complain about the lack of "ambiance" or "feel goody" feelings from the employees but, this is a helpful hardware store not a spa. They are an invaluable asset to the community. Purchased 25 bags of River Rocks today. Living in the neighborhood they loaded the rocks and had them delivered to my home. Southland Hardware has always been a great place to shop with great Customer Service. Keep up the great work guys. read more

I love this hardware store. I don't know how they do it but they have pretty much everything a homeowner may need in a relatively modest storefront. Service is excellent and they are one of the few that offer glass and glass cutting. I don't live in Montrose anymore but it's still convenient and the service is friendly enough for me to drive from EaDo. Thanks for being there Southlands! read more

My dad and I came in last weekend to get a few keys made. As soon as we walked in, I felt immediately uncomfortable, due to the woman at the key counter's demeanor and attitude. She was leaning forward on the counter, and when I walked up she couldn't look more annoyed. I asked her if I could get 3 copies of the two keys I had and she just asked me to put the keys down and told me "Go pay my colleagues at the registers behind you". I get in line behind one other man, and a woman gets in line behind me. As soon as the man was done paying, the woman at the register looked literally over me and asked the woman behind me to come up. Genuinely confused, I awkwardly waved and said "oh, I just wanted to pay for my keys". The cashier replied "We aren't making your keys, she is". I explained and said that I was told to pay here. And the other cashier chimed in "yeah well we aren't the ones making your keys.". As I took the two steps over to the original counter the cashier yelled over my head to the key counter "why can't you do your own orders?!" And the key maker replied "Well it's a big order" and then she called someone to ring up my order, which took all but 10 seconds. I hung around the counter a little bit but made sure not to hover because I didn't want to upset these women anymore than they clearly already were. I looked down and saw the envelope with keys in it and I said "oh are these mine?" And the woman who made my keys, looking down and not at me did an an annoyed nod, didn't even try to tell me. My dad and I couldn't get out fast enough. So incredibly awkward and unprofessional for such a simple purchase. Honestly sad because I thought this little tucked away hardware store would be a nice neighborhood spot. read more

I'm a pushover for small businesses! It's actually weirdly fun just to wonder around the aisles. Not exactly Home Depot. But they manage to have just about everything I need to do the odds and ends fix-up on my condo. While this place seems to have almost anything you need, the staff are miserable. They never smile and seem to loathe to help. They have a terrible attitude and don't seem to care one iota if you buy anything or come back a second time or more. It's this attitude that makes me order online. The staff is simply ridiculous when it comes to customer service! I walked in today to have a couple of new house keys made since my old ones were starting to bend. First of all, trying to find what you are looking for is like trying to find the cheese in a rats maze. Second of all, the staff is so ignorant about what and where things are in their OWN STORE! And lastly, to the old man with the thick glasses who rolled his eyes and cursed at me under his breath when I asked for the 2 keys to be different looking from each other (so I could tell each one apart from the other) I applaud you for showing me exactly how NOT to treat another human being. Especially someone who is giving your company business when it clearly needs it! As much as I would like to keep local businesses alive, I will definitely be choosing a conglomerate over this nasty attitude of a place. read more

I have been to this local hardware store many times and sometimes they have what I am looking for sometimes they don't. Today I was particularly miffed. I am a 30+ hard working black female engineer. I went into the store dressed in dress work clothing. I use my backpack as a purse. Never have I been asked to leave it at the front counter. As I walk in I'm loudly asked to leave it at the front door. Fine I shall. But as I grab my items to purchase, I notice multiple women in the store with larger purses/ bags than mine who haven't been asked to leave theirs at the front door. I rarely use race as an excuse due to the fact that half my family is white but I feel like I was completely singled out. It's unfortunate this hardware store is in my neighbourhood and convenient but I'd rather go somewhere I don't feel like I'm being judged like I'm going to steal something. read more

