The ambiance is great. Service is even better. Southside is one of my favorite restaurants in Slidell. The kids meals are priced well and my daughter loves the options. The chicken strips are some of the best I've had. They're fresh and made in house. Fantastic flavor, always juicy. Same with their fried chicken. You can't go wrong. Macaroni cheese is soooooo good when you get the right scoop. We order it every time, but it's a real gamble because it is the one item we order that is inconsistent. Some nights it is perfection with the creamiest cheese sauce, others it's noodles with shredded cheese on top and needs doctoring at home (we order take out 1-2 nights a week). We love the cheese sticks. I continue to be shocked by the quality & quantity vs price. Turkey burgers are so flavorful and not at all dry. They're a definite favorite. I love the grilled chicken sandwiches, especially on burger night. I love that they include the chicken as an option. Dressed with bacon and Swiss is my go-to. I've described the flavor of their Hushpuppies as a party in your mouth. They are, imo, the best Hushpuppies around. Their roast beef debris tastes like my mama made it. It's delicious on Mac and cheese. You won't be disappointed. Well, unless it's an off night with the m&c. I love pretty much all the appetizers, especially since they're made in house. Pass on sandwiches that include ham (ie chicken cordon blue), unless you like sweet meat (no thanks). Their remoulade sauce is sooooo good. For dessert I recommend the bread pudding with whiskey sauce. It's a fav. We were not a fan of the cobblers as they are on the bland side, but it might just be what a cobbler is. ‍ I love the Rueben and will vouch for it. I was going to give 4 stars because of our 50/50 luck with macaroni and cheese orders, but I'm going to give 5 and go place an order. I can't wait to try more items off their menu. read more

The food was excellent. I had the Irish Channel gumbo and the big bowl of gumbo was perfect! The only suggestion is adding some french bread on the side. The service was good and knowledgable of the menu. And the food is cheap. Using my Yelp discount helped, but two of ate for only $22.15 including tax. The only reason for not giving a perfect 5 stars is the parking lot flooded while we were in the restaurant. It started raining after we entered the restaurant and by the time we left there were a good 6 inches of water int he parking lot. I had to walk through the water to get to the car and ruined a good pair of tennis shoes. read more

Since it was raining and our last night we had to get some Gumbo and some Po Boy sandwiches. We got the cup gumbo ( chicken and shrimp) and the shrimp po boy and the alligator po boy as well. The sandwiches were good and the gumbo was good as well. Will we go back? Maybe! read more

We also had the fried Chix, that's where it went wrong. Not sure how they are doing it...but how do you get the outside batter crispy and the skin limp and chewy? The meat itself seemed boiled. Only opened one of the four pieces....told our waiter about the experience when he asked. His answer was....Must have gotten a bad piece.....It's a nice atmosphere, very busy, and friendly hostesses. All I can say is "Wow!" There was so much food! Everything was delicious and served exactly as ordered. Since we both love fried mushrooms, we ordered them as an appetizer but soon regretted that decision when we saw the huge portions of our entrees. I'm not at all saying don't get an appetizer; just make sure you come hungry because you're about to have a feast! The atmosphere was alive and exciting. The service was outstanding and the prices were very reasonable - definitely a great value. To top it off, I received a 15% coupon for checking in here on Yelp. I know Five is stating that Southside Cafe is perfect. Well, they are not, but neither was my day and I was feeling pretty beat after a 10-12 hour day on I-10 and 12 traveling east from Texas. A desk clerk recommended Southside Cafe when I asked for the best local restaurant. After reading some previous reviews on Yelp I was not encouraged, but as soon as we arrived things changed. All those people having a good time couldn't be faking it. Long story short, the food was great and the waitress was too. My experience at Southside Cafe was uplifting. Well, well, WELL. I visited and ate in at southside cafe 3/16/2024 at approximately 3:45pm. We were seated at the same table as our last visit (unsure if that's good or bad). I usually order the same entree or some sort of seafood. The fish was undercooked. Steamed veggies were more like sauté veggies. The cheese sticks appeared darker in color than previous visit. The atmosphere was colder than the temperature inside (it felt as if the thermostat was set on 50 degrees...sure the workers inside the kitchen probably was comfortable but temperature set that low was making the at the table cold quickly..it was way colder than previous visit). So, to sum up the experience at southside cafe. I would give it zero stars. The server brought out our entree sides first I do know why that happened. She gave the appetizer to another table. Usually when a server makes a mistake, the server would acknowledge it to the guest in hopes to make amends. Clearly the server was not trained properly; as I could see, she didn't know what she was doing. She passed the table like six or eight times without saying anything to us. Twenty minutes later our appetizer arrives (as I said after our entree sides). All the while the server convinced she is doing a fantastic job (in her mind only). She was in fact horrible. Ten minutes after that, she brings the entree. Then she quickly leaves..but wait you forgot the grilled chicken for the salad. Five minutes after that, she asks "would you like a refill?" I could not eat the entree. I took most of it to go. I'm not sure who the little young kid is that kept going to select people tables is but in his mind, he figured he was doing a fantastic job. He clearly is more delusional than the waitress. To the owners of this restaurant: find someone to give your staff and management and whatever you had going on Saturday that tried to pass as a restaurant; training on making ALL PEOPLE feel welcome. You may not understand because you clearly have been doing the same thing the same way forever. I can say honestly, I will not recommend or return to this place. read more

And, you get to choose from their house made sauces or traditional, plus get house made ranch dressing. If it's only two of you and you order these, split a poboy or dinner. It's a lot! read more

Friend and I were driving from Central Texas to Atlanta and found Southside Cafe on the way. Not exactly right off the main highway, the reviews drew us in to this Slidell restaurant with a cheerful vibe. The amount of the menu items was ridiculous. Thankfully, what we had was quite excellent. Gumbo was a bit lighter on the roux than expected considering the region. Yet, the flavor profile with various seafood mixed in was pleasant and a great start to the meal. Might as well indulge in another appetizer while your on a road trip. I mean who counts calories during a trip! The crabmeat stuffed mushrooms were another winner. Veal parm for $14 needed a bit of work. The breading fell off immediately. Yet, where in the hell can you get that dish for that price? My side of mashed taters was delivered in a cauldron smothered in a delicious brown gravy with ample onions. Hushpuppies (yes, that's a side) were spicy and fit perfectly (sorta) with my meal in Louisiana. Friend even transported her leftover Muffaletta all the way back to Atlanta! Friendly and attentive service also noting that they didn't overwhelm the table with multiple dishes at the same time. Alisa was a great waitress I was unsure of the potato salads because I'm not a big fan of pickles in my potato salad so I had passed on the Irish channel and ordered other items. She brought me out a sample of the potato salad which I enjoyed so I ordered the Irish channel also. The Irish channel has potato salad in the middle with chicken and sausage gumbo on one side and shrimp and okra on the other. The were both great we'll seasoned and full flavored. The calamari was great crispy and well seasoned with a tangy cocktail sauce My Gf loved her patty melt The buffalo shrimp were good but not my favorite the crust became soggy I know better I usually get sauce on the side because I like my shrimp crunchy. The paaned tuna remoulade was delicious the tuna perfectly cooked but crispy not a common thing you say about tuna because it is rarely served fried.
