Roast beef, shrimp , oyster, poboys are all fantastic. The muffuletta is awesome traditional or seafood. The onion soup is the best I have ever had and that's going against Gordon Ramsey onion soup which was probably the worst I have ever tried. We were really excited to try this place after seeing such raving reviews. The outdoor seating waiting area is very comfortable. Since we were met with a wait of almost 45 minutes to be seated, we expected the food to be outstanding. The onion rings were good, but the sauce was not. We enjoyed the cheese fries with debris. The meat was delicious. The chicken and sausage gumbo had a tomato in it... enough said there. The catfish and tartar sauce were good, but the cocktail sauce was very heavy on the horseradish. We ordered a burger, medium. It was prepared well done, but the bacon on it was awesome. The mac and cheese was served hot, but didn't taste fresh. The coleslaw was alright, nothing special. Finally, they advertised on their instagram story that they'd have the Pelicans vs. Heat game on, but we were unable to get it on the tvs. Overall, it was an average experience. Checking in online was phenomenal. The app let us know where we were in line then we received a text when our table was ready. Our server came by twice to apologize for taking so long to get to us. About 15 minutes and she took our drink order and food order. Taylor was slow. We watched two other tables get sat after ordering our drinks. They received their drinks prior to us. She kept saying the bar didn't have our beer, but no other tables were experiencing the slow service. We got some gumbo. It was a depth of flavor expected from a dark roux. The buffalo shrimp were more Chipotle bbq, but they were tasty. I ordered the ribeye pork chop. The char on the outside was a touch too smoky. But the chop was moist and not over cooked. My husband had the soft shell crab. They didn't season the batter, but he said they were good. Ouch! I need a salve for my rear as a large chunk was just bitten out by Southside Cafe! I fully understand that inflation is rampant and that everything costs more. I'm not complaining about the food cost vs. portion size at all. The food itself was good and the portions reasonable. What I'm complaining about though is an unforeseen 4% (approx) charge for using a credit card and a coercive tip system. I saw no prior disclosure as to the credit card use fee, but maybe it's hidden somewhere on the menu in 3-point type, but even if this is disclosed somewhere, this is just annoying and picayune as who pays in cash for dinner anymore. This is just something that is aggravating and leaves the impression of acute cheapskatery. The next source of pain is the table side checkout that has a default 22% tip. The server then will linger and to select anything less is both complex and awkward. This arrangement is actually worse than the "mandatory" 18% tip that some restaurants impose. The service was fine, but I don't like being defaulted into anything. Ultimately, the tip and credit card fee combination takes away from anything positive. If Southside gets rid of these two annoying aspects, I'll consider going back, because I'm certainly not going to go find an ATM to get around these ridiculous obstacles. The juice just isn't worth the squeeze. read more

We were on the hunt for a good lunch after a long day of travel. Yelp led us to Southside cafe. Little did we know this would be the last sit down restaurant meal we would have for a long while. The menu is huge, everything looked great based on the menu and the pictures we saw on Yelp. I was craving veal, a specialty of Southern Louisiana. They had options for a meal plate or a sandwich either parmesan or plain breaded. I opted for the breaded parm. veal sandwich, the pricing, and portions were more in line with what I was seeking at the time. I might have chosen poorly. My sandwich looked really tasty but was not as good as I hoped. The breading was sliding off the meat probably due to the sauce softening the crust. The sauce was lackluster, the meat was a bit chewy and not very flavorful. The service was good, our waitress was very prompt, almost too much so considering the size of the menu, we felt a bit rushed. Pricing was on the high side and based on the food I received the price was definitely too much for what I got. read more

A big bar full of folks, music and laughter, it was fun!! They have a big menu and daily specials. Big portions and our server was working hard. There are a couple of reasons why I was disappointed in Southside Cafe. First, I've been driving all day and I was tired and hungry. Second, with an overnight stop in LA, I was really looking forward to the food. The menu looked good, it had 4 stars with 200+ reviews....seemed like a great place to eat. Before I get into it, let me just say it's possible the food just doesn't travel well (although my car ride back to the hotel was literally 6 minutes; not very long). I love spinach and artichoke dip. This is not spinach and artichoke dip. It's actually not too bad (it had a bit of a bite), but it has no flavor of spinach or artichoke or parmesan--the flavors that make me love this dip so much-- despite being creamy and clearly quite cheesy (it was topped with a huge amount of mozzarella). It's a little odd, actually; it looked good. I could clearly see the ingredients in there, but the flavor just doesn't match what I know spinach and artichoke dip should taste like. If it were called something else, I may have liked it better. But no. It comes with what looks like homemade chips, but my chips were soft and rubbery. They may have been homemade, but they definitely weren't fresh. HUGE bummer. The fries weren't bad. They were hot, though not very salted or cooked as long as I prefer my fries. They got limp really quickly, almost like they were microwaved instead of fried fresh. The biggest disappointment was the po boy. I've had po boys in LA before that were amazing. The filling was fine, but the bread was horribly rubbery. I couldn't even bite into it. I looked like a ravenous wolf trying to tear into raw deer meat. I shouldn't have to shake my head back and forth that hard (or at all!) to bite a po boy. I was so hungry, though, I really tried to have a go at it, but I just couldn't. I wound up just eating the filling and leaving the bread behind. Major disappointment. I'd be more upset if I'd paid more money for it all. The 3 items I ordered came up to about $18 with the help of a 15% off Yelp coupon. Not bad if the food is good, but too much when I can't even eat half of it. read more

We stop in Slidell often on our way home and generally slip into a chain and get back on the road. We have been missing out. It was busy for lunch on the day after Thanksgiving, but we were seated immediately. We ordered the tuna steak sandwich, sirloin burger with cheese, and a small order of onion rings and straws. The tuna sandwich was great. We were surprised that it was not a whole tuna steak but sliced; still the flavor wasn't affected at all. My burger was perfectly cooked and juices ran the whole time I ate it. A generous portion of cheddar cheese was melted on the burger along with a crispy slice on the side... yum! I read some of the reviews here and decided to try it out....WOW....did not disappoint. Bad things first...this place is loud! Ok that's it...I had the fried mushrooms and the black and blue roast beef po-boy. The mushrooms were so good and the po-boy gave me a memory flood back to when I was kid growing up in New Orleans...it was that good. Had a couple cocktails that were also very good. My server was Bobby and he was very attentive without being overbearing or too hovering while we ate. I would most certainly go back here. Huge portions, tasty AF....and good prices. UPDATE: went back. A second time...sat at the bar because Bobby was too busy so we couldn't sit in his section...had the Mama Jamma (I think that's the name)...OSOGOOD!