This is an old-school hardware store in the finest sense--a hold-out from the days when places like this were more common. From the selection, to the layout, to the employees, this place makes me feel like I'm on a trip to the hardware store with my dad as a kid. They have a little of everything (including free popcorn). I always enjoy my trips there. Those who write bad reviews of this place have simply never learned to appreciate the culture of realness and blue-collar grit that such a place imbues, or the function it plays in the neighborhood it serves. If you want to stick with big-box retailers because that's what you're comfortable with, then do so. This is not Home Depot. Keep a couple things in mind though. 1) The average big-box employee will put down their phone, greet you with a [fake] smile, and ask you how you are despite the fact that they couldn't care less. Then, they'll tell you with great accuracy which aisle the item you're looking for is on before abruptly returning their face to its buried position in their phone. This is great for someone who wants empty kindness and nothing more than directions to the item they think they need. The high-schooler in the apron directing shoppers has zero experience with the products they ring up. The average small, locally-owned, neighborhood hardware store employee will smile at you if it comes naturally (you know, like every other interaction with a real human). If they're not busy, they may offer their assistance. You may have to ask for it. Once you get it, they can't help but try to arm you with all the knowledge you'll need in order to see your project through. They aren't working there for weekend party money--they're there because they love to share their knowledge and to help people. These are the kind of people who might just hang out there without even being employed there, just to talk shop. They'll probably ask you more questions than you ask them. If you're planning to go about your project the wrong way, they'll tell you--then they'll tell you the right way to do it. They're able to do this because they have real-world experience with what you're trying to do. 2) When paying those low prices at a big-box retailer, you're contributing to the eradication of locally-owned small businesses like Southland Hardware. Lowes and Home Depot are the reasons that such stores, and such knowledgeable and experienced employees, are such a rare breed today. If you're an experienced contractor, and simply need to quickly purchase building materials at the lowest price around while enjoying a forced smile from a pretty check-out girl, go to one of the big-box stores. For a layman like me, navigating relatively complex projects on my own house, the choice is simple. I'll get real help from real people and keep my money in my neighborhood. read more

Why pay more to shop here, only to be insulted by a nasty store clerk? Southland is a rather small hardware store near my residence. They have quite a bit of inventory, especially considering the size of the store. Their prices are higher than Lowe's and Home Depot, but it's convenient and they usually have what I need. I was there last week to purchase picture hangers, a stud finder, and metal pegs for my daughter's bookcase. I approached the door looking for the hours posted sign, when the an unpleasant, heavy-set woman named Dawn opened the door. She could have said, "we're open, come on in." Instead, she slowly pointed to the word "PUSH" on the door, then read it aloud for me as she carefully ran her thick finger under the word. "See PUSH, that's how you open the door." I suppose I could have presented her with my Mensa card, or explained the difficulties I have with my vision, but I chose to ignore her and began looking for what I needed. As I walked away, I heard Dawn ridiculing me for being *too stupid* to read or open a door. I assumed she wasn't particularly bright, and continued my search. A male employee helped me locate a stud finder and the pegs for my bookcase. He was knowledgable and courteous. I appreciated that! When I approached the front of the store to check out, Dawn was the only open register. After she finished complaining about two fellow employees, she started scanning my items. She abruptly ordered me to, "Go put away the basket." I told her that I would do so after I removed my things from it. I asked if the store accepted American Express. She saw this as another opportunity to show off her nasty attitude - "YES, of course. Everyone accepts American Express now. We accept ANY kind of money or payment." Unnecessary and unacceptable. It's not cute. This isn't Seinfeld, and she isn't the Soup Nazi. She is a large, unpleasant woman at a small hardware store in Houston. I could have loved this place, but I don't. I love small stores with lots of personality, but not this one. I just can't recommend it. Too bad. read more

Don't expect a smile or costumer service from these employees... Everyone was super rude.

For years I have tried to support this "mom & pop" hardware store despite the merchandise being slightly more expensive. In my opinion, I'll happily pay a higher price to keep small businesses afloat. I grew up in a small town and this store has a similar feel. Unfortunately, too many of the employees have horrible customer service skills. Don't get me wrong, there are still a few who are wonderful--the young black woman and Hispanic guy that work the small hardware/paint counter, and the delightful black woman who has worked the checkout as long as I can remember. But the heavier white lady at the checkout and the older man in lumber ALWAYS act like it's an imposition when asked a question. When you call, they don't always want to transfer you to the department to ask a question. Case in point, I called yesterday to ask about MDF. I knew instantly I was talking to the grouchy checkout lady, who dismissively said they only sold 3/4 MDF and it was in full sheets (8'x4'). I asked to be transferred to the lumber warehouse and she reiterated her statement. Drove there today after passing two box stores yesterday and they do not carry 3/4" MDF--only 1/2" and only in 2'x4' sections. In the same way I refuse to keep supporting mom and pop coffee shops where the baristas serve your coffee with a scowl and spoonful of disdain, I'm afraid Southland is joining those ranks in my book. Really a shame. I guess I'll be driving twice as far to support the ace hardware in the heights. They may not always have what I need either, but at least they're friendly. read more

I love this place. It's mom & pop, has a ton of things, really helpful staff, and great prices. I really appreciate my experience anytime I go in, and it is way better than being confused in a huge Lowe's or Home Depot. Not only is it way cheaper than those stores, but they can help you find what you need and give you great advice on how to do it. You feel like you're at your handy grandpa's house, and there is warmth you can feel! read more

Really neat store. Would shop there more often except the most of the people that work there are rude. I can handle paying a little more based on convenience. Friendly neighborhood hardware store! Compare to the meg-style stores, this is the gem in Montrose area. They even offer free popcorn!

Not necessarily a friendly atmosphere but it's location and convenience was undeniable when you needed things around the house. It's a neighborhood jewel but it's not going last much longer. read more

The only reason I'll give Southland 2 stars is because of location. Otherwise, I've rarely met such unfriendly and nasty staff, especially the check-out staff! I was actually barked at because she couldn't find the price of a product. This happens a lot here. Be aware of dates on their labels. I bought several cans of expensive polish that lost pressure and would not spray. I have been a regular and good customer for a number of years. When I went in to see how they would handle it I was verbally abused by the son of the owner. I have since contacted the manufacturer who are aware of the problem and replacing the product. I was told there is a 3 year warranty on the product. I have never experienced such rudeness and will not shop there anymore. I suggest you ask the date of any product you buy from them and keep the receipt until the product is finished. Or you could shop elsewhere and probably pay less. read more

Southland Hardware is nice because it's got that small business feel to it, the floor staff is usually friendly and helpful when it comes to helping you find whatever you came in to buy because this store can somewhat be overwhelming with a million knots and bolts scattered everywhere. The check out staff is often pretty rude, don't expect a "hello how are you?" or a "did you find everything you were looking for" and expect more of a grunt or sigh when they have to check you out! If you can overlook the rudeness this is definitely a great way to support your small local business and finding whatever you need because they really do have everything!!! read more

Love this place! Always find whatever I need - or, more often, they figure out what I need and find it for me. Today I walked in with 8 pricey drawer knobs whose screws were about 3/4 inch too long and walked out with 8 perfectly sized ones, thanks to two gentlemen who took the time to make the appropriate measurements & use the store's wire cutters to solve my dilemma. I really like going to a hardware store around the corner, I always have. The added bonus of not having to hop on the freeway in Houston is an added bonus. This place has been there for me many a time when I needed odd supplies for art projects, power tools, and hammers for professional reasons. The sales people I have asked for help are always friendly and help me find what I'm looking for right away. The only down side is that the store is a little cramped... but on the bright side that's some seriously good resource density. read more

When selecting a hardware store in central Houston, there really isn't anything to it. We don't have a Lowe's, Home Depot, and until recently, not even a Wal-Mart. Southland Hardware is honestly one of the only choices. AND, I love it! I drive by the Montrose shop along Westheimer daily and feel a little tingle in my heart each and every time. I don't even mind that I nearly always have to park in the street. The store is a giant mess of clutter that is somehow still organized just enough. A seasoned shopper can always find what they need, but if you are one that needs assistance, Southland has some of the friendliest employees in town! They'll not only help you find anything your heart desires, but make sure you know what you're doing with it too! read more

I only go here every now and then because it is so close to my apartment. At least twice I have gone to them to have keys made and both times the keys wouldn't work. I had a flea problem last year and went there to buy a heavy duty flea bomb, the third one, ultimate solution. I bought something with a lot of warnings on the label and ended up being too scared to use it. Thankfully my problem went away. This place is of the very old school, flea market-grain store variety, somewhat over stocked with strange supplies. It's worth a look. read more

Southland hardware is a good old fashion hardware store. As soon as you walk through the doors you feel like you have just stepped out of the Tardis into another world. Very cool. While they have the look and feel of old world charm they will more then likely have what it is you are looking for, as well as the knowledge and experience to help answer all of your hardware related questions. I agree with the previous statements, don't judge the place by the outside. They definitely favor the regulars, but overall the staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. I had a good experience and found almost everything I needed. The only thing I couldn't find was a steel cap nut. They had a bronze one and it is fine: no one will see it. read more
